36 Electrical System problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 06/26/2024

Passenger side low beam headlamp has continued to need to be replaced. I was not made aware of a "customer service protection program" on this and when I contacted Toyota they said it was too late for the repair, electrical harness, to be covered by their extended warranty. I never received information regarding the extended warranty. They stated they sent it to the correct address. But just because you mail something doesn't always mean it is delivered to that address. Also, I had my car serviced many times at Toyota dealerships and they never informed me of this extended warranty. If I had been made aware of the extended warranty I would've had it repaired in a timely manner. I have spoken to two representatives of Toyota and they stated they could not help me. I'm wondering why this is not considered a recall issue as it does affect the safety of driving a vehicle and the lights stop working. This may not be the right place to ask this question but I'm hoping someone in your organization can help me.

38 Electrical System problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 06/20/2024

I was driving and suddenly the car started beeping and the brake, e-brake, abs, and traction control lights came on. As soon as I found an opportunity I tried to brake but the car would not stop and the brake pedal became really hard. I had swerve to avoid hitting cars in front of me. It was the scariest moment of my life. I shifted the car from d to b to use the engine braking. I finally was able to slow down enough to turn right on a side street and pushed on the brake pedal with all my strength and it finally came to a stop. I was lucky I didn't have a collision or strike a pedestrian, that I also drive defensively and leave enough space in front of me, and that I was on a surface street and not on a freeway which I frequently use because if I was I would have surely crashed. This is not right. Brakes should not suddenly fail! under any circumstances. It was confirmed by a mechanic that it's the brake booster and brake booster pump assemblies had failed and had the following codes c1252, c1253, and c1256 were found. The same issue and codes reported in TSB pol18-03.

39 Electrical System problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 06/13/2024

While driving on the highway, abs, "brake"/e-brake, traction control lights lit up all at the same time out of the blue. No prior engine lights/codes before this incident. During that trip, brakes felt more difficult to press, loss all brake regeneration for the hybrid battery but was still about to brake for that entire 100 miles trip. As of now, the car is still able to brake but it looks like it's just primarily using the mechanical brakes all the time now. It still has that different brake feel compared to when before all those engine lights went on. Regenerative braking is no longer working. Brought the car to the shop at was given the error codes c1391 and c2315.

44 Electrical System problem of the 2019 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 04/08/2024

I was idling at a parking space and went to turn off my car. The vehicle surged forward and the brake sign came on. I pushed my brake to the floor and nothing happened. I was moving toward a brick wall so I put in in reverse and the car surged backwards. The brake sign came on and I pushed the brake to the floor and again nothing happened and I ended up hitting the car behind me. I immediately took my car to the dealership where they kept it for 3 days and said they could find nothing wrong and it was safe to drive. I just got it back from having the body work done and am afraid to drive it as this might happen again or worse. I am reporting it to let you know and to see if this has occurred and been reported as happening in this make and model previously. I also have 2 witnesses to what happened.

45 Electrical System problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 04/07/2024

Total malfunction at highway speeds. Very unsafe, the car completely shut off. This may have resulted in a highway fatality due to collision as the vehicle was in the fast lane. Ntsa please do your due diligence and investigate the faulty, defective hybrid system as I believe the faulty inverter recall is much more larger than the original recall.

47 Electrical System problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 03/01/2024

My 2010 Toyota Prius hatchback suddenly had 4 or 5 warning lights appear on the dashboard and my brakes failed to function properly. It felt like the power brakes was turned off ! although I did get the vehicle stopped, it surely was a dangerous situation. I understand that Toyota knows about this problem, and have read that it was warranted if this happened before 150,000 miles. My Prius has approx 167,000 miles right now and to replace the brake actuator, the cost will be $ 3 - 5 thousand dollars…absurd amount in my opinion. Since this critical feature (brakes) has a long known history of being faulty on Toyota vehicles it should be warranted for at least 25 years and at least 300k ! my Prius is “unsafe to drive” and is nothing more than a paperweight…I repeat, Toyota knows, and has known about this defective brake actuator problem for years and years!!! please lean on Toyota to up the warranty of this faulty brake problem for the many, many Toyota owners who have purchased the Toyota product and and not screwing the public like they are doing now !.

48 Electrical System problem of the 2019 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/17/2024

On Saturday February 17, while shifting to reverse in a back alley to back up slowly, the car engine suddenly and loudly revved and shot backwards at accelerating speed. I slammed on brakes which did not respond at all, thus forcing me to attempt to shift gears which also failed to stop the acceleration. Car only stopped because it went up a curb and hit the corner of a parked vehicle in a neighbors driveway. If I had been on busier street and not a back alley this could have resulted in numerous vehicle collisions and unimagined fatalities. Car is being towed on 2-19-2024 to advanced collision repair on 4511 central Ave, columbia heights, for diagnostic assessment. There were no warning lamps, messages or other indicators prior to this terrifying lack of vehicle control . This was first episode since purchasing car approx one year ago. Incident was captured on neighbor’s home camera. Other neighbor heard the revving and ran out due to spontaneously loud revving of an engine.

49 Electrical System problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/13/2024

Took vehicle for state inspection on 2/13/2024, failed inspection because of brake warning lights. Slip indicator, electronically controlled brake warning light, brake warning light, anti-lock brake system, and low tire pressure lights are all on. I have looked into it, and it seems the brake actuator/booster used to be under warranty, however since this is a 2013 in 2024 with almost 210k miles on it, it no longer qualifies for the original recall.

50 Electrical System problem of the 2014 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/05/2024

I was dropping my daughter off at school and the car completely shut down on me and turned off in the middle of an intersection. I have just had brakes and oil changed but ever since I got the car codes keep popping up and when checked it’s all good. Front lights keep glitching and even with new brakes there is still a bad sound. My dash computer thing keeps going in and out. It happens a lot more when it rains and makes a sizzling sound I’m afraid to drive it in the rain. I’m besides myself how the car turned off on me and my child we couldn’t move I could accelerate and we almost got hit then another light came on and I couldn’t even turn my wheel. Very dangerous.

51 Electrical System problem of the 2012 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/30/2024

The hybrid system was shut down while driving. The symptoms are like the description in this recall (NHTSA campaign number: 18v684000). However, my VIN is not on the recall list.

52 Electrical System problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/22/2024

Abs brake warning light on-stays on-this just happened within last 2 weeks. Not sure on safety measures but unsure if I keep driving it the brakes will just give out. The problem has been confirmed and seen by tire max but no diagnostic tests were ran. The just saw the light was on. No one has inspected the vehicle component by the manufacturer, police, or insurance company. No warning lamps prior to the problem but the abc warning light stays on while cranked and it first appeared about 2 weeks ago. I do want to add that a similiar recall or warranty had been put out by Toyota on sept 4th 2020-(t-sb-0089-20) for 2012-2014 Prius v & c stating: "some 2012-2014 model year Prius v hybrid vehicles may exhibit a condition where the brake, abs, and/or trac warning lights are on and/or a check vsc message displays. Diagnostic trouble codes (dtcs) c1391, c1252, c1256, c1253 may be stored. This condition may be caused by a small internal brake fluid leak inside the brake booster assembly with master cylinder. The warranty was for Prius v or c but my Prius(no v or c) has been affected with the same issue but Toyota will not honor this warranty or recall due to the problem not showing as specific to my VIN#. So I am reporting this problem so it can be submitted that there is a similar problem with my Prius as well as the Prius v or c so others could submit their problem as well. I cannot afford to fix this myself. I need Toyota to back up their cars.

53 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/30/2023

Hello. My 2008 Toyota Prius had a malfunction with the "combination meter" which caused the vehicle dashboard to turn off completely, and we could not turn off the engine at times when stopped and parked. The dealer fixed the problem at a cost of $1580, and both the dealer and Toyota corporate through their brand engagement advocate acknowledged a long term problem with the combination meter. They had extended the warranty coverage for owners for this specific problem for about 10 years but not for owners like me with a vehicle 15 years old. I believe Toyota should cover and reimburse owners for this problem, which is potentially dangerous, no matter the age of the vehicle, especially for long term, loyal owners. There are many of these vehicles still on the road. Thank you. Mike norcio mpnorcio@gmail. Com 301 873 7069.

54 Electrical System problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/20/2023

Brake system failure. Traction control light, brake light, abs light, and brake system warning light all lit up on dash. The regenerative braking is no longer working or charging battery. Obvious loss of stopping power. Does not feel safe to drive at all. Toyota wants $3,000-$4,000 for the repair. Toyota should be held liable for these failures causing crashes and potential fatalities. This should already be a recall.

55 Electrical System problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/17/2023

Check hybrid system. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. About 90,000 miles 2013 Prius bought brand new and regular all dealer maintenance completed. Lost power on the road and very slow pickup. Not drivable and very unsafe car. Thanks.

56 Electrical System problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/26/2023

Hi I want submit issues with the master cylinder and abs pump assy I have 2 vehicles same model with average same mileage and both had issues with this system if I drove any distance below 25 mph in a constant time the dash lights comes on traction control, abs light, brake light , and the brake pedal goes low and barely brakes make this situation dangerous when I stop if you try turn it off the engine and on again lights stay there but if I reset the codes the pump works again for some while and then again when you don’t expected lose pressure and I am really afraid for my safety and my family, and I am not the only one with this problem is too many Prius owners who have the issues I went from dealer and they advice $3000 dlls fix situation who motivate people to lose money for $1200 in parts and $1800 dlls in labor for something they can resolve it because in reality is an manufactured defect.

57 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/01/2023

Combination meter often does not turn on when turning the car on. This means you cannot see a speedometer, any warning lights, fuel tank levels, or mileage. Also the trunk gets locked and is unable to open. Sometimes the car will not turn off. This has been happening on and off for over a year but has gotten increasingly worse. There are no warning signs. This can happen any time you turn on the car but might not always happen. It can also prevent you from turning off the car. When searching online, it seems this is a common problem with high mileage Priuses between 2005-2009 and so Toyota extended a warranty on it but did not tell all of the owners, most likely to get out of a recall.

58 Electrical System problem of the 2005 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/01/2023

I had lost functionality for some buttons on the steering wheel that didn't directly impact safety. On replacing the clockspring mechanism inside the whweel I decided to inspect the old unit. Four of the lines in the flex cable are impacted by corrosion, three have already failed. The fourth line is one of the airbag's electrical lines. I'm filing an issue report because the airbag would be next impacted by this failure and I believe there's a fair chance the corroded line could fail during the vehicle's attempt to fire the airbag on the wheel.

59 Electrical System problem of the 2011 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 09/12/2023

Brake booster and brake booster pump assembly are faulty and failing. Brakes are still functioning, but will ultimately fail without warning, from what I have read. This is highly dangerous for myself and other motorists. I was driving last week and tried coming to a stop at an intersection. I pushed the brake pedal and the car hesitated and then jumped/lurched forward before coming to a complete stop. The brake booster is sounding every 30 to 45 seconds to try and build back the pressure it is losing. Toyota offered a "customer support program" for these parts, as there's been numerous premature failures. Unfortunately, my vehicle no longer fits within the parameters of the support program (see attached). From what I've read though, Toyota has been negligent with replacing the brake booster under the support program. I have called Toyota corporate and they have offered no reprieve and won't stand behind this faulty part. Toyota needs to be forced to recall these 3rd gen Priuses and ordered to replace the breaking system. Expecting customers to shell out between $2-3k to have the ability to safely break/stop their vehicle is ridiculous, especially when Toyota is more than aware of this issue. I was quoted $2600 over the phone to remedy the issue from an independent hybrid shop. I've owned 7 Toyota's and two have been Priuses. This 2011 is by far one of their worst to roll off the assembly line with numerous reports of breaking problems, oil consumption issues, and head gasket failures. They need to stand behind their product(s), especially to brand loyal customers. Read more complaints about the breaking system: https://m. Carcomplaints. Com/Toyota/prius/2011/brakes/service_brakes. 60 Electrical System problem of the 2014 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/29/2023

The car began to jerk, made knocking noises, miss fires on cylinder 1, 2 and 4, coolant leakages, oil leakages, compression issues and the check engine light keeps turning on and off. My safety has been put into play because, the car would jerk many of times as it would want to stop as I was driving. I would then have to pull over and call for assistance. Per the Toyota service advisor he recommended that I needed a new rebuilt engine kit. The extended warranty company stated that I was negligent with my car and denied my claim and refused to pay for the 10 grand motor and I had to tow my car to another shop. However, the car at this time is still experiencing the same malfunctions. The warning lamps are still showing at this present time and prior to the failure of problem. This car meets the "lemon law guidelines, however, I have been informed otherwise that I don't meet the criteria for lemon law due it being expired sometime last year in oct of 2024. As stated this is a lemon car.

61 Electrical System problem of the 2012 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/24/2023

The contact owns a 2012 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at an undisclosed speed and attempting to accelerate, the vehicle lost motive and failed to accelerate above 30 mph. The contact stated that the hybrid system warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 14v053000 (hybrid propulsion system, electrical system) but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 120,000.

62 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/14/2023

The hybrid water pump failed/ aka the inverter coolant pump. This was recalled years ago and has failed again. The previous owner of my car replaced it in 2013, so Toyota is refusing to replace it again, despite the fact that the part is faulty and has compromised the safety of my vehicle. This issue was diagnosed by a mechanic yesterday, error code p0a93. The master warning light, check engine light, brake light came on. The ac stopped working. The brakes nearly gave out on me driving on a bridge in new york city. This part was recalled. Toyota refuses to honor the recall a second time. They clearly did not properly engineer this part! it failed again! they should be responsible for fixing this issue.

63 Electrical System problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/01/2023

It is a known problem that Priuses manufactured from 2004 to 2015 have issues with the brake master cylinder and brake booster accumulator. When the vehicle computer recognizes an internal leak (abs c1391) or other issue in the accumulator pump, it completely disables the regenerative braking system, which significantly reduces braking power. In my case, the problem is intermittent, and the vehicle computer will occasionally clear the code and operate normally. A slight whirring sound can still be heard (indicative of an internal leak), leading me to conclude that the part is still damaged, even when the code clears itself. This continues to affect my and my passengers' safety because the problem comes back with no warning while driving. Many times at highway speeds, the regenerative braking system will shut off while decelerating. This has caused scares and near-accidents. Imagine you are approaching stopped traffic while traveling 65 miles per hour. You press the brake to start slowing down, and while decelerating, the dashboard lights up and the brake pedal goes spongey. Now, you must slam the brake all the way into the firewall to engage the disks and pads exclusively. Aside from the imminent terror of hitting the car in front of you, now you are skidding on the brakes, worried the car behind you will crush the rear. Sooner or later this will cause somebody to get into an accident when a split-second decision cannot to be made quickly enough. The issue is well-known, and a warranty recall was issued, but it does not cover any vehicles over a certain age and mileage. It has been reproduced by my local mechanic and inspected by a Prius specialist, who both quote about $3800 to fully replace and recalibrate the failing parts. There were no indicators of this issue before it happened to my wife and I the first time on the highway. While I am grateful that nobody was injured, the situation could be completely different had the problem occurred just seconds later.

64 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/01/2023

One afternoon, in the summer of 23, I entered my Toyota Prius to run some errands. Once I proceeded to power on the car, none of the dashboard lights illuminated. This included the gas gauge, speedometer & transmission indicator. Fortunately, I was only driving a few blocks down the road from my residence as I live in a small rural town with little congestion, little traffic and mostly two-lane roads. I can't imagine this occurring in a much larger metropolitan city. When I arrived at my destination, I discovered that my Prius wouldn't shut off. This dashboard malfunction was preventing the Toyota from powering off. I quickly completed my errands with my vehicle running during this entire ordeal. Finally, when I returned home, I frantically researched on youtube regarding this issue and discovered many others who also were having these no-illuminating-dashboard problems. Some youtubers offered workarounds but the solutions will be temporary as the problem will eventually worsen until the Prius owners have no working dashboard lights. From the way I understand it, this problem is nothing more than a small computer board that's behind the speedometer and this computer board has a small diode that tends to burn out on all kinds of Toyota Priuses when it reaches around 150,000 miles.

65 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/01/2023

When the 12-volt battery in this car dies, there is no warning light to indicate the battery is dead or is running low. The driver is given no warning or indication prior to the car being disabled. Once the battery dies, the vehicle immediately decelerates, there is no acceleration, the braking system becomes mostly disabled, and the power steering is not functional. The car becomes disabled, while being driven, without warning. When this event happens, there is a high pitched screaching alarm, and the majority of the dash lights turn on. None of which indicate there is an issue with the 12-volt battery. The large red triangle light with the exclamation mark comes on, as well the lights indicating that there is a problem with the brakes. Additional dash lights also turn on during this dangerous event. The rear view monitor screen states that there is an issue with the transmission. The reality that a minor 12- volt battery is responsible for disabling a vehicle is extremely dangerous, especially since it happens when the car is being driven. This is a serious issue. Toyota must include an indicator light that warns the driver the battery is low prior to the car being being disabled. Please investigate this matter, as it seems to be a common problem, based on online research. My safety was in jeopardy due to the fact that I was driving the car on a main road, with moderate traffic, and lost control of the car as it became disabled. To get my car off of the road required the assistance of several good samaritans who used their bodies to block traffic in order to get the car out of the flow of oncoming traffic. Fourteen days later, after the battery was replaced, and the car serviced/inspected, I drove the car 10 to 15 miles, wherein the car did the same thing. Per the dealership, the issue was not the 12- bolt battery. Thank you for your time and consideration. Kindly, cynthia becker 623-209-4290 cjbecker246@gmail. Com.

66 Electrical System problem of the 2015 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 06/22/2023

When I parked my car and stopped the engine after driving for 90 min/62 miles on June 22, 2023, I found that I couldn't lock my car's door, through my remote, door handle or the switch inside the door. Upon further examination, I saw complete loss of the power: no light, no audio, no other accessory power, no start of engine. Foot press on the brake feels heavy/less responsive. One hr after the incident I went back (because I had some business to attend) to the car, everything looked normal (with full functions recovered) as if nothing happened before. 6 hrs later the car still behaved fine. I measured 12-v battery and it registered 12. 3 v (I bought the car new 8 years ago and I haven't changed the battery yet). I noticed that my the clock in the car lost 10 mins (behind correct time) and I concluded the complete loss of battery power lasted about 10 mins. By the time of this report, I have started the engine 5 times without any problem but this loss of power gravely concerns me. I saw recalls for similar problems affecting similar Prius models/years however my car is not on the list.

67 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 06/03/2023

I was driving down the main road at night time in my 2006 Prius and the headlights both went out and all most caused a crash. I pulled over turned my car off then back on and the headlights came back on so I started driving home. After driving a couple blocks I was pulled over by the police because my drivers side headlight was off. Luckily he let me go with a warning, but I work at night and am losing money daily because of this problem. I sent Toyota a email and no answer. There has been many electrical problems with this car and the speedometer still says I am deiving 34 to 35 mph while I am actually only going 30mph. I think that Toyota should fully fix the problems in thos car. Its amazing there can be so much wrong with a vehicle and they not have to replace the vehicle with a vehicle that works or fix all the problems and give me a loaner vehicle. I will upload a picture of what the Toyota dealership nearest to me wanted just to replace 1 bulb ans the balast wires going to the light for one loght they want $211. 34 and that is just for the bulb and wire. For there time they said each bulb and wire would be around $500 worth of repair time to pay for them to put the new light and wire in so for one lightbulb with rhe wire would be about $800-$1000 for the dealership to replace the parts, so basically $2000 to replace both light bulbs and the wires and pay the Toyota company to put them in. If you look at the estimate it is for 1 bulb and 1wire and that would be the price if I put them in and if I only wanted the parts. So $211. 34 then I would have to double it because I would need 2 bulbs and 2 wires. Then I would have to add another $1000. That is $500 for labor for them to put the bulbs in per each bulb and wire and they said its not guaranteed it will fix the problem. So that is $422. 68 for parts and they said somewere around $500 for them to install each bulb and wire and after it might not even fix the problem. So that is $2422. 68 to maybe fix the problem.

68 Electrical System problem of the 2022 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 06/01/2023

Extremely loud, ear-piercing noise from speakers when the vehicle is started. Lasts about two to three seconds. My ears have been damaged by it. My young boys cried while in their car seats and said that their ears hurt. Noise occurs randomly. Dealer states that they can't do anything since it is not reproducible. I offered to record the noise when I enter the car. I would have to have my cell phone ready to do this every time I start the car. Dealer said they will not accept recordings or videos. It has to occur in the presence of their technician. I filed a complaint with Toyota corporate. They said it's up to the dealer. No help there. . Read more...

Problem is with what Toyota calls the combination meter of the instrument cluster. Problem is that displayed icons are washed out and/or unreadable under conditions of normal sunny skies. (there is no problem during darkness or overcast skies). Specifically, (going from left to right), "headlight high beam indicator," "shift position indicators," "cruise control indicator," and passenger air bag status indicators are washed out or unreadable. The result is that important safety information is denied to the driver. Toyota of nashua has inspected my concerns and agrees my observations are accurate but further states this situation is the same for all 2022 Priuses and no safety recall or service bulletin has been issued by Toyota.
