I was driving to work at 6 am on an interstate going 65 mph. When I heard a large "boom" sound. I felt a large rush of air and glass began to fall on me. (it was sunny and approximately 40 degrees). My all of my windows, including the sunroof, were all closed at the time of this explosion. This sound was a result of my sunroof exploding from the inside out. I immediately pulled over and checked for debris, or anything that may of caused this to happen. I found nothing. There was no other drivers around me, and no overpass I drove under. When looking at the car from the outside, the (front) sunroof looked like a volcano, rising up from the car with jagged edges around it. There is no possible explanation of why this happened!! I noticed that many other complaints from scion owners had the same occurrence with their sunroofs. I took the car to a certified Toyota dealer, and the service manager spent the day investigating the cause of this sudden explosion. All mechanisms associated with the sunroof were working properly and were not defected. After my experience and reading the experiences of other scion owners, I am concerned of why this hasn't been addressed by Toyota or the NHTSA? the noise of this incident caused my to swerve and panic. It was a very scary situation and could've led to an accident, injury or death of myself and/or other motorists. Why was the glass not safety glass? what would cause this to happen to a sunroof with no apparent cause?
I was very lucky that I nor anyone else was not injured from this occurrence. Please investigate this matter!
thank you!.

I own a 2007 Scion Tc and I was driving at approximately 35 mph on a business district street in the city when I heard a loud gunshot-type sound and the sound of broken glass on the roof of my car. I pulled over at the next intersection and saw that the front section of the glass panoramic roof had shattered and some of the metal parts of the assembly were knocked out of place. The wind deflector was also in the up position and parts of that assembly looked to be possibly damaged as well, although the sunroof had been completely closed at the time. There did not seem to be an impact to the roof glass by any object, and upon inspection the shattered glass looked as if it had exploded upward and the edges of the glass had cracked and broken away as if under stress from the outer edges. Went to the dealer, they said they had never seen anything like this before. Manager (service or general, not sure) declares nothing they can do as the car is out of warranty: purchased 4+ yrs ago but only 22,500 mi at time of incident. Car is not drivable with this damage so I filed a claim with my auto insurance, who declares this is not considered glass breakage (I. E. Windshield) so I must pay $500 deductible toward $892 for repair and replacement. I feel this is either a design flaw or glass defect and constitutes a serious safety issue which should be corrected by the manufacturer as well as reimburse me and my insurance company for all repair costs (my deductible and the portion paid by my insurance company including the rental car while my car was out of service to me). Honestly, I would prefer if this were caused simply by impact with an object, because under these circumstances I don't know that will feel safe in this car any more or confident that it won't happen again, perhaps resulting in more serious damage or even injury. I have contacted the manufacturer directly with my concerns, waiting for a response.
Sunroof shattered while driving. The sunroof was in the open position with windows up. Smooth, paved road with no vehicles in front or behind that could have kicked up road debris. While examining the shattered sunroof, no marks were noticed that would indicate the sunroof being struck by a foreign object. The wind deflector shows no signs of any type of damage. Both the driver and 6-year old passenger received minor scrapes and cuts due to glass falling into the interior of the vehicle.
I was driving my 2006 Toyota Scion Tc on interstate I-95n going about 70mph when my sunroof exploded and shattered. Glass came raining down on myself and my passenger and also hit the car directly behind me.

Was driving 2009 Scion Tc on highway no traffic around and glass roof imploded into vehicle with shards of glass falling into vehicle, it was like plate glass breaking not like safety glass, nothing appeared to strike vehicle to cause the break.

Loud pop occurred. Upon inspection the wind deflector piece of glass was shattered with no point of impact. No road debris was observed. The glass failed.
I was driving to work one day and my 06 Scion Tc wind deflector glass shattered into pieces all over the inside of the vehicle. I immediately pulled over. I later called Toyota and they said they had a recall on the wind deflector for 06 Scion Tc's but it didn't apply to my vehicle. They will not pay to fix the problem. I have even contacted corporate. Researching this, this same exact issue has happened to hundreds of other people.
I was driving 65 mph down rt 55 in new jersey. Suddenly I hear glass shattering and glass rains down on my head. The moon roof in my Toyota Scion Tc exploded for no apparent reason. Toyota says its not a defect and they wont fix it. I have to pay 2000 dollars to get it fixed. I don't have this money and glass should not explode for no reason. Not to mention I could have crashed my car and sustained bodily injury.
Taking a drive on a sunny day, I had my sunroof open and all of a sudden my husband and I heard a cracking sound. When we got home, we noticed the front part or wind deflector part of sunroof was cracked. Took it to Toyota and they said there must have been a pebble because the glass showed a point of impact. Eard anything hit the window, it just broke. Why is something that is supposed to be a wind deflector made of glass?I never even noticed this piece of glass that pops up and now I feel vulnerable for driving in the future,. Not to mention the almost $500. 00 that it will cost me to fix this Friday. This should be a warranted item or it should be made of a plastic material. I saw many complaints like mine. I believe it shattered from the wind just like the many complaints that I read. I loved my Scion Tc and now I am disenchantment with this car.
On February 19 2009, the sunroof on my 2008 Scion Tc shattered without warning. As I was driving at 40 mph on a paved road, with the windows up and the sunroof closed, a loud bang (similar to a gunshot) occurred. Glass sprayed all over the interior of the car. Outside of the vehicle, the wind deflector was stuck in the up position and the sunroof bulged. The posterior portion of the vehicle had scratches in the paint from the explosion. The dealership would not cover damage as warranty repair and insisted I go through my insurance. I had the vehicle repaired at an independent body shop and have the damaged sunroof in my possession. This isn't an isolated incident. There are other tc owners reporting the same issue.

I was driving up I-25, when the vehicle in front of me kicked up a rock. The rock hit the top of the sunroof, shattering it into pieces. A lot of sharp glass landed on myself the driver and in the passenger seat. The vehicles behind me were showered in glass. To repair this I had to purchase a costly new sunroof panel and I am going to have it clear brand so that if it happens again it does not injure any one. I received cuts from the broken glass falling on to me.

I was driving on the highway at about 45mph when I heard a loud explosion. I immediately pulled over thinking a tire had blown and found that the moonroof glass had shattered. The glass was bowed upward in the center indicating it had broken due to stress. The windshield and the wind deflector did not break at all nor receive any damage. The glass was not impacted by any foreign object.
Incident occurred on 9/30/08 at ~3:15pm. I heard a loud bang (sounded like a shotgun blast) while driving on the highway at ~60mph. My immediate reaction was to duck. . . I literally thought someone was shooting at me. After a quick second to collect my wits, I looked around and saw no damage. Once that "soaked" in, I realized I heard wind noise (I remember thinking that was odd because windows were up and sunroof was closed). I pulled back the sunroof screen and, to my astonishment, saw that the sunroof had spiderwebbed into thousands of tiny pieces. . . Pieces that were already starting to fly off into traffic behind me. I pulled over and got out to look at the damage. The sunroof looked like something had blasted it from the inside out. I cleaned up the glass the best I could on the side of the highway and headed straight for the dealer. I had heard of deflector shattering (recall was completed on my deflector), but not the sunroof. The dealer refuses to pay for the sunroof even though I have the extended warranty. They claim that it was caused by a road hazard. The weather was mild, nothing hit my sunroof from the outside and, based on similar instances filed here, I firmly believe there is a defect with the design. Toyota should do the right thing, fix this issue and honor their warranties.
I was driving home from work in my 2006 Scion Tc at approximately 5:30 pm. Going 60 mph when all of a sudden my rear sunroof window exploded. It sounded like a gun shot and ended up cracking the entire window, sending pieced flying behind me. I had the rear cover closed, so no debris was able to enter the vehicle. I just purchased the vehicle used from a dealership Saturday afternoon and this incident happened Monday afternoon. I took the vehicle back to the dealership and they said that I may have to pay to get it fixed. I do not agree with this, and something needs to be done about this issue since it seems to be occurring to numerous people. Also, I was not driving under an overpass and there was no sign of any object hitting the glass. It just simply shattered.
Bought a Scion Tc in may of 2008 and within a week of purchase, noticed a rattle coming from the moonroof assembly. Made appointment with dealership immediately for service, and brought it back several times, as well as opened a case with scion to investigate. No repairs have been done. Dealership and scion have been difficult and not at all helpful, got the major run around. Told there is nothing they can do because there is no TSB for the problem, and it is a "characteristic of the car" - they all rattle like that. (my vehicles assembly only rattles on the drivers side) concerned this might become a safety issue - this is one large pane of glass rattling over time and have read prior complaints on "shattering" moonroofs. Have filed for lemon law since this is a breech of warranty that no repairs have been attempted, but will not be heard in court until April of 2009. This is a safety concern.
Went to open driver side door when I heard a popping sound. Turned to see the hatchback glass crack and spider with a collapse in the center of the window. Temperature was 57 degrees at 7 pm. Defrost, a/c and heating were not being used at the time. No projectiles or bullets were found inside car. Crack started at top left corner, made its way across the top of the hatch and then crack down into the center of window. No cracks or chips had been noticeable to myself or others. Car was purchased mid August and has been garaged since date of purchase. Have found similar instances on website forums with other Toyota models as well as Scion Tc.
The rear window does not have a wiper. When it rains it is very difficult to see out the rear window. I have had to pull over during hard downpours because vision behind me was at 0.
