Took vehicle in for new tires and alignment at 47,302 miles on the odometer. I was informed that a camber bolt was completely seized and that the right rear control arm busing was bad/missing. My car is just over a year old and has been vibrating for a while at interstate speeds. I thought it was a belt broken in a tire as they were reaching the time to be changes but weren't at the wear marks. I did have one tire that the inside was worn and starting into the belt most likely because of the misalignment from the bad/missing right rear bushing. With the car being so new and used mostly on the interstate, I felt this may be a saftey issue for failing bushings on suspension components.

Abs and brake lights suddenly turned on and brake pedal effectiveness changed dramatically. When pressing brake pedal the brakes barely work now. Just got quoted $5161 for abs accumulator repair, $2336 for major suspension concern, and total $8386 estimate for repairs from Toyota service department. I see many similar complaints from Toyota owners online, this seems to be a common issue with Prius vehicles. The kelly blue book value is only $5450 for trade-in and $7318 for sale to private owner, so the repair doesn’t even seem worthwhile given a replacement would be cheaper, and the abs failure happens so frequently in this vehicle, and could happen again.

The contact owns a 2013 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that while reversing, there was an abnormally loud sound coming from the vehicle. The contact exited the vehicle and performed an inspection of the vehicle. While inspecting the vehicle, the contact became aware that the passenger’s side rear wheel was touching the frame of the wheel well. Additionally, the wheel was leaning inward. The dealer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with a fractured rear wheel assembly. The contact was informed that the rear wheel assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was being repaired. In addition, the contact was informed that the failure was a known failure. The contact was informed by the independent mechanic that two similar vehicles had been repaired with similar failures, within the week. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 179,000.
The rear axle beam broke off near the passenger side rear wheel. The wheel flops around and the vehicle is totally unsafe to drive.

2012 Prius in very good condition with 180k miles- only 12 years old. Driving on back roads (thankfully) and the drivers side rear wheel compelely fell off while driving. I was doing about 30 mph and felt like there was a flat tire so I was in the process of pulling over when the whole rear assembly snapped. The wheel hit the rear quarter of the car and bounced about 100 feet down the road. I could have been on the highway and this could have been fatal I believe. Very, very scary. As can be seen in attached photos the issue was rust from the inside. This is very concerning since there was no way for me to know this was an issue. I could have been killed or killed someone else. I believe Toyota needs to look into this since there are other Prius' out there the same thing happened to on this very thread. Although this is a massachusetts car I have owed it since 25k miles and have maintained it impeccably. I always have the undercarriage cleaned after driving on salty roads. Safety inspection was current- only done the month before. Had that wheel bearing replaced about 2 weeks before the incident and the reputable mechanic reported no issues. There was no warning except for maybe a minute before it happened- the car was vibrating like I had a flat tire. The damage repair estimate on this was $8500. Catastrophic fail Toyota. Is this a rust issue like the tacoma, tundra, and sequoia?????.
On 07-June-2024 @14:47 my 2012 Toyota Prius suffered a catastrophic failure. I was attempting to back my 2012 Toyota Prius vehicle a few meters back into my driveway while turning slightly. This was a very slow speed backup. Suddenly, the rear passenger side wheel collapsed inward, and rendered the vehicle unmovable. A video of the incident is attached for viewing the vehicle has low mileage approximately 58,000 miles. The vehicle is in excellent condition and the service records provide evidence of proper maintenance, often at Toyota dealership. This vehicle was originally from cape cod massachusetts and perhaps suffered adverse effects from ocean salt air? although the rest of the vehicle does not show any significant rusting. . I am impressed by the engineering of the Prius hybrid technology, but this point of failure seems to be an engineering weakness.
Today 05/25/2024 noticed a slight camber on the right rear wheel. Jacked up the car and removed the right rear to take a closer look and realized the rear axle/subframe was splitting in half along the weld point. If I hadn't caught this today and my daughter was driving it I'm confident she or others would have been killed or severely injured since most of her driving is highway related. The part that is blowing my mind is the vehicle was at the dealership twice in the last month and no one noticed when on a lift. The car is now permanently on jack stands till it can be repaired. I'm not sure it will even hold together to get onto a tow truck. I will not attempt driving do to safety specially others. I witnessed a tire go through a vehicle resulting in the death of someone.
Vehicle was in for routine service at dealer. Dealer reported "rear axle beam starting to have heavy rust build up metal is getting thin. Will need replacement in the future, approx $3,000. 00 depending on what is needed at that time. " this is the first warning we have received, the vehicle has gotten Toyota dealer service since new every 5,000 miles. Since we learned of this defect, we have discovered 6 similar reports in our small town including 2 actual axel failures while the vehicle was being driven. These were all Priuses and Prius vs in the 2013 and 2014 model years. This seems to be a design failure and poses serious risks as axle failure at highway speed seems a formula for death or serious injury.
This vehicle needs to take off from the consumers due doesn't drives properly has rear major damage also left side rear door they didn't did good job also the hybrid battery shows at the dashboard in n out engine check light. The rear frame bounce by the side it's unsafe. Car time dealership at ontario, CA don't care be careful also sold me with stolen CA license plates this dealership, it's scam. I didn't know like to scam consumers since 12-13-2023 got it and return it due refuse to fix it right and; the bank cancel the transaction global lending services by rose brown general manager ext 51033 at the telephone the bank 877-538-2071.
Driving 2013 Prius v multiple lights suddenly came up on dash brake system, abs, master warning, slip indicator safety put at severe risk while driving. These defective parts installed were never disclosed, or notified, by Toyota and put in severe risk for consumers to drive as a national recall was never issued. Toyota was called since this and refused to fix. Toyota acknowledges parts are defective yet refutes liability despite acknowledgment of defective parts. Defective parts never disclosed to me by any entity of Toyota including dealerships/corporate despite willful knowledge of national defective parts in model 2013 Prius v. This is a liable safety situation that can cause irreparable human life damage.
Lost steering on car while driving. Shop noted right control arm completely corroded through and broken axle. Entire undercarriage rusted and corroded. Available for inspection. Sudden loss of steering is a risk factor for serious injury or death. Problem has been looked at by two independent service centers who have agreed on problem. Has not been inspected by manufacturer, whom I have contacted over 8 times regarding this issue, or by any other party. There were no warning signs or symptoms prior to failure.

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Prius. While receiving an oil change by an independent mechanic, the contact was informed that there was a large crack to the engine cradle located on the undercarriage. The contact was informed by the mechanic that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The contact notified the manufacturer of the failure and was informed that the VIN was not under recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 159,000.

Rear shock nut comes loose and Toyota has issued TSB 0144-16, to tighten the nut. This is common among Prius. This must be a recall otherwise it is dangerous if the shock become loose. Initially the dealer told me to replace shocks but fortunately I found out about TSB and the delear fixed it free.

Unknown squeaking at the back, none of the mechanics was able identify the sound on the back seat . . . Oil burning, bulbs burning so often.
Maybe related to takata recall: we did not receive a recall, however our car skid into a tree and had significant front end damage, however no airbags deployed. Was going 25 mph on a suburban residential st during a mixed snow/sleet storm. Slight curve and slightly downhill. The brakes were not applied as they could have made it worse. Car sped up into the skid totalling the car with $11,000 damage. We have been given several opinions that the velocity necessary to cause the damage should have triggered the airbag sensors. Car hit the middle of the bumper and perhaps missed the sensors? no report was filed by the police as accident was caused by the road conditions/weather not driver error. I have photos I can send in a few days.

Vehicle stall when hybrid system kicks in and shake, very dangerous considering the car is quiet.
2016 Toyota Prius VIN#jtdkarfu6g3010626 I purchased this car in July, 2017 and I am having problems with a clicking or popping sound under the vehicle on both the right and left, rear and front. I have taken my car in for repairs 3 times and the Toyota repair shop can find nothing wrong. The clicking and popping noise is getting worse and I am very concerned about the safety of this car. I hope for the safety of the Toyota customers that the Toyota corporation is taking these complaints seriously. I also have a complaint regarding the windshield. While driving a pebble hit the windshield and in a and within 5 minutes the line spread and a windshield repair company told me that it could not be repaired. There is a maze of cracks covering the windshield. If the car was involved in a collision, I feel that this would a disaster because of the substandard quality. I have purchased seven Toyotas in the last 20 years and have never experienced these type of problems. The paint on this vehicle is also very poor quality, there are areas where the paint has come off and gray areas appear. I would like to know why there are no recalls and if these complaints are being seriously investigated. I suppose that when lives are lost because of substandard windshields or other problems associated with this vehicle, the national highway traffic safety administration and the Toyota corporation will address these issues.
Brake actuator keeps activating every 10 seconds. The cars abs, traction control, and brakes error lights have all come on. Brakes are compromised in some manner which can pose serious safety issues while driving.
Rear suspension creaking and feels soft in the rear. While driving or going onto a driveway the rear suspension creaks and pops. Driving normally the rear end seems to bob around often and feels super soft.

Car in two accidents over two years body was not properly welded back to the frame! brakes were not properly realigned neither was the steering column transmission bands were not operating and would not shift and numerous other parts for leakage from brake lines to transmission lines all lines were broken and so are the seals on them!.
I bought a 2014 Toyota Prius c 10-07-2017 from carvana with less than 30,000 miles. With 2 new tires in the front bridgestone ecopia 175/65 r15. It wobbles at speeds above 50 mph and sloppy steering the road was dry. Well at that time the the car was still under warrant with carvana so if I change my mind about it I could get another car. Searched the web for similar complaints and found a few. So we took the car to a place that sold bridgestone tires to replace the rear tires that were original but goodyear brand same size. So now we have 4 tires the same and quess what happen the same wobbly driving and sloppy steering at 50 mph. So we took the car back to the shop. The mechanic said I guess that is why they put the 2 new tires in the front to corrrect the problem but what you need after my test drive is a 4 wheel alignment. So I said go ahead and do it. During the process the alignment mechanic guy said the front passed but the rear failed. So they called Toyota dealership and asked if they were special shims to fix the rear alignment. The Toyota dealership said there are no parts for that because that car model does not require a rear alignment. The c in Toyota Prius means c is for city driving only. We were stunned. I said I knew they had a reason why they got rid of the car but can you fix it ? the mechanic said it is a possible factory defect and we see some of those sometimes but I think we can fix it and solve your problems with that car. We can use some shims that are made for a different type of Toyota car and see if we can get it in proper alignment. I said I am willing to gamble on your expertise go ahead and do it. It is still under warranty with carvana but I do like the hatchback car. After the work was done the test drive proved the success and the problem was gone. Oh and by the way it drives great on the highway and I still own it.
Under t-sb-0144-16. Alot of 2016 Toyota Prius owners are complaining a click noise from rear of vehicle while driving. I confirmed through Prius chat under technical service bulletin 0144-16 that clicking noise is from the support nuts on the rear shocks. I attempted to have it fix as a recall. The Toyota service repair in san bruno California said my basic warranty expired & they refused to fix it even though the issue is a potential safety-related defects and there are adequacy of existing safety complaint with many Prius customers via Prius chat/TSB.
When breaking while traveling over bumps/ripples on the road or over rough road conditions such as potholes or roadwork, the vehicle feels as though the breaks are skipping or failing. This has occurred multiple times under the same or similar conditions. There is a sensation while attempting to stop, that the car is not going to stop in time or that you have lost control of the vehicle's ability to stop safely.
The car's hid headlamp just goes out sporadically. So far, it is "solved" by turning headlamps off and on again; but it repeats itself. The front right strut was broken shortly after we bought the car (55 days ago) and needed replacement. We replaced strut.
I backed out of a carport and placed my car in acceleration and it picked up speed and then hit a wall at an apartment complex.

Traveling straight ahead, ~30mph on city street , front tire (michelin dt008-35670-mi, 185/65r15) blew for unknown reason. Car swerved to right into utility pole, removing right front wheel, wheel connections, fender, headlight. (car "totaled" by insurer. ) steering wheel airbag activated. Driver (sole occupant) suffered fractures of right hand, wrist, 3 ribs and sternum, apparently due to impact of airbag. Driver was wearing belt/harness.
I was driving down the road and the tire blew out causing me to hit the center divider on the 101 on the driver side front tire which caused the cars ass end to also get scuffed up as will.
Iive had my Prius from 4-14 to the present 2016. I keep having issues with the dealership I take it to for repairs. Bob smith in la crescenta CA. After mentioning and describing issues, the staff there says that unless the dash lights up with a message and gives a code, they cant fix it. So in order for them to look into it any further than me telling them dash light is nec. Ive told them about the ac noise from the first say I took the car in to grt services at 33k. They say they dont hear or see anything. My ac compressor sounds like ita going ro explode when ac is on. Brakes have been extremely diff. To explain because of terminology. They seem to lose their power when being pressed and abs seems to malfuncion?? so they drive it and tell me its nohing I need to worry about and will be fixed when changed. Change brakes and the prob persists. Not only abs but firestone says my hardware has issues as well. I brinf it to the attention of the staff and nothing seems to get donw about it. . . My odo. Speedom is/was off +2 mph. My weather seals have been stripped and ripped off the vehicle which now causes water leaks from every crevise. . And the biggest two of all my complaints are 1- hybrid batt. Fan never worked and I wasnt told. . . Hyb batt has nwvwr worked properly (drains way too fast when stopped at a light or in traff) along with the heat created by the batt and the engine that fill up the cabin and qwill have the temp raised upwards of 90+ on a 75 deg day. 2- the ecu's ipm's (or something like that) has not been calib. Or updated. Even received coverage stickers from toy hedqrts stating full coverage if a. B. C. (listing of problems or malfuncions) I desctibe thw exact same symptoms to them and get the same respons"no code, no fix" help and ps I just checked the VIN onlne 4my veh & it says a diff pakage w/a bunch of extras that I never got upon purchae???_hmmm??.

I was inching into a grocery store parking spot in my new, perfectly maintained 2015 Toyota Prius when I experienced unintended acceleration. My vehicle shot forward and in a second had crashed over a cement curb, through a flower bed, and was stopped - despite my desperately jamming the brake - only by smashing into a brick wall. The suspension and steering on the car is now severely damaged, and the car cannot be driven. I am horrified: I could have been seriously injured and worse, hit/hurt another person (or at the very least severely damaged property). What if I had chosen a parking spot in front of a group of children?!! they cloud have been killed! the car is now at a Toyota service center waiting for Toyota corporate to "decide" if a car accelerating into a brick wall of its accord is a "design flaw" that it will pay to fix. I believe that what may have happened is that the computer system that controls the throttle/acceleration experienced a software bug which threw the car forward. In fact, Toyota was forced pay out over one billion dollars in fines last year (2014) by the us government for this exact issue - but apparently it didn't fix its 2015 line b/f letting it go to market. I purchased the Toyota Prius because it was received top safety and reliability ratings. Only now do I learn Toyota has a history of hiding unintended acceleration bugs in its car designs for years - and blaming owners for its recklessly unsafe and thereby unethical auto designs (no, this wasn't caused by a stuck floor mat). I am furious. No one can afford to be blamed for vehicular manslaughter due to manufacturer negligence. Even if Toyota claims to have fixed my Prius, its word clearly means nothing and I do not trust the company. I will be getting rid of the car ASAP and searching for a safer model.
While inching slowly into a parking spot, vehicle suddenly accelerated at full speed to jump over the parking barrier. Wheels were turned slightly to right, so car veered right and stopped as it high-centered on the barrier, just behind front wheels. No injuries- driver & child in back were buckled. Witnessed by many pedestrians who ran to assist. One witness said the same thing happened in her Prius, but Toyota was useless to help. In months since the incident, Toyota has been terrible at responding in any helpful way. The black box recorder shows nothing, of course, since it was a slow impact without airbag deploy. Most interestingly, the NHTSA has no info of this incident, which I'm reporting today only because I noticed in the owner manual on rear page, small print, some info about reporting safety defects for u. S. Owners. . . But at least 20 Toyota personnel, insurance adjustors, repair facilities and sales team members never said anything about such a report. Hence my assumption that most of these incidents are not reported to gov't unless fatalities occur.
