1 Brake Loud Noise problem of the 2006 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/20/2020

While vehicle was in motion on a city street, and also upon back roads, the brakes in my 2006 Toyota Prius seemed to grab. There was also a loud noise upon braking. This issue worsened and the dash lights lit up. I took to local Toyota dealership and it was determined that the brake actuator needs to be replaced due to safety issue of brakes going out in the future. (not if but when). I was told when the brakes go out, I am to push the emergency brake and the vehicle would coast to a stop. This is an unsafe condition and could happen while braking for a red light or braking to avoid hitting a deer. The cost to fix this brake actuator issue will be appx $3000. Upon further research, Toyota knew of the issue and offered an extended warranty that expired Dec 2017. There are several other complaints of this same issue with other '06 Prius owners of this happening before and after the warranty expired in Dec of 2017. This is a safety issue which could cause injury or death when the brakes do stop working and needs to be a recall, not an extended warranty through Toyota that expires.

2 Brake Loud Noise problem of the 2015 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/01/2017

Issue started after 2 years, when wet and cold as I back up and put my foot on the brake pedal, a very loud noise heard coming from the back? it lasts as long as I put my foot on the pedal. Expressed my concerns at peterson Toyota dealer locally, but the technician stated that "it's normal", could be the brake hydraulic booster system? the issues still continue as of today. I do record the noise when it happens.

3 Brake Loud Noise problem of the 2015 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/05/2016

I purchased the vehicle new in 2025 and I have been experiencing brake failure issues every time I attempted to brake over either a pothole, a slick surface like a metal sheet at road construction or wet roads the brake would fail. All the red warning signs would come on in the dashboard and the brakes would make that loud horrible noise. I love my Prius, I don't want to get rid of it. I was hoping Toyota motors would have a fixed for the braking system by now as this is very unsafe specially inexperienced drivers. My goal is to pass this car to my teenage daughter when she goes to college in 2021, but this may not be possible if Toyota doesn't to up with a solution to the problem.

4 Brake Loud Noise problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/22/2010

Driving at very slow speed. . . Braking at stop sign behind another car; needed to hit the brakes--not quite "slam on the brakes" --as I realized I was closer to car in front of me than I'd thought. Car in front of me pulled away at the same time (fortunately) as my car lurched forward; I didn't feel it was going to stop; when I then proceeded car made horrible noises. . . Sounded I thought bottom was going to fall out. Have experienced the same "not going to stop" feeling a second time since. What followed? called dealership immediately; they suggested I come in for brake check, which I did following day. Told it was going to cost $125; we discussed likelihood that problem probably wouldn't happen for the mechanic, I decided against spending money for brake check up when service dept. Told me it was "just the way Prius' abs brakes work. " when I asked about the news reports I'd heard about this braking problem they didn't know anything about it, pointed to absence of info on Toyota's website for service departments and said media often blows things out of proportion. Called Toyota corp and case manager that returned call to me had no information about media reports I referred to.

5 Brake Loud Noise problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 05/07/2008

When it is humid and/or raining, the rear brakes of my 2007 Toyota Prius seize up as I come to a stop. Just before a stop (ie at a stop sign or stop light) the brakes will seem to grab really hard in the back and the car will sort of lurch or jerk forward but be abruptly held in place by the rear. There is a loud noise from the back like a rubbing noise when this happens. The car has been to two Toyota dealerships both of which deny that this could be occurring. I insisted that it be looked at and test driven and the mechanic claims there is nothing wrong. This has been going on since I first bought the car in may, 2008. Passengers have witnessed this in the car. It only happens when it is seriously humid (ie on the verge of raining) or when it is raining. . . . Every time I approach a stop, without exception. It's like the rear of the car is suddenly superglued to the road and the body of the car/shell of the car continues with the forward momentum/motion. For the category of problem I checked service brake, hydraulic, because that was the only "brake" option I saw besides parking brake. I have no idea if this is the correct category.
