2 Software problem of the 2019 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 12/31/2020

I bought this car new with about 11 mile on it. The transmission immediately had shifting issues as it could not decide what forward gear to go into and shifted hard and felt as if it was going into two gears at one time and after a short drive the instrument cluster warning display indicated a check engine light and warning that the transmission was overheating and acted as if the engine was starving of fuel as it surged and did not deliver power to go beyond 35 mph. After I bought it the dealer reassured me at least three times that the car was okay and that this is the way that the transmission shifts. I repeatedly had the dealer check it and the dealer reassured me that there was no trouble code and no problems found although the check engine light was on and the instrument cluster showed transmission overheating and they fixed a wiring connector to try and fix the running problem. A class action suit came out for the fuel pump failure recall and the 8 speed transmission. I feel that this is a very common problem that the dealer and manufacture are trying to hide. After 13 months and 2,800 total miles the transmission overheated, burned up the internal clutch set and I now have no forward and reverse gears. I feel that the surging and transmission problems are a software defect as the shifting defect comes and goes and vastly promoted if I drive it very gently from a cold start. Once warmed up it does not act up as often except when two gears seem to be engaged at the same time. The key also intermittently does not allow the car to start and instrument cluster also shows trac light , abs failure light, bsm not available, Smart key failure, and complete black out of the instrument cluster and shown to the dealer mechanic and service writers and photographed and videotaped for documentation and in the repair orders.

4 Software problem of the 2014 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 11/06/2018

Bluetooth stopped working. When my phone would be plugged in, the car will randomly disconnect from itself from the phone. Touchscreen would zap in and out until it would finally shut off. Got suspended from work for two weeks because my car would not start (I had no other transportation to get to work). Took car to dealer and they found nothing wrong with battery. It has to be something with the software.

5 Software problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 11/25/2007

Toyota Highlander 2008 limited can be put in reverse with no visible or audible warning that a door is open. Resulted in backing out of garage and causing property damage. Highlander has lcd screen to display warnings and other messages to the driver. Same screen is used to show rear camera image in reverse. When car is in reverse, rear camera image supersedes warning message giving the driver the impression that all systems are go and it is ok to back-up. Toyota needs to reprogram onboard computer so that if any door is open, or if any other warnings (perhaps seatbelts) are engaged the rear camera view does not show on the lcd screen so that the warnings car be displayed. Given the lcd screen and after having the car for only two months, it is clear that drivers will look to that screen for information and not so much use the instrument panel lights.

6 Software problem of the 2004 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 01/25/2006

: the contact stated while depressing the accelerator pedal, the transmission momentarily hesitates before properly selecting the correct gear to engage. The vehicle was taken to the dealership several times for inspection. The dealership mechanic reset the software three times, but this did not correct the problem. Diagnostic testing were performed on the vehicle. The manufacturer was contacted and sent a representative to inspect the vehicle. The representative drove the vehicle and experienced the hesitation and explained, this is a flaw in the design and the vehicle is free-wheeling. The representative would contact the engineers and try to solve the problem. Updated 03/17/06.
