Failure Date: 10/01/2020

The engine is burning oil due to bad piston rings. I did some digging found that that it was manufactured this way.

2 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2020

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that the vehicle was consuming oil at an excessive rate. The contact took the vehicle to a certified mechanic who stated that the oil was leaking and excessively burning to the extent that it could cause a possible engine failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and informed the contact that a warranty related campaign regarding the engine had been issued however, the time-frame was exceeded. The approximate failure mileage was 82,000.

3 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2020

The engine is burning oil like mad. I purchased it three weeks ago and there were no issues when I looked at it. I hooked my obd ii scanner and no codes popped, which made me go ahead and purchase it. I heard about the Toyota 2az-fe engines having oil issues, but this is getting out of hand. My mechanic changed my oil a little over a week ago and notified me that I was a quart low, but filled it for me. He told me if I was concerned to monitor it, which I have. Tonight, February 27, 2020, I checked my oil while it's stationary in my driveway and has not been on for over four hours and it's right around the low level line. I got my oil changed at 163,035 miles. It's now low at 163,260 miles! I'm scared and concerned about driving it because being a college student and working, I would dread that my Rav4's engine blows up or seizes on me out of no where. Please, this issue is scary and can place a lot of people and families in danger. I can provide paperwork of the day of the oil change and my odometer. I took a picture of it which I will attach.

4 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 05/09/2019

2. 4 engine burns excessive oil. Apparently, other Toyota models with the same 2. 4 engine have had free repairs. I believe Toyota should repair the 2. 4 engine in my 2006 Rav4 to stop the excessive oil burning. It now burns one quart for every 500-600 miles.

5 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2019

There was a recall regarding oil consumption. I took my vehicle to the dealer. They filled up the oil and told me to come back after 3000 miles but to not fill the oil. Halfway in, the oil was completely exhausted. Because it had not been 3000 miles, I could not take it back for a fix. I had no choice but to add oil or the engine blows. When I did take it back, I was given the response that the vehicle burns a normal amount of oil and I told them I had to fill it in between to avoid the engine blowing. They refused to fix the recall. I contacted Toyota who also refused to fix the recall because the dealership had written "normal" consumption. The vehicle burns oil at a very rapid rate and I would like this recall performed on my vehicle.

6 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2018

Ever since my vehicle hit 100,000 miles, it has been burning oil excessively at the rate of about 2-3 quarts every 800-1000 miles. The vehicle currently has approx. 116,000 miles on it. Prior to reaching 100,000 miles, it was tested by Toyota via a service "bulletin", not a "recall" for this issue, and passed. But, after reaching 100,000 miles it was tested again, and failed. Unfortunately, the vehicle is no longer under any type of warranty coverage, making repairs financially impossible.

7 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2018

I bought a 2006 Rav4 limited from Toyota of elizabeth city in nc. This Rav4 is nice and runs well, however it consumes about 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles. I spoke with the previous owner, whom informed me that he expressed the issue to the dealership where he traded this vehicle in at. The dealer failed to let us know about this extensive TSB relating to the excessive oil consumption. It is not nice to sell a vehicle with a well known active TSB. It is further unacceptable for Toyota to not have a all out recall on this issue. Will be calling Toyota customer service.

8 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2018

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Rav4. While driving at unknown speeds, the vehicle burned an excessive amount of oil. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified and opened case number: 1801053296. No further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 140,000.

9 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/31/2017

It was recalled for motor oil consumption. But was not able to take it forbpersonal reasons. Recall expired it can not be fixed. Now car is consuming alot of oil. Don't know what to do.

10 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2017

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Rav4. While driving, there was excessive oil consumption without warning. An oil consumption test determined that there were two quarts of oil lost within 1,100 miles. The vehicle was taken to jones Toyota (1508 belair road, belair, MD 21014) where it was diagnosed that the piston rings needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact called the manufacturer and was informed that they would not consider the warranty and there was no recall on the vehicle. The failure mileage was 136,900.

11 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 08/26/2017

Excessive oil consumption. Three weeks ago, August 2017, at 100,000 miles I have had to add 1 quart of oil every other week.

12 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2017

Engine started excessively burning oil at approx 110,000 mile mark. Took to dealer. Warranty was still valid. Engine would be almost dry at 3,000 mile mark. They did a consumption test, said it passed. When I asked how that could be since it shouldn't be dry at 3,000 mile mark. They told me to watch it and come back. When it happened again, way before next oil change was needed, 3,300 miles, bone dry, they said my warranty was expired. Internet shows this is a problem with my make, model and year car, they know it, but refuse to recall due to cost. They refuse to fix the engine.

13 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2017

I took my vehicle in for a recall. The technician found it was low on oil and filled it. Two weeks later I had my mechanic check and it was low 2 quarts of oil. I set my trip odometer. It has been 2000 miles and I have had to add 4 quarts of oil to my engine. I am told this excessive oil consumption is due to bad pistons that will need to be changed. I understand this to be a costly repair.

14 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2017

I purchased the vehicle used last April. Less than 30 days later I realized it was burning excessive oil. I brought it to the used car dealership that I purchased it from he said he would check some spark plugs and it would be fine. Few days after he "fixed the problem" I had to add more more oil. I brought it back to him he said that 2006 rav 4 Toyota rav 4s are known to burn excessive oil. He said he would provide me with car to trade at no cost. Almost one year has gone by and this has not happened. I feel that he should do something about it and give me my money back but I feel that Toyota should also be held responsible.

15 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2017

My 2006 Rav4 has an oil consumption problem. The car was burning 1/2 quart of oil every 300 miles. I am paying $3500 to have the pistons and rings replaced.

16 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2017

Burning oil. I have to put oil all the time. Mechanics said car can't fix because the engine is the problem. I can only change the engine because it is a manufacturer problems. The car burn gas as well.

17 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2017

After my engine oil light flickered briefly a few times when driving. I had the oil checked and found it virtually empty, we put a quarter in and took it to the dealership where they filled my oil and taped the oil cap and had me return between 1000 and 1300 miles. Today I took it in at 1200 miles and was 2 quarts low. Have had all of my oil changes done at 3000 miles at the same dealership the car was purchased. They claim a letter was sent offering a oil consumption test and would have possibly covered repairs if I had an issue during the 10 year period they were offering warranty enhancement. I never saw such a letter. My car never had lowe oil recorded until my one oil change where I was basically empty. I have filed a claim with Toyota, but they are saying there is nothing they will do for me. This is a well known issue with many lawsuits and should be a recall. Never once did the service people ever mention this issue or offer to do the oil consumption test when my car was under warranty. The engine is probably going to require a new pistons and rings and cost several thousand dollars to fix. I think Toyota needs to step up and take responsibility for these faulty engines they put in their Toyotas.

18 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2017

It seems there is a problem with the oil consumption in many different Toyota vehicle models including mine. I brought my vehicle in for service on this particular problem and they did an oil consumption test, which was not performed as I drove over the required 1200 miles. However, they told me I needed to have the bottom part of the engine rebuilt. Not once did they mention the ongoing problem. I told them I had to think about it and was told to check the oil more often than normal. After getting home and doing research online did I find that my engine can seize at any time even with oil in it. Also, if I pay for the repairs, this can happen again. I don't have the money for repairs nor another vehicle. There should have been a recall on this problem. I would have never bought my car if I would have known. I don't know what to do. Can you advise?.

19 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2017

This car has the infamous Toyota excessive oil consumption issue with the 2. 4 l i4 engine. It burns a qt of oil in 2000 miles or less.

20 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2016

Toyota oil consumption. When changing the oil, the oil pan only drains roughly 2 quarts of oil. I checked online to see if there were any recalls on oil consumption for the make, model, and year of the car and there was. Unfortunately, when typing in the VIN it did not have a recall for that specific vehicle. But it did matched exactly what the symptoms of that recall was. I called the 1-800 customer help line and they were unhelpful. I was told the recall expired and the previous owner did not take action with the recall. This can be a huge road safety hazard for both the driver and other drivers around the vehicle. The car is consuming oil due to the pistons recall. Please help.

21 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2016

The car is burning oil and I was told to bring it in for consumption test when I got there the dealer told me it is no longer under warrant. But I know by doing research that it is.

22 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2016

10/26/15 was serviced by germain Toyota, naples, FL, oil tank was empty and engine was overheated. The car had been driven 3711 miles since last oil change (there was no leak). I put a quart of oil in so that I could drive it to the dealer. They performed their version of an oil consumption test and claimed it passed the test. 3/11/16 oil tank was empty and car was overheated. It had been driven 2496 miles since the previous oil change. They said it had passed the previous test & all was ok. 10/7/16 oil tank was empty, had been driven but I had purchased 3 qts of oil and added it to the empty tank. Prior to me adding the oil, car was extremely overheated and I got burned trying to get the hood up. I could not touch any part of the engine or would have been severely burned. The car now failed a new oil consumption test. They advised they could not fix it because as of 4/3/2016 it was out of the their extended 10-yr warranty for oil consumption problem. They told me it is now my responsibility to continually add oil. If a safety hazard should occur they said it would be my fault and not theirs. In all cases above the engine was on, vehicle in motion on city streets when the indicator light came on or car overheated. There was no oil on the dip stick when checked in every one of the cases.

26 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2015

This complaint is due to a recall: warranty enhancement notification ze7 concerning excessive oil consumption. A Toyota dealership tested my car on 8/27/15 and it failed. I was advised to keep checking & adding oil as needed and I would be notified when the parts arrived to correct this. When I called today, 2/2/16, they still haven't received parts for Rav4, I am very upset that it's taking so many months and I'm responsible for this problem in the meantime. I feel as if I'm driving a time bomb and it's very bothersome to keep checking the level.

27 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2015

Tl the contact owns a 2006 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that the vehicle consumed a quart of oil every 50 miles. 28 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2015

The 2006 Rav4 model Toyota has a record of stuck or clogged oil rings causing excessive oil consumption which can lead to failure of engine and catalytic converter. This defect causes oil to burn at a rate of approximately 1 quart or more every 1,000 miles. My Rav4 was brought to the dealership on 7/16/2015 to perform the first phase of an oil inspection & consumption test. On 8/4/2015 the vehicle was brought back to the dealership for re-inspection. It failed the consumption test & I was told that as soon as parts became available I'd be contacted; however, there were several customers ahead of me awaiting the same repair. Two months have passed & I have yet to hear back from the dealership as to when the repair can happen. I called the service manager 10/2/2015. The service manager told me he would look into the matter & return my call in 15 minutes. He never called back. Toyota has only issued a TSB about this issue to dealers/mechanics, thus owners may not be aware that oil is being burned off as the excess smoke is absorbed by the catalytic converter, which causes causes premature failure of that par as well. This needs to be a recall item. If a car doing 70mph has an engine failure due to loss of oil then the person will loose steering and brake control leading to a serious accident or death. This is a mechanical issue as well as a safety issue.

29 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2015

Excessive oil consumption my car's engine is burning excessive amounts of oil. While I've had the problem for years, it is getting significantly worse and I have been adding oil multiple times between my scheduled services. Since I am aware of the issue I've been diligent about checking my levels, but I found out it was an issue when my car turned off while I was driving (I was lucky to have been in a parking lot at the time).
