2 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2019

Air bags failed to deploy in car crash: my 2010 Prius was stuck by another car who ran a red light, in the front right (passenger side). The car that struck me was traveling approx 35mph and pushed my car (also traveling approx. 35mph) into the path of a wooden telephone pole that suspended the traffic lights over the intersection. My car traveled about 20-30 feet further and stopped when my car hit the pole head on. The telephone pole broke in two in the impact. None of my air-bags deployed. The police report is incorrect regarding the airbags. I have contacted the police department to amend the report. As seen in the accompanying photographs, the air bags did not deploy, contrary to the police report.

4 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2017

Airbag warning light illuminates. Toyota service techie's diagnostic showed a disconnected spiral cable. Techie explained that the spiral cable has electrical connections to the driver's airbag module and the driver's air bag would not deploy in an accident. He said I should install a new cable spiral assembly kit (aka "clock spring"), part # 8430747020 at a cost of nearly $1000, including over $700 for the part. I did some research. Part # 8430747020 was installed in many Toyota vehicles, and has been recalled for the same problem in the corolla, matrix, highlander, tacoma, rav4, and yaris. See safety recall e0m (e1m) April 2015, update 5/12/14. The Prius is not mentioned in the recall, although my car has the same exact problem with the identical part, and the Toyota service supervisor agrees it is the same problem and part. I explained this to the service technician and supervisor, who called Toyota, and Toyota offered to cover 50% of the cost of the part, and none of the labor cost. I asked whether they could do the same fix in my car as they do on the recalled vehicles, namely installing part # 04004-07122, and they declined. See technical instructions for safety recall e0m spiral cable replacement. Toyota should be recalling my car and fixing this problem at their expense, not just reducing the cost of the part. Second, they should not be replacing this defective part with the same defective part. They should do a fix that will last. I assume the fix they've done on all other vehicles, with part # 04004-07122, would work for my Prius. They refuse. Fyi- the airbag light has been on and off for years, and seen by Toyota during that period. This particular problem was diagnosed may 1, 2017. They believe the previous airbag warning lights were unrelated to this particular issue.

16 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2009

On December 18, 2009 at 4:40 pm in the still-light late afternoon we struck a deer in the road with our 2010 Toyota Prius.   the car was less than one month old and still on its first tank of gas. We have lived in a semi-rural area of new jersey for over 30 years.   deer in the road is a frequent occurrence here.   but in 30 years, though we have had countless sudden collision-avoidance stops in other cars including our 2007 Prius, we have never had an accident. On December 18, traveling at approximately 35 mph on dry, but aged asphalt we observed a deer entering the road.   to avoid a collision, the brakes were jammed on.   but this time the braking event seemed to occur in slow motion.   it was the first sudden stop required of this new car.   eventually the abs system engaged and the car came to a stop, but only after striking the deer with such force that the car sustained $2500 worth of front end damage.   lights, the bumper and front panels needed to be replaced.   the airbags did not deploy.   police and insurance reports were filed. Toyota has recently acknowledged a software-based delay of one second in transferring braking from the electronic regenerative system to the hydraulic brakes.   atâ  35 mph, that is an extra 51 feet traveled in that one second before the hydraulic brakes engage.   that 51 feet would have provided more than enough distance to avoid the collision. Until this unsafe condition is resolved, we have taken our 2010 Prius off the road.
