The cable which drives the sliding door is completely exposed to elements. (you'll find it within the groove located under the rear side windows) this cable is made of some kind of metal (steel? who knows. ) then coated with a black plastic/acrylic/rubber casing (such as an electrical wire). With time, the casing begins to dry and be brittle, causing it to crack and fall off the wire, leaving the wires completely vulnerable to getting wet, rust, freeze, etc, also rubbing extensively unprotected against the gears. Within a few months or even weeks, the metal cable wires snap thus getting caught in the mechanism. One thing leads to another and the whole cable snaps, making the door jam altogether.

On the driver side sliding door, two out of three bolts that hold the locking latch have fallen through the sheet metal. The result is that the door open indicator light goes on and off while we are driving and the door is technically open while we are driving, albeit locked. As per some quick internet research, this is not an uncommon problem but one that Toyota will not fix. It is not the result of any user misuse and I therefore and disappointed by Toyota's stance.

2005 Toyota Sienna, driver's side automatic sliding door engaged in open position cannot be retracted to closed position.
Passenger sliding door inoperable; faulty lock actuator & motor assembly unit.
Rear passenger automatic door will not open. In 2009, while the vehicle was under warranty, a similar problem occurred and the dealership replaced part # 69631-08020 (control, slide dr). When I discovered the new problem, my 3-year old son was in his car-seat on the passenger side, so I had to enter through the driver side rear door. I'm glad this was not an emergency situation, for had it been, my son's life could have been endangered. Edmunds. Com lists numerous instances of similar problems. Clearly Toyota needs to issue a recall on this crucial safety issue.

I was driving my 2009 Toyota Sienna with 2 children in the back and when I went over rail road tracks the sliding door on the passenger side opened. This is a great concern for me especially with the kids in the back. Toyota want $1500 to fix this problem on a 2009 with 47,000 miles on it. There should be something that will make them fix this problem. I know it would be a major recall but the safety that goes along with this is an extreme concern!!!!! this van cost me over $35,000 and the only reason I bought it was because of the safety of the van. Well that was a mistake and the service department at Toyota is looking to make money off me. I am a single mom who can hardly keep up with everything else but this is just wrong, and I think our government should force them to do something about this before kids start falling out of the vans onto the streets and getting fun over!!! please help me!.

My 2 year old daughter got her leg caught in the back part of the sliding door of a 2011 Toyota Sienna. She was inside the car. The door was opened. Her leg fell into the space while the door was opening. The door opened as far as it could and constricted her leg. Her leg was so tightly constricted we could not repostion her body to open the door. Averill park fire dept and sand lake ambulance arrived on the scene. She was trapped(screaming) for 20 -25 minutes. Her leg was cold and turning blue before it was removed. We went to the hospital concerned for internal bleeding, broken leg, and other complications. She is doing fine but I'm very concerned about the design of the door. I've looked at other minivans (even the same make and model but different year) and they don't have the gap in the back part of the door like the 2011 Toyota Sienna. Updated ivoq 07/27/11.

The 2006 Toyota Sienna passenger power sliding door does not have a manual override. When the power siding door mechanism fails the passenger(s) is (are) trapped in the vehicle or are forced to exit into traffic or climb to the front to exit the vehicle. Although this incident did not result in an accident or injure, it does create a safety issue, especially if children are in the vehicle.

{much of this content is copied from another complaint, but we are experiencing the same problems} sliding door latches get stuck sometimes in the open and sometimes in the closed position. When doors are closed we are unable to push the button inside or use the outside handle to release the latch and open the door. If the door is open when this happens we are then unable to close the door as it will not latch. When the door remains open this is an obvious safety issue and the van is undriveable as doing so would put the passengers at risk. When the door is stuck in a close position it makes exiting the vehicle difficult which would be a safety issue if there were an emergency and a quick exit were necessary. The back hatch latch has also broken. We have removed the cover from the back hatch and with a great deal of manipulation we can usually make this door work. The power sliding door is now stuck open and will not close. The outside handle has completely broken off. The handle on the manual sliding door is going to break off soon. Please note the vehicle is in good shape otherwise and has never been in an accident. 2001 Toyota Sienna le/xle.

My 2007 Toyota Sienna xle with only 14,000 miles having issues with the rear trunk. First time was with the trunk not responsing to the remote and the dealership had to replace the sensor. Second was when I opened the trunk it would close suddenly because the rear hatch strut is defective and dealership would not replace it because it just pass the 3 year warranty.
Siena 2006 model back door is shutting/closing down. I was caught in between and it shuts down quick and hard.
My complaint began at 110,000 miles. I began calling Toyota in 2008 when my passenger side automatic door caught my daughters arm and the safety feature did not reopen the door. About two months later, I dropped my daughter off to school the principal was coming toward the door and the cable snapped! I have called every Toyota company I can only to be told it would cost $3,000 and "its normal wear and tear" really? the cable was rusted because the cable is on the outside of the vehicle. The door would not shut at all, and could not be put into manual because of the cable. I have taken to anothermechanic as Toyota has no regard for human life, when someone dies, they will fix it. I have 6 complaints on file and noone will help me unless I pay $3,000 to fix a cable that was defective. The car was barely 4 years old. I got it shut, and with no job and budget restraints, it is not fixed yet. Today-5/10/11 the passenger manual door locking mechanism broke and now this door will not open. I have called 15 people from Toyota, and all they can tell me is sorry. It is normal wear and tear of the vehicle. My children are trapped in the vehicle, have to climb over the seats- this is a defect. I have googled the problem and thousands have this issue. I contacted another man from Toyota and he directed me to your site. I was told" noone had died from it, so its not a safety issue. " I will never purchas a Toyota again! someone needs to do something about this before someone is killed because the doors won't stay locked, or shut and if the lock breaks, the kids are trapped inside the car. I am not going to stop, I will call my state reps, congressmen, news attorney general until someone realizes this is a huge issue. Investigate this issue and you will see how many this is happenning too. Please before a life is lost.
Manual sliding door (drivers side) doesn't latch completely and comes open when turning right.
Passenger sliding door failure. Cable compromised due to design flaw that stripped it of its insulation. Despite being garaged, this caused the cable to fray and then rust, making the door inoperable. This includes manually, as the cable catches on a roller at the door hinge in the sliding track. Additional fear is that consequent motor strain may cause additional failure/expense/fire. The cable failure causes it to bind on the hinge roller and prevents the door from both opening * closing. In an accident, you will not be able to exit the vehicle from that side if necessary. Door did open partially and then would not close without great exertion. Thankfully, my wife was able to force it closed before having to take the highway with our children inside and an open door. Once the part fails, the door can not be made operable without major repair. Toyota has TSB el004-004 on this issue that covers our particular VIN, but will not cover the repair out of warranty. Cost of repair is approximately $2,000 and the fear is that many, like us, will not have the part repaired due to this cost (and anger over *acknowledged* design flaw).
I have a 2004 Toyota Sienna. Both sliding doors now have broken cables and will not open from the inside. They only open when forced open from the outside. The repair cost from a Toyota dealer is $1,600. 00 per door. The part itself cost $1,100. 00 plus the labor. The doors now are a safety issue since my son can not get out of the back quickly if needed. The cables rusted and severed while opening. The doors do not have a manual override to allow opening properly once the electronic operation is compromised.
The lh slide door does not open or close properly. The lock/unlock mechanism that holds the door open and closed does not work automatcally. It does work when manually opening the door from the outside of door. The automatic slide does work if the locking latch is disengaged first.
The rear passenger sliding door will not open either manually or automatically. I took it to the dealership and was told that the automatic latch mechanism was broken and when that failed and you try to open the door manually with the handle it breaks the door latch as well so now door won't open either manually or automatically. This seems like a quite a design/engineering flaw. If the automatic opening mechanism fails and the only other way to open the door then causes the manual latch to break leaves you without the use of the door at all.
The passenger side sliding door on my 2006 Toyota Sienna will not open, either manually or any other way.
Toyota Siennas 04-06 are prone to door popping when opening and closing due to broken door welds. This is the situation of a company that is having tremendous growth and will not take care of the customers who helped propel that growth. Even though it is out of warranty, they have failed to recall the issue and replace the defects.
The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that when depressing the button to activate the sliding door, there was an abnormal noise but the door would not open. The door could only be opened manually. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was told that the door lock actuator needed to be replaced. The failure mileage was 102,085 and the current mileage was 122,055. Updated 07/06/12.
2004 Toyota Sienna xle driver's side power door cable (part of the motor and clutch assembly) frayed and snapped. Toyota recommends full replacement of motor and assembly part at $1200 plus labor $660. (wire material cost estimated at $20 or less. ) issue: design defect leading to material stress/breakage.
Rear taligate latch broke. Beacause there's no remote way to open the latch (either wireless or wired), it's necessary to climb inside the vehicle remove and disassemble the interior rear-hatach door paneling and manually engage the release cable. This is the third time this has happended with this vehicle.
2011 Toyota Sienna le power sliding doors have jammed multiple times. Has happened 4-5 times now with only 285 miles on it. This is potentially a very serious malfunction that could cost a life. All passengers should be able to evacuate if needed. Called Toyota but they say they have not gotten any complaints? will take it in and see what they say.
2005 Toyota Sienna rear two automatic sliding doors failed within 4 days of each other. Children cannot get in and out of vehicle by themselves now. Toyota wants $1800+ per door to fix! doors can be made to open manually but children cannot shut them by themselves.
I have a 2009 Toyota Sienna Mini-van with automatic sliding doors. These doors are an accident waiting to happen. Unlike an elevator door that will immediately reverse if somone or something is in its path. The Sienna's doors continue to close unless forcibly pushed back to retract with a serious amount of strength. My arm has been bruised and I could only imagine a child's hand being caught. It's inconceivable to me how these doors do not operate on the same premise as an elevator. Very dangerous!.
My 10 year old grandson could not exit my 2005 Toyota Sienna van. He jumped the seat and came out the rt front door. The rt slider door stuck open 6 inches from the frame. A metal cable rusted through and broke. The door would not close power or manual. I forced the door closed from the outside and have not opened it since. It can not open more than 6 inches. A recall to check the spare tire release was done recently. The door cables are also subjected to salt spray in ri. Toyota service verified the complaint. In an emergency,. The door could not be opened.
Automatic sliding doors failure. Won't unlock from inside. Already repaired once, now happened again and Toyota won't fix it for inder 1000$ on the same door.
We have a 2003 Toyota Sienna minivan. The drivers side automatic door now will not open manually or automatically. I have a daughter who is handicapped and this is the easiest door to put her in the car, so as of right now the car that holds her wheelchair is completely useless to us. Toyota has been absolutely no help. This is very dangerous. What is she was in the car an accident occured and we could not get her out????.

Door very hard to open and close. Plastic sheeting comes off the cable making it non functional. Bad design if you ask me. $1800 to replace the motor which is outrageous. $1100 for the motor, which again should not cost as much. Highway robbery. I can understand if it couple hundred for the motor. This needs to go on a recall. Too many Sienna owners have similar problem. Just google and you will find all the forums. My first and last Toyota. . . . . . .
My new 2011 Toyota Sienna le automatic power sliding door on the driver side stopped working. It won't open or close using remote control as well as top console/pillar switches. If I try to open using remote control or switches then it will try to open but close immediately and make beeping sounds. I took the vehicle to the local Toyota dealer couple of times but they simply said there is no problem. Finally, when I called Toyota directly then the same dealer diagnosed it further and found a fault code c224 in the system. Toyota refused to fix the issue promptly until we filed for arbitration to replace the car or refund vehicle purchase price. Toyota finally replaced power sliding door motors for both left and right side to address the issue.
Toyota Sienna 2005 sliding door stopet working. Sliding door on passanger side makes grumbling noise but it dosn't move.
2004 Toyota Sienna van drivers side sliding door rear latch has become detatched and the door won't close. Not only is this a safety hazard while driving but the locks will not engage with an open door.
Passenger side automatic door not opening with any of the buttons on the inside of vehicle. But it will open from the outside, by pulling on the handle. Potential safety hazard of not being able to exit vehicle in during an emergency. Difficult for young children to open door manually. We took it to wilson Toyota. The diagnosed a $50. 00 part. $90. 00/ hr rate. The part was ordered, then scheduled for repair. The actually charge was 696. 08 . They decided to change everything, to cover their liability no doubt. Numerous failures of doors in you tube and edmunds . Com forums. I suggest Toyota take responsibility and do a re-call and fix this potential safety issue. 56206 miles 2007 Toyota Sienna le.
Initially in cold weather only, the tail gate / hatch / rear door would start to close slowly of its own accord. The electrical system would then assume you had attempted to close the door by hand and the electric motor would kick in and close the door on top of you if you did not realize and move. The force of the closing door is quite high to a degree that it was a struggle to stop it crushing a person. A child would not be able to stop it closing. The problem has continued to get worse and the weather has little effect anymore, the door will not stay open even on mild days.
