Steering Problems of Toyota RAV4 - part 1

I was stopped for one minute in a drive-thru, and when I took my foot off the brake to accelerate, the vehicle stalled. It told me "engine stopped power steering low". I moved out of the drive-thru in neutral, turned off the car then turned it back on. Everything was okay and had no issues. At the time of the accident, my windshield wipers were on. My eninge's auto stop/start was also on. There was a safety risk because my car stalled out when starting up, causing me to have to turn off the car and turn it back on while stopped. I have not been able to reproduce the problem with my dealer yet. I have not had the vehicle inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives? I did not have any warnings of this incident. I got a "engine stopped power steering low" message when the issue occurred.

1. System failure & availability: vehicle's automated driver-assist (lane tracing/keeping assist) and steering modules failed. The vehicle is intact and available for inspection under a strict spoliation hold at an independent facility. 2. Safety risk & injuries: on a curve at ~50 mph, the automated steering suffered a violent uncommanded intervention, overrode human control, and jerked the wheel out of the driver's hands, causing a head-on collision with a tree. Injuries required immediate ambulance transport. Diagnoses include a concussion, a severe large left leg hematoma with extreme swelling, open wounds, and deep tissue trauma causing foot numbness. Problem reproduction: the vehicle was rendered a total loss and is non-operational, preventing physical test-driving. The defect is expected to be confirmed forensically via electronic diagnostics. Onboard modules contain recorded pre-crash steering torque discrepancies and vehicle control history (vch) metrics showing the automation overrode manual input. 4. Inspections conducted: the manufacturer's corporate liability division opened an accident investigation. A signed imaging authorization form is executed; corporate technicians have contacted the driver to finalize the date to download event data recorder (edr) logs at the yard. The auto insurer explicitly refused to inspect the vehicle or download data, citing a 4-month policy lapse. 5. Prior warning symptoms: no dashboard warning indicators occurred immediately preceding the crash. Intermittently, vehicle logs from April 2025 show an electronic control malfunction alert and master warning directing a dealership visit for safety module failure. While driving my 2015 Toyota Rav4 xle 2wd (2. 5l, about 207,000 miles), the electric power steering assist failed instantly with no warning, making the steering wheel feel locked. At the same moment, the infotainment screen went black and rebooted. It has happened at freeway speeds and at low neighborhood speeds, including on 9/14 and 9/15/2026, and also more than once last year (2025). No warning light or messages appeared beforehand. An obd2 scan at autozone on 9/15/2026 found no active or pending trouble codes, and battery tests at autozone and walmart auto care passed. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer. The failed component is unknown. My best assessment is the eps control unit, because the symptoms match NHTSA recall 15v144000. I only learned of this recall on 9/19/2026. A sudden loss of steering at any speed puts me and other drivers at serious risk of a crash. The vehicle is available for inspection.

Idling, received a warning of "engine stopped. Steering power low". Trying to restart the car - it would start up then immediately shut down w/ the same error. Letting it sit for 15 minutes allowed it to reset and start again. It was raining at the time, wind shield wipers were on if that matters.

I own a 2024 Toyota Rav4. At approximately 38,300 miles, an authorized Toyota dealership diagnosed a failed rack-and-pinion/steering rack assembly that required replacement. Before the repair, I began noticing a squeaking noise when turning the steering wheel. The noise became progressively louder over time. The symptoms continued to worsen until the vehicle was inspected by the Toyota dealership. The vehicle has been regularly maintained, and there was no collision or other known event that would explain this failure. The steering rack required replacement only about 2,200 miles beyond Toyota’s 36,000-mile basic warranty. Because the rack-and-pinion assembly is a critical steering component, I am concerned that this may represent a premature failure and potentially a safety issue if similar failures are occurring in other 2024 Toyota Rav4 vehicles. I am submitting this complaint so the issue is documented and can be compared with reports from other owners. I have dealership repair documentation confirming the diagnosis and replacement of the steering rack assembly.

We were driving down the highway passing another vehicle when we lost steering and the dash said "steering power loss". We pulled to the side of the road where the vehicle stalled and would not restart. Probably 10-15 minutes later the vehicle started and we eventually made it to our destination. It was quite scary trying to get to the side of the road, in heavy traffic, and pulling over where there really was no shoulder, and not knowing whether the car would eventually restart or what. Although 2019 Toyota Rav4's have been recalled for this very issue, for some reason our VIN is not listed.

We purchased a used 2014 Rav4 (VIN [xxx]) a few months ago. During a trip to the store my wife all of a sudden found it extremely hard to steer and almost went into a ditch! (thank god she didn't). It was a blessing that she didn't hit anything or anybody when this happened. It was close to home at the time so I came there to help. I was barely able to get the vehicle home because it was so hard to steer. I saw the power steering warning light on the dash and upon further review figured out that the electric power steering (eps) electronic control unit (ecu) which assists with ease of steering, has failed. I googled the issue for my vehicle and it turns out there is a safety recall for failure of the esp ecu on the 2014 model year Rav4. However, when I entered our VIN into the system, our particular Rav4's VIN apparently isn't one that falls into those that are covered by the NHTSA campaign 15v144000 recall. With this esp ecu failure being the exact part that the 15v144000 recall is for, I tried contacting Toyota customer experience center at [xxx] to see if they would authorize the repair in light of this failure being the same as those vins that are covered under the recall. They declined to authorize the repair. Chiante told me that "Toyota likely would have covered this repair if the vehicle had been serviced at Toyota dealerships throughout its life". The esp ecu board either works or it doesn't and it was working when we bought the vehicle and now it doesn't. This is a significant safety hazard and the vehicle is not safe to drive with this esp ecu failure. It is estimated to cost $1,500 or more to repair and that is about 15% of what the car is worth! aside from not being able to afford this repair on our own, this esp ecu failure is exactly the same issue as other 2014 Rav4s but Toyota is refusing to cover the repair because our VIN isn't in the list. The contact owns a 2023 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that while driving at 46 mph in heavy rain, a warning message indicating that the pre-collision sensor was blocked and needed to be cleared, was displayed temporarily, and the contact continued driving. The contact stated that the vehicle suddenly lost motive power shortly after, and the message "steering power is low; please contact dealer" was displayed. The vehicle stalled and failed to restart. The following day, the contact's husband successfully restarted the vehicle, but the vehicle immediately stalled again, displaying a "pre-collision malfunction; please call dealer" message. A local dealer was contacted, and the contact spoke with a receptionist regarding the battery, but the vehicle was neither diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer had not been made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 58,829.

While driving the 2019 Toyota Rav4, I found that the steering wheel was getting hard to turn and the car kept making grinding sound when turning. Due to I was short on time, I asked an old mechanic friend to check the Rav4 out before my road trip. He was unable to get the vehicle back; therefore, I used my other vehicle. While I was out of town the mechanic contacted me, and ask if the car had been in water and I replied no. He suggested that I might want to see if there’s a recall. I googled recall for Rav4 vehicles and found that a recall had been issued for certain groups of power, steering boxes. This may allow water to enter the box that could corrode and cause loss of power steering that could cause an accidents. I’ve reached out to several Toyota representatives with this issue, but have been unsuccessful and getting them to see that this car may have been overlooked.

While driving 65 mph, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. Additionally, the rearview camera image was reversed before becoming inoperable. The abs, awd, and engine warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, and an undisclosed fuse was replaced. The mechanic made the contact aware of NHTSA campaign number: 15v144000 (steering). The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and scheduled an appointment with the dealer for the recall repair of NHTSA campaign number: 23v734000 (electrical system). The failure mileage was approximately 189,000.

After driving for approximately 30-minutes in a heavy rain I pulled over and the automatic engine shutoff feature activated while I was waiting to go inside for an appointment. When attempting to restart the car, the engine would start but then shut off showing a "low power steering" warning message on my dash. The problem persisted for approximately 15-20 minutes. Eventually after about 10 attempts to restart the engine, the car started back up and drove fine the rest of the day. I have heard of this happening to many other Rav4s on the autosafety. Org website and it causes me concern, especially if this problems causes the car to stall in high speed traffic in the rain. It is my understanding that this maybe a problem with the mass airflow sensor getting wet in heavy rainfall.

I was in a drive thru and my car had been idling for less than 5 minutes in the rain and started shuttering really bad with my roms dipping low. I put the vehicle in park and the the entire vehicle shut off and would not stay on without dying. For the next 20 minutes everytime I tried to start it it shut off immediately no matter what I would do. The vehicular kept telling me “engine stopped steering power low”. It let me put the vehicle in accessory mode and was fine but my steering wheel remained locked. After about 30 minutes I was able to get the vehicle to start and pull up about 15 feet before it shuttered and I put it in park and it died again. I had to get it towed to the dealership.

Before o had taken my Rav4 into Toyota for the recall a aaa tech. Had replaced the battery after jump starting it. There was nothing wrong with the sensors or anything else but after the battery was replaced all the electric sensors that are for lane change warnings and cruise control etc. Stopped working. I took vehicle into Toyota of santa maria and was told that I needed to pay for the sensors that had failed. They told me that I was responsible and I do not believe I am when aaa had just replaced my battery and only after that did the sensors have an issue. I do not feel safe driving my car now because all the sensors aren’t working anymore.

" an initial inspection by an independent mechanic indicated that the electrical power steering and the rack and pinion assembly needed to be replaced. Subsequently, the vehicle was taken to a dealer, where diagnostic testing confirmed a defective power steering system. Following a software update performed by the dealer, the warning symbol transitioned to red, accompanied by an audible alarm and a significant increase in the physical force required to steer the vehicle. Restarting the vehicle temporarily reverted the warning light to orange and restored steering functionality. We were informed of safety recalls for our Toyota rav 4 2009 . We called the local toyaota dealership for the recalls and was told on the phone after we dropped it off that they did the inspection to make sure the recalls could be completed and informed us that they could ,but they needed to keep overnight because they had to order the parts. Prior to dropping the vehicle off the car was able to be driven and no known issues were visible. Received call following told to come pick it up and that they officially refused to perform the recalls repairs. They stated that excessive structural damage and unsafe to drive to this degradation. Because the structural rust is directly in the exact suspension components targeted by this safety recalls. The vehicle cannot be remedied under standard recall procedures. By refusing the repair without providing an alternative solution the manufacture is failing its federal obligation to remedy a known safety defect. The vehicle is currently trapped in a regularity deadlock. It can not legally or safely be repaired. It is now deemed unsafe to be driven period. When the dealership gave the vehicle back, they wanted us to sign off and yes we refused because they told us it was inspected and was going to be repaired. When they did the inspection it is known that they have to bang , wrench and or pull on these parts to check to see if recall can be completed. Which they told us it could. When the vehicle was picked up we immediately noticed that the steering wheel was no longer in the correct position and that it was making an extreme screeching sound. We did not reach back out to the dealership as we feel they definitely caused more damage and already treated us poorly. We are requesting that the NHTSA intervenes to compel Toyota to provide an alternative remedy. Either structural vehicle replacement or a kb buyback to remove this 100% unsafe vehicle from the road. Because the structural rust is directly impacting the exact components .

During the day after driving in rain in a 2023 rav 4 le awd with 19000 miles car turned off. I was parked with it idling and with no warning stalled. I turned on multiple times and it kept stalling out. Finally a message appeared on dash "power steering low". After inspecting under hood and seeing all fluids ok I tried car again (maybe 10 min) and it started. Drove around parking lot it was fine. Drove to my mechanic. No error codes, battery was in good shape. This is very concerning. Suspect water in a hard rain somehow got in car. I was on major roads prior to parking, no huge puddles. Others online have mentioned this issue with no real answer and fears this will occur again while driving. Needs a recal.

The steering will drift or pull to the side while driving down the road.

The steering light comes on , and "engine stopped, steering power low" comes on. The car just stops, usually when I've braked and come to a compete stop, and just completely shuts down. It's done it in the middle of traffic, I don't know why it's an issue.

Car is out of alignment resolutions in the rear passenger tire to wear down at an abnormal rate. Had the vehicle inspected by a local mechanic and two different dealerships. All three inspections came back with the same answer. The camber and the toe for the right rear tire can not be set to a center good alignment. Leaving it in the red zone that will result in excessive tire wear, handling and safety problems.

On two separate occasions, my car has shaken violently and stopped both times while idling one in my driveway one at a stoplight and then an alert that says engine stopped steering power low came on.

This 2025 Rav4 will randomly move or jerk to the left while driving straight. It does not matter where you are in relation to the center of the lane. Sometime the movement is gentile and other time it is very strong bordering on violent. It will do the same thing with the lane keeping assistance, and pre-collision warning active or disabled. This issue could cause an accident if the jerky movement happened at the wrong time with another car alongside or approaching from the opposite direction. The movement has pushed me across the line a couple of times and it has happened at 15 mph all the way up to 65mph. The dealer did an alignment which did not change the problem. Now they want $425 to recalibrate the forward camara which 'might correct the issue'. This could get very expensive very fast when it should be covered under warranty. There are no warning lamps or messages to indicate the problem. This is a dangerous issue not just an inconvenience.

After turning my car on and the car running for several minutes, the engine shut off on its own and it said “engine stopped steering power low”. This is the second time this has happened. The vehicle is available for inspection. My safety was put at risk because I am concerned about this happening while driving, or being stranded somewhere. I have not taken my vehicle in yet, but many other Rav4 owners have this issue from my internet searches. This has happened twice to me in the past two weeks. The vehicle has not been inspected. There were no warning lamps/messages/lights prior to failure.

Had safety inspection done when having oil changed on 3/5/26. Was informed by dealer that it needed both outer tie rod ends replaced has play in it. This came to a cost of $735. 00 with alignment. Of course not covered by vehicle warranty which is useless at this point. I have never had this problem on any vehicles I have owned since starting to drive in 1975. This is a safety and quality issue and I should be reimbursed. I will seriously think about about an american owned company in the future. Having friend at another dealership tco 3/18/26 I was away last week and SUV parked in garage.

On a rainy day after driving on the interstate, I pulled into a drive thru. Once there and idling for a few minutes, I tried moving forward and the car rough idled, shows message on dash "engine stopped, power stering low" and had reduced engine power and no power steering and then stalls out. I tried turning it back on and it stays on for less than 3 seconds and shuts off. I had it towed to the dealer and they say there are no codes. After reading online, multiple other users experienced the exact same thing when its raining, wipers were on and they were idling after a trip on the interstate. If this would have occurred on the interstate and I lost engine power and reduced steering, it would cause major safety concerns. There were no warning lights prior to the issue and the only thing that flashed for a second when the engine stalled was the power steering, check engine and battery light. Toyota checked the battery and said its at 100%. Dealer cannot identify and issue, but I couldnt drive, had no power steering and had to have the car towed.

When trying to start my vehicle this morning, the car was having a noticeable issue the minute I turned on the vehicle. It was making some weird noises under the hood, and it was starting to lose power. Then the engine would cut out and a warning would appear on my dash that read, "engine stopped, steering power low" thank god this happened while I was at home. What if this had happened while I was driving down the road, at a red light. I would have been a sitting duck in the middle of the road and would not want to put my kids or I in jeopardy of being hit.

‘voltage abnormality, power steering low’ error message has appeared three separate times. All while vehicle is idle at stop light or parked, last incident car was unable to restart immediately. All dashboard lights came on, including message saying parking hold unavailable. Mechanic confirmed no issues with 12v battery health and unable to recreate issue. Loss of power is risk to safety, possible draining of battery due to unknown issue.
