6 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2014 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 08/15/2019

Greetings and salutations. This communication is about the defective torque converter in the transmission that Toyota is aware of. I acquired the vehicle at about 33,000 miles and I noticed that it had this problem of a slight intermittent shudder, what some would call a shake or vibration, during acceleration coming from the transmission. It did not affect the performance of the vehicle so I ignored it mainly because I did not have the time to address it. As time went on the condition became much more noticeable and Toyota sent me a letter explaining that they were aware of the problem affecting some of their vehicles and that they were extending the warranty. I have attached photos of this letter with this communication. I found out that this extended warranty is considered a courtesy and certainly it covered up to a considerable mileage however my position is that because this condition existed at early mileage and grew considerably worse with extended mileage and time, that perhaps you may consider that Toyota should correct this problem regardless of mileage or time. My vehicle is past the allowable mileage in the extended warranty. I know Toyota doesn't want to hear that but perhaps this problem that they are aware of is found in a relatively small number of vehicles that it may not cause them much grief at all. Thank you.

7 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2010 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 05/23/2019

When driving the vehicle at approximately 40-50 mph, in 4th gear, a vibration or shudder is felt in the transmission. It is a slight loss of power. It can be felt intermittently as long as you are holding a constant speed. If you manually or automatically shift down it stops, but as soon as you maintain speed again it will come back. It doesn't necessary matter which roadway you are driving on. From my understanding there is a malfunction in the torque converter. A "lock-up clutch" design flaw in the damper plate and springs. This is already a known issue for some models and recalls have been issued. It is becoming a bigger, more wide spread issue and the recall needs to be expanded to include all models with this problem.

9 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2013 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 06/08/2017

Torque converter failed suddenly while crossing a highway bridge with no breakdown lane. No prior warning, just sudden rpm jump to redline and no ability to accelerate. Was able to coast across the bridge to an exit ramp. Dealer diagnosed the problem as a transmission failure. Since car was out of warranty, we brought it to an independent shop who found it was actually the torque converter. The spline connection to the stator was broken, either the weld broke or the overrunning clutch gave out. This is the second torque converter in the car. The first was replaced due to a shuddering issue 2 years ago at 45,000 miles. This failure occurred at 78,000 miles. Toyota denies any responsibility since the second failure occured outside the 1 year repair warranty. Independent research shows this likely isn't isolated and is related to defects with the similar camry torque converter. Transmission was torn down and rebuilt out of precaution and no damage was found, thus the failure was entirely due to a defective torque converter. I brought the part to the dealer so that they could witness the failed part. Toyota also confirmed that there was no preventative maintenance required on the transmission.

13 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2001 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 12/22/2009

On December 22nd, I experienced slipping transmission problems. I took it to our local Toyota dealership, and was told that there was no problem. I then took it to a independent transmission shop. I learned that that my transmission was destroyed, and had to be replaced. A rebuilt transmission was installed. I still had problems, and upon further investigation, the torque converter had to be replaced. With the torque converter replaced, I drove my Toyota rav 4, only to experience more problems. I personally began invesgating the problems with Toyota rav's, and learned of all of the other complaints logged against Toyota, due to transmission problems. It has been 3, almost4 months, and my Toyota is currently in the shop, getting a shift solenoid. I called Toyota, for assitance, and was told that it was not covered under warranty. Currently, I have over $4700 in repairs to this vehicle.

14 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2003 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 04/24/2009

I had a 2003 Toyota Rav4. On April 24th 2009 I pulled out into traffic and my transmission made my car stall almost causing an accident. That was the first time that my transmission acted it up. The torque converter burned up in it. This is a very serious problem and many people have had the same issue. Toyota needs to do something about. A company on ebay rebuilds the defective ecms told me that Toyota has a real big problem on their hands and that they have rebuilt tons of the ecms. The consumer stated she had to take the vehicle back 3 times, because the vehicle was not shifting properly. Updated 03/24/10.

There were no warning signs prior to the failure. The vehicle had undergone regularly scheduled maintenance before the crash occurred. The weather was dry on the day of the crash. The vehicle was released back to the contact; however, it had to be taken back to the shop due to riding roughly when placed into overdrive. The dealer stated that the torque converter was locking everytime the transmission was placed into overdrive. A police report was filed. There were no injuries and the contact was not cited. The current mileage is 17,690 and failure mileage was 17,687. Updated 5/13/08 the dealer determined there was a problem with the overdirve. Updated.

16 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2001 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/28/2008

I have a Toyota rav 4 4wd 2001 model. At 47,000 miles I had an engine replacement done by lynch Toyota under warranty. 25,000 miles later vehicle was diagnosed with a cracked flex plate. Repair was done by aamco and in their written report they state that due to an alignment dowel that was cut off when lynch replaced the engine, the engine became misaligned and the flex plate cracked. In addition the torque converter also had to be replaced. The reports were handed to lynch and their service manager does not accept responsibility for this and reported that the cracked flex plate was more than likely due to poor materials. I still have the flex plate and would like to know if there is a way to have it checked to find out if indeed it was made from poor materials. Aamco don't appear to believe this to be the case.
