1 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 09/30/2024

Heading westbound on I-70, taking exit 29 off ramp from highway, I drove over uneven pavement. My traction control, abs and brake lights illuminated, the brakes suddenly felt mushy. As I approached the stoplight at the end of the exit ramp, I questioned whether I would be able to stop. Scared me immensely. Luckily no cars were near me. I now do not have abs, traction control, stability control or regenerative braking.

2 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/23/2024

My car accelerated significantly on its own while I was pulling into a parking stall in a private parking lot. It caused my vehicle to jump a curb and accelerate up a dirt divider and push over a bush that was planted in the dirt divider. Depressing my brakes did not decelerate the car, so I pressed the park button to eventually stop the vehicle. I’m not sure what speed it was traveling when it accelerated, but I could smell burning rubber at the end of the incident. I’m not sure when the smell first occurred.

3 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2024

See all over the internet that 2010 Prius have a recall for inverter. I called the dealer they said no recall with my VIN. I was told that a new inver is almost $5000 dollars. I need help I have bought 3 Toyota already. Please help me with good will or warrenty the inverter like you have so many other people with 2010 Prius. If not I willand my family will never buy a Toyota again. Please call or email me 480 236 7841 josephblakehefner@gmail. Com the Prius died when driving and we almost got in a major accident because it stalled with no warning.

4 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2024

Total malfunction at highway speeds. Very unsafe, the car completely shut off. This may have resulted in a highway fatality due to collision as the vehicle was in the fast lane. Ntsa please do your due diligence and investigate the faulty, defective hybrid system as I believe the faulty inverter recall is much more larger than the original recall.

5 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 09/29/2023

The breaking lights, skid lights and another light associated with breaks came out and I lost the abs abilities, the hv battery is not charging while breaking. These lights comes out randomly. Very risky especially while breaking.

6 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2023

I was driving in my neighboorhood and as I went up the wall bridge my acceleration stalled and my abs light, check engine light, and check hybrid system light came on simultaneously and started beeping. At the same time, I lost my braking ability completely. I had to swerve off to the grass in the hopes of not hitting turning traffic at the stop sign. Luckily, it stopped before doing any major damage to anything. Thankfully, I was close to home and was able to put it in my driveway safely. The check engine light then cut itself off, but my brakes remained completely nonfunctional. If this had happened on the highway or a busy road I'm sure it would’ve been much worse.

7 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2023

The abs, vsc/traction control, and brake system warning lights all came on at the same time in my 2010 Toyota Prius. I almost lost control of my car's braking ability. Afterwards, the hybrid system does not perform its regenerative braking/recharging any longer. And the cruise control mode doesn't work also. The dtc from the obd2 port is c1391 - abnormal leak in the brake fluid accumulator. I found out that this issue is widespread among gen 3 Priuses, but Toyota has not made this officially a recall campaign, but classifies it as a "customer support bulletin. " but the issue is dangerous enough that it should be a recall item. I moved homes in fall of 2018, and Toyota says it mailed out a letter about this brake issue and resulting campaign, but I never received the letter. I was totally unaware that this was a safety issue, that Toyota acknowledged it, and that this safety issue with an ongoing "recall" campaign with an expiration date. Toyota denies that this is a recall issue, and will not provide this service. I would like for NHTSA to reopen and investigate this issue, and make Toyota issue a general recall campaign to resolve this dangerous safety problem with the car.

8 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2022

I was driving my 2010 Toyota Prius and my car started beeping when I was driving when I tried to slow down the car was not able to stop the breaking system abs started displaying and my car started to beep and it won’t stop beeping. I did take my car to the dealer for a recalled inspection after my car broke down and I was no longer able to drive for my own safety. After I took the car to downey Toyota for hybrid recall they didn’t tell me anything but on the document they gave me it did state that the abs was a problem. Now my car is still not able to be used because of my own safety concerns since the vehicle won’t break when I put the brake pedal and a none stop beeping sound that won’t stop at all.

9 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 09/28/2021

The digital speedometer display has stopped working. I can no longer see my speed or fuel gauge. I was quoted nearly $3,000 at the dealer to repair the vehicle.

10 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2021

The dash lights on my 2010 Prius went all dark, lost all information on my dash. No lights on dash, no fuel gauge, no speedometer, nothing. This is very dangerous to suddenly have happened and I don't see a recall from Toyota to address this problem.

11 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2020

Check hybrid system light ignites, slows down vehicle in middle of high speed highway. First incident November of 2020 then several incidents after. Repair shops don't assure problem according to error codes & they recommend possibilities they cannot assure will resolve the problem. Car was taken into local dealership after receiving recall notice for software and airbags prior to November 2020 when the issue began. Software update took a couple of hours. Restart/reboot temporarily allowed driving again. Most recently the system entirely shut down & the car will not start or run. Abandoned car on side of the road and got heat exhaustion from walking the rest of the way home and had vehicle towed. Error lights come on including "check hybrid system" says "shift to p position when starting" and will not allow start.

12 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2020

My car is accelerating while braking. Whenever I try to brake on the road while curbing or stopping at the traffic signals, the car skips/slide forward. It's getting worse on the rainy time though.

13 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2020

Defect within the brake booster pump assembly. If this defect occurs, various warning lamps on the instrument panel made illuminate, I experience increased stopping distance, reduced hydraulic pressure within your brake system, the deactivation of brake assist, and/or the deactivation of vehicle stability control. Toyota has previously issued at least two safety recalls d0h and k0l designed to prevent similar dangerous occurrences. However, hundreds of thousands of generation iii Prius vehicles (2010-2015 model years) were excluded from those safety recalls.

14 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2019

As I was driving on a road, about 25 mph, while my foot was on the accelerator pedal the car just decreased it's speed to a stop as I continually pushed my foot on the pedal.

15 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2019

Car worked flawlessly and we maintained it regularly. Took it in to address recall of jov update pwr mgmt ecu at dealer. Dealer completed recall work. 2 days later engine lite check hybrid system and the ! on and triangle on. The car continued run but now was studdering when was not before the recall work. Took it back to the dealer and he said we need a new hybrid battery. We believe the software update they did created a this issue. Dealer acting ignorant and saying it needs new battery because of number of miles on car. Asked for diagnostic print out from when they did recall work to they new diagnosis and they would not provide. We believe the recall update created a technical problem with our hybrid battery. We also believe that dealer not being honest regarding issues with this recall update and is using it as an opportunity to reduce liability for Toyota on failed recall work and to use it as an opportunity to bring in large ticket sales repair ie they quoted us a new hybrid battery for 5,500.

16 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2018

I have been experiencing the safety risks outlined in the following manufacturer recall number: j1v NHTSA recall number: 18v684 I have been dealing with this issue for the past 2 - 3 years and unknowingly may have been spending hundreds of dollars on repairs that may not have needed to be replaced. Currently, my car is not running as I experienced a stall (11/09/2018) while exiting the freeway at a high speed with the screen reading "check hybrid system" and the dash lit up with the yellow triangle and exclamation point. I am not able to accelerate during the stall, brakes are working. This has happened to me countless times, almost always on the freeway or exiting and while traveling at a high speed. Sometimes the vehicle would start back up after a few minutes of being turned off. This particular time (11/09/2018), I coasted the vehicle to a safe spot and the vehicle engine never turned on again. I towed the vehicle to my residence and then to my mechanic. I am only able to put the vehicle in neutral. The motor will not come on at all and the screen reads "check hybrid system". The car had over 1/4 tank of gas at the time. I currently use my vehicle for my livelihood doing independent delivery services such as instacart, doordash, postmates etc. Since there is yet to be a remedy for this situation I want to know what my options are to get back the money I've spent or compensation for this vehicle since it is not usable and unable to be fixed by the manufacturer in a timely manner. I can provide documentation in regards to repairs made as well as visits to Toyota in which they were unaware of the issue.

17 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2018

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid. While reversing out of the driveway, the contact released the accelerator pedal to switch the vehicle into drive. Suddenly, the vehicle accelerated backwards and drove into a neighbor's yard. The vehicle spun out of control even with the contact standing on the brake pedal. As a result, the vehicle struck the corner of a neighbor's house and finally came to a stop. The contact attempted to turn off the vehicle twice. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot until the insurance company provided further instructions. The contact called the dealer (cumberland Toyota, 1540 interstate dr, cookeville, TN 38501, (931) 272-3719) prior to the crash about a possible recall and was informed that they could not assist until she received a recall letter. There were no injuries and a police report was filed. The manufacturer had not been called. The vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign number: 18v684000 (hybrid propulsion system), but the contact was not sure if it was related to the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 74,000.

18 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/04/2018

Brake actuator has failed. Traction control, abs, brake lights illuminated on dash. More effort needed to engage brakes. This affects the regenerative braking as it no longer charges on braking as it was designed. Checked Toyota website for recalls since this is safety related, and there are none. Which is quite disturbing. I've researched Prius forums and this seems to be an ongoing problem. Toyota issued a recall for the generation 2 model, however this seems to be a problem for generation 3 models as well. The problem did occur when on the highway traveling at 60 mph.

19 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2017

I was driving on the freeway at about 70 mph when the "check hybrid system" light came on and the car lost all power and ability to accelerate. It completely began to descend in speed and within 2 minutes came to a complete shut down. I could have easily been rear ended had I not moved to the side of the freeway as quickly as I did.

20 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2016

I was in a parking structure going approximately 15 mph when I removed my foot from the accelerator to press the brake. Before I could get my foot to the brake, the car quickly accelerated. It took at least two attempts at pushing the brake peddle before the car came to a stop. And, to be honest, the guardrail the car hit helped actually stop the vehicle. It was totally unexpected and extremely scary. In hindsight, I should have suspected that there may be a problem when I noticed that sometimes when applying the brakes to come to a stop there would be a feeling of the brakes slipping and the car lurching forward a bit. The dealership had the car towed in to get checked out, and I have been told that they will notify Toyota. In the meantime I am concerned about the safety of this car!.

21 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2016

On 05/25/2016 at about 9am, while in motion at a rate of speed approx 25 mph on a street during construction (don't know if the bumpy road had anything to do with it), the change oil soon light appeared and seconds later all the lights on the dash came on with the message to check the "check hybrid system" . I tried to stop the vehicle and it kept accelerating. I pressed on the breaks really hard and the traction control light kept flashing on and off like crazy but it barely had any impact. Although the vehicle slowed, it did not come to a full stop. I ended up hitting the vehicle in front of me. Thank god it was a truck and as able to stop the car from moving further or I could of ended up in the middle of an intersection. After the collision, the car would not stop although the park button was pressed and light was on. I even tried turning off the vehicle and the vehicle stayed on and in drive. I ended up in the hospital and don't know how it eventually got turned off but that was very frightening. I had my children in the car. On impact, the seat belts did not even tighten.

22 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2016

Brake booster pump assembly vehicle in motion when on highway when loss of breaking and steering took place. Vehicle lighted icons appeared on dash along with alarm sound. (abs) (!) (brake) (ss). This unsafe condition could have been avoided if NHTSA would have forced Toyota to recall this defective part in 2013 when Toyota notified NHTSA of the defective braking system. Or Toyota mailed notice to customers as stated back in 2013, which prevention could prevent loss of life or harm. Or class action. . Read more...

25 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/22/2014

I was going up the on ramp to I -75 exit 341 in florida when I lost all power steering and braking and the check hybrid system light came on. Cars were coming at me at 70 mph and could have killed my wife and I. This is the second time I have reported the problem of check hybrid system light coming on and losing all power. 26 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2014

I came to a red light and was braking and as it almost came to a complete stop it jerked forward. Thankfully there wasn't a car in front of me otherwise I would of hit it. I'm taking it in soon. I don't drive it everyday and when I do it's less than a mile.

27 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2014

I started noticing a high pitch noise sporadically on my car after it was a few months old. If I stopped and restarted the car, the noise would go away. When I brought it to Toyota they could not reproduce the problem. It would happen about 1-3 times per month and some months not at all. On this particular trip about a month ago, I did not notice the noise on start up (I had a cold that affected my hearing), but did hear it after getting on the highway. There was no where to reasonably pull over and restart teh car safely, so I kept driving. After about 15-30 minutes the speedometer cluster/dash that displays the speed, fuel and drive position went blank and the noise went away. Searching online there were at least a handful of others who either had their speedometer replaced under warranty or otherwise with the same issue. I also found a recall on the 2009, a year earlier, Prius for the same issue and yes the same company makes the part. I brought my car to the dealer ASAP and the dealer wanted to charge me $120 to diagnose. When I questioned them, they said they need to take the dash apart, which is a lie as this would be more expensive as per our conversation. I asked for a quick computer diagnosis and they refused. I then called Toyota who said my car is long out of warranty for this part and that because I didn't pay for a diagnosis they would not take it further. When I pressed on with them they hid behind confidentiality when I asked about others who had this issue and then they said even if I paid for a diagnosis and this was found defective there are no promises. They want ~$1,200 to fix this defect.

28 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/23/2013

I have a 2010 Toyota Prius that really has me concerned. Twice recently when applying the brakes, it has lunged forward and I was forced to punch the brakes very hard with both feet to make it stop. Both times I was on city streets going about 35 mph. It really scared me. Luckily there was nobody in front of me or I would have had an accident. I took it to the dealer to have it checked out and am awaiting the verdict.

29 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2013

Today, 1/21/2013 at approximately 245pm while drive back from disney with my family on the florida turnpike(mile point marker 294 nb) at approximately 65-70 mph our 2010 Prius suddenly lost power and "check hybrid system" came on. Mind you I was traveling on a major road when the car suddenly kept decreasing in speed and I just turned on to the median and the car rolled to a stop. Luckily there was a florida safety patrol behind me who put on his flashing lights until I was safely off the turnpike. Car would not restart and had to be towed. Car arrived at xxx(dealer) Toyota at 502pm and I am awaiting a call back on the problem. This is a safety issue. Also, there was no warning before the car failed. Thank you. This is what I filed with Toyota minus identifying data.

30 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2012

My Prius iv, purchased new in 2010, intermittently had a lunging forward problem when going over speed bumps, pot holes etc. I would have to stop it by braking quickly, so I didn't collide with a car ahead. I informed Toyota of this problem within the first year. They tested it and said they could find nothing. I mentioned this to them on various occasions when I took the car for its periodic maintenance of 5000 mile intervals. On December 26, 2012 I was stopped waiting to go left when I was rear-ended. I went to pull over to the side of the road to assess the damage. When I accelerated to get to the side of the road, the car took off crazily, at a high rate of speed for about 6-7 seconds, zigzagging uncontrollably on the 2 lane road. If there were cars coming toward me, I would have been in a head on crash. I immediately called Toyota service of scranton,PA and asked them to see and assess the car's problem. They made an appointment and concluded. Said there is no problem internally, and suggested removing the after market floormat. I then proceeded to show them the same problems many customers are having with the Prius , including an article by steve wozniak, the CO-founder of apple company, who had acceleration problems with his 2010 Prius. I called the main Toyota headquarters later, explaining the problem and they too said there is no malfunction , only mentioning the floor mats again. . This is not the case as the car has had acceleration problems from the beginning and to further clarify, I was able to finally stop the car. . . The mat was no where near the accelerator. I am afraid to drive this for others' safety, my passengers and my own safety. I take care of my cars faithfully. You can view my records. I am also fearful if I trade this car, someone else might get injured or killed. Can you please check and advise.

31 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2012

When parking, my 2010 Prius accelerated forward causing it to go over a curb form damaging the front bumper. Unexpected acceleration has caused four accidents damaging my car. I have records of these repairs. The hybrid system went out 8/30/2013 and in March,2014 the back brakes fell off: no bolts, pads, caliber, fluid were in place when it was towed to robbins Toyota in texarkana, TX. The front right booster was blown out while in this shop. My vehicle there over a month for various reasons.

32 Vehicle Speed Control problem

33 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/31/2012

I have a 2010 Toyota Prius that really has me concerned. Twice recently when applying the brakes, it has lunged forward and I was forced to punch the brakes very hard with both feet to make it stop. It really scared me. Luckily there was nobody in front of me or I would have had an accident. I took it to the dealer (walker Toyota in miamisburg, OH) to have it checked out. The service department looked back at the computer on the car and saw two instances where the brake and accelerator were pressed at the same time. So now they are trying to tell me it is user error. They said I must have inadvertadly hit the accelerator pedal while I was braking. No I did not!!! I have owned this car for over three years and this has never happened before. Now it has happened twice in the last two months. I don't think so. . . I called Toyota corporate and they advised me to get a second opinion. So now I am taking it to voss Toyota in beavercreek. I also noticed recently that my gas mileage has dropped significantly in the last six months. It's much worse than it's ever been since I have owned it. I'm not sure it it is related or not???.

34 Vehicle Speed Control problem
