36 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/22/2016

Car purchased new and serviced at Toyota dealership every 10,000 miles using 0-20w synthetic oil. At around 106,000 miles I noticed the display flashing something but could not, at that time, read what the warning was. It seemed to happen going around curves, turning etc. Finally, at maybe 107,000 miles, the warning stayed on long enough to see the low oil warning. Took the car in at 108,000 (no oil on dipstick at that point) and the service department checked for leaks and found none. I was lightly admonished by service for driving without oil. Fair enough, I thought at the time. I was slightly chagrined as I have always religiously had my oil changed (or changed it myself) on all my cars at the recommended intervals with no signs of a problem. The Toyota service department recommended that I monitor oil usage. I did, and to my surprise 2,500 hundred miles later, I had to add a full quart. Then 1950 miles later, another quart. Yesterday, another quart at 1048 miles. Very disappointed as the car has been without problems until now. Have not discussed this with the dealership, but am not encouraged by the tenor of comments posted here regarding Toyota stepping up and accepting responsibility. I see no need, at this point, to pay to have an oil consumption test done by the dealership as the car is obviously using an excessive amount of oil.

37 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/19/2016

I just tested all years from 2010 to 2011 Prius, those Prius burns a lot of oil at every 2,000 miles. I did fill it (at 4. 4 quarts of oil) correctly it but Prius ate over 3 quarts in 2000 miles. Like many of people have been reports this on Priuschat. Com and etc online forums. I hate to spend my money to buy motor oils! why this Prius excessive oil consumption? "what did this happen?" I just purchased 2010 Prius on oct. 2016. And I tested it. It still oil consumption. Toyota dealer can't do anything for motor oil. Since it happened, I still check oil level at every 2,000 miles and put it some motor oil in it until it reach to 5,000 miles for synthetic oil change.

40 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Toyota has excluded the Prius in advising their owner about excessive oil consumption but included the camry, corolla, seqoiua etc. It burns/not leaks 1 quart every 1,000miles. No warning light on the Prius just have to keep checking it. Dealer says no fix except eventually put in a new engine. On the Prius chat forum many people have noted the same problem with no assistance from Toyota.

41 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/13/2016

Over the past three weeks I have noticed the check major system light flickering when turning to the left or right or coming to a sudden stop. I took my car in for the 80,000 mile check and told the service technician what I had seen. He told me he could tell me what the issue was without looking at the car. He said the car was burning excessive oil, the issue has been reported to Toyota and he would file a case with them for me. He also told me the cost was about $3000 to fix the problem, that I may or may not hear back from Toyota about this. When they finished servicing my car the technician told me they had added extra oil to top it off. This is the first Toyota I have owned. I bought it new and have never had an issue with it. I have taken it in for every maintenance check. I was disappointed that Toyota knows about this issue and has done nothing to notify owners of the issue.

43 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/01/2016

My Toyota Prius has not been identified as one of the models in this class action law suit, but approximately four months ago, at 110,000 miles, my vehicle started to burn oil excessively, causing me to have to fill it every 1,200 miles. I take it in for maintenance to the same person at the same dealership since I have owned the car new. I was notified of this problem with the piston rings with the other Toyota models and that some of the Prius models have also had this issue. This has me very concerned that other owners have been left out of this suit. Considering there are millions of Prius owners that have stood behind Toyota and the Prius as the top hybrid on the market, there needs to be something done about this. Toyota oil consumption defect class action lawsuit is April lax, et al. V. Toyota motor corporation, et al. , case no. 14-cv-01490, in the u. S. District court for the northern district of California.

45 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 06/02/2016

I have had our pruis for a while now and I loved the car. Now the car is a nightmare and a danger. The engine is burning oil at an alarming rate and couldn't figure out why. We are having to put oil in it every couple of days . It did stall once, so I checked everything I could and then noticed there was hardly any oil on dip stick after change oil a couple of days before. The dealership doesn't tell you anything about the hazardous or recalls for the car. They just tell you to get another oil change. Its recommended every 3,000-5,000 miles but every 1,000 miles is ridiculous plus extremely expensive if you add it up. We cant afford to have the engine rebuilt either. Toyota needs to do something about this problem. I cant believe they know of the problem and don't care about their customers' safety. I also read some other complaints and issues with the oil burning off causing harmful gases. My wife was back and forth to the doctor for throat issues. I believe it was the car all long, hundreds in doctor bills for their lack of humanity. So here we go again, another visit to the dealership. I want this problem fixed by Toyota. We might have to take legal action.

50 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 05/21/2016

In 2016 about the 130,000+ mile mark on my vehicle, I started complaining about my car consuming oil. The dealer findlay Toyota assured me that it had to do with the heat and was normal. I was lead to believe the paper I signed after the work was complete has to do with the maintenance being done, no one mentioned it meant all my concerns were acknowledged. The days continued and even in during colder months of the year of 2016, I again notified the dealership of my car eating oil and it was nowhere to be found. Again I complained and it was not annotated or written anywhere in their files. It was not until 26,000 miles plus more that they finally acknowledged my issue and took their time to search for the cause. In the month of March 2017, one individual from Toyota actually took his time and did a full check, instead of the usual its hot here and that eats your oil excuse, he give me an answer which lead to me having concerns about Toyota dealerships, he said the pistons had a leak and it was burning up my oil. I called Toyota and found out my car had a recall for this issue but here is the catch, my car would have to be under 150,000 miles, which it was under when I started to first complain. Now that I am over that mileage and was never notified, great dealerships tell you when you take your car for any maintenance about recalls, they say it sup to me to fix this issue they knew these cars have. Since they never wrote down any of my complains, there is no proof of me complaining. This car burns oil moving or sitting as long as the pistons are moving. Where has the honesty and professionalism of findlay Toyota. What is my next step I ask the reader?.

53 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/10/2016

Car is burning excessive amounts of oil. Dealer told me (over phone) that triangle was from taking corners too fast (dealer has since said this was inaccurate info). Oil change for life (every 10k miles) at dealer and no one has ever notified me that car is using oil. 6,000 miles after last oil change, over 3 1/2 quarts of oil used. I nearly locked up the engine. Car is not leaking oil. Car sometimes smells of oil after starting. Toyota has extended warranty for certain models for this same problem, but not for Prius. My car has 117,000 miles and this problem has been going on for at least the last 25,000 miles (based upon orange warning triangle). According to dealer, problem is with rings (which is the recall for other Toyota cars). Also, according to dealer, this is a real problem for other Prius owners with 100,000+ miles. I consider this very dangerous to safe operation of vehicle and fumes from burnt oil.

54 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2016 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/08/2016

The car started to burn lot of oil. Like 1 quart for every 1000 to 1200 miles. When I googled, I saw I was one in a million as already Prius owners were shouting about this issue online. When I called and explained the problem to autonation dealer in tempe, he clearly understood this problem(because he faced the complaints) and he said it would cost 6000 bucks to fix. Toyota is not ready to extend the warranty for this problem. But, the dealer is ready to buy this car for just 1000 bucks. My car's current value in kbb is 7800 bucks.

55 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/01/2016

Excessive oil consumption starting at 100,000 which worsened. I now have to put a quart of oil every 750-1000 miles in my 2010 Prius. No one at Toyota will admit this is a problem, albeit there are an extreme amount of these complaints online through different blogs and web sites. Really, we Toyota owners bought this car to decrease our carbon footprint. . . Ironic, right?.

56 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/14/2016

I along with an alarming amount of others have experienced the 2010 Prius begin to burn oil at an alarmingly high rate around 60-80k miles. This is accompanied with an emission into the cabin of noxious fumes during high oil burn rate (heavier acceleration) moments. We have all been told by the dealerships that this is "normal". This has led to burning over a quart of oil every 1000 miles, headaches from the fumes, and now I have found out there is substantial soot buildup in the engine resulting from the oil burning requiring very costly repairs. Toyota refuses to do anything to help or even acknowledge the costly issue.

57 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/01/2016

I have had my 2008 Prius since it was new and I have taken meticulous care of the vehicle with documentation to prove it. The vehicle is burning oil to the extent that I have to put a quart of oil in every 700 miles. My local dealership confirmed it is an issue with the vehicle but Toyota USA said they won't do anything about it because there "has not been enough complaints". However, the Toyota Prius chat website has numerous complaints about oil consumption. Toyota did an extended warranty for the corolla and camry but refuses to do anything for the Prius. Numerous attempts have been made with Toyota USA to correct this issue but they refuse to do so. They did say they corrected the issue in the newer models . . . But yet don't want to acknowledge that is it an issue! so, they corrected an issue that they currently don't acknowledge is an issue!! second to this issue is that the back window can only be closed by the driver's window button and will not close for the person sitting at that window in the back.

61 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 09/05/2015

I'm the original owner and do my own regular oil changes at the manufacture specified intervals of 5000 miles. This last time I noticed not much oil coming out of the drain pan, poured it back into an empty oil jug to measure and yes only 1. 5 quarts drained out. I haven't seen any smoke or smelled any oil burning and no obvious leaks. I don't run the engine hard or at high speeds (less than half my driving is interstate) but can't figure out why it's all of a sudden started using oil. When I searched online it seems to be a common failure with Prius over 100k miles. I want to add my other Toyota and Honda vehicles have lasted well over 200k and 180k miles with no engine troubles at all (I also do the maintenance on them).

62 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 09/01/2015

Excessive oil consumption. Recently I notice oil pressure low light lights frequently. It used the oil was changed every time the maintenance light come up. About every 5000 miles. Now the low oil pressure comes almost every 1000 miles. The car only has 89k miles.

63 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/10/2015

At 92,000 miles my vehicle started to burn oil excessively, I made multiple trips to the dealership, they did multiple tesst and continued to maintain(per Toyota corporate) that I was within Toyota guidelines. This causes me to fill oil every 400-600 miles to be safe and I have found it completely devoid of oil many times. I understand from the dealership that some of the Prius models have also had this issue and have been showing up at the dealership but the company has refused to correct the problem. This has me concerned - there needs to be something done about this excessive oil consumption as my engine could completely cease at any time causing a massive safety hazard. I have all the records and formal complaint to Toyota on file. I have tried to work with them in good faith until now.

64 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/24/2015

Excessive oil consumption, 2-3 qt per 5000 miles.

65 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/15/2015

Request help with 2011 Toyota Prius oil consumption, quality, safety, & air pollution issues: I bought the car new. Just after 100,000 miles I noticed it was using oil between oil changes. It has gotten way worse to now at 145,000 miles it used 3 qts in 2000 miles. It does not warn you that the oil level is low until you are 3. 5 qts low & a messages says you have low oil pressure. This is unsafe in that the car could go dry on oil and the engine sieze up. There is a TSB on this for other Toyota vehicles, but not yet Prius. I believe Prius needs to be added to the list & I want Toyota to replace my engine or at least the piston rings. So far Toyota is not admitting to oil consumption problems with the Prius. This is also a possible emissions issue. I contacted Toyota's customer experience center in Feb 2016 and they set-up case no. 1602170764 to track my complaint. They referred me to alamo Toyota in san antonio. I do not believe that Toyota is being proactive in addressing this problem. After researching this issue on line, I have found many other Toyota Prius owners with the same problem. The problem does not show up until you are close to the 80,000-100,000 miles point and so for those folks that drive less, the problem may not show up for another couple of years. I thank you in advance for any help that you can provide to me. I spent over $23,000 for this car and hoped it would give me trouble-free transportation for more than 4 years and 100,000 miles.

70 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 03/31/2014

Serious oil consumption. Took it to three different Toyota dealerships and they all have said the oil consumption is within normal limits. Have to add oil every1000 miles. I never had to add oil to a car and this my third Toyota. The third dealership even told me to trade it in and get a new one. I have seen others complain about this on carcomplaints. Com.
