Headlights of 2006 Prius go on and off at will. I reported this to Toyota dealer and was told that they had to change both bulbs. The intensity of the bulbs are normal when they come back on and I have never owned a car where the bulbs recover on their own. It appears to be a wiring problem of some kind and Toyota's solution of changing the bulbs does not seem to be a reasonable solution. Also the one year guarantee of an expensive repair does not seem reasonable. The Toyota website shows hundreds of complaints for the same condition.

2008 Toyota Prius (touring model) -- driver side hid headlight began to fail in sept 2009. Became more frequent as time elapsed (would occur 3+ times during 30 minute trip). Turning lights off and back on temporarily resolved issue, but driver bulb would eventually fail again. Resulted in reduced visibility and potential blind spot for driver in front of vehicle. Researched online - suspected ecu. Contacted Toyota corporate around December 2009. Was advised that ecu was not the problem - bulb repair suggested. Dealer diagnostic suggested. Did not go to deal to spend $100 to tell me a light bulb should be replaced. Received notice Jan 2010 that symptoms matching mine was due to headlight reaching end of life. Ordered and attempted to replace bulbs in Jan 2010. Did not bring to Toyota as cost to replace bulbs was at least 6x more that "do it yourself". Attempt to replace bulbs resulted in mixed success. Was able to get both hid headlights replaced and functioning (after passenger side or driver side would not remain on consistently). Tested high beams - after high beams were disengaged both headlights went out, but headlight switch remained engaged. Disconnected and reconnected wiring. Only passenger side bulb functioned. Afraid to use high beams and no faith in headlights. Reluctant to spend hundreds of dollars to have dealer change bulbs, same problem occur, and spend hundreds or 1,000+ dollars. Original bulbs retained and I will be putting them back in once weather is warmer. Strong belief that bulbs are not to blame and ecu or other electrical component is at fault. Dozens of similar issues reported online.

To date we have not had an incident, however I believe the failure of our headlight and the lack of Toyota to correctly identify and correct this problem is unacceptable. The failure occurs everyday while driving the vehicle. We were told by the dealership to replace the bulb. The cost of the repair is over $500. 00. After reading many complaints, the wiring or connection seems to be the problem, not the bulb.
Our 2005 Prius shut down on 07/15/06 while my wife was trying to get home that evening. She was 200 miles from the nearest Toyota dealer. The car needed to be towed from alamosa to pueblo. A complete car shutdown is a very serious safety hazard especially if you are a woman in a desolate road at night. The car has less than 35,000 miles. Toyota failed to completely reimburse all my cost. My wife had to stay in a motel that night and I incurred the cost of getting her home and then driving from denver again to retrieve the car. Along with the safety issue and toyatas' refusal to reimburse all my costs, has left me totally appalled with Toyota. The mass airflow sensor I am being told is the cause of the vehicle shut down.

I have a 2005 Toyota Prius. I got my car 8-23-2005 and on 10-13-2005 I was hit on the passenger side while making a left hand turn. The intersections was just after a traffic circle, signs was missing, it was raining, dusk and the person who hit me did not have her lights on and was driving too fast for conditions. My car stopped, and could not be restarted. It was towed. I called my insurance company and was sent to a repair facility. After several days they got my car, but because it would not start, towed it to a Toyota shop. It sat there for 10 days, until I called, then it was sent back to the repair shop. It took 6 more weeks for the car to be repaired. One delay was in getting the seat-belt, which was supposed to come with the seat, but did not. It had to be shipped from japan (I was told). After the repair was done, 9 weeks after the accident, the car would not start. It was towed to another Toyota dealership. Two weeks later, I am told that a wiring harness was the problem. This has to be shipped from japan, and the expected date of arrival is 1-11-2006. Meanwhile, I have not had my car for nearly 3 months. My insurance paid for 30 days of a rental car (I waited a week to get the rental car), then I paid for another 4 weeks. I have notified Toyota 2 times about this situation. I have called the dealership, where I have a "special" customer convenience card. This card only seems to be good for purchases, and not for actual assistance. I think Prius owners need to know that their cars can only be repaired at a few locations, and most dealerships can not repair them properly. Additionally, I think the car has a significant blinds pot, as I am frequently surprised by other cars suddenly appearing.
Appears to be a temporary engine stall at 68 miles per hour in carpool lane, warning light came on but disappeared right away and the car was fine again. But lots of car vibrations and jolting felt at the time.
New vehicle had master fault, check engine and other warning lights at odo reading 50, "repaired" faulted again. Replacement parts include cam sensors, computer boards, wiring harness and now "master computer board".
I have had problems with my 2001 peius for the past year with the engine stoping at freeway and local highway speeds. My car has now set at stanger Toyota in st. George for the past month with no cure for the problem. The dealership has installed a new inverter, traced all wiring, reset codes and still we have the same problem of the car quiting or going into stelth mode. The car is no longer reliable on trips over one hour. The problem has happened in high and low temp. Conditions. My dealership says their is nothing left for them to do and I will just have to keep driving the car and bringing it back to reset the warning lights. This is nuts!
Toyota should recall this car at once, it is unsafe, unrealiable and a disgrace to own. I have been a Toyota owner for the past 30 years and have always "loved my Toyotas" but the Prius is a nightmare, and I hope the nhts will investigate this on going matter with the Prius and push Toyota for a recall to fix this problem once and for all.

Have a 2004 Toyota Prius. Less than 40,000 miles on the car. Was driving on the freeway and it suddenly died for no reason. Toyota dealer said it was a computer malfunction and could not guarentee it would not happen again. Very upset about this as it is a new car I paid a lot of money for.

Dt; last summer was driving down highway at about 45-50 mph and one of the engines went out, and the car decelerated and finally stalled out. Parked by roadside ,and had to be towed to dealership. Serviceman did a computer correction, but did not record this because it happened at night. Again about 2 months ago the engine went out, car slowed, and would not restart. Had to be towed to dealership. The car was returned without explanation. Afraid this may happen again.
