Cruise Control problems of the 2010 Toyota Prius

32 problems related to cruise control have been reported for the 2010 Toyota Prius. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 06/22/2018

On two occasions, June 22, 2018 and August 15, 2018 this vehicle suddenly accelerated while using cruise control and traveling at speed on generally flat, straight, 4 lane road in good weather. I have attached documents with summaries of each event and maps showing route and terrain during the events. Hard braking slowed but did not stop the vehicle either time. Both times, after traveling some distance while braking but continuing to accelerate without my foot on the accelerator, the vehicle made a thunking noise felt through the floor of the car and suddenly stopped accelerating. In the first incident this was after about 2 miles, the second time after about a mile. After each incident I phoned the local dealership and was told that if they could replicate the event they might be able to figure it out. I reported the events to corporate Toyota and an investigation was opened. The vehicle was taken to fred anderson Toyota of asheville where they spent several days with the car, interacting with Toyota, who was asking them to explore and test various things related to the dual pedal fail safe, the computer, snapshots of events on the computer etc. Their final judgement was that floor mats may have interfered, though it was the first thing I checked when I regained control of the car.

2 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2017

I change the brake booster twice and hace the same problem. My brake pedal loss of braking ability or slipping brakes and the warning brake, abs and traction light permanently on, and no cruise control works at all.

3 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2014

While returning from work at 5:30 pm, 02/18/14 on highway 90 west to albany, NY, with cruise control set to 50 mph, the accelerator pedal got stuck on my 2010 Toyota Prius. The pedal did not return back to its original position even when I turned off cruise control. I spontaneously tapped the accelerator pedal in the hope of releasing but did not yield any results and the vehicle maintained its speed. Applying brakes made no effect and did not curtail the car. It continued to move with almost the same speed even when brake pedal depressed. I had no control on my car in one of busiest freeways. I continuously applied the brakes and tried to merge to the right most lane with hazard blinkers on. It took more than 5 miles panic ride trying to avoid trucks and other cars to merge to the right lane. Even with the brake fully depressed, the 2010 Prius did not slow down and I managed to reach the shoulder lane which had gravel & snow. Then I pressed park button and switched off the engine by pressing the power button. I could feel the wheels lock up but the Prius continued to move with strong rubber burning smell. Finally, I engaged the parking breaks to stop it from moving into the freeway. After complete stop, with difficulty I manually pulled up the accelerator pedal. This entire ordeal was shocking and an unbelievable narrow escape from a major catastrophic event. I thanked god & called 911 and the highway patrol police came to the spot and promptly helped to move the vehicle and myself from the freeway traffic. The 2010 Toyota Prius was moved to Toyota dealer service center where I purchased the car & performed every scheduled maintenance service punctually. Incidentally the last service and certification was in 12/2013. It is obvious that even regular dealer maintenance service and certification did not help this vehicle. Report filed with Toyota motor customer service.

4 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2012

Traveling on parkway when we were approaching a vehicle going south down at approximately 55 we were traveling 72 with cruise control engaged, I tapped the brakes to try and slow and nothing happened I then held the brake pedal down for more than 15 seconds with no success, tried to disengage the cruise by pulling back on the handle on the steering wheel and still it would not disengage, we struck the truck at 72 mph only because we had no where else to go and the vehicle would not disengage cruise. The cruise control light was still illuminated after the vehicle came to rest after impact and the vehicle brakes still did not appear to function, this vehicle was a Toyota lease and was told multiple times by Toyota that the issues was recalled by Toyota and that this vehicle had the recall performed.

5 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2011

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Prius. While driving approximately 71 mph with the cruise control activated the vehicle began to accelerate and decelerate on its own. The cruise control light illuminated and began to flash on the instrument panel erratically. The vehicle had a dynamic radar cruise control feature which recognized when there was a vehicle in close proximity and was also illuminated; however, there was not a vehicle within close proximity. The contact depressed the brake pedal but the vehicle would not stop until the cruise control was manually deactivated. The contact had not used the cruise control feature since the failure occurred. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 18,250.

6 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2011

2010 Prius 4 dr hatchback the speed control on my Prius uses radar to speed up and slow down. If I come up on a car doing 45 mph and I'm at 55, the vehicle slows down. When I turn to the other traffic lane, and the lane is clear the car accelerates rapidly. On a number of occasions I have braked to disengage the cruise control, I fell like I don't have control of the car. The fix: adjust the computer so speed acceleration is slower. I think it is a crash hazard.

7 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 02/23/2011

Tl-the contact owns a 2010 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the adaptive cruise control feature would unexpectedly malfunction and force the brakes to engage. The contact stated that if the vehicle traveling in front of him were to turn to the left or right, his brakes would suddenly engage. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, where the contact was informed that the vehicle was operating to specifications. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 10,000. Kmj.

8 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 12/13/2010

The dynamic radar cruise control system suddenly applies brakes while, or soon after, passing a large truck (18 wheeler). Happens rarely. But when it does happen, it is always while, or soon after, slowly passing a larger truck on an interstate and traveling about 70 mph. When it does occur, it normally occurs when the front of the Prius is slightly behind the front of the truck (in the immediate lane to my right) where the truck should be outside the range of the radar. The last time, though, the Prius was well in front of the truck, there was no vehicle in front of me. And, yes, there was no dirt, snow, etc. On the front of the car that might affect the operation of the radar.

9 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2010

The cruise control disengage mechanism in my 2010 Toyota Prius does not disengage quickly enough when depressing the brake. I have to press the brake harder than any prior vehicles I have owned to kill the cruise control and if I release the brake before the cruise control is released then the car lurches forward. This is a safety issue with this vehicle and I called Toyota and they said that there is no safety issue and would not speak to me further about it without going to the dealer. The dealer had already told me that it is operating normally and that this is how the 2010 new Prius model year operates. I have a 2006 Prius as well and the cruise disengages normally. Many other people have experienced this issue and have documented their experiences on the forum Priuschat. Com . They have even fixed the problem themselves by moving the cruise control disengagement closer to the top of the brake pedal. Others have reported that they can depress their brakes and slow down the vehicle without their brake lights coming on and this is the same problem because the brake lights and cruise control kill switch are linked together.

10 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2010

While driving on I-430 in west little rock yesterday, I had the cruise control set on 65 mph. As I approached slower traffic ahead, I slowed the car to 60mph using the brakes. I assumed that the cruise control on my car had automatically disengaged at this point and I let off the brakes. The cruise control then caused the car to accelerate back up to 65mph as it never disengaged by using the brakes. This was especially dangerous since it happened near the crest of a hill and caused my vehicle to no longer be at a safe following distance behind the slower car in front of me.

11 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2010

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Prius. The contact was driving approximately 65 mph with the cruise control activated. There was pressure applied to the brake pedal with a sudden increase of acceleration up to 70 mph. The failure occurred on one occasion. The failure mileage was 13,364. The current mileage was 13,647.

12 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2010

There are several problems I've experienced with the 2010 Toyota Prius purchased new 10 December 2009. 1. When using cruise control: ~ theres regularly what feels like an engine surge when the foot brake is applied to turn off cruise control. This happens regularly, including on smooth, level, dry roadways and freeways and at speed settings from 45 to 60 mph. Because of concern about this I now manually turn off cruise control. Three days ago the car was test driven by a Toyota dealership service department employee, who reported using cruise control 6 times and turning cruise control off by applying the foot brake; the report was cruise control shut off immediately when enough pressure applied [emphasis added] to pedal. ¿ ~ on Saturday, February 27, 2010 after the car had been set at 60 in cruise control for some time there was a strong odor (like a car being driven with the "hand" brake on, but my cars wasn't engaged) while on a dry freeway downgrade (gradual, not steep). I turned off the cruise control, continued at the same speed and the odor stopped. This was the first such occurrence. I've used cruise control regularly because of usually driving on freeways 6 days/week. The Toyota service departments test drive three days ago reported not evident. ¿ 2. Shifting from park to drive several times this shifting was successful only after multiple tries. On one recent occasion after several tries and also turning the car off, on again, and then unsuccessfully retrying, I resorted to using the safety connect sos button. There were no doors ajar and no indication of the cause. While talking with the person who responded I periodically continued to try shifting from park to drive; after several attempts the car responded.

13 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2010

I was driving my 2010 Toyota Prius using cruise control on a highway. I disengaged cruise control to slow down as a vehicle entered the highway in front of me. Once the second vehicle had accelerated ahead, I re-engaged cruise control at my desired speed. The cruise control engaged, but continued acceleration, as if I was activating the cruise control mechanism's accelerate "paddle", which I was not actually doing. I immediately dis-engaged cruise control, slowed to my desired speed, and re-engaged cruise control. At this point, the cruise control resumed proper operation and I was able to drive at my selected speed.

14 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

Sudden, unintended acceleration--2010 Prius on freeway, accelerated with gas pedal to 75. Put on cruise control. Several seconds later, car surged forward, hard and sudden acceleration. First time happened--three days ago, not driven since. Have done nothing yet .

15 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2010

I have a 2010 Prius. We have had the problem with the brakes when we go over a bump. In addition, if I am driving in cruise control and have to put my foot on the brakes, there is a brief feeling of acceleration so instead I have gotten used to turning off the cruise control before putting my foot on the brakes thereby delaying braking for a brief moment.

16 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 01/26/2010

I own a 2010 Prius and took the car into the local Toyota dealer 2 days ago for the initial 5,000 mile check up to discuss a couple issues I have found with the car. I have experienced on 3 occasions a feeling of brake failure. This has occurred when I am driving over rough road. While the brake is being applied if I hit bumps, the brake pedal drops and I lose the brakes. I have immediately let up on the brake and then reapplied pressure to the brake pedal to get braking back. The dealer tried to achieve the same problem but was unable to replicate it. He said it was just the way the pedal must feel to me. Our daughters both have 2006 Prius' which I have driven and never experienced this problem with their car brakes. The second problem is with cruise control. Again, I have driven a 2006 Prius and used cruise control and not experienced the following in the 06 model that occurs in our 2010 model. The car started to accelerate in cruise mode. We have also found it takes a lot of pressure on the brake pedal to take it out of cruise control. The car jerks when tapping the brake pedal lightly to take off cruise control. The dealer again took it out for a test drive and said this is the way the Prius feels. I know driving the 2006 model it was not the way the Prius feels when you take it out of cruise control.

17 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2010

The cruise control on my 2010 Toyota Prius does not always cancel while braking. This has resulted in unintended acceleration after braking while the cruise control has been set. A driver expects that the cruise control will automatically cancel while applying the brakes but this does not happen under light braking. This is even more pronounced while driving up a steep hill. On January 11th, 2010, I was in a situation where I actually applied the brakes to reduce my speed while traveling up a steep hill and felt the car "fighting" against me to maintain a steady speed. After I had slowed my Prius to match the speed of the car in front of me, the cruise control unexpectedly caused the car to accelerate again, placing me at a less than safe distance to the car in front of me as we crested the hill.

18 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2010

Using cruise control feature, when I hit the brake for split second the car speeds up before disengaging cruise control this happen all the time not on just the date below.

19 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 12/23/2009

In my 2010 Prius, the vehicle randomly accelerates when the cruise control is disengaged. This happens every 10th or 15th time of disengagement. When the brakes are applied harder the vehicle slows properly. The unexpected acceleration is very dangerous in traffic. The vehicle has been checked by the dealer and I was told that nothing is wrong. I called for a second time and was told the problem is not on the recall list. I will take it in anyway next week.

20 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2009

My 2010 Prius was delivered on December 17, I took it on two long road trips and used my cruise control on both trips. On both trips with cruise control on there was a surge of acceleration. Nothing stuck and when I applied the brakes the cruise control cut off and the car slowed. I have experienced this one other time and again it was interstate driving with cruise control on.

21 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2009

Bought a 2010 Prius in October 2009. It currently has 3500 miles on it. At least three times the car felt as if it slipped on ice when applying the brakes (weather conditions were perfect - no ice, snow or rain). Their is difficulty in clearing fog from the windows and one time I had trouble setting the cruise control.

22 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2009

2010 Toyota Prius, purchased Nov. 2009. Using cruise control, the car accelerated quickly on it's own when I attempted to change speed by using the cruise control lever on the steering wheel. Happened twice, then I stopped experimenting for reasons of safety. The problem is identical to the one described by steve wosniak in public two weeks ago--one that got a lot of press. Acceleration stopped when brake pedal was tapped or cruise control was turned off.

23 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2009

This problem has existed since the vehicle was purchased. Cruise control either does not function at all or fails to function correctly. Sometimes the cruise control will not engage. Sometimes the cruise control will engage properly, but after applying the brakes (and disengaging the cruise control) the cruise control cannot be reengaged. Two operations will cause the cruise control to begin functioning properly again: 1) turn the vehicle off; 2) put the shift lever into the neutral position, then back into drive. Returned vehicle to dealer three times for repair. They did not fix the malfunction during any of the three repair visits. Their final response was to claim that the vehicle was "functioning as designed".

24 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2009

2010 Toyota Prius, I pick up the car at the dealer on 20 Nov 2009. When ever I set the cruise control it works fine until I tap the brake to turn it off. The car speeds up. I have to press harder on the broke to get the cruise control to disengage and slow down. Its as if the cruise control is not sensing that the brake was depressed and releasing. I took the car back to the dealer on 12-20-2009 having driven it a month and having a chance to get a feel for the car. They said nothing was wrong that all the cars did this. Every car I have owned has had cruise control on it and has never acted this way. I also drive a rx350 Lexus that does not have his problem.

25 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2009

While driving with cruise control engaged and a situation occurs that requires braking; normal brake pedal pressure does nothing. I have to hit the brakes extra hard which significantly slows reaction time. This problem occurs randomly. When I took the car to the dealer I could not get the problem to repeat.

26 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2009

2010 Toyota Prius cruise control caused unintended acceleration when re-engaged. After disengaging cruise control set to 65 and coasting at 50 for a while when the cruise control was re-engaged the vehicle resumed in excess of 70 mph before I disabled cruise control. Date of incident is approximate. I didn't think much of the failure at the time other than that the cruise control was behaving oddly (I have avoided cruise control on this car since). In light of the current investigation I thought I would submit a report.

27 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2009

The brakes on my 2010 Toyota Prius at times do not engage immediately. It may be necessary at those times to depress the brake pedal by 1/3rd before braking begins. There is a similar delay when braking is used to turn off cruise control. Neither of these have caused an accident, but in both cases there is some risk.

28 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2009

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Prius. While driving over large and small speed bumps the vehicle accelerated without warning. As a consequence his risk for serious injury and crash were increased. He is in the process of having the vehicle inspected to determine the cause of the failure. The failure and current mileages were 1,000. Updated 09/14/09 the consumer stated on 6 separate occasions , with 2 different drivers, sudden, brief and unexplained engine acceleration was experienced when a bump was hit in the road while applying the brakes. The driver could hear the engine rev up and there was a surge of power from the engine despite his foot not being on the accelerator, but being on the brake. In each of the 6 incidents the consumer and second driver were able to stop safely, bit were put at risk of an accident and/or injury due to the erroneous acceleration. Updated 09. 15. 09. Updated 10/13/09. The consumer stated the cruise control was not engaged and it didn't feel like the anti-lock brakes engaged either. Updated 10/13/09 the consumer also experienced braking problems as well. The consumer stated the problem has greatly diminished. Updated 02/05/10.

29 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2009

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) February 15, 2010 at 3:29 pm I spoke to [xxx] at Toyota 1-800-331-4331 about problems I've experienced with my 2010 Prius. I told her about the cruise control danger, where the car had been going along nicely on cruise, but suddenly rapidly accelerated when, on August 11, 2009, I was on the trip between new jersey and illinois coming through the tennessee/kentucky area. I had been traveling at about 65mph on cruise and it rapidly accelerated to over 80mph and I panicked while trying to get it to slow down. I tried slowing it down using the cruise button, then depressed the cruise off button. Didn't work. It did not respond immediately to the brake until I braked really hard. Therefore, my driving it was severely limited to driving at very low speeds in town. Other unintended acceleration has occurred even when not using the cruise. The car bolted forward numerous times on a bumpy section of road on my route home from work; it happened often enough there that I compensated by taking a different route. Efforts to stop the forward lunge included braking with no response, using the knob to shift to a different setting, and scrambling to find the damn button to press park. Something finally stopped it, but I dont know what. The next scare occurred after it snowed. I drove slowly on the plowed road, but when the car encountered snowy lumps it rapidly accelerated lunging forward again. My attempts to stop caused me to skid dangerously into oncoming traffic lane. I parked the car in the garage and have not driven it again in well over a month due to the danger. In February, my CO-worker[xxx] urged me not to drive the car because she had heard about a recall and was afraid for me, but I had already parked it by then knowing something was wrong with it. It has not been driven since prior to my learning that others have had similar experiences some have died or been injured as a result.

30 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2009

I have experienced two problems with my 2010 Prius v that I purchased last summer. First, on approximately 6-8 occasions, my car has not stopped immediately when I applied the brakes. This occurred 3-4 times when I approached a stop sign on a road between my home and church. The surface of the road approaching the stop sign had been scraped and roughened to get ready for re-paving. As I approached and applied the brakes, my car surged forward for about a second, but I was able to stop. This happened 3-4 times in other locations, as well. It is an incredibly strange and helpless sensation. This problem was probably noted between late August 2009 and last occurred about three weeks ago. Even though I was forced to put an exact date in the field below, I have no idea now when the exact dates were in which this braking issue occurred. When I brought my car to the dealer for its first oil change, I described what had happened but was told this had nothing to do with the other problems that had been identified in the media as to other cars. The person at the service desk just kind of ignored my comments and was not interested in hearing about the braking issue further. The second problem I have experienced is that when using the cruise control accelerate function the car just continued accelerating even though I was no longer turning the cruise function lever. This stopped when I applied my brakes. It did cause me to stop using the cruise control during that trip though. The cruise control issue probably occurred last August in I-5.

31 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2009

My 2010 Prius has had these problems, which are not being addressed by Toyota. 1)gas pedal stopped working at all on two occasions going 20-30 miles an hour. Had to pull over, turn car off, restart it. Then it worked. Hasn't happened again. 2)cruise control is very difficult to stop with brake. This is consistent. I have stopped using the cruise control because it has almost caused me to rear end another vehicle on several occasions.

32 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 01/01/1901

S10 appropriate handling re 2010 Toyota Prius safety complaints. The consumer stated the cruise control does not immediately cancel, controlling the throttle under light braking. This allowed the vehicle to accelerate up a hill while the consumer was simultaneously applying the brakes. The brake lights did not come on under light braking and the brakes did not work when braking over rough surfaces such as railroad tracks.
