Brake Light On problems of the 2010 Toyota Prius - part 2

63 problems related to brake light on have been reported for the 2010 Toyota Prius. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

36 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2016

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Prius. While driving at an unknown speed, the brake pedal was depressed but it took a greater amount of time to stop the vehicle. The contact applied excessive force to the brake pedal. The abs and brake warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that a brake pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign number: 13v235000 (service brakes). The failure mileage was 96,000.

37 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/09/2016

At 46,900 miles without any warning all the brake warning lights came on and braking effectiveness dropped off. Have to push pedal to the floor to get the car to stop the lights for traction control, anti lock brakes and the word "brake" and another light like a circle are on all the time normally there is strong braking when first touch the brake pedal but now very limited braking until push down very hard on the brake pedal. Looked at brake fluid and it is full, do not know why the brakes are not working.

38 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/25/2016

Driving on highway the abs and brake warning lights came on and an alarm started sounding. I waited until light traffic applied brakes pedal felt like I was pressing on a brick, no braking occurred I pressed harder, the brakes became softer went to the floor and the brake pads grabbed hard on the wheels. There is no controlled braking on the car. Dealership says the brake booster pump failed, this is the same year model that had braking problems related to nitrogen in the break lines caused by a failed brake booster pump. The VIN is also very close to affected vehicles. Fortunately when this occurred I was in a position to navigate to where I could test the brakes in a fairly controlled environment. Had it happened in heavy traffic it would have almost certainly resulted in a serious accident.

39 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2016

Tl the contact owns a 2010 Toyota Prius. Each time the vehicle was driven, it shook, stalled, and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. In addition, the contact had to depress the brake pedal with excessive pressure for the brake lights to illuminate. Also, the horn failed to function. The vehicle was taken to south bay Toyota (located at 18416 s western Ave, gardena, CA 90248, (310) 323-7800), but was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was later taken to autonation Toyota cerritos (located at 18700 studebaker rd, cerritos, CA 90703, (562) 802-4000), but was not diagnosed or repaired due to the repair fees. The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign number: 18v684000 (hybrid propulsion system). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

40 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/24/2015

Car came out of the car wash and as I got ready to pull out the brake light came on and there was a rapid beep. Pushed on the brakes and felt no resistance like brakes did not exist. Had the car towed to the dealer (right Toyota on frank lloyd - scottsdale az) - dealer ran a software to fix it (part of a recall) but that did not fi x the issue. Dealer asked me to have hydro booster pump and the assembly replaced - they charged me $4200 for parts and labor. I was forced to pay as they said they tried to fix it throught he software but it did not. I feel that Toyota is repsonsible for the system failure - the brakes are critical - they suddenly stoped working. It could have been fatal if I was on the road when it happened. The failure should be gradual and there should be a certain warning if the pump was malfunctioning. I need your help in resolving this. Toyota should be responsibelf ro paying the invoice.

41 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2013

On October 10th, 2013 at 7 pm, I noticed several brake lights, abs, and sliding sign light came on when I started my car. I thought it was some kind of electrical glitch so I turned my car off and turned it back on. The lights stayed same. My husband who sat on the passenger side looked into the manual book and told me those lights were indicated for brake system. We decided to go home to figure out what we needed to do. As soon as I started to drive, I noticed brake pedal was much lower than it usually is and also noticed brake was not working. My car kept moving even when I pressed the brake all the way. At that moment, I knew I had to take my car to dealer right away. There were no warning signs or noise for a driver to notice before the whole brake system was completely fail to perform. In January 2013, Toyota recalled many Prius in same model and same yr as mine for total break system failure. Even though my VIN number was not under their recall list, my car's brake system broke down completely to function due to same reasons Toyota recalled many Prius 2010 this year. Toyota refused to fix my car under their recall system warranty because my VIN number is not under their recall list. Toyota dealer charged me $4300 to replace the whole brake system for my car and it took 4 weeks to find the parts in north America to fix my car. It costed me another $1000 to rent a car while my Prius at Toyota dealer to find the parts to fix it. I was fortunate enough that my brake system didn't blow out on me when I was driving 75mph on freeway. I'm sure there are many other Prius 2010 have brake system failure like mine even though they were not under their recall list.

42 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2013

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that the vehicle was included in and repaired under NHTSA campaign id number: 13v235000 (service brakes). After the repair was performed, the contact was driving approximately 25 mph when the brake pedal was abnormally traveled to the floor board, and the brake and abs light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where the technician stated that the brakes would have to be bled. The brakes were bled however, the failure persisted. The dealer also replaced the brake booster and master cylinder twice. The brake power stroke sensor was also replaced but none of the repairs were able to correct the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 93,000. Updated 12/24/lj.

43 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

Vehicle has no brakes at all, we turned the ignition on and the car start beeping, brake light its on, abs light on and slip indicator light is on.

44 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2012

When I started to drive home, the car was lurching while braking. It was an uncontrolled acceleration. Once I got on the freeway, my brake light, abs light and slippage lights all came on at once (along with beeping noise that does not go away). I pulled over to the side of road and noticed that my brakes had degraded by about 75 percent. . . . . While I did have some brakes it would have not been enough for an emergency stop or normal traffic braking.

45 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2011

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Prius. While driving approximately 40 mph, the contact was able to abnormally depress the brake pedal into the floorboard. The abs warning, traction control warning and the emergency brake warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. After continually depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle came to a stop. The failure recurred four different times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician advised the contact that the brake power booster would have to be replaced but did not guarantee that the booster was the actual cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 55,000.

46 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2011

Car abs light comes on, and at the same time vehicle loses brake assist or brake assist becomes uneven. Car has had three brake light failures - 1 with previous owner and 2 with current owner. First failure was repaired by resetting the computer, we think. With current owner, dealer has replaced the antilock sensor two times, and with the second sensor replacement Toyota now has pronounced the vehicle as safe. Since the brakes failed after the first sensor replacement, we have little confidence that the problem was solved with the second sensor replacement. We are concerned about vehicle safety, especially since the car is frequently driven in heavy washington beltway traffic. Typically car runs for some time and then fails, so we do not know if and when it will happen again. Dealer and Toyota have been unsupportive to our concerns.

47 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2010

Toyota Prius accelerates suddenly when driven over bumps, such as speed bumps or other bumps in the road, usually when going under 30mph, and often with the brakes being lightly pressed.

48 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2010

My prior Prius was repurchased by Toyota 09/09 with severe electrical issues which only escalated. I believe the man in CA because that happened to us on the highway, and our car behaved as if it were 'possessed'. Now my 2010 is having intermittent issues, including an anti-skid/ braking light that we'd thought was remedied by resetting an abs actuator Friday-it was on since test driving the car-but I was told many excuses, and eventually they were aware but did not know how to correct this. (?) I'm concerned about driving this vehicle as my 2007 trapped us in the car twice-911 called in a panic-plus my small daughter's safety was at risk just by owning that crazy car. Please see if you can locate that car and inspect it-you will see this is not some chance situation-and now I am extremely concerned about our new car 'performing as designed' when brake warning light comes on when applied! feel free contacting me on this!!.

49 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2010

Today I drove the car to see what would happen if the car was accelerating and I wanted to stop it other than putting on the brakes and hitting the park button. I was trying to reproduce the conditions which have resulted in numerous accidents and more than one life. While slightly accelerating I first tried to stop the car by pressing the power button. This did nothing. I then pressed the brake pedal on the left side which is your hand brake, hard until the brake light came on and the alarm sounded. In spite of this the car kept going! the only way I could stop the car was by stopping the car with the foot brake and then pressing the park button.

50 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2010

The brake lights on my 2010 Toyota Prius do not illuminate under light braking. There is a very discernible "gap" after depressing the brake pedal before the brake lights illuminate. Under light braking, the brake lights will not warn the driver of the car behind me that I am actually braking. This results in people tailgating me, and sometimes sounding their horn signal at me, while I am slowing down. Once the pedal is depressed far enough -- under moderate to severe braking -- the brake lights will eventually illuminate. This has been confirmed by several CO-workers and friends who also own this model of Prius. All of our cars have the same issue with the brake light switch.

51 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/26/2010

Braking system. I notice that as I pull up to a stop sign while driving, I apply the brakes lightly to slow down gradually. I have noticed multiple times that when I hit a bumpy spot or a pothole, the car loses it braking capacity. I mash the brake down harder to slow down if necessary and then it works fine. I don't know if it is related to the car's ability to absorb kinetic energy and recharge the hybrid battery or what. I also noticed one day when it began to snow heavily, the roads were very slippery and I almost skidded off the road as I applied the brakes.

52 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/26/2010

I own a 2010 Prius and took the car into the local Toyota dealer 2 days ago for the initial 5,000 mile check up to discuss a couple issues I have found with the car. I have experienced on 3 occasions a feeling of brake failure. This has occurred when I am driving over rough road. While the brake is being applied if I hit bumps, the brake pedal drops and I lose the brakes. I have immediately let up on the brake and then reapplied pressure to the brake pedal to get braking back. The dealer tried to achieve the same problem but was unable to replicate it. He said it was just the way the pedal must feel to me. Our daughters both have 2006 Prius' which I have driven and never experienced this problem with their car brakes. The second problem is with cruise control. Again, I have driven a 2006 Prius and used cruise control and not experienced the following in the 06 model that occurs in our 2010 model. The car started to accelerate in cruise mode. We have also found it takes a lot of pressure on the brake pedal to take it out of cruise control. The car jerks when tapping the brake pedal lightly to take off cruise control. The dealer again took it out for a test drive and said this is the way the Prius feels. I know driving the 2006 model it was not the way the Prius feels when you take it out of cruise control.

53 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/23/2010

Regarding my 2010 Toyota Prius: brakes did not engage. It was raining; I was slowing to make a right turn into a parking lot and merged into the turn lane, applied the brakes just prior to driving over a drainage grate, and car's brakes did not respond. I released my foot from the brake pedal and then re-engaged it, whereas the brakes responded. Incidents very similar to this happened two prior times when backing out of my driveway (not raining). The brake warning light also goes on unexpectedly while idling at a traffic light or when coasting to a stop (not stopping suddenly). When this happens, I have to place the car into park and then back into drive. I inquired about these issues with the Toyota dealer and have been advised that they have had no complaints of this nature with their 2010 Priuses.

54 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2010

1) driving at about 35 to 40 mph on a flat smooth road approaching a red light. Applying the brakes lightly to slow down before stopping. Hit a shallow pothole on right side. Probably a manhole cover. 2) very quickly, lasting only a split second, the brakes seemed to come loose and then re-engage. This didn't get my attention too much the first time, but then it happened a few weeks later again at the same place under the same conditions. It is apparently repeatable with my 2010 Prius! 3) nothing done yet. Does not seem to be severe enough to warrant worrying about right now.

55 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2010

We own a 2010 Toyota Prius and noticed that the car "kicks" a little when applying the brakes lightly. We didn't think much of it at first because we live in chicago and the streets are quite weathered. We thought the "kicks" we felt might be the car bumping along uneven roads. Thankfully, we have not been involved in any accidents. Other than this issue, we are pleased with the car.

56 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2010

I own a 2010 Toyota Prius. I have noted that there is a frequent occurrence of the brakes not working properly especially going over rough road (ie railroad tracks). The car appears to skid but the anti locks brake light does not come on like it does when the anti lock brakes are working. This is an anxious situation as it feels like the brakes are not going to be able to stop the vehicle. It creates anxiety and a need to apply more foot pressure to control the car.

57 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2010

On December 29, 2009 we purchased a 2010 Toyota Prius. Within a few days we experienced brake problems while backing up and applying the brakes lightly. The Prius stopped abruptly many times before we were in a position to move forward. This has happened on a number of times; however, this behavior is intermittent. And on another occasion the car veered to the right while traveling forward and applying the brakes in an emergency situation.

58 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2009

We own a 2010 Prius purchased oct 2009 and are experiencing the same problems described in the press for the brake failure problem car jumps, or brakes slightly unresponsive, temporarily loss of brake power. Problem happens at slow speeds but seems intermittent. No action has been taken, Toyota not yet contacted.

59 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/19/2009

The roads were covered with snow and were quite slippery. I was coming down a hill to a stop sign at about 10 mph. I hit the brakes lightly, the abs engaged (I could hear/feel the brakes pulse), but the car didn't slow down much. I jammed on the brakes, the abs was still engaged and the car finally stopped in the middle of the intersection, again slowing down very slowly. If it had not been a four-way stop, somebody would have hit me! I kept driving and the same thing kept happening to I hit the brakes, the abs engaged and the car stopped very slowly. In some cases, it felt like the car even accelerated a little bit before finally (and slowly) coming to a stop. I am a mechanical engineer and used to work for general motors - I have driven lots of cars - and this has never happened to me before. I immediately drove home and drove my 2002 Honda civic (which does not have anti-lock brakes) down the same road. While the car did slide in the snow, it stopped in about one-third the distance of my Prius. There is definitely something the matter with the braking system and/or the traction control system when the abs engages.

60 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2009

Temporary loss of braking on 2010 Toyota Prius on uneven pavement. One occurrence on 10/20/2009. An earlier occurrence also occurred on uneven pavement - probably in September 2009, but I do not have a record of the date. The dealership performed the recall maintenance today (02/16/2010). Please note that the car also exhibits extreme braking immediately after a cold start under wet conditions. This extreme braking is unlike any other cars previously owned over nearly 40 years. The extreme braking does subside after a short distance if the brakes are lightly applied while driving accelerator is depressed to maintain speed.

61 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

I have noticed an issue with the brakes not working for a second when I am going downhill in the parking garage, and going over a speed bump, when I go over the bump while the brakes are slightly pressed, it momentarily loses braking after going over the bump. I think it is an issue with switching from regenerative braking, to regular mechanical braking. I am able to repeat the issue consistently in one location in a parking structure that I park in. I noticed it around oct 2009 and have been noticing it since then.

62 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2009

Regenerative braking disengages for a second or two before mechanical braking takes over causing car to lurch forward/accelerate when braking on uneven road surfaces. This effect was noticed twice at speeds less than 15 mph when front tires hit ruts in road attempting to brake at stop lights or when going around a corner. I try to drive close to the right curb on the even road surface to avoid breaking when pot holes/ruts are present in my lane where other cars typically drive.

63 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/01/1901

S10 appropriate handling re 2010 Toyota Prius safety complaints. The consumer stated the cruise control does not immediately cancel, controlling the throttle under light braking. This allowed the vehicle to accelerate up a hill while the consumer was simultaneously applying the brakes. The brake lights did not come on under light braking and the brakes did not work when braking over rough surfaces such as railroad tracks.
