Low engine oil light came on at 4200 miles of scheduled 5000 mile oil change. Dipstick checked and no oil was in engine. Two quarts added and brought to dealership for oil consumption test. Car filled with oil driven 1200 miles and brought back. Dealer states approximately 1 quart of oil consumed and it does not qualify for excessive oil consumption correction.

Oil consumption.

40 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2014

This vehicle has required about 3-4 quarts of oil to be added in between oil changes. The oil consumption test has been performed at 2 separate Toyota dealerships, and both have stated that the vehicle is not using an excessive amount of oil and therefore does not require repairs. However, the vehicle continues to need 3-4 quarts of oil between oil changes.

41 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 07/19/2014

Vehicle started pinging when going up hills. Checked oil and it didn't even register! had just had oil changed 2 weeks before. Since this time, I have had to add about 5 quarts of oil. Now I'm told Toyota considers using 1 quart per 1,000 driving miles is "normal". The engine could burn up based on this excessive oil consumption leaving the occupants stranded.

42 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2014

Have taken my car in 2 times to get the oil consumption test done and both times the dealer says it's within Toyota's guidelines. The third time I called to have it done they told me I would have to pay so I just continue to add oil every 600 miles. I took to another mechanic they said this is not normal to burn this much oil and it's not leaking oil, they said they could pull the engine apart to tell me why it's leaking for $500. 00, but I wish Toyota would fix the issue knowing there is one, and they have an enhancement warranty for the problem good until 10/2016, however, they say I'm not within Toyota guidelines, the first time I even noticed this issue was after I had car serviced at the dealer prior to a trip I was making, my oil light came on my stick had burnt oil on it as it was bone dry. I added thinking the dealer just didn't do a good job, well come to find out, I have been checking and adding ever since. In between oil changes less than 3,000 miles oil light has come on and completely dry no oil registering on the dip stick.

43 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2014

A little after its regular scheduled maintenance my 2008 Rav4 started to make an odd noise (rattling) when reaching 40 mph at 1500 rpm. Checked fluids and noticed that engine oil was dry (burnt oil on stick) and black atf. Immediately replaced fluids (engine and ws atf). Took car to dealer and they said they didn't noticed anything unusual. Drove with tech and showed him the noise at specified conditions. He said more tests needed to be done. Up until today they are not sure what the issue may be and suggested a bunch of different "fix" that I will have to pay for myself. Found a TSB online for a similar issue (t-sb-0094-11). Toyota should be held responsible and fix this issue at no cost to users.

44 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2014

My oil warning light kept coming on when I was breaking. I had approximately 2300 miles since my last oil change but took the car in to get checked. The mechanic found there was vertually no oil left in the engine. Since then I have to put oil in my engine around every 500-700 miles. My car is experiencing excessive oil consumption. I just took my car into my closest Toyota dealer and they said in 20 years they have never seen this problem. I feel like they are lying to me and just want the faulty part fixed. I don't know what my rights are and what I can do to get help. -thank you.

45 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2014

I began to notice a burnt oil smell when I would return home from school in the evening, I checked my oil, the dip stick showed not a trace of oil! the vehicle was half way between oil changes at the time, my husband added 4 quarts of oil (so we know for certain it was empty) and brought it to Toyota. They "checked it", changed the oil, and sent us on our way telling us to monitor the oil level. This was at 68k miles. It was next due for an oil change at 73,000miles I checked the oil level yesterday at 71,000 miles and it was nearly empty. Called the dealer again, was told they couldn't get me in for 10 days!! I called another Toyota dealer who told me to bring it in. The service mgr acknowledged there was a problem with "certain rav 4 engines" and that a service bulletin had been issued to repair the issue (not a recall-he made that clear). He explained that I would have to follow their procedure before it can be repaired though by doing two oil consumption tests (that I have to pay $24. 95 for, and drive 1200 miles each) then I would have to authorize them to do an engine removal and disassembly for $575 to determine it is not something I had done to the car. I have babied this vehicle from day one! I never go beyond 4000 miles for an oil change, ever. Now I have to drive my family around in a potentially hazardous vehicle while they decide whether or not to repair the engine that they have known there was a problem with for years!! unacceptable! this is terrifying knowing that my engine could seize at any moment while I am on the highway driving with my child. It is equally as frightening to realize that I may end up having to pay $6000+ for a new engine for this piece of defective merchandise I am still paying for because Toyota believes they are above the law. Please hold them accountable.

48 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2014

The car is burning oil. I was told that it was burning 1/2 quart every 1200 miles & to keep adding oil. That this usage was wnl. After an online search I find this is a common problem that Toyota has not been dealing with. I have an extended warranty that will be running out soon. I feel the car should be recalled and they should do the right thing. I have filled a complaint with the USA cooperate office.

49 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/13/2013

I purchase my 2008 Toyota rav 4 in 2012 with 39,739 miles, currently it has about 56,000 miles. The engine is burning oil. I noticed that over the last 6 months that the oil light will suddenly go on (car is not due for an oil change, under mileage and under date range needed) and I will pull into a gas station and I am told that there is barely any oil in the engine. This is shocking. . . As the warning light only went on when it was practically empty. This is also concerning as the car is usually way under the need for an oil change. It is not leaking oil, it is burning it. I plan on bringing it to the dealership on 12/21. Hopefully I will have some answers; however, this is very concerning and very dangerous.

50 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 11/06/2013

Change oil every 3000 miles. In sept changed oil and was told oil was low. Today had car inspected only 1500 miles into oil change and my engine light was on I was told the dip stick was clean. Seems the engine is burning oil. I see many other people complaining of the same issue. I have not taken it to Toyota dealer but plan to have them check this out, but I am sensing from the other same complaints something is not right. Hope this gets investigated.

51 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2013

At around 80k miles my mechanic noticed the engine was burning up oil too quickly and advised I bring it in more often for him to check the oil and to add if needed. He did this for me until one day all the dashboard lights came on and he told me my engine was shot. I purchased a 100k warranty and when I took it into Toyota they said they would run a test and to come back in 1200 miles. The parts manager even admitted that this was a very common problem with the 2008 fleet of 4 cylinder enginines! as soon as I left the engine cut out while I was on the freeway. Towed the car back to Toyota, they kept it there a month waiting for the warranty tech to come inspect the engine. He claimed I did not maintain my engine and that the warranty would not cover any costs. I ended up selling the car to a mechanic at the shop for 800$ this covered the bill Toyota sent me for having the vehicles engine taken apart, they were going to charge me to put it back together but was offered the money from an employee to take it off my hands. I bought this car brand new in 2008 with the 100k warranty, I hate Toyota and will never purchase a vehicle from them ever again and I tell everyone I know to stay clear from these jerks.

52 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2013

My family and I went on a trip to georgia and before I made the trip I changed the oil I always check the oil before I change it and it was down 1/2 a quart. When I got home after putting 1800 miles on the car it was down 1/2 a quart again. I called the dealer where I bought the car, and explained the problem, they told me it was normal for that engine. I then research on the internet and found that people were having the same complaints with the Toyota 4. 5 engine. As mileage gets higher the problem gets worse, I am afraid that my extended warranty may run out before it gets repaired, as a lot of Toyota car customers have reported. I am a 100% disabled veteran the va gave me a grant to help pay for this car and a trailer hitch to carry my scooter with me. In the years past I have worked on cars and have spoken to many mechanics and they say this is not normal. I feel this car has to be recalled for this issue. My vehicle is now in the oil consumption test stage, we have to go 2 1/2 hours to the dealer just to have the oil checked. Other people say this is to prolong until extended warranty runs out.

53 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2013

Engine is burning too much motor oil. Have to keep putting a liter of oil in the car every two weeks. There has been a technical service bulletin released by Toyota that it is a problem with the r&r piston and ring set. My VIN id is impacted by this.

54 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2013

Similar to several other complaints on this model, my vehicle is also exhibiting excessive oil consumption, up to 1 qt. Within 1,000-1,500 miles, based on my own consumption tests. The dealer has changed the oil since I purchsed this vehicle. The car begin to burn oil at around 66,000 miles. Many times I have complained of this - dealer claims this is "normal" consumption and within specifications as does Toyota motor sales. However, Toyota has issued a technical service bulletin (t-sb-0094-11) which acknowledges a consumption issue on my model as well as several others. I have read online message boards of other Toyota owners with the exact same issue. There is a known problem with the piston assembly that is causing this, however, Toyota refuses to remedy the problem if the vehicle is out of warranty. I contend that this issue was likely present within my warranty but, since I didn't discover it until afterwards, I am simply out of luck with an engine that consumes excessive oil. The dealer quoted me $3,400 to repair. I purchased a Toyota for its perceived reliability, but like other Toyota owners, I too am stuck with a high maintenance vehicle that I too will have to monitor closely as long as I own it. I feel that this problem warrants a recall, due to the extent of the problem in terms of vehicles affected and the potential severity of engine problems. Sadly, Toyota should stand by their products!.

55 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2013

Our 2008 Rav4 oil light came on and we had just had our oil changed so we thought the business didn't add enought oil when they did the oil change. We took it back and was told it was an oil comsumption problem that this model year has. First we heard about it. We took it to Toyota dealer in omaha and they immediately said we had no warranty for this without even looking at it. Red flag. They then did a test where they did another oil change and we drove it for 1000 miles then took it back. They said we did not have an oil comsumption problem. Fast forward to August 2014 and the oil light again came on. The dip stick was dry. We took it again to dealer and was told we did have an oil comsumption. He didn't even look at it. My husband was furious since we had been told we didn't have that problem 13 months eariler. We have been told it would take $5000 to $6000 to fix it since it would require a new engine. Since then we have found out a lot of people have hade this problem and Toyota refuses to do anything about it even though they put the faulty engines in these vehicles. The are trying to shirk their responsibility because this recall cost a little more. Where does this leave the consumer? if we trade it we just lost $5000 to $6000 in value. If we don't we are stuck with a faulty vehicle. There should be a recall for this oil consumption problem. Oviously this is a problem that came right out of the manufacturing of this vehicle. My husband called Toyota and they just argued with him. No help.

56 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2013

This vehicle is exhibiting excessive oil consumption, up to 1 qt. Within 1,000-1,200 miles, based on my own and a Toyota dealer's consumption tests. The dealer claims this is "normal" consumption as does Toyota motor sales. I have read online message boards of other Toyota owners with the exact same issue. 57 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

I went to the dealership for my normal oil change in sept 2013 and was told there was no oil on the dipstick, rav had 85,000 miles at the time. No lights had come on that alerted me to an issue. They noted it on the records and said they would keep an eye on it. I went for my next oil change Nov 2013 and same issue of no oil on dipstick and again no warning lights. They noted it again on paperwork and said we might need to look into why it is using oil. We made a phone call to a friend who is a Toyota mechanic and was told there was a service bulletin issued to the dealerships about oil consumption issues. Dealership did not say anything about this to me either time. We have watched the oil ever since and have to add oil between changes. In January 2015 we received warranty enhancement notification about oil consumption issue. In February we had oil consumption test performed and was told the rav was within normal limits of oil usage. I called Toyota customer service and logged a case. They told me to go back to dealership between 1100-1300 miles and have oil level checked again. It was 1500 miles later before I could get back in to dealership. They noted the rav had used 1 quart of oil in 1500 miles. I am being told that is normal usage and at this time my vehicle will not be included in the "fix". The rav only has 120,000 miles on it.

58 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2013

Excessive engine oil consumption. Adding 1quart every 700 miles and getting worse.

59 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2013

Excessive oil consumption I went for an oil change as I do every 3000 miles and was told there was little oil. They looked for leaks etc. None found. Thought it was a fluke. About 1500 miles in my engine light comes on my brother in law who is a certified mechanic for 30 years and takes care of my car tells me my car is consuming oil and your talking a big job advised me to take it to the dealer to run a consumption test which I did and yes that is what I am told. There is nothing I can do unless I pay to have it fixes which is very costly I was advised to check oil every 1000 miles and fill. Upon research this has been reported by numerous Toyota owners not only on rava4's but other models as well around the 2006/2008 time frame. Toyota admits to problem and fixes in later models but does not do anything to fix a known defect!!!! I have joined every law suit, complaint board, etc. And for this reason will never buy another Toyota.

60 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/24/2012

My VIN number is on their TSB list and they knew their problems and still trying to play games. Toyota is trying everything they can to screw up with consumer. They want you to test the oil consumption even you already tested three times before. They are not answering your phones. Audi already lost their case. Toyota will be the same. This is the first Toyota and also be the last one.

61 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2012

I purchased this Rav4 new in 2007. I've always had it serviced at the Toyota dealer whenever it was due. At about 50,000 miles the engine started using oil at the rate of a quart of oil every 800 miles or so. I mentioned this to the Toyota service personnel several times and was always told that it was normal oil consumption for this engine. I recently discovered that this is a widespread problem, and apparently Toyota does not seem to want to take responsibility for the engine defect. Obviously, the service techs are instructed to tell the customer that this oil consumption is normal. Toyota should do the right thing and make good on this problem.

62 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2012

The 2008 Rav4's seem to have a serious defect with the engines burning a lot of oil due to bad piston rings. This defect is costing Rav4 owners quite a bit of money and Toyota isn't recalling the engines for repair. Toyota should be held reasonable for the design flaws and get these cars fixed right away before something happens to someone.

63 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2012

The contact owns a 2008 Toyota rav 4. The contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing excessive oil consumption. The contact stated the vehicle was burning oil to empty every three thousand miles. The manufacturer recommended that the oil be changed every five thousand miles. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer for a oil consumption test. The dealer stated the vehicle was burning oil at a normal rate. The contact called the manufacturer and filed a complaint. The failure mileage was 74,000.

64 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2012

There was no accident, however, this inquiry is about the engine oil. My wife bought this vehicle new, the engine is a 4 cylinder (2az-fe). This has been happening for the past two years and it continues. Every 1400 to 2000 miles the check engine light comes on, and when I the engine oil, its always two (2) quarts low. I never see any evidence of oil burning in the exhaust; no oil leaks on the driveway, nothing. It's as if the oil disappears. The dealer won't do anything, they say that it's not a safety issue so they won't investigate. My wife has been taking this vehicle to an independent auto shop and they say that they see this all the time with this particular engine. This shop suggests that we add in ames oil every other oil change (every 3500 to 5000 miles), and that should make the oil changes go from 1400 miles to approximately 3500 miles. This is very frustrating!!! this vehicle shouldn't need oil changes until 7500 miles!! could you please look into this?.

65 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

The engine is burning too much oil too quick and woburn Toyota services refuse to research deeper for the problem, I have all extra warranties and they say it is normal. It is not normal the amout of oil the car is consuming.

66 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 01/19/2012

My 2008 rav 4 all wheel drive burns about 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles. I brought the SUV to muller Toyota in clinton,NJ on 01/19/2012 for oil consumption. Tech checked oil. Oil level was 1/2 quart low. The tech topped off oil. I pick up rav at 1:30 p from dealer and checked oil level. The tech over filled the oil about 8 oz. I verified this with customer service he said he did not know why tech would over fill it. The dealer would like to recheck oil level in 1000 miles. However, tech over filled it so when I bring it back they can say see it doesn't burn that much oil. I wonder if the extended warranty has anything to do with it. Mileage 71393.

68 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2012

Engine is consuming oil. I bought the Rav4 2. 4 engine 2008 brand new. Very well maintained by the dealer's records. At the beginning of 2010, I start noticing that the oil level is getting lower every time before the oil change. I thought it was due to some leak. The dealer said there are no leaks in the engine oil and the oil consumption rate is acceptable. I don't understand how it would be, but they argued that it is stated in the owner manual. It got worse by time, now I have to add a full quart or more between oil changes just to avoid engine damage. I owned many cars before, older models, none of them required adding oil before the next oil change. After researching the matter, I found that it is not only my car. Toyota knows about the issue but does not want to fix it. I even found a document with VIN's of the cars affected by the issue TSB-0094-11 (piston ring?) consuming that much oil is not normal, and I believe will shorten the engine's life and is really bad for the environment. I bought the car because of it's reputation of being dependable and it has a big name behind it. I hope someone ask Toyota to step up and fix this problem.

69 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/21/2011

My 2008 rav 4 is burning oil at an unusually high rate. This began last December when my oil light flicked on when I was braking. When I brought it into a service station they said I had no oil. I have since brought it back to my dealer a few times for the light coming on and being out of oil. I have already done the oil consumption test back in may but Toyota felt that it was normal for my car to have lost oil in 1569 miles (per the owners manual). I just had it back at the dealer because after driving only 3,200 miles since my last oil change, my oil light flicked on again. When I checked it there was no oil in the vehicle. I know there is a TSB out for this issue with my car, and several other models of Toyota, but since I don't have an extended warranty on my vehicle the dealer/service dept told me to contact Toyota directly. Toyota did not acknowledge that I have an issue and continued to quote me page 314 of the owners manual and the oil consumption criteria on the page. For some reason they could not see the notes from my dealer from earlier in the day that I had run out of oil after 3,200 miles. The customer service rep actually said to me "what is it you want us to do?" I told him I want you to fix my car that you know has a problem as described in the TSB. I was told to once again do the oil consumption test with my dealer. I agree with others, if my car is set to go 5000 miles without an oil change, but I only went 3200 and had no oil, how can they not recall the vehicle or be forced to fix this known issue?!! Toyota, I feel, is jeopardizing mine and my family's safety by not correcting this issue. What disturbs me greatly is that the light doesn't come on and stay on, it flicks on when you are breaking so if you miss it, you will not know you are out of oil. A recall is in order and I hope it occurs before my engine is blown!!.

70 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2011

Oil consumption is too much. It uses about 1 quart of oil in every 500 miles. From what I am hearing, this is a very common problem and Toyota is doing nothing about it. I believe a recall is in order. Thank you.
