37 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2005 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/22/2014

Purchased this vehicle used as a means of fuel efficient transportation while I am in college. I began experiencing headlight failure on the vehicle about a week after purchasing it from the dealership. When I brought it to their attention, I was informed that the headlights were under recall and would be replaced. A few months later the passenger side headlight began flickering again and went out again. The headlight comes on initially before flickering (sometimes violently) and going out again. I suspect that it is a power supply issue and not a headlight issue.

39 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

Low beam headlights have failed . Drivers right headlight fails mostly, but left headlight fails about 33% of the time. I have lost both headlights after a while and is extremely dangerous at night! we have had to stop driving at night because headlights will not stay on past 5 mins. I have looked into the class action lawsuit and at 60000 miles I do not qualify for the settlement. I am very concerned with the safety of my family. I hope Toyota finds a real fix for this problem, or the 1000+ dollar fix will be for nothing. At this point I have lost faith in Toyota and I hope this issue is addressed properly.

40 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2009 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 04/18/2014

On multiple occasions prior to the most recent incident date listed, the previously mentioned 2009 Toyota Prius has had intermittent complete or partial headlight failure. On multiple occasions that seem to be random in nature either the drivers side or passenger side headlight will fail individual while the counterpart (opposite headlight) will continue to operate. Also, as random as one individual headlight failing both headlights have gone out or failed simultaneously. The operator has been able to rectify the immediate hazard by simply turning the main activation switch for the headlight from "on" to "off" and then to "on" again. This procedure will, on most occasions temporarily rectify the immediate hazard but the intermittent failure has and will continue. Operator conducted research on the issue and discovered this is a common problem the 2005-2009 Toyota Prius is displaying. Toyota corporate was contacted by the operator and stated that a customer care initiative was directed to all Toyota service departments to reduce the cost of replacement bulbs. However, what is unique about this situation is a headlamp hid bulb on the drivers side was replaced approximately one year ago and is the more frequent headlamp failure occurring. This seems to invalidate the remedy that Toyota corporate has devised which is to replace the bulbs.

41 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/21/2014

When I was on the freeway, one of my headlights just went out. I had the same exact headlight replaced only one year ago. A few days later, both of my headlights had the same problem. They would flicker and then just go out while I am driving at high speeds. If I turn the light switch on and off while I am driving they sometimes come back on. Sometimes I have to pull over and restart the car for them to come back on. This issue is not safe! please help.

42 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2006 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/06/2014

Both of my hid headlights went out (turned off) during normal highway driving. Since then, the lights have continued to turn off randomly during normal driving. When I turn the switch off and then back on, the lights operate fine for a while, then go back off. This is a very dangerous issue and I see it is a common issue.

45 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/17/2013

I have a 2007 touring Prius with hid headlamps and 1 of the headlamp assembly started leaking water and Toyota of kingsport, TN. Replaced it on oct. 28th 2013 and charged me $342. 30 after discount. Now the new headlight and the other one is going off while driving and this happened on may 29th 2014. There is no way a headlight should fail in 6 or 7 months. Thank you for listening to my complaint, as I can't afford to keep replacing these very expensive headlamps. I went online and it seems I'm not the only one with this problem and can you get Toyota to do something about this? I would appreciate any help you can give us Prius owners with the hid headlamp system.

46 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/22/2013

I was driving on a dark country road when both headlights went out. I turned the headlight control off and then on and then the lights came on again. The car has a long history of the passenger side headlight going out intermittently. When it was just one light intermittently going out, I had reported this to the dealer and later to an independent mechanic. I was told that they didn't find a problem. After this most recent experience with both lights going out at the same time, my mechanic again said that it was not happening when he test drove the car. I asked him to keep it longer for more testing since I was afraid now to drive the car at night. He kept it longer and did experience the driver side headlight going out. He recommended replacing both bulbs for a total price of $548. I called the Toyota dealer to ask what they could do for me. Since the car is past 50,000 miles they said they would have to charge $475 to change both headlights. I researched online and discovered that this is a very common problem in the Prius. In my opinion it is a serious safety issue and not a normal part maintenance issue.

47 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2009 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/20/2013

Driving and my left headlight spontaneously turned off. If is not burned out, as it was working when I left, and stopping and restarting the car turned it back on. Very dangerous as the road was dark, not to mention I don't want a traffic ticket. Please stop ignoring this problem.

48 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2006 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/17/2013

Purchased 2006 Toyota Prius used on Aug 17, 2013 (61,500 miles). Within a month I was pulled over by police for passenger side headlight out while driving at night, but when headlamps are turned off and on again the headlight came back on, and the police officer thought he was crazy so he just issued a warning. The headlight continued to go out intermittently and I replaced the bulbs myself in November 2013 (philips hid headlight bulbs $95). The headlight still went out intermittently and I finally replaced both headlight assemblies in July 2016 by an independent mechanic (approximately $1000 at 143,000 miles). Passenger side headlight still goes out intermittently. Nhtsa launched a probe in April 2009, but then dropped the investigation after Toyota said it would initiate a "consumer service campaign" to address the issue. Then there was a class action settlement in 2011, all of which the previous car owner missed. Toyota uses "campaigns" to avoid recalls. . Read more...

49 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2005 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/07/2013

The headlights would shut off and not come back on during various speeds. It was extremely dangerous. While driving at night at 65mph a headlight ( randomly left or right) would shut off at night). I would have to pull over and turn the light switch off to reactivate the headlight!!! the headlight would come back on once the switch was turned off and on again, but several miles down the road, a headlight would go off again!!! this is extremely dangerous!! we brought it to a Toyota garage, and were told there was a recall on these headlights but not for our 2005 vehicle. We paid $476. 00 to replace both headlights!! how can headlights be recalled for this problem and be covered for certain years only??? with the research I have done it appears this is a dangerous problem for 2005 models too!!! why wait for accidents or deaths??? thus occurred at all speeds!!.

50 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 06/28/2013

I was driving down the highway at night at approx. 70 mph and both headlights turned off. I then slowed down and shut the headlights off manually and then turned them back on. Both headlights turned on and worked properly. Within that week I brought the car to a shop and had him replace both headlights at a crazy cost. Thinking that this fixed the problem I continued to drive the car, I have had one other time that both headlights went out but have had multiple times where one head light would go out. I have been pulled over by the authorities at least twice by having the headlight out. In order to fix the lights I have to shut them off and then turn them back on. This is very unsafe, my life, my family members life, and possible other lives are at risk!!!.

51 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2005 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 06/21/2013

Both hid headlights went out at the same time. I can toggle the light switch off and on and one or both lights came back on. Then went out again within a few seconds to a minute, over and over. Makes no difference if car is not moving at all or going 70 mph. I was able to drive the 15 miles home at night without incident. Went to dealer next day and they say all that is wrong is that the headlights are burned out. Estimate to replace both is $474. 31. I do not believe that they would burn out at exactly the same time. And if they are burned out then why do they come back on and off. I have done research and found the class action settlement for 2006-2009 models. I also found that you have had hundreds of complaints about the 2005 model yet you have not considered this a safety matter. I disagree. Even if you don't help me, I want my complaint included in your database.

54 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 03/11/2013

Intermittent headlight failure. Headlight will go out. Usually, if lights are turned off and back on, headlight will come back on. Sometimes the headlight will turn on, sometimes it won't. This has happened several times (3 or 4) since I have noticed the failure two months ago.

55 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/10/2013

Both headlights went out without warning. This has recurred numerous times since then, also with taillights. I've been pulled over 4 times by police for lights out. Next day, they're fine, or a different light is out. Very dangerous and scary, as we live in a rural area with windy roads and no street lights.

56 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2009 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/30/2013

The headlights have been going out randomly for the last few months but only one at a time. This evening while driving home from a late meeting, both headlights went out while driving at 55mph. I pulled off the highway and tried turning the car off and on again. Headlights went on when I turned the car back on, so I resumed driving only to have the lights go out again! this time I flicked on the high beams and the lights came on. I stopped to grab a bite to eat figuring I could do the high beam trick again. When I started the car, the lights went on and high beams turned on when I engaged the lever. While driving home, less than 2 miles from where I started the car, headlights went out and the high beams did not work either when I attempted to turn them on. I pulled over to turn the car off and on again but with no luck this time. Very slowly drove the last mile home on the less traveled road with my flashers on. . . This situation is incredibly dangerous.

57 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/17/2013

Recently purchased used 2008 Prius. When driving at night I noticed that the headlights shut off intermittently. They go back on by turning lights off and on. This happened three times when driving for 10 minutes on a dark road. Very dangerous!.

58 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/31/2012

My headlights keep going out. Both headlights will go out at once. I've replaced the bulbs which did not change anything. I also contacted Toyota multiple times, all incidents ending up in them telling me they would do nothing about the issue, it's not a recall and will not be a recall and it's my responsibility to take care of. Even after I pointed out the multiple articles I read of Toyota reimbursing and extending the warranties for this issue. Along with the class action lawsuit. I've long extended the warranty because I bought the car used. It had over 30,000 miles on it when I bought it. The Toyota dealership is even less of a help! going down a dark highway at 65 mph and both headlights going out is insane. Not to mention being pulled over multiple times for the headlight(s) being out. This is one of the worst safety hazards a car can have and should recalled and every Prius owner should have this issue taken care of!.

59 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/27/2012

The front headlights intermittently shut off. Sometimes it's the left and or right headlight separately and sometimes they shut off together. If I toggle the lights on and off, they may or may not turn back on. It was very dangerous driving at night on the highway.

60 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/25/2012

I purchased my 07 Prius from a dealership in September of 2012. There was only 1 previous owner & at that time my car's mileage was around 55k. I commute 1 hr and 20 minutes to work (one way) & my first incident occurred after dropping my son off at daycare early in the morning, almost a month after purchasing my car. I noticed my right headlight was out. When I got into my car, I turned the headlights off and back on. Both my headlights came back on so I didn't think twice about it. Afterwards, almost every month I noticed my right headlight turned off, which started to concern me, but after getting quotes on how much the repairs would be I knew it would take some time for me to budget the costs into my monthly expenses. After another month or so, I found myself driving on highway 55 westbound (cary, nc) at around 9pm at night & both of my headlights suddenly shut off. Highway 55 does not have much lighting in the first place & I am very lucky that my 2 year old son was not with me. I panicked but quickly turned my headlights off & on again. Fortunately, they turned back on. Now almost every month, & aside from one of my headlights failing nearly every 2 days, both of my headlights randomly shut off. In fact, my headlights shut off again this morning at around 5:45am during my commute to work on highway 55. I did some research but found Toyota has only agreed to pay for repairs for '04-'09 models (with the same hid headlight issue) through the earlier of 5 years warranty and 50,000 miles or reimburse drivers who have already paid to have the problem corrected. I've already contacted Toyota at 1800-331-4331 and filed a complaint but I was told that my car (at 102k miles) was now ineligible for this program. This issue should be an official recall to avoid any severe accidents it can cause for owners who cannot afford upfront repairs.

61 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2006 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/01/2012

My wife and I purchased a used 2006 Toyota Prius. After about 6 months one headlight would go out. We could cycle the switch and the headlight would work again. After replacing the bulb with a original bulb. Both headlight have gone out. I took the vehicle to our local Toyota dealership. They quoted a repair of $3800. I began looking for a lees expensive shop to do the repairs, when the owner of a shop[ informed me that Toyota had settled a class action lawsuit concerning the hid ( high intensity display) units. That settlement has now passed the date to submit a claim. All claims had to be submitted by may 30th 2011. We had not purchased our vehicle at that time. Why has there not been a recall done on these vehicles? obviously Toyota is aware that there is a problem with in the system or they would not of settled the class action suit. We now have a vehicle that we paid $15000 for that can not be driven at night or when it is raining out, because the faulty headlight installed by the manufacture. How can the government allow a major vehicle manufacture to allow these cars to stay on the road, and risk serious injury?.

62 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2005 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 09/01/2012

The left headlight unexpectedly goes out. If I turn the lights off and on again, the headlight comes back on, but soon repeats going out.

63 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2006 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/25/2012

The right headlight went out and then went on. The problem has recurred. Now the left headlight went out and then went on. We read that this is a common problem with the 2006 Toyota. Will there be a recall?.

64 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/07/2012

The problem that is causing the head lights to burn out simultaneously needs to be resolved. It is a safety hazard for this to continue. Purchased a Toyota Prius 2010 in December 2010. Since that time, the head lights have been a problem. Each time there is a problem, both head lights burn out simultaneously. The first time the head lights failed was August 7, 2012 when there were five of us in the car driving 15+ miles with about a third of the drive on many residential streets that were not well lit. The dealership in florida was called and it was explained that both headlights burned out at the same time and that it must be something other than the bulbs because headlights do not burn out together at the same time. The service representative quoted that the cost of the repair to replace the head lights was about $150. He did not ask if the car was under warranty and he did not acknowledge that it could be something in the electrical system. He did not suggest that the car be brought in to have them put it on diagnostic machines to verify where the problem may be. We opted to replace the bulbs ourselves. The second time both head lights burned out simultaneously was October 21, 2012 and we again, replaced the bulbs ourselves. The cost of the bulbs including tax is $54. 36. This morning is the third time both lights have burned out at the same time again. The Prius has 35,840 miles. This is not reasonable. We have already spent $108. 72 to replace the bulbs twice. It is unreasonable. It is extremely unsafe not knowing when and where the head lights will burn out. We have teenage drivers and it is upsetting to know they are not in a safe vehicle.

65 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

The right headlight on my 2008 Prius went out while driving. I noticed the next morning that it was back on. I figured out that if I turn the light off then on again, it will come back on, for a while. I eventually had it replaced, to the tune of $120 parts and $40 labor. But after a couple of weeks it's doing it again. Not only that, but now the left headlight is doing the same thing. I'm very concerned about driving at night because changing the bulbs doesn't fix the problem, so it seems like it's only a matter of time before they both go out at the same time!.

66 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2004 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/16/2012

The headlights go out randomly while driving at night. You have to turn them off and then turn them back on for them to work and they only last a minute after that. Huge safety issue!!.

67 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 05/23/2012

The passenger side headlight frequently fails to turn on. Sometimes it turns on, then shuts off within the course of a drive. Sometimes it doesn't turn on at all. It seems like it must be a problem with the electrical system, as the bulb itself continues to light, it just doesn't light all the time. The driver's side headlight, in the mean time, is perfectly fine and never has problems, which also suggests some kind of electrical/connector issue.

68 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/17/2012

Both headlights go out without warning, I can turn the headlights back on by turning switch off and then back on. In doing research I have found this is a common defect with the Toyota Prius years 2006-2009. Why isn't this a recall? when getting an estimate to fix is up to a $1,000. I feel like Toyota needs to step up before someone is hurt or dead from an accident pertaining to this issue.

69 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 09/09/2011

While driving to work one headlight went out and stayed out until I stopped the car turned off the lights and then turned them back on. This went on for a week and we took the car into Toyota dealership where the replaced the bulbs at no charge cause we were under warranty. However, this problem has continued to happen over the last 80000 miles. Now we are seeing both headlights go out at the same time and or one or the other. We are tired of purchasing new headlights over and over again. .

70 Headlights Turn Off While Driving problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/14/2011

While driving the left headlight went out I turned off the lights and back on, the headlight came back on. Since this first incident the right headlight done the same while driving. Both headlights have turned off at the same time while driving. It seems like this is a wide spread issue with this year of Prius. The dealership will currently only replace the bulbs at a cost to me of $1250. 00. The bulbs don't seem to be the problem, considering they work most of the time. If you can turn the lights off and back on again and the light(s) return to working state, its seems to be an electrical controller board problem.
