1 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2012 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/16/2020

Approximately 2 months ago I started having problems when starting the car in the mornings or after the vehicle sat for a while. When starting the vehicle it would shake and run rough but would run good after it warmed up. I took it to my local Toyota dealer and a manifold and a sensor was ordered by the dealer. The next day I went back to the dealer to have the parts installed. I sat in the waiting area for over 2 hours only to be told it was not the manifold and sensor. After a scope was used to diagnose the problem. This time I was told I either had a leaking gasket or a cracked engine head. This Prius v only has 94245 miles on the engine. It has always had regular maintenance at the Toyota dealer. The dealership quoted me to replace the engine at $6000. 00. I have never had a vehicle with less than 100,000 miles usage to need a new rebuilt engine especially a Toyota product. I am very disappointed in Toyota. This was a known concern on Toyota's part and it was not properly addressed in a recall, now I am left holding a very expensive bag. How many other unsuspecting, customers will you lose besides me.

2 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2011 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/10/2020

Loud rattle, shaking in motor area. Was found to be a head gasket leak. Using a lot of antifreeze and white smoke out the tail pipe. While idle or in motion and while gas engine is running. Started intermittently at first and very short, eg. For a second or two, then got louder, more often and lasted longer. This car has 128,000 miles. This same issue is happening on my 2010 Prius with 250,000 miles. I researched this and it is a common place with gen 3 Prius cars. I can no longer drive either one of my Prius cars safely.

4 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/26/2018

Engine rattle/knocking noise on first morning start up on occasion. Car is parked outside in a driveway in los angeles, California. Previous dates unknown (maybe happened 4 other times). Log started 11/26/18 since the noise was really bad that day. 11/26/18 at 6 a. M. Car sat in driveway for 2 days. The noise was really bad, the check engine light came on. The next day the check engine light automatically came off. 1/22/19 at 6 a. M. Car sat in driveway for 2 days. The noise was bad but not as bad as 11/26/18. Check engine light did not come on. 2/1/19 at 6 a. M. Car sat in driveway overnight. Slight noise. Check engine light did not come on. I have seen several other complaints online. Some have said its the intake manifold. The dealer has requested I take my car in for the recall (recall no. 18v684) to see if it fixes the problem but I'm going to request they dig into this further. I have approximately 92,000 miles.

5 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2011 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/14/2011

Upon ice start up at times, there is a loud knocking noise emanating from engine compartment. Goes away after 10 seconds and car drives fine. Has occurred several times. Though there is a TSB issued, dealer would not fix unless issue is replicated despite showing them what my car did on video. Most noticeable after car was run for a very brief time hours before. Also notice the last few weeks, while driving vehicle, upon ice starting up, the engine is rough and the shift to ice is noticeable. Previously it was smooth. No codes have appeared and the car appears to run normal otherwise. I would like the dealer to fix the problem as described in 2 separate tsbs (engine mounts and intake manifold gasket).

6 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2003 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/05/2008

After a series of problems with the Prius engine the local Toyota dealer informed me that I needed to have the car's transmission replaced. Naturally the vehicle is no longer covered by its warranty. Back ground: 2003 Prius, odometer reading 116,289. On 12/22/2008, I started the car and the check engine light appeared. I was towed to the dealership. The dealership informed me that the gasoline engine shut down and the battery ran out of power. The dealership could not reproduce the problem. On 12/27/2008, I started the car and the check engine light appeared again. I had the car towed to the Toyota dealer. The dealership discovered oil in the intake manifold as per a TSB. The dealership did not charge me for part of the repairs. On 01/04/2008, I was driving when an intermittent grinding noise began on both braking and acceleration. I found that the noise disappeared if I braked and accelerated extremely gently. I immediately drove to the dealership. When I went to the dealership, I was told that the problem could be as simple as a shim in the braking system that may have slipped out of position. I authorized an estimate of $52. 52. The following day, a service person of the dealership called and told me that the brakes were fine but that the problem could be resolved by changing the sparkplugs. I orally authorized an estimate of about $150. 00 (I don?t remember the exact amount. ). The service rep called me later that day (1/5) and explained that my problem wasn't?t really the sparkplugs but that the car's transmission needed to be replaced. The estimate for the parts and labor for this repair would be approximately $2,000. The service rep informed me on 1/6/2008 that a mistake was made and cost of the new transmission alone would be $5,000, with other parts, labor, and the cost of a rental car, the final estimate for repair was around $7,000.
