36 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 02/23/2014

The bulbs turn off intermittently for no reason. I already replaced the bulbs but the problem did not go away. This is very unsafe. I made my research and there are many complaints of this kind of problem with the 2007 Prius. Toyota should recall and fix this problem. This is very unsafe.

37 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2013

12/18/13 is the first of many incidents when the headlamps suddenly go dark. The problem is random and intermittent, sometimes the left, sometimes the right, sometimes both go dark at once. This is a serious safety issue. Replacing the headlamp does not correct the defect.

38 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 09/26/2013

I bought this car new. In 6 years, 88k miles with regular routine maintenance, I am on right headlamp number three. It turns off of it's own accord, with no warning light or dimming. It just goes completely dark. At first, you could turn the lights off and back on and it would work again for a little while, but that ultimately failed. Because these are monodirectional hdl lamps, they retail around $125 --- to replace one at the dealer has been estimated at around $550. I replaced the first one myself, and had the second one replaced at a local garage. Now on the third bulb which is failing. It is a safety hazard, not to mention it makes my vehicle illegal and unsafe to drive at night. I never know when it's going to go out; I have been pulled over but not cited by local police for having the light out. I know that this is a common issue for Prius vehicles in '05 through '07 - the dealer acknowledged as much. However, because I am out of the warranty period, the onus to pay for this defect falls to me. Ironically I purchased the car to save money and gas and now am having to shell out $500 every 18 months or so because of this continually failing right head lamp. I have read it may be a housing in the lamp assembly; that was estimated to cost around $2000 to replace. Seriously. Toyota does nothing - no recall, no warning, nothing. It's wrong and it's negligent not to address this.

39 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 05/21/2013

Both front head lamps shutoff at the same time while moving at about 25 mph. Turning off the head lamp switch and turning the switch back on restored the lights.

40 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

The right front head lamp goes off out after 10-15 minutes of being on. Once I turn the car off and allow it to rest it will begin to work again.

41 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2012

Lights go out randomly while driving. Dangerous, inconvenient, and illegal.

42 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2012

When I turned my car on to go home my dash lights did not work or backup cam or seat belt alarm nothing was showing I could not tell if I was going forward or backwards etc I parked it turned off 2 times then 5 mins later it can back on automatically fixxx this.

43 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2012

While driving our car, the driver side light has been shutting off. If you turn the light off and on it usual comes back on. Recently we have had both lights shut off on their own while driving. This is extremely dangerous, but fortunately we were able to turn them back on by turning the lights off and on. I contacted Toyota and they said they extended the warranty for this problem to 50,000 miles, but our car is 4,000 miles past. They admitted this was a problem but offered no remedy other than taking it to the dealer. Not only is this a very expensive problem, it is a very dangerous situation. I was driving on a dark country road when the lights turned off, and I was essentially driving blind for a short time. At the very least I feel that Toyota should tell all of it's Prius owners that the potential for this problem is out there. Some quick investigating on the internet shows that this is not an isolated problem. It appears to be a rather common problem. I am writing in hopes that Toyota can be persuaded into doing the right thing to protect the safety of their customers, because they made it clear that they are not willing to do so on their own imitative. Thank you!.

44 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2012

The following described incidents have taken place at least three times with no warning. Upon starting the vehicle there is no instrument panel display which is digital. The vehicle could still be driven. The vehicle's engine would not turn off without making numerous attempts. This has sometimes taken up to 10 min. . Then for whatever reasons after several hours the mentioned malfunctions stop and everything works correctly. I am very concerned the dash display showing speed and other necessary information will malfunction while the vehicle is being driven. Especially at night. Being able to turn the vehicle off immediately is also important. This vehicle is regularly serviced by Toyota who have been unable to locate or correct the problem. I have researched this issue online and have found that there is a large number of Toyota Prius owners having the same type of safety issues with their vehicles. I have read but not confirmed that Toyota is aware of the mentioned problems with the Prius. There are some serious safety issues with this make and model of vehicle that need to be addressed as soon as possible. I hope NHTSA will be able to assist in this matter. Thank you.

45 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2012

Head keeps going out - we've replaced it and now were having the same problem again.

46 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 05/23/2012

The head lights just go off while you are driving and you must turn them off and back on again to get them to work . I already had this repaired and it is happening again and to my knowledge there has not been a recall and obviously its a safety hazard.

47 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 12/29/2011

Head lights went out at night. Had them replaced at aaa repair shop in san jose,CA. Cost $300. Toyato wwanted $600. 00. Then they wnet out at night again on Dec 2010 replace agasin in susanville,CA. Cost$300. 00. Then Toyota came out with recall notice with a written report to replace lights and power unit all at once. Then they just went out again Dec 2011. Do not know cost yet. No acidents from these outages but there could have been. They went out at night not at the same time but could have. This time only the driver side went out. It comes on then goes out then comes on again only for about 30 seconds. I thimk there is trouble with the power unit or bad design.

48 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2011

No one injured. Minor problem, but Toyota refuses suggestions "for legal reasons", so I have to report it to you, and hope that you will relay to Toyota. Good car, good dash lighting system, nice rheostat to dim the instrument panel lights at night, to assist in night road visibility. The problem is that as you dim the instrument panel lights, the lighted symbol for the emergency flasher light switch goes completely dark before the instrument panel lights do. So, on a dark night, you dim the lights to make the instrument panel lights just bright enough to read, without excess reflection or distraction, and the emergency flasher switch becomes invisible because its light went completely out before the other instrument panel lights did. This increases distraction and reduces reaction time when you need to find and turn on the emergency flasher light switch. I doubt this problem is limited to just my car. The simple solution (everything seems simple to the guy not doing the work) would be to design and wire the dash panel lights so that the emergency flasher switch light stays a little brighter than all the other lights, as they all dim. That way, the switch you might most need in a hurry will be visible, even if you have dimmed your instrument panel lights. Quicker turn-on of the emergency flasher alerts following drivers sooner, increasing their safety, and mine. Thanks for working to keep us all safer on the road, and to improve the vehicles we drive.

49 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 10/29/2011

One head light would go out when driving. Turing the lights on and off brings both lights back on. Sometimes the left goes out and sometimes the right.

50 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2011

My 2007 Toyota Prius hid left/right lights goes off intermittently when driving!! sometimes both of them go out at the same time, it is so dangerous. I contacted the Toyota dealer and they want $300 to replace head lamps, but do not guarantee that it will fix the issue. Last night I was stopped by police because my driver side head lamps was out, but I had turn off, then on the lights, and it was back on. I believed this is a well known issue with the Toyota Prius and Toyota should do the right thing and fixed it. I hope that Toyota does not wait for a major accident to do the right thing.

51 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

Failure of Toyota Prius hid headlamps, left me "driving in the dark. ".

52 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

Passenger headlamp went out after approximately 30,000 miles. Replaced it along with driver side bulb. Now both sides are out (low beams only) as well as passenger side taillight. All other lights are working fine. The fuses are intact. Turning off and on hasn't helped. Car still has just over 45,000 miles.

53 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2011

Approximately one week after having my battery replaced by a Toyota dealership in temecula, CA the digital display on my dashboard stopped working and no longer displayed my speed, gas tank gauge, trip mileage or total mileage. After another week or so passed, the display, or cluster display, as it is listed on a Toyota repair estimate from November 3, 2011, would work intermittently by again displaying my speed, gas tank gauge, etc. The display would sometimes work for a few hours and then stop working, and not work again for several days or a week or more. Currently, it the display continues to work intermittently only, causing me to drive for days or a week or more with no visual display of how fast I am driving or how much gas I have remaining in my tank. This failure of the cluster display is a hazard to me and especially to my young teenage daughter because we do not know for sure how fast we are driving or how much gas we have remaining at any given time when the display stops working. I had my vehicle inspected by the Toyota dealership in temecula, CA and they recommended replacing the combo meter since they believe there is an open circuit in the combo meter, but they could not guarantee that their recommendation would resolve the problem. They then advised me that a service bulletin was issued for problems with the cluster display, but no recall has been ordered and they could not cover the cost of fixing the problem under warranty. I then called Toyota corporate offices at 800-331-4331and spoke to the service director, who offered me a 40% discount on the cost of replacing the combo meter on a reimbursement basis and said if a recall was ordered I would get a full refund. I believe the problem on my Toyota Prius of an intermittently functioning cluster display presents a significant hazard for the reasons stated above and warrants a recall.

54 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2011

Headlamps turn off on their own intermittently. The left light will go off more than the right. I usually correct the situation by turning off the lights then back on. This problem has increased in frequency. I read in an online forum (priuschat) that this is a common problem.

55 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2011

Headlamps for my 2007 Toyota Prius fail at night. Bulbs are not burnt out, but the power to them will just shut off. They will work again for a short time if you shut them off and back on again. Happens on both driver and passenger side. Very dangerous, both lights have gone out at teh same time. Manufacturer says cost of repair is $300.

56 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 02/22/2011

I own a 2007 Toyota Prius. Last fall, the hid lamp on the driver's side went on and off and on and off then burned out. It was covered by warranty and replaced. My current mileage: 32, 122. The hid lamp on the passenger side went on and off, on and off and was replaced 2/23/11 at considerable cost to me. I was told by the dealer that this is a common problem with this vehicle. Consumeraffair. Com reports the several complaints, as does the Prius chat line. I contacted Toyota's main office, filed a complaint and was told by the csr that he's had several complaints filed. There is a major safety issue for night driving with these hid lamps. So many folks are aware of the problem but Toyota doesn't seem to be claiming any responsibility for these - what seem to be - defective hid lamps. Part of the safety issue is that they go off and on so the driver may have no idea that one or both lamps are dark unless reflected in the rear of a car in front of the driver. At what point will Toyota commence a recall for these hid lamps -.

57 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2011

Hid bulb failure. Bulb on passenger side was sometimes on and sometimes off. Bulb is v. Expensive (~$200) and replacement by dealer costs another $100.

58 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2011

Headlamps will go out while driving. They will work and then suddenly they are off. You can usually turn the lights off and back on and they will work again. Has done this over the time we have owned the car.

59 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2010

The hid head lamps on my vehicle flicker and go out. If I switch the lights off and on again they light back up. This happens intermittently and randomly. It has happened several times while driving on the highway at speeds in excess of 70mph at night and I feel unsafe. Toyota has refused to accept this is a safety problem, but it is a very common issue with this generation Prius.

60 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2010

Hid headlamps on 2007 Toyota Prius dim and then go out. This happens everytime the lights are used. One headlamp has been replaced at the cost of over $200 and now the other headlamp exhibits the same behavior.

61 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2010

Hid head lamp light bulb failed, both right and left bulbs at same time ,while driving at night with lights on high beam. Turning lights off and back on to low beams returned light, but left me with a fanatic second or two while braking, steering and changing light control. This occurred three times on this night, until I noted the connection between light failure with lights on high beam but not low beam. I don't drive the car at night or in rain and have taken it in to Toyota dealer, whose price for parts and labor was over $400. Currently, I have ordered the bulbs from secondary market and will have them installed by a non-dealer mechanic.

62 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2010

I have a 2007 Prius with 51,000 miles. For at least the past month, the passenger side hid headlamp has been going on and off periodically. Sometimes it has stopped working while driving and then will turn on again when I turn the headlamps off and on. Recently both headlamps had been going off and on at random. This was a safety hazard. On 12/2, I took the car in to a Toyota dealer and was told both headlamps were burned out. At first they charged me over $500 and after I complained about this high charge, they reduced the bill to $289, noting I would only be charged for labor. In my opinion, the hid headlamps were defective, burned out prematurely, and the fact that the lights would go on and off at random posed a safety hazard.

63 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 10/16/2010

Hid headlamps on 2007 Toyota Prius go out all the time. Turning lights off and back on usually corrects the problem. It happens to both sides independently. Bulbs still work fine, but.

64 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2010

Failure of Toyota Prius hid headlamps, problem is intermittent and leaves me "driving in the dark. " failed at 35,321 miles leaving my family in danger of crash. Cycling head lights return lights, but only for a few minutes.

65 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2010

Hid head lamps go out at random times on my 2007 Toyota Prius. Car has 67000 miles on it. Dealer says bulbs are about to fail and need replaced. Cost is over $500. The lights will work fine for several days or weeks then will just stop working. I have been on a dark road and both lights went out. You have to turn the lights on and off to get them to work again. This seems odd that the bulbs will work for a period of time then stop working. One or both will stop working - no consistency.

66 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2010

I have a 2007 Prius and the left light keep going out. It will start flickering and get dim. . . . . Then go out. When you turn it off and back on it will be fine again. 15-20 min later same thing will happen, flicker then dim and off. Its a real safety issue, imagine you drive a long trip at night and you have to keep doing this process?? I am not the only that has the same problem, thousands of owner online has the same problem. Please spend some time and investigate. Toyota says they are old bulbs but definitely not.

67 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2010

2007 Prius with 62k. The driver's side hid light goes out after about 3-5 minutes. Turn lights off and on, it reappears for a few minutes, then goes out again. But it is yellower than the passenger side. Some times both hid lights goes out. Very scary!!!.

68 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2010

I own a 2007 Toyota Prius ; for the past 6 months my hid headlamps spontaneously turn off, and I need to turn the light switch to off then back on again, for them to re-light. This week it happened on a dark country road and I suddenly had no lights at all. Thank goodness there were no cars or pedestrians on the road at that time and there was no damage. I brought it to my local Toyota dealer today and they say my lamps have burned out and need replacement, to the tune of $550.

69 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

Intermittent right hid headlamp. Problem started about 40k miles. The light dims, flickers and goes out. Turning lights off to on will fix issue temporarily. Same problem reported by thousands. Repair costs vary from $300 to $2000. The problem occurs daily. Each time there is a risk of being in accident. Toyota and NHTSA are aware of the problem but nothing being done about it.

70 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

1. Only noticeable during nighttime driving. 2. The passenger side hid headlamp shuts off while driving. Loss of lighting for pedestrians and road signs on right side of road and headlamp out while driving is illegal. 3. Replaced headlamp but problem is still there. Swapped bulbs with the drivers side problem remained on passenger side. Turning the lights off and back on temporally fixes the problem but is very unsafe at night.
