The car jumps out of gear, or it won't go into park. But it started to drives away after I got out of the car, or as I was getting out. This happen twice, once at the dealer. The display for transmission position was broken. The same display that shows speed, fuel level and other items was not working. Also, I could not shut off the car or remove the key. The first time it happen was 8/19/2015 at a car wash. The display went dead during the wash. Wile trying to fix the problem, the car drove away in reverse and knocked me over. I had minor injuries. I might have some other problems as a result of that accident. The next day I want to the dealer. Without looking at the car (no computer analysis), the service man told me the display and computer was bad. He said it happens a lot. He also quoted me a price of around $700. I went back to my daughter house to look for another dealer and to research the issue. (I was visiting from CA). At her house, I noticed the car would not shut off and I could not get the key out (the dealer rep told me to put the key in the slot). So I just went back to the dealer to have them fix it and pay the price. (it should be noted that the dealer and its employees never gave me the same information and they wanted me to get so frustrated, that I would leave with the car not repaired. They suggested that I take it somewhere else. At one point, they claimed that I told them I was going to take the car away without the repair. I never said that! they did everything they could to make me mad and so would not fix the car). When I went back to the dealers, the car drive away, again in reverse. I had to hop on one leg to keep up and get back in to stop it. In ether case, I could have been killed. No display, can't shut it off and it jumps into gear!! that is a safety issue! life and death issue it is!.

On 20 may 2010 at 11,966 miles every brake/stability warning light came on (including the warning for the parking/emergency brake which was not engaged), regenerative braking appeared to have failed, and hydraulic/friction brakes behaved as if abs was acting at a very slow pulse rate, approximately a 5-second cycle. For about 2 seconds during the "off" portion of this cycle the brakes were effectively inoperative, with the parking/emergency brake the only source of braking. This behavior persisted after shutting down and restarting the car. The dealer's service department reported that three errors had been logged: c1247 - stroke sensor c1300 - abs ecu malfunction c2318 - low voltage error resetting the computers cleared the warning indications and restored normal brake system behavior. At my behest, the dealer worked with Toyota engineering to identify why a low voltage would cause a computer failure which could cause substantial loss of braking ability. They kept the car for 8 days but did not appear to complete any sort of root cause analysis of the failure. On 17 December 2012 at 27,324 miles the brakes again failed with the same set of warning lights illuminated. This time, abs does not appear to be active at all. For the first 2-5 cm of brake pedal travel, in the regime where regenerative braking would be active, no braking is evident. As the pedal is further depressed, the hydraulic/friction brakes abruptly engage. Pressing harder does result in increased braking though braking is rough. No pulsation as might be expected from abs was noticed. No attempt was made to brake hard enough to lock up the brakes. The vehicle is currently at the dealer.

2004 Toyota Prius. Consumer asserts that vehicle accident was caused by a computer malfunction
the consumer stated prior to the accident, on one occasion, the vehicle bolted and jerked slightly as she stopped the vehicle. When she attempted to take off, the vehicle responded sluggishly and then accelerated quickly. The day of the accident, as the consumer approached the stop sign, the vehicle started bucking and jerking violently. After she pulled off from the stop sign, she crashed into a large SUV. The consumer stated she saw the SUV pass, so she purposely waited so she could make a left turn, but ended causing severe damage to her vehicle.

My daughter was driving our 2004 Toyota Prius in fast traffic when there was a complete failure of the computer system and the car shut down. Her life was in danger - but a policeman happened to be passing by and diverted traffic and called a tow truck. The car was taken to morristown Toyota in morristown new jersey where it was determined that there was a computer failure. The computer stayed overnight at the dealer and they said the "refreshed" the computer and that "this should solve the problem. " I am reporting this incident because of the dangereous situation that developed due to a computer failure - ad may fit in with other reports you are receiving.
Have a 2004 Toyota Prius. Less than 40,000 miles on the car. Was driving on the freeway and it suddenly died for no reason. Toyota dealer said it was a computer malfunction and could not guarentee it would not happen again. Very upset about this as it is a new car I paid a lot of money for.
The vehicle intermittently stalled and decelerated while driving 35 mph due to computer failure. The vehicle stalled while on the highway. The service engine soon light had come on before and remained on after the vehicle failed.
Ltr from senator brown on behalf of constituent, re problems with his 2001 Prius. A safety alert was issued for the failure of the main computer, which resulted in the engine shutting itself off. The consumer stated the computer failed on his vehicle after 1 year of service. It took Toyota 18 months to identify the problem. After a costly replacement of the accelerator pedal, the ecm was finally replaced. The consumer discovered a technical service bulletin had been issued regarding the replacement of the ecm. The consumer stated the ecm was defective when it left the factory, however Toyota was not willing to take any responsibility for the repairs, because the car was too old. The power steering had to be replaced twice.
