Failure Date: 11/16/2020

The contact owns a 2021 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the gear shifter disengaged, preventing the contact from shifting gears. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to Toyota of deerfield beach (1441 s federal hwy, deerfield beach, FL 33441) where it was diagnosed however, nothing was replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. 2 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2002 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/26/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2002 Toyota Rav4. While driving approximately 10 mph, the vehicle felt as if it switched gears independently. The contact depressed the accelerator pedal; however, the transmission failed to engage and the vehicle did not proceed forward. The contact depressed the accelerator pedal several times before the transmission finally engaged and the vehicle operated normally. The contact took the vehicle to a certified mechanic who was unable to identify the cause of the failure. The failure recurred. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 200,000.

3 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2003 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/18/2014

I was driving my 2003 Rav4, entering a highway when the transmission failed to engage immediately when I accelerated. It hesitated for a few seconds then finally lurched forward. I was very nearly struck by a vehicle on the highway because I was unable to accelerate as expected. Now the rav frequently behaves oddly when shifting, sometimes refusing to upshift, suddenly downshifting at inappropriate times. The dealer advises the problem is likely a defect in the electronic control module (ecm) as covered in a TSB. From research recently I have learned that this ecm defect was a known problem beginning in 2006. I am amazed there has been no recall to repair this very serious safety issue. Now it appears I will be on the hook for a very expensive ecm replacement. Even though I have religiously taken this vehicle to a Toyota dealer regularly for maintenance, they never once mentioned this known problem. Yet when I discussed this behavior with one of the dealer's service advisors yesterday, he seemed quite familiar with this issue. Please call for a recall on this issue.

4 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2002 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 08/10/2009

Transmission/ecm failure. Transmission would "flare" while accelerating. When shifting while accelerating, transmission would not engage and power was not transmitted to wheels. Engine would rev up for 5-10 seconds until transmission would violently engage in next gear. This was particularly dangerous while attempting to cross or merge with traffic, as the vehicle had no ability to accelerate during the event. Symptoms quickly became very regular/repeatable. Vehicle was repaired and the problem was identified as a faulty ecm module and damaged transmission.

5 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2003 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 05/31/2009

I have a 2003 Rav4 brought new at 0 miles with 92,000 miles never a problem or check engine light until may 31 09 on my way home from work the transmission did not want to engage properly. The car was taken to the dealers tech the next morning. They have always serviced this car they informed me that I needed a remanufactured 3122. 24 trans and a 1145. 89 ecu. I was never told that there was a problem with the ecu in this model or that a TSB had been issued. They was never a issue with the car before that one day yet these repairs are what I'm told I would have to pay for an issue that Toyota as it turns out is well aware of to the point of making and upgrade for the ecu but are not recalling. This is a safety is your trans just goes in traffic.

6 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 1998 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 10/29/2008

Not sure what category this falls into, but equipment seems like the most fitting: I have a 1998 Toyota Rav4. The vehicle has slightly high miles (approx. 121,000), it has always been maintained accordingly and has worked great until recently. While driving to work, via highway, fifth gear mysteriously would not stay engaged. Once placed into fifth, the gear would pop back out. In order to keep the transmission in fifth gear, it was necessary to physically hold the stick into position, otherwise it would pop out. Upon research into the problem, it was discovered that Toyota has not recalled fifth gear, although it has been an issue with the majority of their manual transmissions. The only acknowledgement of the anomaly by Toyota found was that of a "re-issue", not a recall. This could potentially be hazardous to the automobiles' driver, as well as others on the road due to an unexpected jerk caused by the gear not engaging. Another concern that arises is the fact that attention is diverted away from driving. I have heard that Toyota is notorious for issuing what I've heard called "silent recalls". If this problem falls into such a category it is assumed that Toyota does acknowledge the hazard and problem and would pay for the replacement of the gear, right? since the manufacturer's warranty is no longer in effect, the vehicle was brought to a transmission specialist and the fifth gear was replaced out of pocket. Many issues have come to fruition since the replacement, but that is a concern better brought up with the bbb regarding the "transmission specialists" rather than with NHTSA. Thank you for your time and consideration.

7 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 1999 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 11/13/2006

- while driving a Toyota rav 4 with 80000 miles on the odometer the transmission popped out of fourth gear and would not engage . She took the vehicle to the dealer, and while they were repairing the gear shift, they also determined that fifth gear needed to be repaired. At 12,000 miles the vehicle experienced the same failure while in 5th gear. The contact did not want the same technician to repair the vehicle because she was concerned that the vehicle will not be repaired correctly. Updated 03/19/07. 8jb.

8 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 08/05/2006

I have the 2006 Toyota Rav4 base model with an automatic transmission. I have noticed that the transmission is very sluggish to respond to braking, such that the engine sometimes continues to rev forward for a second or two even after the brake pedal is depressed. This leads to excessive braking distances. I believe this problem is the cause of an automobile accident that we suffered on 8/5/06. In dense highway traffic, I was about 20 feet behind an older Toyota pathfinder and had just accelerated from about 15 mph to about 25 mph, as the distance between the vehicles was growing. Then the pathfinder in front of me suddenly slammed on his/her brakes because another vehicle swerved directly in front of it. I slammed on my brakes too, but the Rav4 did not immediately begin to slow. Instead, I could feel the engine still pushing the car forward. The Rav4 finally did begin to slow down right about the same time the pathfinder came to a complete stop. As a result, we hit the now-stationary pathfinder in front of us at a speed of about 5 mph. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but the front end of the Rav4 was mashed in. I have driven dozens of different vehicles over nearly 20 years of driving experience, and I think every other one would have come to a complete stop well before the point of impact (as did the pathfinder in front of me, despite a vehicle cutting directly in front of it). This leads me to suspect there must be something wrong with the Rav4 transmission. The transmission should immediately disengage from drive whenever the brake is depressed, but there seems to be a dangerous time lag. When I took the vehicle to the dealership and explained what happened, they road-tested and examined the vehicle and said nothing was wrong. They claimed what I experienced was the vehicle down-shifting, which results in higher rpms but less forward motion. I don't buy it. I have tried jamming on the brakes to cause such downshifting and it doesn't happen.
