1 Wiring problem of the 2013 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 12/11/2019

The vehicle was parked in our driveway and has twice had rats chewing on the coolant temperature censor wiring. These are the only wires they've chewed on so far. I feel the soy based wiring that Toyota uses is to blame since my neighbors are not having problems with their vehicles that are parked outdoors. A claim with usaa has been filed.

2 Wiring problem of the 2016 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 08/20/2018

Car's awd started not working, check engine light came on. Took it to the dealer and they stated the main wiring harness was "chewed" up by rodents. They stated they seen it before due to a organic based oil on the harness wires.

3 Wiring problem of the 2007 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 07/01/2016

Hazardous safety issue. Possible manufacturer defect to electrical system on 2001-2007 Toyota Highlanders. While driving at high or low rate of speed, there has been many close calls of being hit from behind due to the manufacturer defect to their electrical components or wiring in specific to rear braking lights. When depressing the brake pedal the rear passenger brake lights do not come on. Light bulbs changed, fuse was checked and connectors checked. There has been multiple identical related issues reported by consumers on many blogs and forums online. Only remedy mentioned was to have the Toyota dealer to replace the electrical braking component or circuitry. This should be a recall for the Toyota Highlander 2001-2007 on the critical braking systems on these vehicles. Why do consumers have to pay upwards of $400 to replace what appears to be a manufacturer issue. This is a accident made to happen. Also due to their poor design, the vehicle can't pass the state's vehicle safety inspection.

4 Wiring problem of the 2009 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 09/02/2015

$7155 quote to replace 2 electrical harnesses. Reason: "warning: srs airbag check. Take vehicle to dealer". The junction box is hidden behind the driver side front panel. The pins in the junction box belonging to the airbag wiring harness (part # 82141-48r51) that runs underneath the dashboard were fried due to electrical short (unexplained). Because the junction box also brings the rear wiring harness (part # 82162-48d40 ) to tail, headliner, and back of the vehicle, this must be replaced as well. I fear that there is a major flaw in the electrical system / srs airbags of this vehicle and the vehicle electrical system has experienced premature failure.

5 Wiring problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 11/11/2012

I was driving my 2008 Highlander on November 11, 2012 and the airbag light came on. The following day I went online to see if there was a recall on the Toyota website. There was a recall for the airbag light for the side curtain air bag system. I took my vehicle to my Toyota dealer to have the recall work done on November 14. The airbag light was still on after the recall work. I left them the vehicle so they could do further diagnostics. They said the squib circuit on the spiral cable for the airbag system on the steering column had a short in it. Toyota part number 84306-22010. It was not part of the recall. The dealership told me that if a repair was not done there was a good chance that the airbag system would not work in an accident. The dealership said the airbag light would light up intermittently if I didn't repair it and that they were pretty sure the airbag wouldn't go off on its own. My choice was fix it or park it. I had them do the repair, $276. 63 for the spiral cable and $150. 00 for the labor, $443. 22 total with sales tax. I have over 122,000 miles on my vehicle and the dealership has been performing the maintenance on the vehicle. I have two other vehicles (not Toyota) and neither has ever had an airbag system problem and each one has over 100,000 miles. The wiring for the airbag system should never go bad. Please have someone look into this problem.

7 Wiring problem of the 2001 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 11/01/2010

Wiring problem with passenger side brake light. Kept replacing bulb, then replacing socket, now going to put a whole kit. Toyota neglected to tell me this in the first place, even after several tickets and wasted money on different things telling me it would fix the problem.

8 Wiring problem of the 2005 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 05/01/2010

2005 Toyota Highlander. Erratic temperature control from heater. When set on cool will suddenly blow hot air and vice versa. On-line complaints indicate this is a common problem resulting from defective control unit in this and other Toyota vehicles over several years. The control know comes loose and then the wiring behind it breaks from the circuit board resulting in erratic air temperatures. I also have concern that this electrical failure could cause other electrical shorts or problems. Dealer recommends replacement of entire control unit at prices ranging from $500 to $1500. On-line consumers report fix only requires resoldering the 3-wire contacts at a cost of a few dollars. It is obvious Toyota knows about this issue and the relatively easy fix documented with pictures on-line but continues to deny that it is their problem. It is a manufacturing defect that should have been dealt with several years ago, but charging owners huge fees for replacing a simple component seems to be what Toyota feels is the appropriate solution.

9 Wiring problem of the 2002 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 03/15/2004

The heating system stopped working. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer and the dealer replaced some wires. Upon leaving the dealer, the driver turned on the rear defroster and the wiring harness burned up. Please provide any further information.

10 Wiring problem of the 2001 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 12/09/2003

Door locks keep popping open or shut many times per day. Sometimes when parked, other times when driving. This has been going on for over a year. Each time I take to the dealer, he says he can't find the reason. Toyota has no clue on why this electrical problem exists. I can't leave anything in the car, because when I return the locks are up.

11 Wiring problem of the 2003 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 05/04/2003

Electrical short in headliner between sun roof and sun visor. Burn mark 5-6 inches long through headliner. No fire or flames but could smell strong odor of smoke.
