151 problems related to brakes failed have been reported for the 2010 Toyota Prius. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
2010 Toyota Prius. Consumer states problem with the abs system the consumer stated the first time he went to the dealer for the abs problem, they were unable to find a defect. One month later, the consumer returned to the dealer and they reprogrammed the abs and the brakes worked fine for about one week. Soon, the brakes began slipping again and ultimately, the consumer crashed into another vehicle. The consumer stated it seemed the brakes would fail when he applied the brake, released his foot and then braked again.
The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Prius. The contact was braking from approximately 30 mph and approaching a traffic stop when the brakes failed. The contact veered off the road and crashed into a snow bank. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and the contact was advised that they would have to turn the vehicle over to the manufacturer and wait for a diagnostic on the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was approximately 4,000.
When braking over rough road, brakes fail.
My 2010 Prius' brakes did not respond while on the road on 1/22/11. Then 2x again on 1/23/11. As a consumer, I do not know who regulates car companies but I have called the manufacturer and they need to 'duplicate' the problem. In the past, my brakes would accelerate before it would catch and the problem was not 'duplicated' by the dealer. This time the brakes failed me 3x within 24 hours and I am extremely concerned. I would like to know which government agency to report it to and what better options I have to get a resolution.
My driving record was clean until this 2010 Prius. In one year I have had two accidents and several incidents, all of which I am now convinced due to brake failure. The first accident took place end of December 2010. I was going only about 10 mph. I hit the brakes repeatedly to try to get the car to stop. At the time I thought the car did not stop because of ice, but now after this 2nd accident and researching other Prius reports, I am convinced this first accident was also because the brakes failed to work. Since I did not suspect this at the time, I did not report it or have the brakes checked when the car was repaired. The 2nd accident was last night, Dec 8th, 2011. I was traveling between 25-30 mph. The brakes clearly failed to work, and I hit a car stopped at the traffic light in front of me. I had plenty of distance to stop. The car did not slow down, if anything, it may have speeded up, but I cannot definitely say this, as I was too freaked out looking at the car I was going to hit to check my speed. The road was not icy. The impact demolished the front end of the Prius. My air bag also did not inflate. I have whiplash from this second accident. Fortunately no one else was injured. I now realize I had several other brake 'slippage' problems last winter that did not result in accidents and I did not identify then as brake problems. I thought it was my snow tires, even though they were brand new. I took the car back to the tire dealer last month who said they had no other complaints about that brand of tire, but I so concerned I had them replace the tires anyway with new ones of a different brand. I have opened a case with Toyota after I started to research 2010 Prius and found a recall on this model and year from before I leased this car. Toyota says there is not a recall on my VIN#. I want Toyota to take responsibility for this accident and take back the car.
Brake failure. 2010 Toyota Prius iv -- the vehicle's brakes lose pressure and the brake pedal loses pressure (regardless of how hard I press on the brakes as this is happening). The brakes are temporarily disabled and the vehicle unexpectedly accelerates as a result of its momentum prior to initializing the brakes. The failure occurs when the vehicle passes over a dramatic change in the texture/friction of the road surface. I have experienced the failure dozens of times, when driving over metal surfaces (manhole covers, pothole covers, temporary construction covers, metal expansion inserts in bridges, etc), as well as small patches of condensation (such as small puddles under a bridge when the surrounding road is dry). The failure is not related to hydroplaning, and has occurred at speeds as low as 15 mph. The failure causes the vehicle to accelerate until a few seconds after it has passed over the slick surface. After returning to the regular road surface, the brakes slowly regain traction and resume their function of slowing the vehicle down. This failure occurs every time these criteria are met -- regardless of whether road conditions are wet or dry. So far no accidents have resulted from this failure on my vehicle, but I have been unable to control the problem or decrease its effects. Again, this problem occurs even at low speeds, such as in city traffic while braking to stop at an intersection. Many times it has caused me to nearly hit the vehicle in front of mine. So I have been forced to leave an extra 40 feet between my vehicle and anything in front of me, which is not always feasible because I live in an urban area. I have already taken this vehicle into the Toyota dealership as part of their recall to fix the software which controls the interactions between the hybrid brakes and the normal disk brakes. Local dealerships have consistently denied that there is a problem with the vehicle and the Toyota company will not return my phone calls.
The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Prius. While driving 20 mph over rough terrain the contact applied the brakes and they failed to engage. The vehicle was not repaired nor was there a diagnostic test performed. There were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages were 6000.
1. Pulling in to a parking space, slight uphill angle, stepped on brake and car lurched forward over a barrier and into another vehicle. 2. The vehicle gave no prior indication of a problem. Extensive damage to hood, bumper, right fender and radiator. 3. Vehicle was towed to a repair facility. Once repaired, vehicle was taken to dealer for diagnostic of brake failure problem where it currently remains.
Brakes do not work when decelerating and road is uneven or bumpy. We took the car in for the recall fix and the problem persists. Brake failure happens 3-4 times/ week driving in seattle.
Toyota Prius braking problem; I had the "recall" fix applied; I have noticed in the last two weeks that the car has started to have brake failure again when going over bumpy surfaces. It had been fine for a while, but this started happening again. I have contacted dealership regarding the same.
(this compliant is being marked for deletion because it is an inadvertent duplicate of odi# 10343621) the contact's brother owned a 2010 Toyota Prius. The contact stated her brother died in a head on crash. While he was driving at approximately 65mph north bound, a truck waiting at a traffic light was rear ended by another truck pushing the truck into the contact's brother lane of traffic. The contact stated witnesses advised her that brakes failed on her brother's vehicle and he was not able to bring the vehicle to stop when he saw the truck approaching. The police report was not available. The VIN was unknown. The failure and the current mileage was 21,000.

Brake failure occurred when vehicle was coming off freeway exit ramp at approximately 40 mph on uneven, curvy road. While approaching intersection from several hundred feet away, brakes failed to engage for about a second; also felt the vehicle "lurch" forward in that lapse of time. Repeated pressure on the brakes finally brought car to stop but not in time to prevent collision with incoming pickup truck on straightaway traffic. Police arrived at scene but did not file report because nobody was injured. Body shop estimated damage on front bumper at $1500. Vehicle was brought in to dealer on 05/18/2010 for inspection. Service manager said ecu brake recall had been conducted on said vehicle in February 2010 at different dealership. Currently still awaiting on conclusive report from Toyota engineers. Car only has 1000 miles on odometer. Brake failure has been experienced some ten times in the 2 months of owning this vehicle, usually during higher speeds over uneven road. Came close to accidents on three instances, not including this actual one. This is a serious safety defect that could result in fatalities. Please investigate!.
I received delivery of my newly purchased 2010 Prius on 10/17/09. The brakes locked up on several occasions during Nov and Dec 2009, on rough roads and during slippery conditions. I had the brakes checked 1/2/10 by the Toyota dealer; they were unable to duplicate the conditions. On approximately 2/4/10, the brakes failed during an ice storm and the car ended up on someone's front lawn. There were no injuries or property damage, thus the incident was not reported. Following this incident, I took the car to the Toyota dealer for inspection and received a loaner car. While the dealer had my car, Toyota issued a recall for the Prius' brakes. The brakes on my Prius were reprogrammed 2/9/10. Since then I have had four instances where the brakes locked up, the latest of which was 4/21/10. The car is currently at the Toyota dealer being inspected. The car was purchased at colonial Toyota in milford and all subsequent service has been performed by that dealer.
I have a 2010 Toyota Prius that was recalled and repaired in March 2010. On April 4, 2010 I was driving the car with my wife and was under normal braking conditions when I pressed the brakes and they acted like they were anti-lock. The pedal skipped and went to the floor. It was so noticeable that my wife asked what just occurred and I told her the brakes failed for a second. I was at about 20-30 miles per hour when this occurred coming up to a stop light. Again the car was taken in for the recall prior to this.
2010 Toyota Prius. Consumer states brake problems. The consumer stated it appeared as if the software patch for the 2010 Prius was not enough as he has experienced one more occurrence since getting the patch on March 1, 2010. Prior to the software patch, the consumer experienced brake stuttering may be 10 times. The consumer stated he read where the switch from regenerative to mechanical braking occurred at about 9 mph he noticed that the brake stuttering seemed to occur closer to 20 mph. It would not just occur when hitting a small pothole, but sometimes with just steady braking on smooth surfaces. On a smooth surface, the feeling would be a bit of a jerk. He would decelerate with pressure against the seat belt and his hands on the steering wheel, then there would be 1/4 of a second where there was no pressure because the brakes were not working, then he would jerk forward as the brakes began to work again, there was a somewhat different sensation when hitting a small pothole. The most recent momentary brake failure occurred while stopping for a red light. The consumer stated he slowed down to 20 mph when he felt a different type of stuttering than previously. It may have been a double stuttering, but it seemed harder.
The recall repair to the brake system on my Toyota 2010 Prius did not fix the intermittant brake failure that is the focus of the Prius recall. Dealer installed "fix" twice but the delay in braking and feeling of additional torque when braking on rough and/or wet pavement still occours.
2010 Prius brake ecu update did not solve problem. This is an update to a prior complaint, reference # 10300235. The brakes failed under the same circumstances and exhibited the same behavior as in the previous complaint. The dealer, huntington Toyota, allegedly updated the ecu on 2/24/2010. The car loses braking ability briefly while slowing down (below 10 mph) and passing over a rough road surface or pothole. The sensation is one of the car surging forward. This has happened several time since the upgrade, the latest occurrence being 3/11/2010.
The Prius purchased 1/3/10. On 3/6/10 the vehicle would not stop and hit another car. The vehicle was towed to north hollywood Toyota. The brakes failed to operate causing the Prius to hit another car. This all occurred within the county of los angeles, California. The vehicle can be examined for this defect.
My 2010 Prius had the brake software updated before I purchased it. I have owned the car for 12 days. During that time I have experienced a braking problem on 3 instances. In each case I was slowing down at a constant rate of deceleration when I hit a pothole or other rough surface. For a split second the rate of deceleration was interrupted. In other words it felt like I had let up on the brake which I did not do. On the third incident my wife was a passenger in the car and also noticed that for a split second it felt like I eased off the brake. I took my car to the Toyota dealer to make sure the software had been updated. They confirmed that it had and make a note of my experience. I have read about the problem with the brakes on the hybrid Ford fusion and the problem with my car may be the same. That is that the road bump prompts the computer to momentarily interrupt the regenerative braking and thus make it feel like the brakes failed.
Complaint regarding: 2010 Toyota Prius. Since I purchased the car in September of 2009, the brakes fail when I am braking and hit a bump, pothole, or uneven road surface. The brakes fail for a second or two, and sometimes the car lurches forward. The issue occurs approximately once a day, every day. On March 6, 2010, I had the recall software for the 2010 Prius done in the service department at the mike calvert Toyota dealership in houston, texas. On the way home, I experienced the brake failure again when I was braking and drove over a small pothole. I experienced the problem later that day when braking to stop at a red light, the pavement surface descended slightly beneath the car, the brakes lapsed, and the car lurched forward. I called the dealership. They referred to the materials supplied by Toyota and told me to call Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 to notify Toyota that the recall fix did not work. Upon calling this number and navigating the options on the automated system, I sat through a long recording stating that there was a recall of the 2010 Prius. The option available to speak with an agent did not allow me to do so.
I have a 2010 Prius which I took to champion Toyota in houston for the recall repair on February 12. According to them they performed the brake recall software repair. However, on 3/3 when I was driving home from work I experienced the brake failure problem again.
I experience the brake failure on Prius 2010, I took the car in the dealer to fix it but dealer told me that the firmware already up to date on my car.
The contact has a 2010 Toyota Prius. A crash occurred when the brakes failed to stop the vehicle. The contact stated that he applied pressure to the brake pedal to no avail. The vehicle was traveling 15 mph at the time of the failure. The weather conditions were a factor and the road was covered with snow and ice at the time. The current and failure mileage was 8,000. Updated 06/28/jb.
2/13, the day after my car was "fixed" under the recall, my brakes failed. I was on the way to the airport, and the brakes failed . When I returned home from my trip, I brought it in to Toyota kearny mesa in san diego, who found nothing wrong. My brakes failed again a week ago. I was driving on a smooth road, slowing down for a light, when suddenly the car speeded up and I went straight though the red light. No cars were nearby, so I did not crash and no one was hurt. Again, Toyota found nothing wrong. They tell me that they can't fix it unless they can "replicate" the problem. They want me to return the loaner car tomorrow morning and drive home with my Prius and I'm scared.
Braking for upcoming traffic light and when went over a rough spot in road, brakes temporarily failed.
My 2010 Prius brakes failed momentarily twice while going over ruts in the road; I was able to keep control of the car and the brakes resumed working right afterwards.
I own a 2010 Toyota Prius which I purchased in August 2009. When I drive down a bumpy hill near my home, the brakes temporarily fail to hold if I am braking while going over the bumps themselves. It feels like the car it taking off after each bump. I believe I am experiencing the same problem as other Prius owners are. Thank you for you attention to this matter.
Temporary brake failure when braking over potholes or braking in a turn.
Brake failure on 2010 Prius in snowy conditions. I was driving with my 11 year old daughter going less than 10 miles per hour approaching a busy intersection. The brakes would not engage and I could not stop before entering the intersection. I was almost hit by a bus. The bus saw me and sped up thus avoiding a tragedy. Also, the other oncoming traffic was able to stop and avoid me. My daughter and I were very fortunate. I am horrified and want this corrected.
Driving my 2010 Prius today, I experienced a brake failure such as the one I've been hearing about on the news. Here's what happened: I was braking, slowing to a stop approaching a stoplight (going no faster than 10 mph at the time), my car rolled over a manhole cover that was slightly lower than the surface of the road (no more than one inch deep) and suddenly it felt like my car was gliding on ice with no ability to stop, the brakes had completely failed; additionally, I heard a slight grinding sound come from the front right wheel well. I took my foot off the brake, re-depressed the pedal, and everything was instantly back to normal. The duration of the incident was no more than a second, but it was terribly alarming just the same. Following this incident, I have contacted two different Toyota dealerships' service departments who stated that they did not currently have any repair plans for this problem, apologized for the "inconvenience," and one of the dealerships (Toyota of hollywood (CA)) took my phone number while the other dealership told me to wait for a letter from Toyota. I inquired of Toyota of glendale (CA) if I should get a rental car for the time being (hoping to be offered a loaner) and they told me not to, and to 'drive safe. ' I'm totally livid, this is a very scary problem to experience.
Like many others, I too have experienced the brake problem with the 2010 Prius. When going over a pothole (while using the brake), the brake fails momentarily and the car lurches forward.
Temporary loss of control of my vehicle as I was going over a speed bump. I felt like my brakes had failed.
When driving over uneven terrain (ie. ; railroad tracks, bumps in the road) my 2010 Prius seems to accelerate. I read about the brakes failing. . . But it really feels like it is accelerating too. It is very scary when this happens as it feels that you will be thrushed into whatever might be in front of you.
I was stopped at a traffic light. The street was uphill. My 2010 Prius began to roll back, although I was stepping on the brake. This continued for several seconds, while I tried to press hard on the brakes (they were not responsive). Luckily, there was no car behind me, otherwise, a crash would have ensued. Road conditions were wet and somewhat slippery at that time. This was my first experience with this brake failure, which lasted for a few seconds. I have not had a chance to contact the dealer yet.
