37 Traction Control System problem of the 2004 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 04/20/2011

Right after I purchased my vehicle (used) the vsc trac, trac off, brake lights & check engine lights came on randomly. Toyota ended up replacing the skid computer. It has been just over a year and it is now doing the same thing. It looses traction and won't accelerate. Toyota told me its not under warranty. This is a safety issue, the same one that the 2003 models were recalled for.

39 Traction Control System problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 04/11/2011

Vsc/trac lights are on, engine light is on. Toyota dealer tells me this is a common problem with 2003 Toyota Sequoia but there's no recall. The internet is aflame with Toyota Sequoia owners, 2003 model, dealing with repeated fixes for the vsc/trac lights and engine lights that come on after 111,000 miles.

40 Traction Control System problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 04/06/2011

Vsc lights came on after having the master cylinder and brake booster rebuilt. Now when braking occurs there is pulsation of the pedal and the vehicle pulls to the right under normal braking conditions (dry level paved road conditions) - this pulling is more severe if braking occurs when cornering. The concern is what happens during emergency braking?.

41 Traction Control System problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 04/03/2011

02 Sequoia -sun at 6pm driving at 75 mph on I 75 when vehicle suddenly slowed down then brakes started screeching lodly rattling. . Vehicale started to veer left and jerk. Skid light came on with beeping sound. Trac off and vsc lights also came on. I put my hazard lights on immediately held the steering wheel tightly and exited the highway. Once it was safe to stop I did so and shut the car off. Then I started the vehicle up again and satrted driving at 35mph. The lights were off at this point. In a few minutes they came back on and the events started all over again, I took my car to the tire shop for them to check the next day. They said tires were fine. Then took to the dealership for diagnostic, they said issue was a yaw rate sensor. Advised them that web had a lot of other people with the same incident. Asked if they would consider in pricing. They only gave me a 10% discount. Also called corporate they told me that my car was way past warranty and they could not help. Paid $1k to have it replaced.

42 Traction Control System problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 03/22/2011

Traction control system is spontaneously engaging causing sudden deceleration and momentary loss of control. Symptoms include grinding/clashing noise typical of traction-control engagement, beeping from dash (indicating system error or disengagement?), and "trac off" and "vsc trac" lights come on and stay on. Originally problem only occurred after an hour or more of highway speed driving, usually with cruise control active. Recently started occurring more frequently and at lower speeds. Also notice vibration during braking (similar to warped rotors) goes away when traction control is off.

43 Traction Control System problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 03/05/2011

2002 Toyota Sequoia limited vsc off/vsc trac problem. Lights go on w/clicking and brakes grind and lock up. This has happened 4 times. I was almost in a accident and was, fortunately able to control the vehicle to a safe stop. It is as if I have no control over this huge vehicle. I have it in the dealer now awaiting repair estimate and diagnosis of problem. I've been forewarned it will be very expensive. Toyota needs to fix this issue.

44 Traction Control System problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 03/05/2011

In December 2010 we took our Toyota Sequoia 2003 to fix the defects mentioned in the ea09006 NHTSA action number vicksburg Toyota dealership in vicksburg, ms. At the moment the dealership informed us that the ecu could not reflash. However, the ecu was not replaced as specified in the recall. A week ago, once again, the vsc ecu lights turned on. Again we took the car to the dealership and have been told that the ecu is completely damaged and I have to incur an expense of $ 650 to replace the unit. I've been trying to talk with Toyota, however, they have indicated to me that the new problem has nothing to do with the recall 1. Toyota evaded their responsibility to change the unit so that the problem was never corrected recall 2. If the recall required the unit was replaced by a new one could not reflash the unit. Toyota is putting the safety of my family and those close to our vehicle drivers when driven 3. We hope that the NHTSA can protect our lives and those who face these problems of lack of accountability of Toyota and its dealers.

45 Traction Control System problem of the 2008 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 03/01/2011

Abs and traction control failure due to failed right rear abs wheel sensor and wiring harness. Abs and traction control would initiate at random to include when pulling out into traffic without any wheel slip. The initiation of traction control while accelerating and merging with traffic caused some close calls with the loss of power and deceleration of my car. After random initiatiation the abs warning light would come on and the car would have no abs, traction control, or 4 wheel drive. Toyota service writer stated that this is becoming a common repair due to issues with corrosion. Service writer knew that both an abs sensor and wiring harness needed to be replaced as a pair as this repair is now "so common". If Toyota knows that this standard safety equipment is failing due to corrosion and obvious design issues they should be replacing at no cost to the owner.

46 Traction Control System problem of the 2005 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 02/14/2011

Trac lights came on one month ago at about 95 ,000 miles. Car had trouble shifting gears and gaining speed. A reputable car dealer (not Toyota) turned the lights off. Grinding stopped- car was fine. Th lights came on again today when engine started. Again, car had trouble gaining speed and changing gears at 99,000 miles. Warranty expires at 100,000 miles or seven years.

47 Traction Control System problem of the 2004 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 02/02/2011

We had tires changed, then the skid light came on we lost power on the freeway the car fish tailed my husband changed the fuel filter thinking that there was no way changing tires could make our 2004 Sequoia lose power, the problem still exists I am frightened to drive my car the light comes on I lose power at 70mph this could create serious accident. I have read lots of others experiencing same problem these should be recalled.

48 Traction Control System problem of the 2006 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 02/01/2011

The traction control / vehicle stability control initiates at very low speeds on dry and very stable surfaces nearly every turn I make. The loss of power to the wheels have left me stranded in front of on-coming traffic during left turns and nearly rear-ended on right hand turns. It appears the 2003 Toyota Sequoia's have been recalled for a similar problem: overly aggressive traction control when the vehicle loses power to the wheels it takes 4-5 seconds for the power to be restored and I have had several close calls with respect to being hit by other vehicles.

49 Traction Control System problem of the 2004 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 01/31/2011

My 2004 Toyota Sequoia is experiencing vehicle stability control issues that I believe pose a significant threat to my families safety. Under exceleration, the vehicle thinks it's losing traction and engages the traction control by reducing power. On numerous occasions while accelerating into traffic, the vehicle bogs down. This is hazardous for us, and for other drivers. This was an issue with the 2003 model of the Sequoia and Toyota issued a recall. I've contacted Toyota and they claim the recall doesn't apply to the 2004 model even though it's experiencing the same exact problem.

50 Traction Control System problem of the 2004 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 01/20/2011

On my 2004 Toyota seauoia the vsc trac light and trac off light are both on. They will not go off. So I don't know if it is working. I read on many forums and I am not the only expericing the problems. This is a safety issue and Toyota needs to correct it.

51 Traction Control System problem of the 2005 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 01/15/2011

Brake light indicator intermittently came on over several months (Jan - may 2011) and at various speeds. Sometimes at startup, other times at hwy speed. Since fluid was full and clean, did not take car in right away. Mentioned to dealer at 60k mi. Svc to diagnose. Toyota dealer diagnosed the source of the problem was a malfunctioning "electronic skid computer. " cost $122 to diagnose and $1120 to replace. I understand this computer controls the stability control and abs systems, so it is a potential safety hazard.

52 Traction Control System problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 12/22/2010

I am experiencing problems with the traction control system on my 2001 Toyota Sequoia. Unexpectedly, sometimes at high speeds, the traction control activates and can significantly affect steering and braking while driving due to strong grinding feeling during the traction control engagement. Again, this activation has no apparent cause as it occurs on flat dry pavement at various speeds. Luckily, I have been able to maintain control of the vehicle despite the significant effect this engagement has on the vehicle. At a minimum, there should be a longer delay between an initial warning light and the actual engagement of the system. There is no time to react with the current design. On my second trip to the local Toyota dealership, they have determined that the yaw rate sensor should be replaced. During my first visit, they could not determine the cause of the problem after plugging the car into their computers. I paid the diagnostic fee and hoped it was an isolated incident. Of course, it happened again about a week later (December 22, 2010 to be precise). I'm currently waiting for the part (yaw rate sensor) to come in as I must get the vehicle fixed.

53 Traction Control System problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 12/18/2010

2001 Toyota Sequoia vsc traction inadvertently turned on while driving on a straight away highway at 75 mph causing the vehicle to abruptly pull to the right, almost causing a crash. Luckily I pulled the steering wheel and car back into my lane and then exited and had the car towed to the dealer. This could have resulted a terrible crash and rollover. It was a very scary experience for me and the 7 witnesses in my car!!!!!.

54 Traction Control System problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/19/2010

I own a 2001 Toyota Sequoia sr5 limited 4x4. Since new this Sequoias vsc trac light would sometimes come on then reset itself when I turned the vehicle off. When the vehicle was taken to Toyota they could not find a problem. Last week with 62,000+ miles on the odometer I experienced a frightening event. I was driving straight approximately 20mph on a dry clear roadway when all off a sudden the "vsc trac" light illuminated and an icon of a vehicle skidding started flashing accompanied by a loud beeping noise. The scary part was that the Sequoia started pulling to the right accompanied by a loud grinding noise which could be heard and felt through the steering wheel. The brakes also had lost some of its stopping power when I applied the brakes to pull over. I initially thought I had a right front flat tire or I ran over something that was caught in my undercarriage or suspension system. After what seemed to be approximately 3 seconds the beeping noise stopped and the vehicles "vsc trac" and "vsc off" lights stayed illuminated on the dash and I regained control of the Sequoia. I pulled over and checked the outside of the Sequoia and found no damage. I continued to drive with the vsc lights illuminated without incident. After I turned the vehicle off everything reset and the lights were off until the same exact incident occurred the following day. It was good there were no other vehicles on my right side because there may of been an accident due to the violent pull to the right when the above condition occurs. Since the last incident I have not had any problems with the vsc, but I am taking my Sequoia to an authorized Toyota dealer on Monday because I fear this incident may happen again at a higher rate of speed and I may lose control of my vehicle. After reading numerous complaints on the internet this appears to be a major problem with a vast majority of 2001 Toyota Sequoias!.

55 Traction Control System problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/17/2010

My 2001 Toyota Sequoia traction control system/vehicle stability control system (vsc) or anti lock braking system (abs) seems to be failing. This problem started about a year ago. The problem is an intermittent ratcheting or grinding noise coming from the front of the vehicle which causes the wheels and steering to vibrate immensely and have feelings of lost control (stalling) while driving. This has occurred at all different road speeds and conditions.

56 Traction Control System problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/15/2010

I have owned a 2002 Toyota Sequoia since 2006. This problem began occurring in the winter of 2007 with the vsc, vsc trac, and abs warning lights all coming on. This kept continuing anytime I was driving in wet snowy conditions. I began to research this problem on line and it seems there are many cases of this on 2001-2003 Toyota Sequoias. I took it to a dealer and they couldn't find any computer codes relating to this issue. At the end of last winter the problem seemed to become worse. Even in dry conditions on dry pavement the vsc computer begins to take over acceleration and very often! and sometimes the lights come on and sometimes not. Again I researched and found there to be a Toyota recall on 2003 Sequoias only for the same problem that has been affecting my Sequoia! I called Toyota, they gave me a case # and told me to take it in to the dealer. I took it back to a Toyota dealer and again they could not duplicate the lights turning on or find any computer codes concerning the problem. That was approximately 5 months ago and still the problem persists leading up to yesterdays accident. I drove up to the mountains to go snowboarding. When we left the resort it was snowing very heavy. I noticed the abs, vsc, and vsc trac lights come on again, as I was expecting them to. We drove about 7 miles down the road then I was moving in to the left turning lane of a traffic light. Our speed was only 15-20 mph, and when I tried to slow down the wheels locked up and we began sliding. I let off the brakes and tried them again to no avail. I let off the brakes and tried to miss the vehicle in front of me by going to the left side of them over a small median as there was no traffic coming towards us in the intersection. But my rear tire bounced me off the median and into the vehicle. The damage was minor and there were no injuries. I believe this accident could have been avoided if the abs and vsc system was working properly. I believe the recall should include 01 and 02 Sequoias.

57 Traction Control System problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/15/2010

First vsc trac and trac off lights computer failure: March 20 2009 dealership found the skid control computer malfunctioned and was replaced under an extended warranty. Total cost of repairs $1521. Due to our extended warranty, we paid $50. Second vsc trac and trac off lights computer failure November 15 2010 received recall notice in mail. Made appointment with Toyota service. Since the computer was replaced previously during first traction control failure, they would not "update" the software in the computer, nor diagnose the cause of the failure. Customer service dept @ dealership did not even give me a chance to do the diagnostic work and told me that the diagnostic time would have to be "re scheduled" at a later date. Due to my taking the day off from work to do this recall repair, I left the dealership with no repair work nor idea as to why the computer failed a second time. This is my 3rd real issue with this particular dealership , and I vowed today to never buy another Toyota vehicle.

58 Traction Control System problem of the 2004 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/15/2010

Problem with ecu unit, vsc trac and trac off light coming on in vehicle. The brakes were recently changed and it is now making a screeching noise. Something is not right. When I purchased this vehicle and took it to Toyota for some other recall they told me that my ecu unit needed to be changed. The ecu unit is now on recall but they are restricting it to only 2003 model. I have a 2004 & it has the same problem the 2003 has. I feel sorry for all the money they had to pay out with other defects but I feel if there is a problem then they should own up to it and fix it. My vehicle is also losing power on turns and I think it is from this same issue based on the forums I have read. This can be dangerous especially when making turns in oncoming traffic. I would feel really bad for Toyota if I were to get in an accident for something they can own up to and just repair in good faith. Very frustrated consumer. Crash was missed by inches because the truck slows down on turns.

59 Traction Control System problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/14/2010

My 2001 Toyota Sequoia, vsc traction control engages in the middle of driving. The car shakes profusely, loud beeping noise, jerks and acts as though it"s not going to stop. I brought the car to Toyota last week they replace front brake pads, resurface the rotors, balance and rotated the tires. But that didn't solve the problem it happen again over the weekend, I took the car back to Toyota they said that there is no problem with it. This is a horrible experience I was on the freeway I am worried about my family's safety. I did a search online and there has been many other complaints online from consumers concerning the 2001 Toyota Sequoia vsc traction control system. Toyota refuses to acknowledge the problem because the 2001 toy Sequoia hasn"t been included in the recall. I believed the is a safety defect on Toyota part and may cause serious crash and lost of life. . Read more...

60 Traction Control System problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/07/2010

I have a 2002 Toyota Sequoia and recently my vsc has been was feels like a lock up, I hear something grinding and the car begins to shake and swerve, it happened as I was entering the interstate. I have had issues with the vsc light going on and off and did mention to the service dept. At the dealership when it was under warranty, they said they could not find anything wrong. It has been a few years since the problem has occurred and now it is worse and a very scary and dangerous situation. I had my daughter and a her friend in the car and we were nowhere near a town. I am very scared to drive my car. It now happens almost everytime I go somewhere, and the dealership wants to charge me just to evaluate the problem when I had previously mentioned it before. I hope there is a recall very soon.

61 Traction Control System problem of the 2005 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/02/2010

Started car and hear a loud whining noise but no lights came on. Within 2 days the whining noise was not heard when starting car but trac off, vsc light, and check engine light were all on. Took the truck to mechanic and he changed the battery and flushed the brake fluid. Lights were off for about 2 more starts of the truck and all lights were back on. Took it back to the mechanic the next day and he kept the truck for 2 days, called Toyota and they told him to replace the air injection driver. This was done 12 Nov 10 and by 13 Nov 10 all lights are back on again and the truck is having issues picking up speed.

62 Traction Control System problem of the 2005 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/01/2010

This has been going on since April 2010, its now November 2010 with no resolution. My 2005 Toyota Sequoia trac off, vsc trac, check engine lights and abs lights keep coming on. Brought into the dealer three times while the lights were on so the dealer could put it on the computer. No codes show up. I am told that it's not covered even though we have the Toyota certified bumper to bumper warranty. They recalled the 2003 for the same problem. They need to do the same for the 05. Repair cost for this is $2200. 00.

63 Traction Control System problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/27/2010

The contact owns a 2001 Toyota Sequoia. While driving approximately 30 mph, the vsc and trac warning lights illuminated and the steering wheel began to shake abnormally. The contact also heard a grinding noise in the engine. The vehicle was pulled over and parked momentarily. Once the contact began driving again, the steering wheel operated as normal and the grinding noise ceased. However, the service lights continued to illuminate. The failure recurred intermittently and the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was told that the yaw sensor would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 84,555.

64 Traction Control System problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/26/2010

Vsc / trac system engages randomly. . . Sometimes three times per week. Started about one month ago. Various speeds, various circumstances. . . Nothing consistent. It has pulled me off the road twice, but most of the time just engages with a rumble sound and hard to drive. The computer diagnostics finds nothing. I have used auto-blog and discovered dozens of people with the same problem.

65 Traction Control System problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/25/2010

2003 Toyota Sequoia - vsc trac, vsc off, and abs dash lights turned on and stay illuminated. Taken to dealer multiple times to diagnose. They have finally admitted the vsc computer chip is faulty. This causes the anti-skid brakes to malfunction. After doing further research, I have found that this is a common problem in many Toyota Sequoias. Toyota will not issue a recall, even though the problem is due to a faulty design.

66 Traction Control System problem of the 2004 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/16/2010

I have a 2004 Toyota Sequoia that had the right rear wheel bearings replaced last week at my Toyota dealership. Now the engine light is staying on as well as the vhs trac and trac off indicator lights. The car jerks when accelerating. This problem has been intermittent for two months but is now all the time.

67 Traction Control System problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/15/2010

My vehicle skid control (vsc) activates automatically when the vehicle is driving normal and there is no reason for the vsc to engage. This has happen on various occasions. I took the vehicle to the dealer and they told me that it was the yaw rate and steering angle sensor and it cost $1,236 to repair.

68 Traction Control System problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/09/2010

My 2001 Toyota Sequoia traction control system/vehicle stability control system (vsc) or anti lock braking system (abs) has failed. This problem started last summer 2009, and now this problem has become consistent and at every acceleration from a dead stop. The vehicle stalls momentarily and the vsc light/s come on the same time. The reason I mention both the vsc and the abs, is that these two systems are interworked for control, and at this time it could be either or both which are failed.

69 Traction Control System problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/08/2010

I've had problems with my 2003 Toyota Sequoia trac control, vsc, and abs lights going, about a dozen times since new, but they would go off after shutting the car off. Now that have come on and stay on. I took it to the dealer and they say its the yaw sensor and will cost around $650 with parts and labor. I think there have been a lot of complaints with this part failing and maybe something that needs looking into since its part of the vehicles safety equipment.

70 Traction Control System problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

2003 Toyota Sequoia vsc / abs skid control ecu failure. Went to Toyota dealer on Friday 10/01/2010 for a recall on my Toyota to update the vsc ecu. Dealer comes back and says my vsc ecu needs to be replaced for $900. 00 prior to updating the ecu. I declined the repairs and they had me sign a release stating Toyota is not responsible for any failed components due to my decision. I do not have any warning lights coming on indicating a problem with the vsc.
