My windshield had a very minor chip which resulting in a crack across the windshield. This seems to be an disproportionate damage to the windshield suggesting a structural design defect.

While driving from tucson to phoenix on us route 10 at around 65 mph on the way to southern California on August 24, 2018, in 100 degree f. Heat, a crack began in the lower drivers side of the windshield and was a foot long within seconds. By the time I reached home at 5:00pm, the crack had grown horizontally to more than two feet in length. I have avoided washing the windshield with cold water, or at all, and if the crack has lengthened further in the more moderate temperatures, I have not noticed. There is no obvious sign of a rock impact. When the sun is a the wrong angle, there is a distractingly bright glare from the crack.
Summary: have owned my Prius prime for eight months and have needed to repair one windshield chip, replace my windshield once, and currently have another crack that cannot be repaired. Details: purchased my Prius prime Dec 10, 2017. On Dec 20, 2017, got a chip in my windshield while driving to work along the local highway and was able to get it repaired same-day. In June 2018, got another chip in my windshield and the crack spread beyond repair almost immediately. Started the process to have it replaced and it took approximately six weeks and three appointments with safelite before they had the correct windshield with the correct parts. According to safelite, Toyota had changed the design of the windshield and the new design was on backorder. Paid my $500 deductible for this replacement. On August 8, 2018, just a few weeks after replacing the windshield, I got another chip that also spread beyond repair immediately. As of this writing, I have not yet replaced the windshield for the second time. After doing research, I found there is a class action lawsuit, filed in March 2018, related to these defective windshields. Attached are receipts from safelite showing the chip repair, payment of my deductible, and pictures of the current crack.

I owned a 2008 Prius with 273,453 miles when I traded it for a 2018 Prius on 3/15/18. My 2008 never had the windshield replaced; meanwhile, the 2018 has been replaced once and the 2nd is now cracked within 2 months of replacement. On 8/7/18 I was driving in a single lane road with no vehicles ahead or in the oncoming direction when I heard a pop. Within 5 minutes a crack began at the base of the windshield and extended about 9 upwards and towards the passenger side by the end of the day. Next morning the crack was 17 long, and by the 3rd day the crack was 26. After that the crack seems to stabilize. On 10/9/18 I was driving on I-95n heard another pop and a 2nd crack began to form. There were no vehicles in front of me when I heard a pop. An additional crack started that curved from the driver side and extended 14 from the base of the windshield 3 from the old crack towards the driver side. The 2nd crack affected my vision so I had have it replaced immediately. On 11/2/18 I had the oem windshield replaced for $250 (deductible) plus $477 (Toyota camera recalibration). On 12/19/18 I heard a pop while at a stop sign and the new windshield developed a crack from the base of the glass extending upwards 4 then curved towards the passenger side for another 7. 5 by the end of the day. The next day the crack curved up and to the right side for another 7. 25. By the 3rd day, it grew another 12 upwards. On 1/29/19 a second crack formed near the initial crack at 3 higher from the base. This crack extended for 12 towards the driver side. So now I am faced with replacing the windshield again; incurring the costs and inconvenience. Given the fact there were no vehicle around when the cracks have repeated appeared I feel that this is a manufacturers defect and not a factor of my driving.

While driving approximately 30 mph on a surface street, I heard a loud noise and a crack appeared at the right edge of the windshield, advancing leftward up and then across the windshield and into my line of sight in the driver's seat. I did not see anything hit the windshield and have never heard a sound like that in nearly 50 years of driving. After researching replacement windshields, I discovered that they are back ordered because so many Prius owners are having to replace windshields. In fact, a class action lawsuit related to these defective windshields was filed this March. . Read more...
I reported issues with this car in 2018. Clicking sounds under the car which is still happening, peeling paint on exterior and inside door areas, substandard windshield that spread in a very unusual pattern when hit by a small rock. The NHTSA id number that was assigned to these complaints is 11139280. None of these problems have been addressed. There are other owners that have experienced the same problems, apparently their issues have not been addressed. These problems should have been sent by you to the Toyota corporation, but apparently was not. I have owned many Toyota vehicles and have not experienced these problems. I also own a 2012 Toyota Prius which I drive when I when I am traveling on the interstate, because I feel that the clicking noises on the 2016 Toyota Prius is a safety issue that seems to be coming from the steering section underneath the car. When traveling the speed limit on the on interstate highways, what would be the outcome if the steering mechanisms underneath the car did not work properly. It is a shame that this safety issue has not been addressed by you, and it is also a shame that I have to drive my older Toyota at these times to feel safer when driving.
Owner of a 2016 Toyota Prius 3 with advanced technology package: I'll preface this that I'm satisfied with most/if not all other aspects of the Prius (except entune. . . ). However, it seems there is a definite issue with windshields cracking. I was driving on the freeway at the start of roadtrip when I heard and barely saw a rock/pebble hit lower left drivers side section of the windshield. I instantly saw 1-2 inch diameter crack/chip appear. Over the next few hours I saw it grow and expand. Reading up on this it seems I'm not only one who's experiencing this issue. I don't know if its just the design or glass is under some higher stress. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the cameras and sensors, one has to go to Toyota service anyway to get the camera recalibrated. Oem glass does not appear to be cheap either!.
While driving on the highway in the rain at 55mph a very small pebble/bug struck the lower right windshield below the wiper. It was not very loud, but did create a crack in the windshield with a few minutes. Within a few days the crack has spread across the entire windshield.
Small rock chip caused windshield to crack all the way through across the entire windshield. I've been driving since I was 17 and never have had a windshield crack from a small rock chip, even the shop said he has seen a lot of this generation Prius coming in for replacements. Toyota has made a sub par windshield that isn't able to withstand anything. This glass is thin, and very unsafe. Now my windshield is cracked all the way across imparing my visibility.
I pulled into the car port and put my car in park. I then hear a pop sound and saw the small hatch window was spider web cracked completely across the entire length of the small window. I went out to inspect the rear window and it had cracked and fallen apart on the sides and part way across the top. A week earlier, I went to get in my car and saw a crack going across the front windshield that wasn't there the previous day. There was no signs of rock or other objects hitting the windshield causing it to crack.
While driving, with no other vehicle within 100 yards, an approximately 12 inch long crack appeared from the lower passenger side windshield. I did not have the radio on and did not hear or see anything strike the windshield. When I arrived at my destination I inspected the crack and saw no chip or other evidence that something struck the windshield. After a few hours I came back to leave and noticed that the crack had grown even longer. I assume from being parked in direct sunlight, although it was only about 80f degrees. I have always been proud of Toyota's durability and have owned everything from the Prius to the tundra. I've even gotten many of my friends and family members to switch to Toyota. I now have to wonder if Toyota has started to "cheap out" like many other manufacturers. I am especially disappointed at the fact that this appears to be a "fit and finish" defect. Either the windshield must be cheap and thin, or the quality of workmanship must be lacking. A quick google search revealed that this is a disproportionately common problem with the new 4th gen Toyota Prius and that the windshield has been back ordered. To add insult to injury, the new Toyota safety sense sensors must be re-calibrated with the replacement windshield, which can add up to $500 to the total cost of repair! I cannot recommend the new 4th gen Prius if it comes with such a defective windshield. This is certainly a safety issue and is a very expensive repair. I wish I knew about this problem before buying!.
Prius windshield is prone to crack when traveling on highway. I was traveling on highway when a tiny rock hit the lower right side of my windshield. Then I could see the tiny crack getting longer until it nearly reached the middle in a matter of two minutes. Prius owner should not have to put up with this expensive and dangerous defect.

In early or mid may 2018, when my new 2017 Toyota Prius prime had less than or approx. 10,000 miles on it and when I was getting into my car one sunny morning in my gated parking lot, I first noticed a very thin vertical crack (circa 2-3 inches) on my windshield - starting at the very bottom of the windshield below my wipers. The crack was located in the middle of the glass, I. E. Between driver & passenger. The car was stationary, and had sat in my parking spot for the last day or two, and then on this may morning, there was a crack. No chip mark had existed prior to this, and no rock had hit it when I drove it last. There was no large tree near my parking spot, plus nothing was on the windshield when I got to my car that morning, so nothing fell on it. In less than a week, the damage on the glass grew larger (6 inches) and was spreading. I took my car in for 10,000 mile service per Toyotacare, but Toyota denied warranty coverage for the repair or replacement of its fragile Prius prime's windshield, despite it being within the warranty period and the defect manifesting itself when the car was stationary. Within the next few days, the crack grew and spread larger, eventually turning 90 degrees and expanding horizontally. In late may or early June 2018, I replaced the windshield via safelite auto. The total balance of the first replacement was about $800 - I. E. The replacement cost was about $400, but I was told more money was needed to properly fix camera (adas) problems caused by replacing the windshield. In June 2018, the new windshield cracked, almost 1 or 2 weeks after I just had it replaced. While driving on the highway, I noticed a tiny object hit my windshield. I contacted the dealer. In August 2018, the dealership said it knew of no problems with the 2017 Toyota Prius windshields.

Driving on highway in moderate and heavy rain or snow affects the windshield shade and visibility to see the roadway clearly. The shade of the windshield is dull grey until driving on city streets or getting off the highway. Car dealers had no answers or solutions in the past.

Windshield has cracked in drive way for no reason. Now has spider webbed across windshield obstructing my view. Called to repair and found out many people are reporting the same problem. Even after they fix and replace new windshield I=its cracking again. New windshield is $600plus install and re calibration im looking at $1300. Please help us customers because windshield is defective!.
Traveling at approximately 35 mph, a small rock thrown up by oncoming traffic hit the lower left edge of the windshield, a large crack extending more than halfway across the drivers side windshield appeared. This appears to be a common issue with newer Toyota hybrids. Toyota dealership has quoted $1500 to replace windshield and re-calibrate safety equipment.
Driving 60 mph on interstate a piece of debris hit my windshield. The piece was so small I didn't even see it hit the windshield. The piece did pretty significant damage to the windshield and it spidered out in all different directions, larger than a quarter. My concern is that I have been in other vehicles and had debris hit the windshield the same situation that is larger and just barley put a nick in the windshield. Ive read on complaints about 16' and 17' models having this issue as well and it doesn't seem like Toyota is addressing the issue. I am worried about the structural integrity of my windshield.
Small rock hit windshield on passenger side while driving on I 25 interstate from rio rancho towards santa fe. . . . Overnight crack developed and spread 6 inches or so. . . Subsequently crack quickly spread across center of windshield to drivers side.
While at highway speeds I was struck by a rock. Windshield cracked. Had to have it replaced. Costly and now I am told it will cost another $400+ to have it calibrated. I am now reading that the Prius is prone to windshield breaks and the cost of recalibration is both expensive and the dealers don't like doing it so the time to get it done is excessive. I now worry if safety features are compromised and it is dangerous to drive.
Windshield cracked while driving down the highway.
Noticed two small cracks in the windshield, center area close to bottom of windshield. Did not notice sound or sight of an impact, but two days later, cracks had spread left and right about 14 inches either side of original site of cracks.
Friday January 12, 2018, drove vehicle 3. 5 hours on highway during period of declining temperatures- 34 to 29 fahrenheit, with snow beginning hour 2. 5. Operated front defrost continuously for entire 3. 5 hour trip with cabin temp between 72 and 75f. Made 2 stops, 10 minutes each- one at 1. 5 hours and one at 3 hours. Parked overnight in home garage at end of trip. Air temp declined to 19f overnight. Backed car out of garage in morning and windshield cracked at centerline of front defrost vent. Crack has continued to expand to points almost exactly 5 inches beyond each end of defrost vent, then stopped expanding. Passenger side (right side) crack is aligned exactly with centerline of defrost vent. At point 5" outboard of vent, passenger side crack turns down and extends to bottom edge of windshield. Driver (left side) crack is parallel to vent on line 3" below vent, then turns up, crosses vent, and parallels vent 3" above vent to termination of crack at 5" outboard of vent. Nothing impacted windshield during trip and windshield was not cracked at end of trip. Engineering defect- inadequate glass strength- unable to use defroster for extended periods. Crack created by stress from localized thermal expansion- aligned with heat source of defroster vent at lower middle region of windshield. This is first extended use of defroster in car- purchased may 2018. Currently has 21,800 miles.
Topic: Prius cracked windshield I have a 2017 Prius purchased new about a month ago with about 1500 miles driven. 2 days ago, when I pulled to a gas station to pump gas, I noticed a small cracks on upper right hand along the edge of windshield. Yesterday, the cracks developed into 12 in. Long. Checked thickness between fingers, it is about same as that of a drinking glass, very thin for a car. Quick check on internet revealed this is very common issue with Prius 2016 or newer. Called Toyota and was informed this is not a manufacture defect. I've own several cars from Toyota and Honda with no issue with rock hitting. Please check investigate this issue to see if it is a design mistake in pursue of weight reduction. Thank you.
Topic: 2017 Prius windshield cracked. I have 2017 Prius purchased new about a month ago with 1500 miles driven. 2 days ago, when I pumped gas, I noticed a small crack in upper right hand side along the edge. I don't remember getting hit by an object while driving. Yesterday the cracks gotten longer. Checked thickness between my finger, it looks the same as that of a drinking glass. A quick search on internet revealed that it is a very common issue with 2016 or newer model. Called Toyota and was informed that it is a manufacture defect. I have owed other vehicles made by Toyota and Honda that were hit with flying object with no problem. Even with crack, it shouldn't have spiraled out that fast and large. Please investigate to see if it is design mistake in pursue of weight reduction. Thank you.
I had previous problems when I first bought my Prius where I received 2 cracks on my windshield within a week of owning the car. I never heard a rock hit my car. I reported it here and Toyota called me to replace my windshield so they could keep my old one for quality control. I was fine with this but just today I go out to my car and see a 6 inch crack that started from the bottom of the windshield that wasn't there before and I didn't hear a rock hit it either. I feel like my Prius windshield problems will never ever end.
I was on the interstate going 70 miles an hour in the left lane. I wanted to change to the right lane, put on my turn signal, checked both mirrors, and started to pull over when a horn blew, I did not see a car in the right lane as the Prius has a terrible blind spot. This has happened a few times. Not good I missed hitting the vehicle be mere inches.

The contact owns a 2014 Toyota Prius. Without warning, the front passenger side glass window fractured. The vehicle was not diagnosed by a dealer or an independent mechanic. The contact replaced the part due to the failure. The manufacturer was notified and stated that this was not a known issue. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was not available.
A small chip in front windshield and develop a large crack quickly.
The problem appears at night, and is very dangerous on curving mountain roads which I drive often. It is a four lane road, often hwy 17. As the ambient light reduces, as there are fewer cars around me, the windshield darkens from top to bottom, and leaves me with perhaps only 10 inches at the bottom I can see through. I cannot see very far in front of me, to see where a curve goes, what is on the road, or how much room I have around me. I have been told it is the headlights that provide reduced lighting. The dealer told me there is nothing they can do, that I should turn on my brights, regardless of oncoming traffic. It is very dangerous.
I had very small windshield crack while I was driving on 10 frwy covina CA , I didn't notice anything hit my windshield was very hot day just heard ting and I shaw crack but within a day was very long about 2ft crack . I took longo Toyota at el-monte they said it don't cover by dealer or Toyota company so they give me $1265 est. Cost to fix it. It was my 2016 Toyota Prius miles 17k only and under factory warranty another problem with 2016 Prius is body color popup so easy it just comeup so so easy look like they just paint so easy . . . I have so bad experience with Prius car feel like I just wast my 30k for just piece of shit.
While in motion on a highway at 65 mph the driver's side front window shattered. Most of the pieces of the glass fell onto the driver's lap, but pieces also landed on the passenger's side and in the back seat behind the driver. It is unknown why the glass shattered. No object was found in the car that could have shattered it.
Vehicle was stationary sitting in driveway. First crack started and continues to spread. Second crack started 3 weeks after the first. Windshield replacement supposedly on backorder. The car is typically parked in a parking garage during the workweek and either in my driveway or garage. The car is not even 2 years old. To replace windshield also means having to recalibrate for side and back up mirrors to function properly which is just as costly as having to pay for the windshield.
Just bought my 2017 Toyota Prius not over 4 months and my windshield have 1 large cracked and a tinny chipped on it. As I was driving on the highway cracked when a tiny rock hit the upper right side I could see the crack getting longer until it nearly reached the middle. I am very worry about the quality of the windshield by the 2017 Toyota Prius.
I was driving on I-40w when I got a rock chip on my wind shield. The next day while driving I noticed a crack in my windshield, not associated with the rock chip, starting on the left bottom of the windshield and curving up to the right for about 6". This crack kept progressing daily and now extends approx. 3/4 of the way across the windshield. The windshield for my car is on national backorder without any idea as to how long it will take to get it in. I went online and it appears from the number of people discussing it, it appears to be widespread and probably the reason for the back order. With the number of complaints I've breadths should be a recall. As a side note whenever my car's VIN # is run it comes up as a 2016 Toyota Prius c not a 2016 Prius four touring. The tech at the auto glass shop told me that this has been a recurring problem.
