1 Speed Control Springs problem of the 2009 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 08/07/2019

I was parallel parking the 2009 rav 4 in yellow springs ohio. With my foot on the brake I was straightening the car out with the gearshift in one when the car accelerated, jumped the curb and hit a vertical sign post that identified the parking spot as a handicapped spot. There were no injuries and the air bags did not deploy. There was approximately $1800 damage to the car which was repaired and driven until a similar accident on 5 Jan 2020 which will be filed in a separate complaint. A complaint was lodged with Toyota who investigated, readout the edr/vch data, test drove the vehicle and concluded there was no defect.

2 Speed Control Springs problem of the 2012 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 12/18/2014

On Thursday 18 December, my wife and I left springfield, missouri to dallas, texas to visit our family for the christmas holiday. We were driving our recently purchased 2012 Rav4 with approximately 33,000 miles which we purchased in late September 2014. We stopped several times during our trip to refuel and allow my wife, who is 6 month pregnant, a chance to stretch her legs. For much of the trip, I used cruise control when possible at varying speeds from 65 mph (in missouri) to 75 mph (in parts of oklahoma). At approximately 4:30 pm, while driving through tushka, oklahoma we approached a stoplight where the speed limit dropped from 65 to 45 mph. The light was red, a semi was stopped at the light, and I attempted to apply the car¿s brakes. As I did so, the car felt as if it was fighting my attempts to stop it. I had to keep both hands on the wheel, and I do not know if the cruise control disengaged. As I approached the semi, I pressed harder on the brakes in order to stop my vehicle. Finally with less than a car length, my car came to a full stop. With my foot still pressed firmly on the brakes, both my wife and I heard the car begin to make a high-pitched noise. I immediately put the car into ¿park, at which point the engine began to rev and I saw that the rpm gauge on the car rose to 7-8,000 rpm. At this point, I turned the car off at the ignition switch. My intent was to re-start the car and safely pull over after we proceeded through the intersection. However, at this point the light turned green and, as I restarted the car, we were hit from behind by another vehicle. On Friday, the 19th, I took my vehicle to Toyota of lewisville (TX) where they proved unable to diagnose the problem. I was contacted by a representative on 12/29/2014 who informed me that nothing would be done unless the event "replicated" or someone had been injured.

3 Speed Control Springs problem of the 2008 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 12/17/2011

Was at a complete stop at a signal. Had foot on the brake. Engine surged to approx 6500 rpm plowed into the vehicle in front of me. I climbed on the other vehicle. Car would not stop moving until I turned and pulled out the key from the ignition. Airbags did not go off. Reported incident to tarpon city officer, while the accident report was written up. My daughter and I were pretty banged up. Don't know if the other vehicle reported injuries. The rav was not drivable. Had to have it towed to suntoyota for repairs. Reported incident to sun Toyota service and body shop Dec 22, they asked me what I wanted done about the problem. Called Toyota 800 331-4331 case #[xxx], 12/22/11 promised to call back in 24 hrs case worker [xxx]. Talked to [xxx] at Toyota headquarter in California. Still waiting for a response from Toyota. I don't feel safe in this vehicle now. I can't sell it in good faith, because of the product liability. I am thankful there was a car in front of me. The tarpon springs christmas parade was in progress and there were a least a dozen kids in the crosswalk in front of us. What a christmas present my rav would have given some parents if my car had hit these kids. Just an fyi. I had a perfect driving record for 35 years until this happened. Thank you Toyota! Toyota needs to man up before innocent people are killed. I forgot this is big corporation, they don't care, as long as it doesn't effect their bottom line. 4 Speed Control Springs problem of the 2009 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 07/17/2010

On July 17, 2010 husband and I were driving our "leased" 2009 Toyota Rav4 on busy highway leading to and from the beach. We were in weekend traffic, moving a car length every 10 minutes. This should take us 5 minutes to drive on this road but this day it took us over 30 minutes! sitting in traffic, my husband's foot on brake, car makes grinding noise (like we had car in neutral revving the engine). Car lunged forward hitting car in front of us, bounced back, lunged forward a 2nd time hitting car. Realizing damage we turned car off. 911 called. Took car immediately to dealership, informed them of mishap, showed them our slight damage to the car, got loaner car till 9/8/10 when investigating company took out black box. Investigator ruled it "driver error". We were made to remove car from their lot. Husband nor I will drive car - it is a death trap (even though we took it to dealership when recalled in the spring). Will not let anyone drive as passenger in this dangerous car. We continue to pay our $280 monthly payment. Wrote to Toyota president and Toyota investigator. We would take a replacement (this is a leased car). We are "deathly" afraid of this car. We were not even moving and this car accelerated. Now we are charged for this accident. I would not be able to go on if my husband should one day decide to drive this car and it accelerated while he was driving. He may be killed and take other peoples' lives with him! this was definitely "sticky gas pedal" problem with a Toyota vehicle!!! updated ivoq 10/15/10.

5 Speed Control Springs problem of the 2009 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 11/01/2009

I purchased a new Rav4 2009 Toyota and experienced unintended runaway acceleration on three separate occasions. It was first brought to a Toyota dealer in sandy springs, atlanta and was told that the rotors were warped. They were replaced but soon after that repair, it accelerated out of control again and was brought to delray Toyota where I purchased the car. They kept it for 5 days and called to tell me there was "nothing wrong" and unless they experienced the problem during a test drive there was nothing they could do. I had someone drive the car back to my home and it is presently sitting in my garage. Soon after the third incident I was called by the dealer and was told to bring it in. The car was towed to delray Toyota and they told me that the recall did not pertain to my car because the VIN # didn't qualify for replacement of the gas pedal which was recalled on other rav 4's . It was again returned with no repair of this serious safety issue and is presently unusable because I fear that this unintended acceleration problem could cause a serious accident effecting me and others. Updated 04/21/10.

6 Speed Control Springs problem of the 2008 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 08/15/2008

I was attempting to pass a semi on an uphill in my new 2008 Rav4 when the accelerator became stuck. I had floored the gas pedal since I was going uphill and passing, but when I eased my foot off the pedal remained pressed to the floor. I had entered a single lane construction zone and was accelerating rapidly. I stomped on the accelerator hoping to spring it loose and tried the brakes, to no avail. As I was reaching speeds well into the 90's and within seconds of plowing into the traffic ahead of me I reached down and grabbed the gas pedal and pulled up on it. It did come up then and I was able to slow the car down in time to avoid crashing. I was terrified and thought I would die. I took it to the dealer we had purchased it from and they insisted it was caused by my floor mat and that it was my fault since it was not a Toyota floor mat. I told them there was nothing obstructing the pedal when I reached down for it, it was simply stuck. They continue to blame the floor mat, my car has not been put on the recall list and it scares me every day to drive it. I never, ever floor it and now know to put it in neutral should it happen again---although I have heard some people crashed because they could not get the car in neutral. I am very upset that Toyota blameshifts and dodges the issue by blaming the mats and refuses to do anything about it. Their recall hotline told me it is my problem since my car is not on the recall list. I did buy their mat after the incident, only to be told later that I should remove it since it could cause accelerator entrapment. My dealer still blames the whole problem on my non compliant mat even though they recalled their own mats, too. It is very disturbing to find out that this has been happening to so many others and going on for a long time. So many deaths and accidents, and I easily could have been one. We have bought 5 Toyotas from this dealer and have had no support and have been treated rudely.

7 Speed Control Springs problem of the 1999 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/01/2007

I submit that the most recent recall (Jan. 2010) for sticking gas pedals extends to older year make/models of Toyota vehicles. My 1999 Toyota rav 4's gas pedal has been sticking now for about 3 years, mostly in the winter. I press it and it gets stuck and I have to push my foot down harder on it to accelerate. However, the pedal does spring back okay, at least at this point. I've had it lubed recently and that didn't help at all.
