Premature wear and crowning of tires due to manufacturing defect of rear axle. Can only be corrected by after market plastic shims installed at an expense of approximately $500 or over inflate tires to 50 psi and loose road traction or inflate tires to Toyota specifications for premature wear due to toe out defect.

2 Rear Suspension problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/20/2009

The contact owns a 2008 Saturn vue. During routine service, a technician noticed that both rear tires exhibited uneven tire wear. The rear tires were replaced. However he speculated that the rear suspension system caused the tread to abnormally wear. The failure mileage was 15,325. The current mileage was 15,400. Updated 3/8/10 updated 06/11/10.

3 Rear Suspension problem of the 2003 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/21/2004

Bridgestone tires supplied by manufacturer had began delaminating along inside rim because rear alignment on 2003 Toyota Prius was incorrect. One tire was near complete failure when discovered. The question does the weight of the battery pack (placed immediately over the rear axle) cause the rear suspension to misalign in normal daily driving, which in turn places extreme wear on the inside of the rear tires? because the wear is on the inside of the tire, the problem may not be discovered before a blowout occurs.

4 Rear Suspension problem of the 2002 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/01/2001

2002 Toyota Prius rear alignment customer states that the rear tires cannot be aligned due to the construction of the vehicle* upon taking the vehicle on the date of deliver the consumer noticed the swaying of the rear end of the car and the rear tires were be severely worn. The dealer tried numerous times to fix the defect but to no avail, the tires would deteriorating every 3,000 miles. The consumer stated the dealer informed him there was nothing that they could do. The consumer was told to return to the dealer every 3,000 miles to inspect the tires. That task was done up until November 2006 until the consumer was informed yet again to purchase 4 new tires. The consumer took the vehicle to another dealer in February who informed him the rear axle was bent causing the defect. The consumer has since tried to contact the original dealer and manufacturer who informed him to pursue the dealer or take it to a government agency.
