63 problems related to brake light on have been reported for the 2010 Toyota Prius. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The traction , abs and brake light comes on after driving over a small pothole.
Regenerative brakes stopped working while driving in clear conditions on the highway at 60mph, abs, traction control, and brakes lights on dash illuminated. Almost crashed as brake pedal needed to be pressed really hard and almost to the floor to stop the car. Known issue and dealer refuses to fix the problem.
I bought this car brand new in 2010. Toyota Prius hybrid. Two weeks ago the abs light, emergency brake light, and traction control lights all came on and won't go off. Dealership says I need $2000 worth of work. Brake booster/master cylinder, brake booster pump assembly, brake actuator internal leak. Brakes acting weird. Dealership says I don't need to drive car, just pay $2000 which I don't have. They said Toyota extended the warranty to December 2020, which just past. I never got letter saying it was a problem.
Abs, traction, and brake light stay on. It is the actuator brake and the cost to fix is over $2000. I have researched this issue with other 2010 Prius' and it is a common issue. This is a defect that Toyota refuses to fix even though it is very common and puts many people at risk.
I was driving down the highway and the traction control, abs, and brake light all come on. I go to use the brakes and the pedal was a lot firmer and was harder to press. The car makes a buzzing noise I believe it is the brake accumulator. I go to the nearest place to get the codes read. It came up with c1391 and I look that code up and it comes up with that code is a common issue with the Prius. I read that it could lead to brake failure.
The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that driving at 15 mph, the brakes failed to operate as needed upon depression of the brake pedal. The contact stated that several warning lights appeared on the instrument panel including the abs, tire pressure, traction control and emergency brake lights. The contact was able to drive the vehicle to haley Toyota of roanoke (1530 courtland rd ne, roanoke, va 24012) where she was informed that there was a crack in the brake booster pump assembly accumulator, a decrease in the hydraulic pressure, and a defective brake master cylinder. Upon investigation, the contact linked the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 13v235000 (service brakes) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 162,000.
The red brakes light, abs light and the 'yellow skidding car' icon lights all come on together, but intermittently. The brakes often feel difficult to press down upon starting the car. Ofter when the lights are on, the brakes feel spongy, or as though they may not stop the car. I took the car to the Toyota dealership and they concluded that the master cylinder and other parts needed replacing. I found out that Toyota has had lots of problems with these brake cylinders.
Traction warning light, brake light and abs light all came on at same time while driving on the highway. I was told by a Toyota dealership it is a malfunction with the brake booster which is roughly a $3000. 00 repair job at Toyota dealership. Customer support program "zjb" was created by Toyota north America for this issue in response to thousands of Prius models experiencing this severe malfunction, however, my 2010 Prius is no longer eligible for coverage for this repair, even though other Prius models are still eligible for complete coverage for this repair. This is a safety hazard and Toyota north America needs to stand by coverage for this grave malfunction for all models regardless of year or mileage. The dealership told me the car is not safe to drive, the brakes are not operating at full capacity. This is a safety hazard and happened while I was driving on the highway.
While driving on the higway the abs warning light, brake light and traction light all came on at once, took to local Toyota specialist, diagnosed the code as c1391, an abnormal leak in break booster accumulator. Mechanic informed me that this issue was previously under safety recall and my vehicle had the proper repairs done, clearly this is an ongoing safety issue with this vehicle that is not being properly addressed by Toyota. It is also an extremely expensive repair which Toyota needs to be financially responsible for.
Toyota USA failed to honor repair defect within the brake booster pump assembly. When this defect occurs, various warning lamps on the instrument panel made illuminate, I experience increased stopping distance, reduced hydraulic pressure within your brake system, the deactivation of brake assist, & the deactivation of vehicle stability control. Toyota previously issued at least 2 safety recalls. Designed to prevent similar dangerous occurrences. However, hundreds of thousands of Prius models 2010-2015 were excluded from those safety recalls including my 2010 model. As of today Toyota USA filed case number 2005052305. Safety recall in torrance California dated June 4, 2013 stated Toyota sales USA was conducting a voluntary safety recall involving over 87000 model 2010 Toyota Prius however I called Toyota today and the insisted my vehicle was excluded even though in barely has 100000 miles we just began to experience these brake symptoms. Customer rep insisted it was Toyota voluntary recall not enforced so my vehicle did not even qualified for a customer support service. Please help us have Toyota fix this safety issue ASAP before someone has a mayor accident. Warning lights for abs, stability control, and warning lights all came on at once. Brakes became spongy when pressed. Was able to still brake but with much more effort and not confident in the braking. I had it towed to a local mechanic and the diagnostic error code registered "c1391". Per mechanic this is for abs accumulator, or booster pump failure or leak per mechanic. This happened out of the blue, no warnings. Per Toyota the part required are cylinder assembly brake and brake pump assembly. Cost to repair these parts per Toyota would be estimated at $2700. . Attached video of actuator's loud noise it produces & dashboard showing abs failed& brakes lights/also failed attempt to solve this with Toyota USA.
The Prius have been great and have been serviced with oil changes, spark plugs etc. It runs like a champ with 159k miles, but all of a sudden one day, the traction control, abs, and brake lights all came on at once. The brake pressure feels softer and that whirring noise is heard every few seconds. Dealership said it was the brake actuator and would cost 3k to fix. Apparently there was an extended warranty for it but it ended in November 2019. Attempted to call Toyota, but no help.
I was driving on the highway at about 60 mph when the brake light, abs light and slide light illuminated on the dash. I took the car to the dealer and they said it was the brake actuator. When I researched this,I found that it is a known problem totoyota and they did a voluntary recall. My question is why would there be a voluntary recall on a part that is vital to the safety of the car and has a known defect? because it was a voluntary recall they could arbitrarily select a cut off (150,000 miles) instead of ensuring the car was safe. This is only for 2010 Prius.
The night before, everything was working fine. The next day, I start my car up at 4pm-5pm, first time I started my car and I have new lights on my dashboard. The ebrake light, abs light, brake system light, and traction light. I release my ebrake and the ebrake light is still on. Concered I checked the break fluid and the 12v battery and those were fine. Drove the car around the block to see if there was an issue or if the lights were just on. The brakes were almost completely out the vehicle would only stop when I put my foot to the floor. I end up taking the vehicle to my local Toyota dealership were after four hours of looking around, informed me that it was the brake actuator and the booster pump. Which also came with a bill of $3000 to fix it.
The abs/brake light/ slip inidicator warning triangle on & off. My 2010 Toyota Prius ii has 153k mile. This has gone on/off for a few weeks now. The brake seems to loose the hydraulic power brake. I feel like the brakes have failed a few times while driving at higher speeds. I have to pump brake and vehicle begins to brake on 2nd pump. I've had to triple my stopping distance as to not rear anyone. I went to autoshop, they said it's the brake actuator/sensors that need to be replaced and it's expensive $2-3k. They said it need to be fix soon because brake might fail at any time. I called camelback Toyota, phoenix, az, ed in service dept said there is no safety recall for this even though they know it has been a common problem with Priuses . I checked vehicle repair history looks like abs programming was flashed back in 2/11/2010, when vehicle was still on the manufacturer, 3 miles. I have not fixed yet. Please research this issue further for safety reasons. I do not want to kill anyone when brakes will eventually fail.
The car was moving when the traction light, abs light and brake lights all came on. Thhe brakes felt a little different then. I could still brake but they were more stiff.
When the brakes are applied and going over a rough road surface, or pothole, the brake warning light appears, and the brakes suddenly stop functioning until back on a smooth road surface. This happens all of the time under these conditions. It is really scary when the vehicle suddenly loses all braking while trying to stop. I have a 2010 Toyota Prius and a 2012 Toyota Prius. They both have the same problem with the abs braking system. Cannot understand why this is not a full recall on this potentially dangerous condition.
Brake actuator keeps activating every 10 seconds. The cars abs, traction control, and brakes error lights have all come on. Brakes are compromised in some manner which can pose serious safety issues while driving.
Brake pedal goes to floor. Brake light is on. Dealer says accumulator pump is bad. There is a recall for this item. They replaced it under recall in 2014 and refuse to do it again. Quoted $2000 to repair. Called Toyota customer service and they won't do anything either. It is a safety issue and still having the same safety issues is not ok. I am 6 months pregnant and cannot afford to fix an item that should be covered for life of the vehicle due to this recall.
After regular check-ups and maintenance at 90000 miles and 8 years of driving, all of a sudden three brake lights came on, the abs, hand brake, and skid control lights all came on. At this time the braking issues seem to be less responsive braking and slight jerking when putting constant pressure on the brakes at low speeds. When brought to the Toyota dealership, they noted that there are no issues, however the master brake cylinder is likely to fail soon.
I took my Prius to the dealer because the brake light was on, to resolve the problem the dealer replaced my master cylinder and brake booster and brake booster pump assembly. I found that there is a recall for the 2010 Prius. T-cp-dom date of issue July 1, 2013. The recall is for the same problem I had, I do not know why I am being excluded from the recall. Please reply.
I took my Prius to the dealer because the brake light was on, to resolve the problem they replaced my master cylinder and booster on my 2010 Prius. I asked about a recall for the parts. I was told no recalls, I found that there is a recall for 2010 Prius. T-cp-dom date of issue July 1, 2013. The recall is for the same problem I had.
Abs light on / traction light on / brake light on !!!!!!!! code c1391abnormal leak in accunulator !!!!!!! $3,000 estimate fix !!!!!!!!!!! comon Toyota proble!!!!!!!! recall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Brake actuator has failed. Traction control, abs, brake lights illuminated on dash. More effort needed to engage brakes. This affects the regenerative braking as it no longer charges on braking as it was designed. Checked Toyota website for recalls since this is safety related, and there are none. Which is quite disturbing. I've researched Prius forums and this seems to be an ongoing problem. Toyota issued a recall for the generation 2 model, however this seems to be a problem for generation 3 models as well. The problem did occur when on the highway traveling at 60 mph.
Abs and brake lights "turned on" on the dashboard while driving along freeway. Had to push the brake pedal harder to stop the car. Search online on what might be causing the warning lights, it was found out that so many Toyota Prius car owners were having the same issue. The symptom was caused by either faulty accumulator or master cylinder/actuator.
The other day my brake light, traction, and abs light came on. Took it to the mechanic and they said it's code c1391 - abnormal leak in the accumilator, electrical issue, and I must go to the dealer. I've seen others complain about this. Shouldn't this be a recall?.
The traction light, the abs light and the brake light appear on the dash. I have already paid the mechanic approximatly $1,500 for repairs and now I am told I need the abs brake booster which costs an additional $2,546. 26. This part has been recalled on other 2010 Toyota Prius models, but not mine. I cannot afford this fix, so I am driving my car as it is. Brake pedal acts differently each time I use the brakes.
A tire blew out on the highway, and afterwards the abs light, brake light, and traction light came on. Apparently the brake acuator has failed completely.
Copied the below from another complaint because this guy is having the exact same issue I am having, I bought the car Aug 2017 right before the period to get it replaced expired, was never notified in any way of this warranty change so how am I supposed to know I have a defective part on my car. . But the dealership still sold it to me, now a month after the eligibility to get it repaired expires, my brakes die and Toyota says they wont help nor is the dealership responsible for selling me the car without checking if the recalled part was replaced. They also keep mentioning the extended warranty on the actuator is only for "certain VIN's". So they are gonna extend the warranty on certain 2010 Prius' but not all of them. . This makes no sense. . Please help my 2010 Prius is having issues as same as the safety recall back in 2013 ( 13v-235 ). The abs light, vsc light, and brake light were on after a bumpy rooad in my neighborhood. I brought it to the dealer and they indicated that there was a leak in the accumulator. After reset the system, all the lights went off but I still feel the losses of pressure on the brake pedal. However, my car has 0 open recall and the dealer quoted me over 5k for the repair which is ridiculous compare to the value of the car.

Brake lights came on while driving on freeway. Power brakes seemed to fail and a large amount of pressure was required to stop vehicle. Toyota of fort worth dealership diagnosed that the actuator needed to be replaced. We performed repair (at a cost of roughly $2,000. ) a few days later on a longer drive the brake lights turned back on. We returned it to the dealership and were told that the brake booster/master cylinder assembly needed to be replaced at an additional cost of $2,900. I notice that Toyota had a recall for this part on other 2010 Prius vehicles but my vehicle is not included in that recall.
I took my 2010 Prius in for airbag work & they asked how long I had been driving w/ my brake warning lights on. They had not been on prior to then. They hooked up a computer & showed me that the vehicle had been started 31 times since the warning was 1st detected. They said there was most likely a leak in the brake booster system. They reset the warning, I drove for a day & it came back on again while driving after about 10 starts. After the warning lights came on again, I noted an immediate & significant change in braking responsiveness & vehicle control. . . Started pulling to the right. This was on the highway while driving straight. I took the car in to a local Toyota dealer for full diagnostic & they said that they're were unable to locate the exact leak location, but that their tech order shows to just replace the booster which will cost about $3,300 o replace.
Several brake lights came on the dash while my wife was driving and the brake pedal had a different sensation. She said it still worked, but felt very different - enough that she would have thought something was wrong even if the lights hadn't come on. I took it to a local shop who said it had to go to dealership. Dealer wanted $3983 to repair saying that abs accumulator was bad. In doing research I discovered that many Prius' were recalled, but unfortunately my VIN was not included in the recall. Also discovered that Toyota issued an "enhanced warranty program (zg1) for models 2004-2009. But my newer model (2010) is not included in the enhanced warranty program. It feels like Toyota knows they have a problem, but are not standing behind their vehicles. I contacted Toyota corporate customer service and spoke with two different individuals who confirmed that because my VIN number did not match the recalls, there was nothing Toyota would do for me.
Abs brake light stays on all time. Rear wheel gets extremely hot,.
All brake lights come on (brake, abs and traction control) and power assist breaking stops working and brakes feel very weak. Brake actuator runs frequently when lights are not on. There are many complaints online and Toyota claimed they fixed this issue in 2009 and extended the warranty for 2009 and earlier, but the problem is clearly not fixed.
My wife was driving on the highway when her brakes totally failed. She applied brake pressure as hard as she could, but it had not effect. Fortunately, since she was in the left lane of the interstate highway, she was able to coast to a stop in the left hand shoulder. Several red lights lit up on the dashboard, including the brake and abs lights. I had the car towed to world Toyota dealership in atlanta. They said the brake master cylinder failed. I paid them to fix it. See attached work order from world Toyota.
