In February 2010, I noticed my driver leather seat was torn on its side, I contacted Toyota about this defect, since the vehicle was purchased in January 2006. This is a fully upgrade limited vehicle. All I do is slip in and out of the seat and I take extremely excellent care of my vehicle. I believe the leather material used in the vehicle is of poor quality. On 4/28/10 Toyota eventually responded to my complaint, stating the warranty for the seat is 3-years or 36,000 miles: their file # 1003280070; incident 100426-000166. They suggested I contact a dealer, which I did:on 7/27/10 I had a Toyota dealer look at the seat and they concluded that the warranty had expire. I am obviously not satisfied with Toyota's response; their estimate for me to replace the seat cushion cover is $1123. 36 incl taxes. I believe such an expensive vehicle should be outfitted with a higher grade leather seat cover. I have had cheaper vehicles with leather seats which lasted many more years through the life of the vehicle. Toyota has done an injustice with the installation of this poor quality leather and I feel cheated by such action. There must be other owners who have the same experience that I have with the seat. The seat was not deliberately torn or cut and we are quite petite people. When I view the leather in my other car the corners where the driver slides in seems to be stronger and possibly re-enforced to facilitate the driver's initial weight. Toyota has not done a good job to ensure the lasting wear and tear of the seat. Is this deliberate? how did they come up with a 3year, 36000 warranty? what testing did they perform to decide the seat will only last up to that period, therefore they were sure to make a lot of monies on replacement after the warranty expired? this is unfair. Please let me know if I have any recourse to get Toyota to replace the seat. Thank you.

The drivers seat does not rise up enough to see over the outside rearview mirror. Also, the outside rearview mirror is large and continuous to the doorpost producing a visual block from windshield side of the doorpost to the far end of the outside mirror - about 16 inches. Project this visual block-out across to a side-street intersection and it blocks the view of the entire side-street intersection and then some when traveling on a four lane street with a meridian in the middle. This is gross hazard for me and a vehicle in the intersection and for pedestrians. I had one collision when leaving a church parking lot onto a two lane rural road - traveling about 10 mph and the other vehicle was stopped in his lane. Occurred in spring of 2008, about 5 pm - clear sunny day. I did not see his car - and the collision repair cost for his vehicle was $2,500 and for my repair cost was $4,000 +-. Also, I have hit the low concrete divider with my left front tire - located under the freeway overpass when turning - this turn I have done 5 days a week for 5 years on the way to work with no problem until driving this 2008 Highlander. Also, I have had several near collisions with unseen vehicles and pedestrians. At night with vehicle behind me the light glare in the outside mirror is such that it is impossible to see over or around to see a side-street intersection. Similar problems exist for the right outside mirror. To correct this problem the mirror needs to be lowered. Also, a gap between the edge of the mirror and the doorpost would be a major great help. My height is 5'-5" not too short - by pushing hard with my left foot on the floorboard step I am able to see over the outside mirror and gain a reasonable view of the side-street intersection - but this movement takes away from my concentration and agility to drive on.
The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Highlander. The contact stated that Toyota is placing new brake pads on vehicles which last longer, but get so hot that they warp the vehicle's rotors. She stated that formerly it would cost $60 to replace the brake pads, but now it costs $300, not including the replacement of the warped rotors. The warped rotors cause the steering wheel to shake uncontrollably when applying the brakes at 60 mph or greater. The current and failure mileages were 58,400. On September 14, 2007, during an oil change, the dealer checked the tire tread and brake pads and the brake pads are operating normally. The contact stated that the vehicle is still shaking at 50mph because the rotors are damaged due to the front brake pads. The dealer and mechanic stated that the newly designed brake pads dont wear as fast; however, it causes friction and the rotors to warp. The front brakes were replaced in April. The dealer stated on the invoice that the rear brakes are operating normally. The contact is aware of the safety risk involved. Updated 02-01-08. The consumer also stated there is a sever issue concerning the seats. The consumer stated she has experienced extreme hip and back pain from the seats. The consumer stated she can't adjust the seat anymore, because then she will not be able to reach the steering wheel.
