36 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2014

The external oil pressure line to the rear cylinder head busted while driving on the interstate. This caused the engine to completely dump all 6 quarts of motor oil onto the highway. Fortunate for me I was only 0. 8 miles from an exit with a safe parking lot. I do not know if the oil from my vehicle caused any wrecks on the interstate, however the potential for a motorcycle wreck or any vehicle that had to make a sudden slow down or quick maneuver would be at a high risk of an accident. Not only did this put my engine at risk for catastrophic failure, but it could have been completely avoided. Toyota is not only aware of this problem but have procedures in place to fix the hose when it ruptures. Its not a matter of if the hose will rupture, but when will the oil hose rupture. If I had been informed of the need to replace the hose I would have gladly have had the hose replaced. The least Toyota should do is send every owner of this type of engine with this typed of hose a letter explaining what could possibly happen and what they need to do to prevent this very preventable problem.

37 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2014

Third such incident -- two previous in late 2009 -- backing up slowly in parking lot, engine suddenly started to race. I threw the gear shift into neutral, stepping on brake at the same time. Engine continued to race for several seconds (seemed like an eternity); racing finally stopped when I released brake and tapped the brake pedal.

38 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2014

The oil light blinked on. I was down below a quart on my 2007 Rav4. This is the second time this happened to me. The first time the car was only 5 years old. Toyota performs its engine consumption test and says the vehicle is operating within Toyota specifications yet this is the second time this has happened. I will never buy another Toyota vehicle.

39 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2014

We returned from a trip to reno/California in my Toyota rav 4. I had decided to wait until I returned to change oil since there was only about 3000 or less on the last change,. When we returned and nearing our destination, the oil light came on. In checking the oil, no oil showed on the dipstick. I took the car in for service including changing the transmission oil (about $600 ). A couple of weeks later, I checked the oil and it was down 1 1/2 quarts. I now still have about 2000 miles to go before my car needs another oil change and it was again low and another quart was added. Per my research I find that Toyota has known about this problem and sent out info to dealers in 2011 to fix the problem if it is still under warranty. According to what I've read, it requires a piston to be replaced. Toyota has totally ignored this problem and I find that it seems to be common on Rav4's.

40 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2014

The car unexpectedly accelerated as I was approaching a red traffic light. My foot was on the brake to slow down when the car's engine revved up and the car kept moving forward with my foot on the brake pedal as far as it could go. The car finally stopped about 6 feet into the intersection. The next morning the car repeated the unexpected acceleration while I was trying to slow down prior to stopping for a stop sign. The driver's side floor mat was removed two or three years ago and was not present that evening or the next morning. I reported this episode to the Toyota dealer and I told him I was afraid to drive the car. The dealer told me the car was out of warranty, but if I wanted have to car towed to the dealership, he would have to technicians check it for historical record of the episode. I was also told I was responsible for towing charges and the cost of the diagnostic analysis. The computerized diagnostic check showed nothing had happened and nothing was wrong with the car. I told the dealer the I was not impressed with the diagnostic test device, as the acceleration did happen and the test set was obviously not checking the source of the problem. I called Toyota customer service telephone number is torrance California, told them my story and asked if Toyota had received any other such complaints. I was told that Toyota could not release that information. I asked what Toyota did with my report of the problem. I was told it went into a Toyota data base. I asked for a copy of Rav4 episodes in the data base. I was told Toyota could not furnish that to me. I then asked for a copy of my report that Toyota entered into the data base. Toyota told me it could not furnish that to me. Toyota seems to discredit reports of this acceleration/safety issue as if it could not possibly happen.

41 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2013

We have noticed excessive oil useage. The vehicle is using appoximately 2 quarts of oil every 1,000 miles. The vehicle has approximately 142,000 miles on it.

42 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2013

Car is consuming oil, consumes most engine oil in a 1,000 miles. Oil check reveals no oil without any warning oil light. The engine could fail while driving without notice. This is a known problem with 2007 Toyota rav 4s. There should be a recall. Brought it to the dealer and they did not disclose this known problem.

43 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2013

I have just experienced sudden acceleration while pulling into a parking spot. I slammed on the brake and it didn't want to stop. I ended up bumping the car in front of me as I continued to brake. The engine was still surging and wouldn't go into reverse. I called mountain states Toyota here in denver and explained the problems to the service manager. He told me that he had never heard of such a thing. There are numerous complaints with the same issue on the internet. The service manager, of course, is telling me that if they cannot reproduce it and it is not showing error codes(which it isn't) there isn't anything they can do. I told him I wanted the acceleration system thoroughly inspected. . . Which he wants to charge me for unless they do find an issue. By what I have seen on the internet, it is useless to take it in as Toyota is ignoring the issue, thinking they fixed it with the floor mats. I had the floor mats replaced on that recall well before this issue came up. I have also had many experiences with the engine surging and hesitating with the tach showing the surge. It is intermittent and cannot be reproduced, but it is getting worse over time. I now believe that this is related to the acceleration issue I described above. I am afraid to drive it now as it could happen on a busy street and really hurt someone and me.

44 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2013

This vehicle is using almost 2 quarts of oil every 5000 miles. I have checked on the internet, and there is a rash of complaints on this Toyota Rav4 - 4 cylinder engine. It seems that most of them are using oil. Toyota should be doing something about this.

45 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2013

Excessive oil use uses 1 qt every 1500 miles Toyota is aware the problem - has released a technical service bulletin - but no warranty coverage I even ran a oil consumtion test with the Toyota dealer to prove it - but dealer claims this is exceptable.

46 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2012

My wife was driving a 2007 rva 4 limited when the car ahead of her suddenly stopped. Speed was 25 to 30 mph in stop and go traffic. She braked and collided with the car ahead of her. My wife was able to catch herself and was sitting up right when the air bags deployed. There was a delay in the airbags by several seconds after the front collision. Soon after the airbags deployed, thick black smoke came up through the steering column. My wife evacuated the car and within five minutes the car was totally engulfed in flames. I am concerned on the delay in airbag deployment and the fire and speed at which it spread. We loved our rav but have a concern about buying any Toyota product.

This is a follow up email regarding my car 2007 Toyota rav 4 fwd 4 cylinder ; oil consumption of this model is too much 1 quart every 250 - 300 miles. Toyota already know and acknowledge the problem but with my case when I went to the dealer they just told me that it passed the test. 50 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2009

2007 Toyota Rav4 v-6 manufacturing defect with the oil line of the vvt-I camshaft. Poor quality of rubber line has caused multiple failures which has resulted in catastrophic engine damage, engine fires. Toyota is conducting voluntary recalls with certain VIN's, however this voluntary recall does not adequately address the problem. Toyota knows of this manufacturing defect and has redesigned oil line accordingly, but is not offering this redesigned oil line to customers affected by original defect.

52 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2008

We bought our Toyota, a new 2007/4430c Rav4 (5-door 4x2 SUV), on 9/7/07, and have noticed several problems in the operation of this vehicle. Our Rav4 currently has around 24,000 miles on it, and the problems have neither increased nor decreased in frequency. Because these problems are intermittent, our dealer, dunning Toyota of ann arbor, michigan, was unable to replicate what we experience. However, we believe that documenting this situation is important as problemssome of which sound similar to what we have experiencedare currently surfacing on other Toyota vehicles. Problems we have experienced ever since we have had the vehicle include: (1) intermittent engine surges. These occur when accelerating, braking, or simply coasting. The rpm needle visibly fluctuates, and passengers can feel the surging and choking of the engine. (2) the gas pedal sometimes does not smoothly engage, and the car jumps ahead when the pedal seems to finally engage. (3) occasionally the car does not seem to slow when the brake is applied. In the winter of 2008, I was traveling at a low speed (beginning to accelerate from a stop) on slick pavement when the car in front of me unexpectedly stopped in the middle of an intersection. I immediately applied the brake but the car did not seem to slow down. The resulting collision resulted in $615. 63 in damage to our vehicle. I do not know the exact date of the accident. The police were notified but no tickets were issued. I just put an arbitrary month and date below so I could continue to the next page of this report.

53 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2007

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 mph the fwd, engine and stability control warning indicators illuminated continuously. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis and the oxygen sensor was replaced. On a separate occasion while driving in reverse the vehicle unexpectedly accelerated and the rpms increased. The gear lever was shifted into park and the engine was turned off. The vehicle was previously repaired under a recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 11v113000 (vehicle speed control). The problem existed before the recall and persisted after the recall remedy repair was performed. The vehicle was repaired five times due to the unintended acceleration. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The failure mileage and VIN were unavailable.
