Two months after purchasing a 2011 Toyota Rav4 limted v6, the car showed three warning lights: the check engine light, the four wheel drive light, and the vsc (vehicle stability control) light while I was driving on a highway. After running a check engine light diagnostic, the problem was found to be the O2 sensor. My husband replaced the sensor, and the next day after driving roughly 10 miles on a rural local road the same lights came on again. These warning lights disable the four wheel drive and vehicle stability control simply due to an exhaust issue. This is unnecessary and dangerous for driving in any kind of inclement weather. After doing some research on the internet, I found this to be a very common problem among this make and model of Toyota. Reading the forums, it became apparent that any solution tried resulted in the same warning lights occurring again and again. . Read more...

Often after a cold start (all year round), stability control kicks in (with beep and stability control light coming on) after a few hundred feet of driving, resulting in one or more wheels applying the brakes and causing a jerk in the steering wheel. This happens on smooth surfaces and with normal acceleration where stability control should never activate. Has never happened at high speed because it always happens shortly after start, so always fully recoverable, but very concerning. Toyota (acton Toyota of littleton, MA) has failed to diagnose the issue.

The vehicle was taken in to replace a defective emergency break cable on 1/13/16. The vehicle was repaired at a local shop and when the vehicle was getting removed from the repair stall the side curtain air bags deployed. The vehicle was started and shifted into reverse, as the vehicle was shifted into reverse the side curtain air bags deployed. The vehicle was stationary on a flat floor at the time of the air bag deployment. I contacted Toyota and they inspected the vehicle on1/27/16, they concluded that the air bag system was operating properly at the time of the incident. A safety recall boe-curtain shield air bag sensor was completed on the vehicle on 1/19/12 according to the letter I received from Toyota after there inspection. I realize that Toyota only read the event recorder. There have been a few times the stability control lights would inadvertently blink at inappropriate times but never when there was a chance to get a diagnosis from a computer reading at a service facility.

I've been having an intermittent issue with my 2005 rav 4. When exiting a highway on a sweeping right curve exit ramp, the vehicle stability control light will start to flash and an audible beep can be heard in the cabin. This usually indicates the car is in a skid but I assure you I am in full control of the vehicle, in its lane. After 2 to 3 seconds of constant beeping the engine cuts power and applies braking to an individual wheel, causing the vehicle to lurch slightly to one side. Just as quickly as this happens, the car resumes normal operation and the issue ceases to exist. I have had several instances of this very issue in the past 2 months. Most happen at slow speeds (under 35mph) and on dry pavement. The vehicle suspension and alignment are within operating specification. I have noticed however, that the steering rack bushings are worn. This causes the entire rack to move about slightly within the constraints of its mount. To my dismay, Toyota does not sell replacement bushings for the steering rack on 2004-2005 model rav-4's, forcing owners to pay for a completely new steering rack. This is unacceptable from a brand that prides itself on reliability and reasonably priced maintenance. The safety of the vehicle is compromised by an substandard engineered components. Steering bushings; causing too much play and allowing the vehicle traction control system to inadvertently activate, causing a dangerous unsettling of the vehicle.

2007 rav 4 had 3 lights turned on (check engine light, stability control light and 4 wheel drive light), shortly after the lights came on, the breaks failed. Rav4 was taken to Toyota delearship for repair and after the technicians being confused by the lights, they determined that the break booster had failed. This issue is similar to the recent highlinder recall and I feel people's safety is at stake with the breaks failing.

Check engine light, vehicle stability control (vsc) light & car slipping light on & off while driving. Toyota dealer replaced oxy sensor & vsc computer, but still happens. Toyota doesn't have an answer. Vsc seem to work when lights are off, but understand that won't work when lights are on. Seems to be a problem with these vehicles as I've seem many complaints & questions from other vehicle owners on internet. Not having vsc working is great cause for concern in an SUV as SUV may roll causing injuries/death. Thank you.
When driving for longs periods, and some short periods including coming home from the dealer when the vehicle was brand new, the check engine, stability control, and 4wd lights come on in the cluster. The cruise control, 4wd, and stability control do not function when this happens. The dealer claims they could not find any codes and cannot fix it. This has been going on since March of 2007, and the warranty has expired. I feel this is a huge safety concern, as I have heard of other Toyota vehicles doing the same thing, and stability control is a safety feature.
