1 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2023

Two days ago my car was driving perfectly on the highway. The oil pressure light turned on I turned off the highway immediately and put more oil in the car. At this point my car is consuming over a quart every week and I don't drive more than a couple of hundred miles every week. I've taken several longer trips with this car. I started the car back up after checking the oil level, started driving and the light didn't come back on. About 10 more miles down the road on the highway the oil pressure light the check engine light vsc light the four-wheel drive light appear. I go to an autozone and I get a code p0012. I've done lots of research and I've learned that this is all related to Toyota's well-known defective design and manufacturing of their engines. I have a 2az fe engine. I bought this car with 125,000 miles on it in 2020. It now has about 154,000 mi on it. I didn't know that the oil consumption was extreme until this point of research. Now my car is making a rattling sound most likely the engine needs to be replaced. Technically yes I can drive it but it will stall and probably light on fire if I do and this is dangerous. They had a TSB warranty extension in 2016 I believe. I did not own the car that time nor do I know if that car was even subjected to the extension notice. But it is well known engine can do this and the pistons fail around this mileage that my car has. It's out of warranty but I'm reading everywhere people having problems with this year's car and the other cars with this engine right now. There's a whole group of engines that are starting to fail because of these poorly designed pistons that can affect oil leakage. Not only wasting a precious resource but causing a very dangerous situation for drivers. This should be addressed by Toyota still I want them to fix my engine or replace it before I cause an accident that can lead to death. I'm choosing to not drive it right now but I don't have the luxury of a second car. I may have to drive it.

2 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/29/2022

2006 Toyota Rav4 with 2. 4 liter engine burning oil rapidly. Burning approximately 4 quarts of oil in 3,000 miles. Vehicle currently has 100,000 miles. Issue persists even though I maintain routine maintenance on the vehicle. Luckily no safety hazards have occurred yet, but there is a high risk for potential safety hazard. Vehicle has been inspected by 3 different mechanics. I have been told by 3 different mechanics that this is a common issue for cars with this year/engine. About 2,800 miles after high synthetic oil change the vehicle begins to sound like it is struggling to accelerate at low speeds and the check engine oil light will briefly turn on at random then go away. Light does not stay lit or continuously flicker.

3 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2021

Excessive oil consumption 1 1/2 quart oil every 600 miles.

4 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/27/2021

This 2006 Rav4 engine is known for its massive oil consumption due to the faulty piston rings. Always kept oil in it and had regular changes because of this issue. Checked the oil 2 days prior to the engine failure, and all was well. Driving down the hwy going around 70mph, the engine started to lose power and sound funny (high rpm sounds with no power), so I took my foot off the gas and coasted for a few seconds. Down to 50mph, I hit the gas pedal, and then a loud boom happened and car shook. Smoke from the engine, and then all the dash lights came on. Lost all power. Looked under the engine and a piston had blown a hole through the bottom of it. Needs new engine now. Mechanic inspected it and they documented with a picture. Thankfully I was not injured as that could have caused a serious wreck, especially if there was someone behind me. I've read about these engines being blown regularly online. Even some before 100k miles. No warnings before this happened.

Noticed at about 98,000 miles the vehicle was using more oil than expected. I now find after a dealer test that the vehicle is consuming oil at the rate of 2 quarts per 1200 miles. I feel that this is excessive and in spite of the fact that it is past the warranty period which was mostly kept quiet by Toyota I feel they should be responsible for all the repairs for a longer period of time to allow all the ones including myself an opportunity to get the repairs. Test was done on 12/22/2017.

20 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2015

When my car had just under 100k miles on it I started experiencing the following oil usage levels: •two oil changes ago the oil light came on between oil changes; oil did not register on the dipstick and it took approximately 4 quarts of oil before oil even registered on the dipstick. •one oil change ago I checked the oil after approximately 2k miles and oil did not register on the dipstick. It took approximately 3 quarts of oil before oil registered above the lowest marking on the dipstick. I received Toyota’s warranty extension notice and scheduled the excessive oil usage test. On March 7, 2015, part 1 of Toyota’s technical service bulletin test was performed; I did not stay with the car while the oil change was performed. On April 13, 2015, the second part of the test was performed. I was surprised to be informed my car did not meet Toyota’s specifications for excessive oil usage as I had not used a full quart of oil in the 1,100 miles since the oil change. I was told the dealership would perform no further action and my next alternative would be to contact Toyota’s regional or corporate office. I continue to experience oil usage at excessive rates; however, based on Toyota’s stance thus far, my oil usage is not considered excessive.

21 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2014

As of 9/16/14 our 2006 Rav4 v6 currently has 45,790 miles and we just got a diagnostic from a Toyota dealership service that this part is defective a charcoal canister and an b1s2 O2 sensor needs replacement. Me and my wife love the SUV but with such low miles I would not have expected for this to have happened. From my quick research, I understand this could cause more engine damage if not repaired, I see a decrease in miles per gallon and a rough idling. I wanted to know if there is a recall for this part which is a charcoal canister and the O2 sensor. Toyota wanted $1,303. 00 total repair and for this low milage vehicle is not what I expect from a quality vehicle.

22 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2014

This has happened to me three times and to my wife once. As we begin to accelerate, either from a stop or as we are accelerating, we have a pause in acceleration. If feels like we are not pushing on the gas but that is not it. Once the gas pedal is released and we re-accelerate, the car moves forward normally. It has been very scary when someone is approaching and the gas does not move us forward. This has not happened in reverse.

23 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2014

While driving home after grocery shopping, about a 4-mile drive, the vvt-I oil hose "exploded" (the word used by the Toyota sunnyvale, CA), causing smokes to come out of the car's engine compartment. Immediately, the kids were pulled out the vehicle and placed in a safe location. We are very concerned about the safety of the 2006 Toyota Rav4's oil line. What would have happened if the family was travelling farther away from home?! there is a "limited service campaign" in 2010 that only covers certain VIN of 2006-2009 Toyota Rav4. Although, my vehicle does not fall under the lsc, my vehicle is experiencing the same design defect. March 01, 2010 Toyota announced phase three of a limited service campaign (lsc) on certain 2007 -¿ 2009 model year avalon and Rav4 vehicles with a 2gr-fe (v6) engine . . . For phase three, there are approximately. . . 89,000 Rav4 v6 (2007-2009 model year) vehicles involved in the united states. Last year, Toyota also announced phases one and two of this lsc on. . . Rav4 v6 (2006 model year). . . Toyota needs to take better responsibility for this defect and recall all Rav4 v6 with similar design defect.

24 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Have to keep adding a quart of oil every other week or so. Im checking it all the time! bought it new from dealer! my mechanic said either valves or pistons. Common problem with this model. I'm very upset. Change my oil every 3 thousand miles. I take very good care of my car. Went on line and others are having the same issues. Its costly to fix and Toyota should honor andfix this defect! my first Toyota and probably my last. I'll kept adding oil and see what happens.

Car at about 37,000 miles. Only drive to store and drop kids off to school. Car parked for 10 minutes while at store shopping. Came back, started the engine. The engine light, vsc and 4wd lights all lighted up. When to local Toyota dealer, dealer said can't service it at this time need to make appointment. 30 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2012

Oil light came on indicating low oil although the car had been serviced at a local shop within in the last month. It then became a problem with continually having to stop there and "topping off" although I was going there when the "maintenance" light came on. It would need 1 to 2 quarts each time. Have to carry oil all the time in my car as even though we check it fairly often, every 1 to 2 weeks. It always needs oil. The shop wanted to diagnose the problem for me, but now I can see it is a very widespread problem which I feel should have been addressed years ago.

31 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

2006 Toyota rav 4. Consumer states ignition coil and plug failure the consumer stated while driving, various dashboard lights illuminated and the transmission shimmied and the engine misfired and the vehicle became disabled. An inspection by the dealer revealed a misfire code and that a number two coil and plug had to be replaced. A month and a half later, the consumer experienced the same problem again. It was determined that another ignition coil had failed and the SUV was operating in four cylinder mode. The consumer was informed his model vehicle had a design/engineering problem which was identified and does not occur on subsequent year rav 4 models.

33 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/28/2011

I own a 2006 Rav4 v6. At roughly 60,000 miles the engine, vsc and 4wd light would start going on and then off after shutting down. The dealer said it was probably the gas cap after filling up not being tight. At 64,000 miles the lights went on and stayed on. Because my local Toyota dealer is worthless, I went to a trusted mechanic. The codes showed a bad coil in the #2 cylinder so I replaced it. They suggested that these coils have been known to be bad and that I should replace all of them. I didn't want to drop $1300 at the time and now at 70,000 the lights are on again and the codes are showing all 6 coils are bad again. How is it that a car that is supposed to be able to go 100,000 miles before you even need to change the plugs has all the coils go bad at the same time. There are web sites for Rav4 owners all over the internet complaining of the same thing and Toyota has done nothing.

34 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/06/2007

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Rav4. While driving at approximately 25 mph, the contact noticed that the vehicle would not accelerate or shift into higher gears without difficulty. The contact had not called the manufacturer at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was approximately 12,000. The current mileage was approximately 50,000.

35 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/16/2007

Details: the vehicle has frequent problems with acceleration when cold. Car has no power when trying to enter traffic. I will step on the gas, begin moving, then the engine will bog down and I will have no acceleration at all. I have taken this up to my dealer, and their explanation is that nothing is wrong. However, this problem can occur when ever it is cold.
