1 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2017 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/08/2020

Water pump leak I believe started around 21,000 miles. Along with the replacement of front brake pads I complained of right front side of car with squealing noise possible drive belt or dirty rotor. At one point both front rotors slightly warm to touch after 45 min city drive home, another time right rotor hot and left slightly warm. They replaced front brake pads not checking calipers or hose and just put on brake pads and said right tire worn and replaced both and said it will solve the problem. After a few days Toyota rep and told him the said intermittent squealing somwhat grind noise was back. Not taken seriously I reported to corporate and went to another dealer to do diagnostic checking calipers and found nothing. Around 50,000 miles I found powder next to drive belt. They discovered it was a leaking water pump and replaced my pump and drive belt. 41/2 months later the car had same squealing now rubber sound added, steering stiffer and hissing sound came from front of engine at light. Took in and couldn't find anything wrong in entire day 8 hrs. I drove away and by third light squealing for 25 mins and neighbors heard me coming, one couple reported loud at front right tire. I reported that immediately to justin at precision that my car was worse and turning steering wheel right and left is now happening as nieghbor reported but no return call. This car sound typically happens at braking at light and hitting gas at light on city streets drive at 40-50 miles per hr. But usually at lights can hear. Called justin after left shop car right and left turns squeak when turning steering wheel only one day did I hear two different sounds whirring noise and hissing sound 3 days apart at light stopped 3 weeks my car, jumped forward at a stop I've had it aligned new tires & still intermittent noise now worse Dec 2019 changed water pump and drive belt /sprayed engine down.

4 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2012 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 12/21/2012

I was driving westbound on I-70 around mp 129. This is just before glenwood canyon. There was a flashing icy road sign at which time, I signaled my intention to move to the right lane which I did. I slowed down and put my car in 3rd. This was just before a curve to the right where the road and visibility narrow. The right lane was completely iced over as I realized when I got around the curve. In front of me, I saw a pileup, both lanes of traffic were blocked. I tapped my brakes to slow down but because of the ice, I did not stop or slow down. I went around one car stopped in my lane to avoid hitting it from behind. I went around on the shoulder. I continued to pump the brake. Immediately in front of me was a sierra 4x 4 that was perpendicular to the lane of traffic and it was also blocking the shoulder. I plowed into it about the middle of the truck at a rate of anywhere of 25 - 30 mph. My airbags did not deploy. My dog and I were both restrained and we suffered no injuries. My car is in all likelihood totaled.

5 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 05/15/2012

There was a rumble in the rear @ 40 mph. I had maplewood Toyota check it 2-3 times, they said they couldn't hear it, car was fine; they checked the trans oil once and said it was fine. It's a closed system-you never need to change its oil. (I had asked this question several times over the years and they always told me that I never needed to change the trans oil & the manual does not list it either). They took it for a drive and checked it good-said that 1st gear was going, but it was fine to drive-come back when I couldn't stand the noise and they'd put in a new trans for $4,500. I was going out of town, they said ok, car will be fine. Since the rumble was so loud, 3 days later I got a second opinion at a transmission specialist's shop recommended to me by several friends. They put it up on a rack and tested it with a stethoscope type device. They said that the bearing was very bad and that I should not take the car out of town or drive it as it was not safe to drive and could stop at any time. They replaced m,w/s, u240/24e 00-up (cork); filter; bushing, a40 series pump; tc, Rav4, med stall, ink 14; center gear bearing, etc. When the Toyota technician checked the trans oil, I realized that it was not "a closed system"! also, the oil was black and I now know that it should be red. I think I should have been changing the trans oil all along and my transmission probably would not have failed. I think they should order a recall on all these transmissions - and pay for the work that I had to have done before my car failed on a freeway somewhere. A transmission should last forever, especially since half of the miles have been freeway miles and I drive my car very gently. I just put in new brake pads for the first time recently and there was still 20-30% left on them. Previously I had to pay Toyota $400 to repair the steering column-another defect that should be a recall.

6 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

At approx. 25000 miles,I started hearing a thumping noise while making right turns, I don't drive it that often, so I didn't think much about it, until it started happening more and more, I then had 31,000, I looked up the problem on the internet and seen it was the intermediate shaft and that it was a common problem with this make and year of the Rav4, I took it to a Toyota dealership and they said I needed the steering gear and lower intermediate shaft replaced , it would cost $2259. 00 plus tax for parts and labor. I refused the repair at that time, the vehicle was no longer under warranty . I called Toyota customer service and they agreed to pay for only the part, because of the low mileage. I took it back to the dealership, they repaired that and while there they also said my water pump needed to be replaced, it was covered under a warranty they gave when I bought the Rav4, this is another part the 2007 Rav4 has had numerous complaints about. I paid over $1,000. 00 out of pocket for a vehicle with only 31,367, for parts that Toyota knows are faulty, I am the only owner. I believe there should be a recall.

7 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 10/02/2010

The vehicle makes a clunking noise turning at low speeds. Looking at similar complaints it would appear the problem is with the Rav4's manufactured in japan. There is also a loud intermittent moaning sound coming from the rear of the vehicle, was told it could be the fuel pump. I have had it in to Toyota service several times while it was still under warranty but the cause could not be found.

8 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 07/24/2010

2006 Toyota rav 4 has developed a very distinct clunking sound and feel when turning the steering wheel. I never drive the car, and noticed it immediately when I had to drive it a week ago. I questioned my husband, who said it had felt like that "forever"!! when I searched online I was shocked to see that it actually is quite a problem! car now has 90-k miles. Last summer (at a hair over 60-k) the water pump went - out of warranty. Very poor design, as the engine must be pulled to replace the pump to the tune of $1,600!!!! my husband is not looking forward to questioning the dealer about the steering.

9 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 03/01/2009

I have had numerous sensor problems, replaced free of charge at this point. Had to replace wheel bearing and wiring due to corrosion, free of charge now other side has same wheel bearing, corrosion problem and they want $1000. 00. Have also had a klunking in steering column (bad knuckle joint) that techs have not found. Hear that would cost at least $800. 00. They also say water pump leaking and need replacement to prevent engine damage another approx. $1000. 00. I've been online and these are all problems discussed by other Rav4 owners. The tech told me there are not enough problems to incite a recall. Mean while I've had nothing but problems since I bought this vehicle and it doesn't even have 60k. Now they want 3k to fix current problems.

10 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 07/01/2006

I brought my 2006 Rav4 to the Toyota dealership for two different recall notices including the suspension and airbag. Upon inspection, they notified me the water pump needed replacing and that the steering column brackets were loose. They said this is a common problem and tried to tell me that it is caused by normal wear & tear. My last vehicle I had for over 190,000 miles and never had this problem. Upon researching, this seems to be a common problem. I was told this problem needs to be fixed immediately as failure to fix it could result in loss of steering control. Previously I have brought the loud popping noise to various Toyota dealerships and have never been told of this issue in 9 years. This issue would not have been caught if is wasn't for the recall on the airbag. Anything that appears to be a "common" issue in a vehicle that can result in loss of steering is a serious safety issue and should be recalled and fixed by Toyota at no cost to the consumer. The cost is estimated at $600+ to repair.

11 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 04/28/2006

When first driving my new 2006 Toyota Rav4, I noticed at slow speeds it would sometimes accelerate when I hit the brake. I attributed this to big feet and a new car where I did not yet master the relative positions of the pedals. I started driving with two feet, just as I was taught as a teenager in drivers ed. Occasionally, this has happened again in the ensuing 3 years. Until this unintended acceleration problem came to light in 2010, I thought it was just "operator error. " now, I am beginning to think there is some defect - maybe it's hardware linkages, but I suspect there is a software problem in the electronic computer of the car. I also had the steering mid-shaft problem after warranty and screamed until they fixed it under warranty for $50. There was also a "runaway" fuel pump service bulletin I made them cover as well. I have worked with Toyota quality engineers since the 1980s and am disgusted by their responses reported in this odi site. Toyota's claim to fame was there quality and customer focus. Looks like the current generation of Toyota people have lost this, and that points directly to top management there. Shame, shame, shame. As they say in japanese, they are "on shirazu" (do not understand their obligation to their customers).
