37 Steering problem of the 2021 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 05/27/2021

I purchased this 2021 Highlander on April 3rd 2021. Power steering malfunction, srs airbag system malfuction first happened on April 21th 2021 when I started the vehicle. The car was towed to the dealer ship. The dealer simply re-set the system and asked me to unplug the tracker device which was installed by insurance company. Because they suspected the problem was caused by the interference from the device. I unpluged it. However, power steering malfunction, srs airbag system malfuction happened again on may 21th 2021 when I started the car. I went to the dealer who then let Toyota involved this time and changed the battery. However, power steering malfunction, srs airbag system malfuction happened for the third time on may 28th 2021.

38 Steering problem of the 2020 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 04/17/2021

I was at a stop sign in my 2020 Highlander waiting to turn left onto a busy road. Upon turning left onto PA state highway 999, the Highlander engine turned off and the steering wheel was "locked" into a left position. This caused the car to continue turning into the opposing left lane resulting in a head-on collision with an on-coming car. With the engine turned off there was no power steering, no brakes, and no way to unlock the steering wheel. The collision caused my car to bounce back and slowly free roll back to the stop sign as though I never entered the roadway.

39 Steering problem of the 2020 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 04/16/2021

In my 2020 Highlander I approached a stop sign at a "t" intersection behind 4 other cars. After stopping and looking to see road was clear of oncoming traffic, I pulled out and started my left turn. As I was turning into my lane the car engine turned off and the steering wheel was locked in the left position. There was no power for the brakes, which left me jamming on the brake pedal as hard as I could only slowing the car slightly. The steering wheel was locked left and I thought I was going to break it trying to force it back. With no ability to move the steering wheel or brake, I braced myself as the Highlander continued turning in the left direction into the other lane. The result was a head on collision with a Mini cooper, both cars totaled, and injuring both myself and the other driver. Highlander was investigated by forensic company in the employ of the insurance company, but they could not find any error in the cars cdr (crash data retrieval) system.

This vehicle has a really bad electrical issue with the steering wheel,it feels like it wonders from time to time. Then the motor will stall out almost completely while driving down the road. Taken to dealer to only have them not replicate the same problems as when we have it. I know it's not me because my spouse has discussed it with me too. I see there's recalls for similar problems within the same production on this vehicle but somehow it didn't get any notifications but clearly it describes the same problems.

48 Steering problem of the 2004 Toyota Highlander

While traveling through a highway construction zone my car suddenly became hard to steer, and my speed became greater, tried to (break) decelerate the car began sliding out of control-plowing into the road construction barriers part lodged in front passenger windshield. The car went through the ditch became airborne through a rod iron fence shattered the rear second-row right side window spun out , and came to rest just feet from the some pileings. This is the information of my daughter whom is an out of state college senior and very shaken up from this ordeal, this her statement to the best of my knowledge. Possibly the placement of the 🚧 could have been a contributor, and the uncontrollable acceleration. Vehicle was bought used a year ago. Can you help up learn why?.

52 Steering problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 05/21/2020

Once after parking and then twice while driving on a highway, the check hybrid system light, the vsc light, the check engine light, and the caution light all illuminated and the vehicle lost all power including steering assistance . Each time requiring multiple key turns to restart the vehicle into limp home mode. This vehicle has been repaired once before for a similar issue which occurred while driving up a hill in moderate traffic. The tank is full of fuel, the tires are less than a year old, and the vehicle undergoes regular maintenance(which includes a new battery as the one bought from Toyota had a few dead cells after only a year or two). I've read multiple complaints about this online while searching for the underlying issue and there seems to be a related recall that doesn't include my VIN.

For several months, there's a thump when turning the steering wheel in either direction, no matter what road/street. We have less than 43,000 miles on it & do not drive on ruff terrain. We purchased the 2011 Toyota Highlander new, take it to the dealer every 6 mos for maint. & now told it needs a steering shaft replacement & 4 wheel alignment. ($657. 33 total!) this is inconceivable to pass on to customers. And a road hazard to all on the roads.

58 Steering problem of the 2015 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 01/12/2020

Our 2015 Highlander steering intermittently locks up and has a complete loss of power. First happened when starting the vehicle and had to sit and start and stop over 15 times and the steering finally came back. We immediately contacted Toyota and they said this vehicle had no recalled parts and there is no problem. When it happened the second time we took it in and they said it had a bad battery and the problem was fixed. We paid a hefty service fee and paid for a really expensive battery. Two days later it happened again and while moving on a city street about 35/40 mph. We got over safely but was so dangerous. Took it back to Toyota and they are telling us the vehicle has no problem and we just need to use it till it happens again and bring it back! if we don't kill ourselves or another motorist! after doing our own research we find our car is doing exactly what the vehicles with the recall are doing but they will not replace the eps system and Toyota is putting us back on the road in a dangerous vehicle. So now we only have one vehicle and struggling to get by. I find it completely unacceptable that Toyota customer relations was of no help and rude on the phone. Now we have bought a $40,000. 00 car we can not drive and be safe on the road with. How can they not help us and fix the problem? we will have to get a second opinion and end up paying more money to fix the problem. Thanks Toyota we will not buy another.

The mechanic cannot pinpoint the issue and I've noted that multiple people on the internet have experienced the same issue. The issue occurs very sporadically and may go days without recurrence. It has occurred during turns around the corner as well as during lane changes.

66 Steering problem of the 2019 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 08/14/2019

While driving, the vehicle had a slight lag when I applied gas then started beeping and provided the warnings: check engine, hybrid system malfunction, pre-collision system malfunction, check awd system. I turned the car off multiple times, the errors were still on the car the next morning when I started the car to take it to the service appt. When I got to the dealership I turned the car off to check it in, when I came back the error was gone. They checked out the car they said there was nothing wrong with it and thought it was just ambient conditions. Two weeks later, I was driving and I had the same lag in power then the same alarms and started driving toward the dealership (about 3 miles away) and the hybrid system and power steering shut down in the middle of the road leaving me with no power. I turned the vehicle off and back on and the errors were still there and it shut down again another half mile down the road. It is at the dealership again. The vehicle has 10,800 miles and should not be having these significant issues. I was driving in the city during all these events.

68 Steering problem of the 2013 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 08/03/2019

My steering makes a clunking sound, which you can actually feel in the steering wheel when it occurs, when turning either left or right. It is increasing in occurrence and intensity. It occurs at any speed. This has been going on for several months. I took it to the dealership and they lubricated something, saying there was no danger. Should it become worse bring it back. It's going back!.

69 Steering problem of the 2011 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 08/01/2019

There is a problem with my power steering wheel, it's stiff and I unable to control it when on the road. When driving on the freeway with high speed, the steering wheel sway left or right and I unable to control it back to straight. Also, when making a turn the steering wheel not reflexes, fast enough for me to make a turn. For instance, whenever I make a right turn and then try to straighten the vehicle back to straight, the steering wheel does not reflex back enough that it leads me to hit the curb damaging front wheel rim. Since, the problem keeps on occurring, as I get worried I took it to the dealership repair shop twice within the period of 2 months. The first time, I took it in the mechanic states that probably has a problem with the alignment, so I paid the for the performance. And it didn't help at all. Then the second time, I took it back to the dealership repair shop again, I told them that the alignment didn't help at all and also I specify that the problem is the steering wheel then I left the vehicle the whole day for the repair shop to fix it. Later, when I went to pick it up, they stated that they corrected the cradle and do the alignment 4 times and I took the car out home. The vehicle still had the problem that I had when I took the car in to repair, then I drove back to the dealership and told the mechanic. Then the mechanic drove the car with me in the car, and he told me the problem is the electric steering wheel and there no way he could do anything about it. Then I asked him if I took it to any other shop will that help. He said no, there no shops that could fix it. He also said that I just have to put up with it. But, it is my life or ever my family members life on the road. So, I'm really worried and I don't have money to replace with a new car right now. The car has never been in an accident before, I bought it new from the dealership.
