36 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2014

May, 2014 I had my vehicle oil change done. I follow the policy of three month or 3500 miles which ever comes first. I have been using this quick lube place for fifteen years. When the oil was drained I was informed that the oil was low. I assumed that when the vehicle was in the dealers shop for a recall and the oil change was done their that they failed to put the proper amount of oil into the vehicle. With less than 3500 miles and three months the oil light came on again. I went in to have the oil changed and checked for leaks. It was short approximatly two quarts with no signs of an oil leak. I was told that they have several customers with this same model who experience the same problem due to the vehicle burning oil, and told to contact Toyota. It was also sugessed to regularly check the oil every two weeks. Upon returning home I checked on line and found multiple complaints for the same issue with vehicles with low mileage. I have been the original owner from day one and have maintained this vehicle.

37 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2014

Engine would try to die when I applied the brakes. The engine light came on and I looked it up in the manual and saw it was the engine oil symbol. I took it in where I had the oil changed last and they said it was 2. 5 qts low. They topped it off and told me to come back after 200 miles and when I did, they said it had used more than it should have. Took it into the Toyota dealer and they started the oil consumption test. Yesterday was the final for that and low and behold, they determined that the vehicle was using oil. They said the rings, pistons , valves and etc. Should be replaced for a total of $4,300+. They offered me no assistance but did tell me that they were offering 0 percent on new vehicles. I would never purchase another Toyota. I know someone with the same car as mine who spent several hundreds trying to get her car fixed with the same problem and just finally traded it for something else. From reading consumer complaints online, there are hundreds of people having the same problem with this vehicle, please, please step in and make Toyota address this issue. Thanks.

38 Engine Burning Oil problem

The engine is burning excessive amounts of oil due to a defective oil ring. The dealership says the only fix is to replace the engine.

39 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

Because of a manufacturer defect, the oil gets all burned up by the engine even though there is no leak. As consumers, we do not know about it until it is too late.

40 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2013

I'm a owner of 06 Toyota Rav4 it has 152,488 miles I have been noticing oil consumption dramatically, the dealer has told me that is low but there are no leaks, Toyota says change your oil every 5,000 miles but my engine light starts to flicker at 3,000 I have stop to check my oil stick an it shows less than a quart of oil, I have switched to synthetic oil and the same things is happening. I've been speaking to several owners of Rav4 and it seems that I'm not the only one with this issue it looks like this is a big issue with these Rav4.

41 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2013

I own a 2006 Rav4. Bought it new and have had every oil change and recommended engine service done since that time done at the dealership. A few months ago, I took it in to have my fluids checked before a road trip, and was told that the dipstick showed that I had absolutely no oil! it was almost impossible as I had just had an oil change about 3 weeks prior. I immediately took the car to the dealer and they added some oil and said they would "monitor the oil consumption. " I thought maybe a careless mechanic failed to properly fill the reservoir. However, since then, I have had to go back every 1000 miles so they could check the dipstick and add oil, but each time was told that they will continue the monitoring. However, about 2 weeks ago, they called me and told me they had some information for me. I was told that to fix the problem I really need a new engine, as the oil is being used internally by the engine due to a piston assembly design problem per the TSB. I asked if Toyota was going to fix the problem for me at it's cost, and they told me that there is no recall because it is not a safety issue. This is an unacceptable answer as this is not a "normal wear and tear" issue, it's a design defect issue. As such, Toyota should step up and fix the problems that are obviously being experienced by ( judging from the various blogs I've been viewing) lots of Toyota owners who have the same problem. The only option the dealer gave me was that I can have the piston repair work done and have the small block replaced for $3172. 00. Like I said, I felt Toyota should pay for this, not me, as Toyota, not I, caused the problem.

42 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2013

I have always brought in my Toyota for regular maintenance to the dealer every 5,000 miles. In July of this year, the oil warning light began to light every time I hit the brakes. My dealer performed an oil consumption check. By November I was advised to have the engine reconstructed and repair the rings and pistons, because the engine was leaking excessive oil. I also had to replace the brakes. The repairs cost over $3500 and took over a week to complete. I recently learned that this model Toyota has a record of stuck oil rings causing excessive oil consumption which leads to engine failure. I feel that this should be a recall item. Engine failure due to loss of oil can cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle. This is a serious safety issue. I would like to be reimbursed for this manufacturer's defect that Toyota is fully aware of.

43 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2013

The engine for my 2006 Toyota is burning oil rapidly. I have about 115,000 miles and was hoping that this car would at least last me another 5 years. The dealership is telling me that my engine needs an engine overhaul which will cost about $3,000. I make sure to take care of my car and bring it for an oil change when it's due.

44 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2013

Dear officer, I would like to bring your attention to a serious flaw with certain Toyota models related to excessive oil consumption. Bowing down to the thousands of consumer complaints early this year Toyota accepted that it is issue with their engine design which can put engine on fire or make the car completely useless after seize. Toyota indicated that they would provide parts early this spring, yet it is the end of June, and Toyota (a giant car manufacturer) still does not have parts to fix the serious problem Toyota consumers are suffering thru every day. The issue: certain Toyota model cars burn excessive oil. The proof of issue(from internet) 1. . Read more...

45 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2013

When I took my vehicle to get an oil change, the technician told me there was nothing showing on the dip stick. Although a low-oil light never appeared to let me know that the oil was low, the oil was very low. I started checking my oil level often and noticed that I needed to add oil between oil changes. I can also smell burning oil when I accelerate either to get on a highway ramp or to go up a hill. A dealership subsequently told me that the rings on the engine block were worn and that I needed a new engine that would cost approximately $8,500. Now I drive around with a case of oil in my back seat. From what I've read on the internet, this is not an isolated case.

46 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2013

There is a very pronounced rattle, clacking, or such noise from the engine when traveling at around 25 mph while gently accelerating from between 1500 and 2000 rpm. It is quite repeatable. It occurs more readily when going uphill but I can induce it on flat ground as well. It sounds it is from the top end but because it only happens at-speed I cannot know for sure. The sound resembles valvetrain noise. This vehicle was purchased from a Toyota dealer with approx. 46k miles and it has made this noise since I first owned the car. It has been reported twice and both times I was told that it is normal, "all Rav4s do that". I don't know if this is related in any way to the well-known oil consumption issue that this engine has (2. 4 liter inline 4), as I also experience excessive oil consumption.

47 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 05/06/2013

Oil consumption, insurance will not pay to correct this defect that apparently is a problem with Toyota rav 4 this an issue with 2006 ravs and the should be a recall as this is a very expensive issue that is related to the vehicle making and not neglect by the owner.

48 Engine Burning Oil problem

Excessive oil consumption. - Toyota won't fix.

49 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2012

The check engine oil light began flickering under hard braking. Light never was on under normal idle or travel. Upon checking oil on dipstick - no oil registered on dipstick. I immediately proceeded to the change oil and the oil pan only contained approximately 1. 2 quarts or 75% less than the 4. 5 quarts specified. Upon web research it appears Rav4 has problems with excessive oil consumption. Registered a complaint with Toyota USA as I know have concerns damage was done to engine as warning light should have come on sooner.

50 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 11/13/2012

Oil pressure warning lit up at approximately 73,050 miles. Diagnosis is that the oil consumption is faster than normal. Servicer topped off oil and returned to servicer after driving $1200 miles. I was told everything is fine. Then it happened again at approximately 81,950 miles. Servicer again tops off with oil and returned after driving another $1200 miles. This time the servicer stated that they need to tear the car apart the before pinpointing the exact problem. Approximate cost to do this is maybe $3,000. Extended warranty expired at $75,000 miles.

51 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2012

My truck has had 4 incidents of dangerously low oil levels. Toyota has service bulletins out regarding oil consumption and my model of the 2006 Toyota Rav4 regarding faulty pistons and rings. I have brought my truck to Toyota 4 times for this issue and Toyota refuses to fix the problem under my warranty stating that I am out of warranty even though my first complaint was 10/13/13 and my warranty expired Jan 2013 t-sb-0094-11 is the Toyota service bulletin.

52 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2012

At approximately 81000 miles, rav-4 started to burn oil at a rate of two quarts per every 3000 miles. Now at 120,000 miles, it burns one quart every 1000 miles. By comparison, my 1987 Toyota camry does not burn a drop.

53 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 06/04/2012

Excessive consumption of oil. It was first noticed approximately 3+ years ago it was noticed when car oil light came on and car was almost totally out of oil. At approximately 2,000 miles after an oil change, it is necessary to add 2-3 quarts of oil. This has been occurring after every oil change. Toyota recently tested and after 1,664 miles from the last oil change, 3 quarts of oil was needed to top it off. It did fail the oil consumption test. I want to know why Toyota is not extending car warranty as is Honda for the same problem.

57 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2009

On Tuesday, 22 September, 2009, I came home and parked my car in the > garage. When I got out, I noticed the smell of burning oil. I investigated > and found oil running out from under the front end of my wifes Rav4. The > oil was continuing to flow and had covered most of the garage floor (I have > pictures). I opened the hood of the rav and found the engine compartment > covered in smoking oil. The underside of the car was also dripping oil from various > locations, with no apparent damage being visible. I examined the dipstick, > but no oil was indicated. When I opened the oil fill cap, smoke came out > with a strong smell of burnt oil being present. I immediately called > american Toyota and requested a service appointment. This was scheduled for > the next morning. Next I called aaa and arranged to have a flatbed take the > rav to american. When the tow service arrived, we pushed the car out of the > garage and positioned it to be winched onto the flatbed. Oil was deposited > all over the driveway. > > I drove my car to american and met with the service advisor for > american. I explained that the rav had developed a serious leak and that > the car was being towed to the dealership. The service advisor related that there is a known issue with the oil supply line (to the head) for the rav and camry > using the 3. 5l v-6 engine. He explained the failure mode for the line and > stated that the part should be in stock. I am very disappointed with Toyota regarding this situation. My on-line research and discussion with the service advisor shows that the ravs failure mode was well known to Toyota. The ravs maintenance has always been performed at american, but no one was proactive and replaced the oil line or even advised us that it might be a subject for concern. What would have happened if my wife had been driving the rav out in remote part of nm or it had burned my house down? Toyota is not cooperating by providing failure or repair information.
