Failure Date: 02/21/2016

My Prius suddenly accelerated today. My wife was not in an accident. My VIN is jtdkn3du7a0205812. I spoke with my wife and the incident occurred up a hill when she was parking (deaccelerating), she didn't notice that the floor mat was not stuck at the time and there was no warning of a problem. Also, this has not happened before. Vehicle was going up a hill on a city street, no ice, going strait, no damage to the car, unknown to what failed.

4 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2012

While carefully parking my Prius 2010 at a hospital it accelerated suddenly and crashed over the cement curb. I say carefully because my Prius had done this before but not enough damage was done to file with insurance. There followed another accident and another accident. Then this evening while driving into my carport my Prius accelerated again. It threw my dog that was in the front seat to the floor but I was able to avoid car damage as I was going to stop. I was barely moving, that is I still had my foot on the accelerator, maybe I could say coasting, when this acceleration suddenly occurred. This was the same type acceleration that caused all the prior accidents. I have reported this to Toyota. . . And now you. Hopefully you will help me. My Prius is in the carport. It has not been moved. However, it is my only transportation. My Prius' latest happening, before the one just stated, the hybrid system quit working during rush hour traffic on the interstate near a busy intersection. This was repaired before Toyota sent some one to investigate the prior accidents. If more information is needed just let me know. This Prius also had a battery replaced shortly after it was purchased as a new vehicle. This Prius has wheel rim scratches.

5 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2012

The unintended acceleration accident happened on 7/18/2012, ~6:20 pm at company's parking lot. I backed my 2010 Prius slowly. Then I saw a car coming on my way. But before I took any action, this Prius suddenly started accelerating, it went wildly, and turned more than 360 degree backward in the parking lot in just a few seconds. Since the car parked between a building and a slop, from the front mirror, first, I saw the building wall and glasses, then I saw the slope, then I saw a car parked close to my car: no! don't hit that car! that is the last thing I remember. Because of the fast turning of the car and because I was so terribly scared, I lost conscious after that until the Prius hit the truck and bounced back and stopped by itself. After a few seconds, I woke up and realized: I am still alive. I got off the car and saw Prius passed the two curbs and hit the truck. The two tires on the driver side got flat because they passed the curb very fast. I was so scared that I couldn't recall of anything for a few days until weekend. Why did the car lose control? one may argue that I stepped on the accelerator. This could happen to new drivers, but not to me because I have been driving for so many years and always a good driver. Many times I saw a car on my way when I was backing, I always stopped right away. And I was healthy in a normal day in normal mode, alert as usual. Why would I step on accelerator when backing? even if I mis-stepped on the accelerator, I can always switch to brake right away. But I could?t do anything about the car on the day. It was out of control completely. After I lost conscious, my hands were off the steering wheel and my foot didn't step on anything, the car didn't slow down but still moved fast and passed two curbs easily. Such a manipulation can only be done when the car is in acceleration, and by itself. Please investigate it ASAP!.

8 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2011

On multiple occasions, I have experienced issues with the car suddenly accelerating while I'm pressing the brakes. Specifically, this appears to occur when braking on uneven surfaces (ie construction areas, pot holes, etc. ). This can obviously become a deadly situation if one is trying to stop the vehicle and with this problem run into the car/vehicle ahead. Most recently this occurred on the surface streets in low speed, in traffic. It feels like the car lurches ahead while applying the brake. I was told by the service people at Toyota that I was making this up. I can recreate it given the right surface.

12 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2010

We were backing down our driveway in our 2009 Toyota Prius. As we approached the street our car suddenly made a loud whining noise and started accelerating backwards. Before we could do anything, we backed into the car parked across from our driveway. After we collected ourselves, we decided to move the car out of the street into our driveway. The sudden acceleration happened again, but this time my husband reached over and hit the park button and we stopped before we hit anything. I have driven our other two cars down our long driveway since, and we only use the accelerator to start the car moving. After that, we are braking all the way down the drive. The acceleration occurred near the street where we pause to check on the traffic. Now that I have checked myself with our other cars, I am sure I did not have my foot on the accelerator pedal at the bottom of the drive, as I brake all the way down. Our Prius is over at the dealer, and we have filed a complaint with Toyota. We are afraid of the car. We did have the car fixed at the recall.

13 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2010

Case of sudden unintended acceleration in a new 2010 Toyota Prius: I was parking my car in a pull-in parking spot in an office building parking lot. While straightening the car out in the spot, it suddenly accelerated out of control and jumped a curb in front of landscaped shrubbery. A large woody bush, and soft dirt stopped the vehicle. No one else was involved in the accident. The car has only 2200 miles on it. The car is currently being held by the dealer, Toyota scion of eatontown, NJ.

14 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2010

New 2010 Prius ll commuter car suddenly accelerates or scoots when both feet are on the brake. The vehicle takes the same route to and from work daily. On every trip, when the right front wheel passes over a recessed manhole, the vehicle accelerates. I immediately push harder on the brake to stop the vehicle. The manhole is about 30 feet in front of an intersection, so I am already decelerating and braking when I cross over the manhole. This is scary because, if I the car doesn't stop, it will take me out into the middle of the intersection. Both feet are on the brake. I have driven for over 40 years, and this the strangest thing I have ever experienced.

15 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2010

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Prius. When the contact shifted into drive gear, the vehicle suddenly accelerated in reverse. The brakes were applied but did not stop the vehicle, the contact pushed the power button which turned off the vehicle and stopped the acceleration. The vehicle was taken to the dealership where NHTSA recall# 10v039000 service brakes, air antilock control unit/module was performed on the vehicle. The contact was concerned that the defect was electrical or a defect in the computer. The approximate current and failure mileages were 5,300.

16 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 03/17/2010

I have been having two issues with the 2010 Prius since I bought it on 29th Dec 2009. 1. Unable to stop and sudden acceleration when hitting rough /uneven road condition and trying to stop and control the vehicle. 2. Unable to stop some times when drive at city speed limit and going between slow and stop and slow and fast and slow kind of driving, sometime when pressing brake, instead of decelerating it start to accelerate and takes longer to stop. I have already been to Toyota dealership 3 times over this issue. First time they fixed brake issue. Second time it was recall that they told will fix the problem I am having. 3rd time they said they can reproduce the problem. But I know I feel the issue sometime. And I can not just leave the car with them for days to investigate and I can change my driving pattern or behavior either for this car.

17 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2010

The contact owned a 2010 Toyota Prius. The contact was braking from 2 mph when the vehicle abnormally accelerated. The contact was unable to stop the acceleration as the vehicle crashed into the asphalt of a driveway. The contact sustained moderate injuries. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer. The manufacturer sent an investigator to further inspect the failure. The investigator stated that the brake and accelerator pedals were depressed simultaneously, causing the failure. The contact was advised there were no failures found in the vehicle. The contact refused to drive the vehicle and purchased a new vehicle. The current and failure mileages were approximately 1,700. Updated 11/19/10. The consumer stated she had no control of the vehicle, it just suddenly accelerated on its own. The vehicle jumped over a curb bordering the parking lot, then over a drainage depress/grass median through a sizeable shrub edge. The vehicle then slammed into a concrete sidewalk and down to the street curb, finally stopping with the motor off and having blown two tires. Updated 12/01/jb.

18 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2010

When braking, all of a sudden the car lurches for a second or so, as if on ice. This happened 3 times in different circumstances, once not related to a pothole. Toyota dealer in avon CT applied the correction to the software, and the next week (last week) the same thing happened again, when I hit a wide, but not deep pothole while braking, just before stopping at the end of a highway exit ramp. In this situation, it was fortunate that no car was in front of me at the light. Additionally I had a problem with sudden acceleration a couple times when driving at slow speed.

19 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2010

Sudden acceleration or surge while going over a pothole or bump.

20 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2010

I own a 2010 Toyota Prius. . Purchased in August 2009. . . Currently going for 15k miles on the odometer. I want to report issues with sudden acceleration even when I am stepping on the brake. I noticed every time I pass thru uneven road, for example potholes, icy roads, snow. The most common issue I have is as I am going down the road and car hits a pothole or manhole (those with metal covers) the car will suddenly accelerate, although I am stepping on the brake. Sometimes I am afraid I will hit the car in front of me, especially when im in traffic. Even going at 5-15 mph, the car will accelerate when it hits uneven road like pot holes or icy roads. This has happen quite a few times since I purchased the vehicle. Just yesterday, we had about 1-2 inches of snow. I was driving slow and when making a left turn, the car hit some uneven road and snow and accelerated when I was stepping on the brake to make the turn. The car went up the sidewalk and the bumper cracked as it hit the concrete edge that separates the road and the sidewalk. No one was hurt and no property damage was done. The car is working fine, but this sudden acceleration issue is a major concern, especially now that I read and hear in the news that 2010 Toyota Prius are being reported with complaints of sudden acceleration. I thought my issue was an isolated case. Please take this complaint into account. I will be going to the dealership this weekend for the 15k scheduled maintenance and will report the issue to them.

21 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2010

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Prius. While driving in reverse out of the garage he experienced an unintended acceleration at least three times within a month. Also when he was driving at 5 mph and coming to a stop, the vehicle lunged forward and as he jammed his foot harder on the brakes, the vehicle kept going . The vehicle was taken to the dealer on two occasions; however, during a test drive they were unable to duplicate, diagnose or repair the failure. The Toyota manufacturer has not been called. The failure mileage was 1,700.

22 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 01/26/2010

2010 Toyota Prius spontaneous acceleration while braking over bumps, pot holes and slick roadways.

23 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2010

2010 Prius. This has happened about 10 times now. Sometimes when I brake, I experience a sudden acceleration. It ranges from slight to a lurch. When it first happened, I thought it was something on the road and ignored it. When it was more pronounced and happened a couple of more times, I brought it to the dealer. They said they had no other reports and could not replicate it. The service manager took me on a test drive and the car was fine. I knew this would happen as the acceleration is only occasional. I was advised to call Toyota national, which I did, and was told that since this could not be replicated that there was nothing they could do and no recourse I had as the complaint could not be replicated. It has happened several times since, so I have paid close attention, as my heart has been racing, to the conditions. It has happened when I am braking while going over manholes, speed strips, cracks in the pavement. It feels like the tire is getting hung up slightly, doesn't get any traction. The brake malfunction light comes on. Also, on the multi-information display, the indicator has just moved from eco to chg. The other day, it was 34 degrees and I was braking as I came up to a light and the car slid and vibrated. I was going about 5 miles an hour. There may have been some black ice or frost on the ground, but the shaking was intense and I had difficulty controlling the car for a few seconds until I stopped.

24 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2010

There have been several times when the brakes of my 2010 Toyota Prius have released, often when I hit a bump or am going over a hill. The car feels as if it's suddenly accelerating even though I am pushing down on the brakes. This has happened at least 4 - 5 times per week since I bought my car in July 2009. Today, I was unable to stop as I approach an intersection despite pushing down on the brakes. The car hesitated and finally the brakes engaged. Luckily no one was coming through the intersection for if there had been, I surely would have hit them.

25 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2010

I own a 2010 Toyota Prius. At least 10 times, when passing over a bump or pothole in the road, the car accelerates without my applying any pressure to the gas pedal. That is, it accelerates without warning sometimes when I pass over a bump or pothole. Then, when I try to slow it down from this unwanted acceleration, the brakes do not seem to function properly. That is, the brakes do not seem to properly and instantly "catch" to slow the car. Rather, there is a pulsating sensation for an estimated 2-5 seconds until the brakes finally and completely "catch" to slow the car from the unwanted and unintended acceleration. I noticed this shortly after buying the car on August 11, 2009. Further, I have never experienced this phenomenon with any other automobile that I have driven in the last 30 years. It is not some phenomenon or problem that has developed over time. Rather, it was a phenomenon that occurred when the car was almost completely new with far less than 1,000 miles on the odometer. I am making this complaint after reading in an internet news article that others are experiencing similar problems with the 2010 Toyota Prius as well as the other recalled Toyota automobiles. I believe this is a potentially dangerous problem, and swift u. S. Government action is both warranted and needed for public safety.

26 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2010

I own a 2010 Prius purchased around sept. 2009. A few weeks after we got the vehicle, my wife and I independently both experienced a sudden acceleration when the car went over a bump. This has occurred about a total of 4 times. My foot was not on the accelerator at the time this occurred. Stepping on the brake did slow the vehicle down. The last time I experienced this was 2-3 weeks ago. I did ask the dealer shortly after the initial incident if he had heard of this problem and he said no. I have not since brought the car back to the dealer. We have noticed this only when the car goes over a bump.

27 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2010

Tl * the contact owns a 2010 Toyota Prius. The first time she experienced sudden acceleration was on January 15, 2010. While stopped at the red light with her foot on the brake the vehicle suddenly accelerated. She put the gear in neutral and the vehicle stopped, as soon she took the gear out of neutral the vehicle accelerated again. She experienced the failure five times. She took the vehicle to the dealer February 13 2010 the dealer replaced accelerator pedal and reset the accelerator computerized system. And on March 18, 2010 she experienced the failure again while stopped at the red light the vehicle continued to accelerate. The contact stated she will take the vehicle back to the dealer. The current failure mileage was 2,000 and the current mileage was 4,200.

28 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2010

Sudden acceleration when passing over rough spots(has happened with manhole cover). Braking stops the acceleration.

29 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2010

When the road surface is slippery and/or uneven (I. E, pothole is beginning to form), my 2010 Toyota Prius has "surged" or accelerated suddenly at low speeds under 30 mph, for no apparent reason other than coming into contact with the bumpy/slick road surface. This sudden acceleration responds to braking and has occurred approximately 5-8 times, with more frequency since the rainy weather began. This is frightening for a few brief seconds, especially in heavy traffic. As a consequence, I try to avoid uneven road surfaces but in heavy rain conditions when the road is covered with water, pot holes and brakes in the blacktop are not as easily visible and once I swerved to miss it by moving into the next lane a little bit and a big truck was merging into the same lane at the same time and blew his horn so hard it scared me even more so that I swerved back into my lane, nearly causing an accident. I plan to contact my dealer today about this acceleration defect.

30 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2009

I have experienced a sudden acceleration type problem when driving over rough pavement and potholes, etc. The acceleration is for a split second and I suspect it may be related to the lack of traction from the tires. It does not appear to have anything to do with loose floor mats or a sticking pedal. No repairs have been made. Dealer said they never heard of the problem when I went in last week. I was offered to have it brought into service depart. It does not happen on command so I am going to wait for NHTSA investigation.

31 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2009

I purchased a 2010 Toyota Prius in August, 2009. During the fall, 2009, I experienced two incidents, which in retrospect, I think involved sudden acceleration. On both occasions, I was driving home from work and went over a spot on the road which, because it was dark, I couldnt see for sure, but which felt like a pot hole. (I also think it may have been raining on both of these occasions, although I cant recall for sure). Immediately after hitting what I think was a pot hole, I felt the car suddenly and dramatically accelerate. Both times I applied the brakes and the car stopped accelerating. At the time, it did not occur to me what was going on. But, now thinking about it, I think it likely that the sudden jolt to the car, perhaps combined with moisture, caused some type of electrical malfunction, which thankfully, was short-lived (or at least stopped by braking). Shortly after these incidents, I mentioned them to my wife. She reported that she had experienced very much the same thing on a separate (I. E. , a third occasion) driving our Prius.

32 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2009

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Prius. While driving 10 mph over railroad tracks, with her foot off of the accelerator pedal, she noticed that the vehicle suddenly began to accelerate without driver intent. She immediately depressed the brake pedal and the vehicle momentarily decreased in speed, however the vehicle soon began to accelerate again. She then put the vehicle in neutral and shut the engine off. She was able to stop the vehicle and within a few minutes, restarted the engine. The vehicle began to function normal. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was test driven. The dealer found nothing wrong with the vehicle and could not duplicate the failure. The contact stated that she had experienced the unintended acceleration over 12 times. There were no repairs made to the vehicle. The failure mileage was 4,000 and the current mileage was 8,352.

33 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2009

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that the vehicle suddenly accelerated and crashed into and through a garage; the air bags did not deploy. The contact sustained a bruised heart, broken sternum and two broken ribs. The vehicle was destroyed. The contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance outside of taking a complaint. The failure mileage was approximately 3,400.

34 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2009

I purchased a new 2010 Toyota Prius in September 2009 from darcars Toyota in frederick MD. I have experienced (2) instances of unintended acceleration during the time since I purchased the vehicle. I have informed darcars Toyota and Toyota corporation. Darcars ran a "health test" on February 4, 2009 on my vehicle and the test indicated everything on the vehicle was operating normally. Darcars then contacted their Toyota California (tac) and related my problem to them. The response from Toyota was that my episodes of unintended acceleration was just the abs system engaging normally. This is after the press release from Toyota corporation on the morning of 02/04/10 acknowledging a problem existing with the 2010 Prius but claiming to have already fixed the problem on all new 2010 Prius automobiles sold since January 2010. My two questions are 1) if Toyota discovered a problem with the 2010 Prius that they supposedly repaired on all 2010 Prius vehicles sold since January, why has Toyota not contacted me about what is an obvious safety issue? I have owned and been driving my 2010 Prius since September '09. 2) what is the specific repair that was supposedly performed on all 2010 Prius automobiles since January 1, 2010? why did my Toyota service manager have no knowledge of such a repair? was there a safety bulletin issued by Toyota? why has Toyota not already agreed to repair my 2010 Prius (sold in September '09) with the same repair allegedly already performed on 2010 Prius automobiles sold after January 1, 2010?.

35 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2009

I bought a 2010 Prius in September 2009. In October, I drove over a pothole that was about 6 inches deep and covered the entire width of the lane. Here is what it felt like happened: when the back wheels hit the bottom or the top of the pothole, my car suddenly accelerated and I had a very difficult time stopping it. I managed to not crash into the car in front of me, but just barely. It hasn't happened since. The pothole was apparently the result of work on the road, b/c it was squared, like the pavement had be intentionally cut.
