38 Door Latch problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/04/2010

Defective sliding door and cable on 2004 Toyota Sienna: recently, a cable that allows the side door(s) of the vehicle to open and close automatically, snapped in half. This very well could have snapped in half while a person was standing near the vehicle, creating a serious injury. With the cable now broken in half, the door(s) now will not latch properly when either the vehicle remote or the side door control(s) in the vehicle are depressed. This now creates a very hazardous situation. The side door(s) are also prone to freezing shut in the winter. Until adequate thawing is completed, door(s) will remain frozen shut, allowing for limited access in and out of vehicle. Upon noticing these problems, I took to the internet to find a resolution and found that is more that just a rare occurrence, but a legitimate problem. . Read more...

Failure Date: 01/18/2010

The contact owns 2004 Toyota Sienna. She stated that while driving 10 mph when she made right turns, the open door light illuminated for the left rear sliding door. The week after the light illuminated she was unable to latch the door shut. She took the vehicle to the dealer and the dealer diagnosis located the failure as the bolts and found that two of them were pulled through the metal sheet and the third bolt was loose. The dealer stated that she needed to take the vehicle to a body shop. The manufacturer stated there were no related recalls and that there was nothing that they could do to assist her. Report 1001129940 was filed with the manufacturer. The vehicle will be repaired. The current and the failure mileages were 75,319. Updated 02/01/10 updated 02/02/10.

40 Door Latch problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/15/2010

The right automatic rear passenger door in my 2004 Toyota Sienna malfunctioned suddenly, rendering it totally inoperable. It would not close all the way. Then it would not open. The dealer got it closed and said it would be $2,000 to repair and that they could not assure me that it's current closed state is safe. The hazard is that the only door for passengers to exit now is the same side as the gas intake, so if there is ever a fire, all passengers will have to climb over and out the front doors. The defective door (it appears to be metal fatigue -- on a 5 year old car!) is impossible to open at all. I have read online of many, many instances such as this. In some cases, both rear passenger doors have failed with the passenger occupants trapped inside.

Occasionally and without warning, the automatic left passenger door will close as the person is getting in or out of the van. This has happened at least six times in the eight months we have had the van. It was taken to a Toyota dealer service center on two occasions (different locations), but because the technician can not duplicate the problem, nothing was done. The computer shows no problem, but it has continued to date.

50 Door Latch problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 04/02/2008

I started having trouble completely closing the driver's side sliding door on my 2004 Toyota Sienna. It has a broken latch mechanism (the door is manual, not power). The latch is held in place in the door with three bolts. Two of them have sheared out of the metal of the door.

51 Door Latch problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/25/2008

It would appear that the mount for the left rear door's lock on my 2004 Sienna 8le is broken. The door on the backside has mounts for the female receptable to the u-shaped bolt on the car body. The screws on that mount have torn through the sheet metal and now the door wont close all the way. I think the u-bolt from the body is not sitting completely into that receiver on the door as a result of a small misalignment. The Toyota dealer informed me that he's seen this before and suggested that I take the car to a body shop to hammer and weld the thing back into place. Otherwise, he'd have to replace the entire door.

52 Door Latch problem of the 2008 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/24/2008

We have an '08 8 passenger Toyota Sienna le. My son likes to play with the lights. . . We kept warning him if they got left on the battery would die. It finally happened. Had to go in through the front door using the key - stuck the key in the ignition and turned it and yup, sure enough - dead. Totally dead. There is no way to unlock the sliding doors. There is no way to open the sliding doors (from inside or out). There is no way to open the trunk (which can't be opened from the inside anyway - another concern) I had gone out to the van because I needed something from the trunk. I am 8 months pregnant with twins - there was no way I could climb back. My son had to. I couldn't even get into the middle row b/c there is a baby bucket in the center. If you were in a front end collision such that the battery was destroyed - the only way out of the van would be out the driver's or passenger's side doors. Maybe this is only true if the doors are locked at the time of the accident. . . But the van locks itself once in drive unless you have this feature turned off at the dealer. No one can get out the back or sides - no one could get in to help you. If the adults in the front were ok it might be very hard o get to anyone in the back if there is a car seat in the middle of the middle row - and then, getting back out would be hard. I totaled a car in college - it is possible for an accident to wipe out battery power. This has me pretty alarmed. It's not something you think of when you buy a car. No one thinks "will I be trapped if the battery goes?" but in this van, I think you would be, and it could be very dangerous. There should be an over ride where if battery power is lost everything automatically unlocks - and there should be a way to open the trunk from the inside! I am freaked out to think of getting in an accident and no one being able to get in to help out my kid(s). This is a huge safety concern!.

53 Door Latch problem of the 2002 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/06/2008

Both sliding passenger doors and rear hatch door will break and not open. We have had at least 8 incidents of doors not opening, and latches breaking not allowing access to vehicle. On one occasion, door was jammed in the open position and not able to close completely. Toyota advised door cable in door was too long and dealer took care of it and there should be no more problems. Problem recurred on 3/6/08.

54 Door Latch problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/01/2008

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that both the driver and passenger rear sliding door locks were defective. Previously, one of the doors came off track and caused the glass to shatter. The dealer repaired the door and glass. On July 1, 2008, the contact's children were trapped in the vehicle because he could not unlock the doors. The children had to be removed from the vehicle through the front driver and passenger side windows. The dealer reprogrammed the computer. The manufacturer was notified, but they did not take a report. The current and failure mileages were 60,000.

55 Door Latch problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/08/2008

I am having trouble with the side power sliding doors. Took it to the dealer twice and they said they could not duplicate the problem. Service bulletin was performed on a rattle. Dealer always tells me that they cannot duplicate the problem- but the problem is still there when I get home! the sliding back doors open but will not shut once pushing any button and I have to do it manually, meaning that I would have to hit the remote a couple of times to get it to open. Both sliding doors stuck closed. They would not work with the button are manually. At times I can't open it using either inside or outside door handle, nor has jiggling the door lock. There is a noise that the doors normally make. This does not happen every time I try to open and close the doors- only sometimes! so, yes it is hard to take it to the dealer and able to show him the broken part!! I fear that the doors are going to open and have the kids fall out or something! lift gate unexpectedly closed while standing at the back of the van. At one time the rear door light on the dash stayed on when the door was closed. I pushed the button on the b-pillar and the remote inside the vehicle and the door did not open. I manually closed the rear door and the light was still on. Eventually the light when off the automatic control worked. One time the driver side sliding door starts to open when I try to open it using either button on b-pillar or remote. It starts moving but only moves may be about 2-3mm - that's rights, about 1/12 of an inch. I can hear the motor working fine, and no sound is different from the sound the passenger side door makes when opening or closing (passenger side sliding door works fine). Now, when I try to open driver side door using the door handle, nothing happens no motor activation, no nothing. The door has even closed on it own when my wife was getting out of it and I can operate the vehicle with the side door open.

56 Door Latch problem of the 2002 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 11/17/2007

The left sliding door stopped halfway when closing and moved back to fully open position. Repeated tries did not work and so had to manually close the door. After that the pwr door icon on the display lit up showing a problem with the power door. Taking to the mechanic revealed that the motor is defective. The vehicle has only 31,500 miles.

57 Door Latch problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/03/2007

No significant events occurred up to the failure beyond normal expected use. Defective welds on the driver side door strap result in failure of the door strap mechanism. Toyota has not resolved the problem.

58 Door Latch problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 09/15/2007

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Sienna. The passenger side door opened while the vehicle was in motion and accelerating. The speed was 4 mph. The dealer stated that the control panel and latch assembly needed to be replaced. The current mileage was 54,347 and the failure mileage was 54,000.

59 Door Latch problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 08/01/2007

Our van has power sliding doors. In the summer of 2006, the driver side door was opening when the cable snapped. The van was taken to the local dealer who was able to get Toyota to supply the part ($1,000) and charged approx. $300 for labor to install new motor & cable assembly even though the van was out of warranty (approx. 65,000 miles). In the summer of 2007, the passenger door was opening when the cable also snapped. The same dealer told us to contact Toyota directly, which I did. They had us go back to the dealer who informed us that it was out of warranty and would not be covered. Contacted Toyota again but was told the same information that it was not covered and out of warranty. (approx. 90,000 miles).

60 Door Latch problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/15/2007

62 Door Latch problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 06/20/2007

Left front door, weld broker, check strap mount base. I would like this safety defect repaired to avoid a complete failure which would permit the unchecked door to swing into an adjacent car or into oncoming traffic, (if parked on a street). Reported this safety defect to Toyota on 6/20/07 @ 44,082 miles, assigned file number 200707020143. Toyota has declined to repair this safety defect. Nhtsa service bulletin num 00307, item number 10021711, and two reports on your site, odi 10184002 & odi 10191764, outline similar defects.

63 Door Latch problem of the 2001 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 06/01/2007

Sliding door latches get stuck sometimes in the open and sometimes in the closed position. When doors are closed we are unable to push the button inside or use the outside handle to release the latch and open the door. If the door is open when this happens we are then unable to close the door as it will not latch. When the door remains open this is an obvious safety issue and the van is undriveable as doing so would put the passengers at risk. When the door is stuck in a close position it makes exiting the vehicle difficult which would be a safety issue if there were an emergency and a quick exit were necessary. It also makes it extremely difficult to fasten or release a child from a safety seat located in the back 2 rows of seats. The back hatch latch has also broken. A light squeeze of the handle while trying to open the hatch caused something to snap (a small plastic piece fell out) and since this is the one and only handle/latch to open the hatch I am no longer able to use the hatch nor open it to see what part needs to be replaced. The two side doors work occasionally but the back hatch is now completely unusable. Simply put I have had 3 out of my five doors fail within a month which I find absurd. Please note the vehicle is in good shape otherwise and has never been in an accident. 2001 Toyota Sienna le/xle.

64 Door Latch problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/08/2007

A month or so prior to this incident, I took the 2004 Toyota Sienna to the local Toyota dealer and asked them to check the door latch on the driver's door - it was making a popping sound. I was told it would not hurting anything ,and some time in the future bring it in and they will order the part and take the door panel off to replace the latch. Well, on Tuesday, may 8, 2007 I opened the door and the latch broke in half, and the part connected to the door broken the metal around the latch, and it fell into the door. When I lowered the window several hours later the window fell of the track and down inside the door. - it would not raise back up, so I took it back to the Toyota dealer, and after waiting for 3 hours ,I was told the clips were broken, and they would have to order a new window with clips attached. The window was put back in place, and I was told not to roll the window down or it would fall off the track again. - the service department at the Toyota dealer was going to charge me $106 for putting the window back up. I was told this labor charge and the charge to replace the window/clips, or the door latch , actually the door would have to be replaced, would not be covered under my extended warranty. - I was not informed that it was not covered under my extended warranty until they were charging me for the labor of putting my window back on the clips. So, they did not charge me anything - after I argued with them about this. - the next day, I had someone else look at the clips, window and the track holding the window. - the clips are not broken, just unglued from the window - because the track bent when the broken door latch part fell into the door.

65 Door Latch problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

66 Door Latch problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 04/12/2007

2004 Toyota Sienna passenger side power sliding door stopped working. It wouldn't close the final 18 inches. I had to bungy strap it and drive to the dealership. They said the brackets were bent and motor was no good. It would cost $1400 to fix it. I told them to cut the cable or just figure a way to close it. When I returned to the dealership they were able to shut the door. I asked if I could use the door manually. She said since I didn't authorize them to fix it ($1400) they would not say it was ok to use. I would be using it at my own risk. This still cost me $130.

69 Door Latch problem of the 1998 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/13/2007

On numerous occasions since purchasing this vehicle (and most recently, today), the sliding door handle/latch/lock has failed. Usually, the failure is such that the door cannot be opened from the inside or outside. Sometimes, the door can only be opened from the inside and sometimes the door can only be opened from the outside. On at least one occasion, an inoperable door spontaneously opened itself when nobody was near it. The dealership has looked at this problem numerous times, to no avail, and significant pieces of the mechanism have been replaced at the cost of several hundred dollars, but the problem persists. A different, but possibly related, problem is that the front passenger door lock (the electronic lock) has also failed repeatedly over the life of the car.

70 Door Latch problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 12/05/2006

The two sliding doors on my 2004 Toyota Sienna keep freezing shut in cold weather. Dealer cleaned and lubricated the doors but that didn't help. Dealers next suggestion is to replace the cables in the door for $700/door but can't guarantee that will fix the problem. My two children have to enter the van through the back hatch. If an accident occurred, the kids would have to crawl over the front seats to exit the van since the side doors are frozen shut and the back hatch doesn't open from inside the van.
