174 problems related to headlight switch have been reported for the 2007 Toyota Prius. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The headlights turn off while driving. Sometimes one , other times both. If I switch them off-on fast they come back on. So it's not a bulb. Toyota speculates that it could be a computer issue for each bulb and could cost over $700 each to fix. This is a very dangerous situation , we have a lot of joggers & kids on bikes in our area. If one light is out I don't always know & then I am now able to see their reflective material. Please issue the recall before someone get killed. Thank you.
Left front headlight went out then 4 months later the right front headlight went out. I can make them work again by toggling the on/off switch. There has been many times that both lights went out at the same time. I looked at the bulbs and they are fine its the light module that is defective and needs to be replaced which is about 600 plus for both. Kind of find this hard to get fixed so I have been dealing with this light issue for some time now. They should just take responsibility for a poorly designed module and replace them! since they did not stand by there product I went out and bought a Ford edge instead of a Toyota highlander.
I have a 2007 Toyota Prius that I am having hid headlight issues. The passenger headlamp will go off at anytime and only come back on if you turn the light switch off then back on. I need help on this problem seeing as slot of Prius owners are having the same problem.
Hid headlights go off at random times. The passengers side was first to start ,now the driver side as well as both go off. The problem is occurring more frequently. When you switch the headlights from off to on they turn on. The vehicle has 100k miles. No warranty, dealers repair cost is approximately $550. 00. I am shocked when I google my problem to see how many people are affected and more so the class action law suits that are there. This is far more than a burnt light bulb,it has to be looked into. I am a loyal Toyota customer of 31 years. Please help! I'm worried about the safety for my wife driving at night.
Both 2007 Prius headlights fail at once leaving me in dark while driving. Many other complaints from Prius owners. Go back on when switched off then on. Intermittent electrical defect. Not qualify for class action. 60,000 mi. Requesting reopen investigation. For recall. Urgent safety matter.
One or the other headlight will go out randomly while driving down the road at night. Ithe only way to get the headlight to go back on is to turn the headlights off using the head lamp switch on the drivers steering column by turning it off and on quickly while driving. This head light going out safety issue will occur to either headlight at any moment, but seems to alternate between them. Have not lost both head lights at the same time yet. This loss of head lights will continue to ocurr every 2 -3 minutes. This is a safey issue and the distraction makes it hard to watch ahead on the road for any obsticles or to watch for wildlife ahead and makes it hard to see anything at a safe distance.
This is a known problem. My headlights fail randomly left, right, or both. If I turn off the light switch then turn it back on the lights will come back. I believe Toyota should acknowledge this as a design problem and fix it. This can cause a dangerous situation at night.
Driving late at night on the interstate and both headlights failed. Couldn't see anything. Quickly turned headlight switch off and then back on and the lights came back on. Failed again every few minutes. If flipping the switch on/off didn't work we most likely would have all been dead as it was so dark out you couldn't see the road or anything else to stop safely. Had to pull over for the night and stayed at a hotel. Replaced the lights at the dealership. To afraid to drive at night so don't know if the problem still persists. So don't know for sure if it was the headlights or an electrical switch malfunction.
The hid headlights going off while driving with no warning, but if the switch is truned from on to off the light work again momentarilary until they go out again. Very unsafe driving conditions, could lead to injuries.
The right headlight goes out intermittently. You then have to switch the light switch off and then on again and it comes back on. A particular problem because our left light went out and then we had to depend on the right headlight only until the left one could be fixed. We had no headlights several times during this time. The right headlight just goes off whenever and you have to click it back on. Very scary and dangerous at night. I've talked to dozens of other Prius owners and they have had the same problem. It seems to be a manufacturing defect and should be recalled for the fix.
Hid headlights suddenly go off while driving resulting in no illumination. If light switch is turned off then on lights will come back on for a little while and then shut off again. This is a very serious safety issue and these bulb failures are extremely common with these vehicles even with vehicles that are fairly new and with very low miles. Toyota claims these lights should last much longer than normal bulbs, but this has not been the case. Additionally these bulbs are extremely expensive to replace. Another example of the poor quality in recent Toyota vehicles which have been well documented.
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Prius. The contact was driving 50 mph when both headlights failed. The contact engaged the head light on/off switch several times before the headlights would re-illuminate. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was advised that the headlights were performing as designed. The contact disagreed and stated that the headlights should not shut off independently without warning. Both headlights were replaced by the dealer. The failure mileage was 36,500.
My 2007 Prius headlights keep going off for no reason. When they go off you can turn the lights switch off then back on and they both come back on. The drivers side has done it three times and they both have gone off once while driving at night.
Headlights turn off while driving. I can turn off the headlight switch and turn it back on and the lights will work for a period of time and than the episode is repeated.
2007 Toyota Prius with hid headlights. Headlights will continuously go completely off while driving and require that the headlights to be switched off and on to turn them back on. This will occur intermittently anywhere from every few minutes to perhaps a half an hour or more. The bulbs appear to be in good working condition once they are on but then will go completely dark until you cycle the switch on/off. Literally thousands of owners of these vehicles have reported this same problem. These lamps are very expensive and are supposed to last much longer that regular headlamps, but it appears that Toyota has again failed to adequately test these systems to assure that they are reliable. When the lights go out while driving at night you are left with no visibility at all, a definite safety issue. This has been going on since at least 2006 with no action taken by the NHTSA. Why don't you guys do your job and require that these companies fix these obvious safety related issues caused by faulty parts or engineering!.
While the car is in operation and the headlights are switched on, the driver side or passenger side headlight illumination would intermittently fail without warning. This has occurred for the past couple thousand miles. The current mileage of the car is 39,750. The lights would function again after switching them off and back on. This happens at least once a day and has progressively been worse. Safety is a key issue here in that if both lights fail while driving at night, could seriously cause a crash or accident. An online search for other drivers of the same make and model have revealed similar incidences/experiences. I proceeded to first call the manufacturer of the vehicle to see what can be done since the vehicle is barely out of warranty range and I have noticed other drivers online have received repairs and/or parts at no-cost to them for the same incident. They wanted me to bring the car into the dealer and get a diagnosis to determine if they can reimburse me for the repairs. The dealer reports that I need two new hid (high intensity discharge) bulbs and the total cost for the repairs would be approximately $600. I had no choice but to proceed with the repairs because my safety is at stake. I called back the manufacturer, as instructed, and without even considering review of the findings of the diagnosis performed by the dealer, I was told that the repairs would not be covered at all. I proceeded to ask why some drivers reported online that their repairs were covered outside of warranty and mine would not be. I simply wanted to know the criteria for choosing who gets to have them replaced for free and who would have to pay for repairs. I was told that to their knowledge, nobody has received full reimbursement for their repairs, only a reimbursement for the difference in the cost of the bulbs (which was reduced from $300 to $150/each). Had I been told this before, I would not bring the vehicle in for a "diagnosis" for a problem I knew already.
When driving the headlights of my 2007 Prius turn off. It began happening on the passenger side headlight very intermittently, in the past few months it began happening more and more often to the point now where my passenger side headlight turns off every time I drive at night. The headlight will turn back on after switching the on/off switch but after a few seconds turns off on its own again. It mainly happens with my passenger side light but at times both headlights turn off completely. This happens unexpectedly and causes a safety issue when driving on rural roads. I am very concerned with this and the fact that Toyota has done nothing to address the issue. I understand the class action lawsuit filed, I was not a part of that as I was unaware it was even occuring.
Hid headlights work intermittently and randomly. When it first occurred, I replaced one lamp. It continued to work intermittently. Now both will work randomly. When one goes out, you can turn the headlight switch off and back on and both will work.
2007 Toyota Prius with hid headlights one headlight does not work most of the time, but not all of the time. It tends to work when having the dealer investigate, so they can't tell us why it isn't working or what it would take to fix it. This started before the warranty expired and has continued for another 40,000 miles. Recently the other one has started shutting off while driving leaving us with no headlights. They (one, occasionally both) usually come back on by turning the switch on and off, but I don't know that will always work so we could end up driving at night with no headlights.
I have a 2007 Toyota Prius. I love the car, but the headlights are a major problem. The driver side especially will all of a sudden just turn off. It will flicker and then just quit. When I turn the switch off and then on, the lights will come back on, but then a few moments later, it will go back out. This is a very dangerous issue because I drive often at night. After taking it to a dealer, and reading all of the posts about people having exactly the same problem, I am convinced it is a major issue that Toyota must address. There absolutely needs to be a recall to rectify this very dangerous problem. Thank you!.
Faulty hid headlights on 2007 Toyota Prius. The lights go out while driving. To re-activate the headlights it is necessary to turn the headlight switch to the off position and turn it back to on position to re-activate the headlights. The headlights may work for a few minutes or only a few seconds before going out again. The problem may be due to a faulty igniter or control circuit. A number of other Prius owners are reporting the same issue on online forums.
I have a 2007 Prius with hid headlights. On an intermittent basis, one of the headlights will not operate or will stop operating. Turning the lights off with the switch on the stalk will restore operation. Not a good thing to have to do on a dark two lane rural road on a dark night. As an example, yesterday during a rain filed day, the headlights were turned on as required by maryland law. We were leaving to drive to PA when my wife got in the car she noticed the right headlight was out. Off and on did not seem to make a difference. After arriving in PA, I had to drive on a dark and rain filled road and I believe that the right light was working but the left (driver side) was not. I was taking my son to the er and did not have time to trouble shoot the problem. Today, in the middle of the day, both headlights were fully functional. I first noticed this problem about 10 months ago on a night trip. The problem has occurred three or four times over the time period. I know I will get a huge bill from Toyota to replace the bulbs and that may or may not solve the problem. It is a huge safety issue.
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Prius. The contact was driving at various speeds with the headlights and suddenly they failed to operate. The failure occurred whenever the headlights were turned on. The headlights would function when the switch was turned on and off. The dealer was notified of the problem and informed him that the headlight replacement cost was $300. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000. The VIN was unavailable. Updated 1/19/2010 updated 01/27/11.
2007 Toyota Prius. Driver's side headlight goes off intermittently. First it becomes dim, then completely goes out. If I turn the light switch off and on it will go back on for a short time, but then goes off again. First noticed the problem driving on highway at night during a rain storm and had difficulty seeing.
Premature and simultaneous failure of 2007 Toyota Prius headlights. First experienced in fall of 2009 (low mileage), but now dangerously frequent. Toyota claims this is not a defect, but has no explanation for the simultaneity of failure and is only replacing the bulbs without sharing any costs. Temporary remedy is to switch the lights off and back on again.
For some time I have been telling the dealer that I have been informed that one of my headlights is out but when they look at it at a later time they are working. I suspect that they have been doing this for a long time. Now it appears that there is a progression. Both headlights unexpectedly turned off plunging me into total darkness while driving at 70 miles per hour on an interstate highway at 5:00 in the morning. I found myself hurtling along in total darkness. I turned the light switch to the off position and turned it back on and the lights came on again but they went off again a few miles later and I went through the same process to get them to come on. The situation happened at least 5-6 more times before I reached my destination.
On 10/16/2010 my husband and I attended a wedding reception at a lodge in the sierra mountains northeast of lake tahoe. The lodge was reached by driving our 2007 Toyota Prius from our hotel at lake tahoe northeast on nevada state highway 431, a steep, winding two-lane road over the summit of mt. Rose at an altitude of 7,100 feet above sea level. After the reception was over we left to return to our hotel. When we left the lodge it was early evening and the sun had set, so we drove with our headlights turned on. Approximately one mile down the road both headlights suddenly went out, plunging us into complete darkness. Since we could not see the road, which had no shoulder, a hillside on the right and a steep drop-off on the left we had no choice but to come to a complete stop. At this point we feared that we might fall victim to a vehicle ramming us from behind since we had no lights on our car. I desperately turned the headlight switch on and off trying both the regular and high-beam settings and, finally, turning the car off and on. This seemed to work and the headlights came back on. But after driving about another mile the headlights again went out. Again, by manipulating the switch and turning the engine off and then on, we managed to turn the lights back on. We then proceeded safely to our hotel without any further incidents. We experienced no additional problems until December, 2010, when we noticed that the headlights seemed to be dimmer than they should be. Then in January, 2011, one of the headlights went out permanently and we took the vehicle to a Toyota dealer for service. I wish to point out that we had no prior indication that the hid headlights were dimming or otherwise malfunctioning. Neither had we received any communication from Toyota that there could be a problem with the headlights or with the electronic control unit. Our experience on October 16, 2010, was a life-threatening situation which could have resulted in a major tragedy.
I own a 2007 Toyota Prius and have recently experienced the headlights flickering and than going completely off if you turn the switch off and than back on they work again. It first started with the passenger side and than went to the driver side and than both lights went out together. This is a safety hazard to say the least and Toyota needs to at best notify their consumers of this problem and at least assist with the cost to repair it.
Driver's side headlight is intermittent. If you turn the switch off, then back on, the headlight comes back on.
Headlight(s) inadvertently turn off while driving. Either passenger or driver side headlight(s) turn off. The headlight(s) will turn back on when the on/off switch is switched off then switched on again. Having googled this issue, I was surprised that this is a chronic complaint and Toyota is aware of this issue but has not been forced to recall. Toyota needs to recall as consumers are being charged for repairs as well as costs for fix-it tickets.
I purchased a used 2007 Prius in March 2010 from a Toyota dealership. My right headlight does not work sometimes. My first headlight failure occurred last fall. My right head light was not working while driving home (1 hour) at night from work. I called the Toyota dealer the next day where I bought the Prius. They told me it is an expensive fix ( around $250. 00) and said to try turning the power on and off switch a couple of times. That worked. The headlight failure has happened a few times since last fall. I have asked strangers while leaving work if both my headlights are on, gotten out of the car to check before driving at night, as well as check to see if both my headlights are reflected on the back of a car in front of me when at a stop light. I am aware of 3 other times that the headlight was not working. I have not had the dealership repair the headlight yet.
2007 Toyota Prius passenger headlight goes out intermittently. Will go back on if lights are switched off and on again. Received traffic citation for non-working headlight. Known issue with Toyota.
My 2007 Prius front hid headlamps shut off while I was driving down the CA 14 freeway! I turned the headlight switch off and then on to get it back working again and barely avoided an accident. Driving at 70mph and have the road go completely dark is dangerous for anyone!!!.
2007 Toyota Prius. . . Passenger side headlight had been flickering and turning itself off for past month. . When light switch is turned off then on, the light continues to work normally. While driving last night, both headlights shut off. I turned the light switch off then back on. . . Both lights came back on. I will be taking to dealer in the near future.
2007 Prius w 95,000 miles. Left hid headlight goes out after being turned on for a few minutes. Cycling the switch to off and back on returns light function, only to have it fail again a few minutes later. Replacement of hid bulbs has not resolved the problem, so this is not normal wear, but an electrical design issue with the vehicle.
