37 Power Train problem of the 2024 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/17/2025

Van purchased new October 2024. On two separate occasions, one in late 2024 and next today, [xxx], when pulling into street from a stop, there is no throttle response. You push the accelerator at varying pressure and no response for 2-3 seconds. This is a severe safety issue as it could cause an accident with oncoming traffic. No error lights illuminated on dash. Have seen other complaints on NHTSA website and social media as well. Will take to dealer but reporting a major safety issue. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

39 Power Train problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 12/31/2024

Was driving on highway at 60-65 mph. The car continued to accelerate. Pressed on brake and wasn't slowing the vehicle. The driver was weaving in and out of cars as the van started to creek up to 92 mph. The driver and passengers thought they were going to crash and possible die. The driver tried the brake multiple times and nothing. The driver said the accelerator pedal wasn't pressed all the way down to the floor. It was half way and driver had to go down and pull up on the pedal while driving. The van then started to slow and driver was able to pull over to have the van evaluated . The throttle body was reached and cleaned of carbon because it said that this may have been part of the issue. Never has this van taken off like this. The throttle body cable wasnt loose or disconnected either. So far we havent been able to recreate but 3 people could have been killed.

40 Power Train problem of the 2017 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 11/29/2024

After hearing wining noise from transmission as driving down highway at full speed with out warning car suddenly and quit violently came to a stop . No waring lights ! transmission appears to be in two gears at once reverse and forward will only roll if put in neutral . Internal failure in the transmission according to the dealer . The car not included in the recall issued for the same year make and model for the same thing. Extremely dangerous wife and kids in the car when it happened.

41 Power Train problem of the 2017 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/09/2024

While trying to accelerate on an onramp to the highway, the transmission failed to enter into higher gear, and the check engine light came on. The 2017 Sienna currently sits at 112,951 miles. Leading up to this, we had noticed the van jolting when being put into drive or reverse, and acceleration was often sluggish, with a whirring sound. Inspection by the local Toyota dealership found that the entire transmission needed to be replaced. The serial number of the transmission starts with ua02, which wasn't part of any of the existing 2017 Sienna service bulletins.

42 Power Train problem of the 2021 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 09/24/2024

Turned on my minivan to begin backing out of the driveway when it began violently shaking and exploded. Was not due for an oil change, was not low on oil, passed an engine inspection 5 days prior. 2 holes through engine block caused by either connecting rod or piston.

43 Power Train problem of the 2021 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 09/16/2024

-multiple instances recently of feeling like the car was accelerating or lurching forward lightly while I was braking - thought I was going crazy. Today however, the car very clearly lurched forward while I was braking coming into an intersection with my kids in the car. Checked my foot on the pedal, mats, etc. Will be taken to dealer on earliest appointment they have in 7 days. -if there was a car coming through that intersection, my family and I could have been t-boned due to the unexpected acceleration. -there are no warning lamps or messages active in the vehicle. -symptoms likely started a few months ago, but the most severe instance was today, 9/16/2024. I finished driving my kids to soccer and while there I googled this and called my dealer. Apparently this is a known issue? -how can Toyota not notify owners of this serious issue? there needs to be a recall immediately. This is my family vehicle that we bought new just a few years ago, this is dangerous and absolutely unacceptable.

44 Power Train problem of the 2017 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/30/2024

The contact owns a 2017 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact became aware of a hard shift and a high-pitched whining sound while the transmission was shifting. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with transmission failure. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. In addition, the contact was informed that the repair was not covered under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

45 Power Train problem of the 2018 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/30/2024

This is a reoccurring issue on numerous occasions but the transmission programming is a danger to drivers when it is in economy mode (the default setting when car starts up). The transmission constantly starts at a higher gear (3rd or 4th) and reduces throttle input from a stop. It makes for a slower takeoff when making a right turn on the stop sign because the engine would be lugging. Similarly when trying to overtake or merge lanes and you try to speed up the vehicle, the car does not want to downshift. The above mentioned problems are not there when eco-mode is disabled or the car is put into sport mode.

46 Power Train problem of the 2018 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 04/05/2024

There has been a "whining" noise or "hum" upon acceleration noticed for several months to a year, could be longer, but getting worse over time. There is also a delay when pressing on gas for the vehicle to actually accelerate. I have had many instances where I am almost hit from behind because of this delay. Obviously the person's behind me have been following me entirely too closely, but nonetheless, scary. This is our primary vehicle for our family, which carries 4 precious boys. I am aware of the csp already in place for this issue but have been told that my specific vehicle does not qualify for the customer protection program. That seems very odd given the amount of vehicle's listed as "affected"(83,700) Sienna's and 66,500 highlanders. You cannot tell me that there are not more out there like mine that are having the same problems but being told "not covered". I do not think anyone should have to drive a vehicle with children in it that you are unsure when your transmission is just going to go out or fear getting hit from behind because of the delay in acceleration. Please please do something about this in order to hold Toyota accountable!.

47 Power Train problem of the 2017 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/24/2024

On Sunday, March 24th, 2024 (at 78,793 miles), our my17 Sienna xle awd suddenly displayed a malfunction indicator lamp (mil) and a message advising "check awd system". The vehicle disabled its cruise control system and awd system, and no longer displays the eco indicator when traveling at constant speeds on flat terrain. There was no obvious change to vehicle shifting behavior; the shifting has always been sluggish and occasionally "hangs" at higher rpm before downshifting. There were no symptoms or mils prior to this incident. We consider awd to be a safety feature when driving with snow or rain, and we frequently traverse box elder canyon where the summit is nearly 6k feet above sea level. We stopped by an auto parts store (o'reilly) where they pulled codes from the obd-ii sensor. Their reader showed 3 codes: p2714, p0741, and p2757). The vehicle is currently at young Toyota in logan, ut. Young Toyota advised that while the vehicle codes are consistent with bulletin t-sb-0160-18, that it is not included by Toyota under their list of affected transmissions. The service agent said a solenoid that governs locking the torque converter was "stuck". Since it is outside the 60k miles/60 month powertrain warranty, Toyota is unwilling to provide goodwill towards a fix. The dealer recommended a "software fix", which may or may not solve the issue, and that a transmission replacement would follow. I am simply in shock that a vehicle we purchased new, have carefully maintained (including through Toyota's maintenance plan for 60k miles), could potentially have a failing transmission below 150k miles. This is the ua80f 8-speed automatic transmission, which I believe was first-equipped on the my17 Sienna, replacing a reliable 6-speed a/t.

48 Power Train problem of the 2021 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/01/2024

About 25% of the time when I come to a stop and I am breaking, the car surges forward slightly. At first, I thought it was the way I was driving or the fact that it is an ev vehicle, which I had not driven before, but overtime it seems it is just the way the car operates. Others in the car have felt it happen as well as I have come to a stop sign or stoplight. I have not bumped into another car or anything but feel that that could happen if this is not corrected.

49 Power Train problem of the 2017 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/08/2024

50 Power Train problem of the 2016 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 12/12/2023

After 80,000 miles have a loud whirling sound coming from rear, after inspection and online investigation found many many others with same issue, the dust cover and or o-ring doesn’t properly protect the rear bearing in the coupler. So while the fix is to remove the rear differential coupler, and replace the bearing with an improved version, seems Toyota has stopped supporting this, and no longer offers the improved bearing as a replacement part, but only supports replacing the entire rear differential coupling at $2000 for the part plus labor. While many have replaced the bearing without issues despite Toyota not allowing it as a fix. So first it should be a recall as this is an obvious defect effecting thousands, but then to gouge owners for thousands when the fix doesn’t require a complete replacement of the rear differential coupling assembly.

51 Power Train problem of the 2017 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/21/2023

I was driving and suddenly the 2017 Toyota siena just lost all acceleration. The car no longer could move in gear. I put car into reverse or drive or any other gear and the vehicle would not move. The engine was on. The parking brake was not on. The transmission seems to have had a major malfunction. I had to have my car towed and my enitre family was stranded. I then looked up tranmission issues and found that 2017 Toyotas have a serious tranmission issue under “ certain 2017 to 2018 model year Toyota Sienna certain 2017 to 2018 model year Toyota highlander coverage for ua80 transmission customer support program zjc”. I have approx 35000 miles on this vehicle and I bought it close to used from a kingston prestige Toyota dealership in new york state.

52 Power Train problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 09/13/2023

The bushing for the gear shift is broken causing the lever to disconnect from the cord preventing the vehicle from shifting gears. This caused the vehicle to become stuck in reverse. The car was stuck in reverse when attempting to shift to drive, nearly causing my wife to crash into another vehicle. There are multiple videos on youtube demonstrating this problem, it is a known issue. The vehicle/component has not been manufactured. No warning lamps, messages or other symptoms.

54 Power Train problem of the 2017 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 08/22/2023

Parked the car on an incline (our driveway) like we have a 100 times before. Went inside to unload groceries. Came back to the car and from the passenger seat reached over to press the auto-off button. When that was pressed the car started to roll down our driveway with our daughter in the back seat. It rolled across the street, hit the side of our neighbors house, and landed in the woods. My wife sustained major injuries to her arms, legs, hands, and back. She was also 9 months pregnant. Toyota dealership says there's nothing wrong after a 30 minute inspection.

55 Power Train problem of the 2020 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 06/23/2023

My car was not shifting gears, and it would go into brief periods of erratic acceleration. I took it to the dealer service dept. The transmission went bad. It had metal pieces broken off inside it. The car is 3 years old and only has approximately 70,900 miles on it. It was dangerous to drive. It put me, my kids, and other drivers at risk due to the erratic shifting it would do while driving. The issues started slowly on 6/23/23. The check engine light was on by 6/24/23.

56 Power Train problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 06/01/2023

Bought the van used last year. Previous owner said mechanic could not diagnose the issue. On slight curves similar to on-ramps while accelerating the vehicle stability control (vsc) will engage unexpectedly, sound an alarm and jerk the steering wheel. Some times to the point of pulling the vehicle out of its lane. Road speed is decreased dramatically as it feels as though the abs is engaging. This has happened to me at least half a dozen times since June 2023. The condition will continue for maybe five or ten seconds until the wheel is straightened and speed reduced. Searching the internet seems it's a fairly common problem. The fix might be to replace the steering rack or disable the vsc system. It's reported by those experiencing the issue get little to no help from the dealerships which strikes me as quite strange. . . From what I've read it seems to affect 2004-2009 Siennas.

57 Power Train problem of the 2023 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/20/2023

We had a "hybrid system malfunction" warning on the dashboard and the van slowed down to 20 mph on a climb. With the flow of traffic at 50mph on a two lane road and no shoulder to pull off, this cause a serious risk to us and other drivers. Stopping and starting the car several times did not cause the warning to go away and the owner's manual says to stop driving. There were no warning lights prior to this happening. The warning and the mil came on at the same time as the van started slowing. The local dealer now has the van and are not able to exactly diagnose the problem. They are contacting the manufacturer. They said the warning is no longer on.

58 Power Train problem of the 2018 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/17/2023

The contact owns a 2018 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate. Several unknown warning lights illuminated, and the "pull over - take to dealer" message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the VIN was not included in customer support program: zjc (coverage for ua80 transmission). The failure mileage was approximately 132,000.

59 Power Train problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/12/2023

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated when he walked outside, he noticed that the vehicle had rolled backwards into the middle of the street. The contact was able to drive the vehicle back into the driveway; however, the failure reoccurred. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was contacted, and the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 17v657000 (power train) and a case was filed. The failure mileage was 140,000.

Failure Date: 02/26/2023

The 2gr-fe engine on my Sienna has experienced a front timing cover leak. It's slowly leaking oil out of my vehicle and I'm afraid it will get worst over time. My vehicle has less than 100k miles and if the leak persists, I down want my vehicle breaking down and leaving me stranded.

62 Power Train problem of the 2022 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/01/2023

When decelerating, particularly on hills or into corners, there is an intermittent surge that occurs after the brake pedal has been depressed. It feels as though there is a release of the braking action, this is unsettling as if you are starting to approach a vehicle or pedestrian, this sudden "delay" of braking could result in contact with other objects. We have changed our driving behavior as a result of this. We reported this behavior at 5000 miles and there was not a solution until last year. We were not notified of this, and our vehicle is now out of warranty. Toyota has released as of last year a TSB related to programming and we are going to pay out of pocket $300 this week to get that TSB applied. This doesn't seem fair to consumers. . Read more...

63 Power Train problem of the 2022 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/05/2023

The entune 3. 0 system governs navigation, calls etc. The system on my car has been replaced 4 times and still does not work. This is a life safety issue as the system grabs phone calls while driving without being able to answer. It also makes it frequently impossible to use hands free on the phone as it grabs calls. In order to avoid it grabbing calls I have to disable bluetooth on my phone which then causes my phone to not work in handsfree mode (ok google etc. ) furthermore the backup camera does not always work. Finally, a Toyota service manager told me in his oppinion 25% of the entune units are "bricked," non functional and need to be replaced. Toyota has fired according to him panasonic as the supplier and now has a new provider.

64 Power Train problem of the 2019 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 12/14/2022

I was traveling on the capital beltway (495) during morning rush-hour in my 2019 Toyota Sienna minivan. Normal road conditions: stop & go traffic in the right-most lane around 9:30am on December 14, 2022. All of a sudden and without warning, when attempting to accelerate and keep up with traffic after the vehicle was stopped, I found that I was unable to move forward. (there was no indication that my vehicle was suffering from mechanical failure prior to this incident and no visible alert or alarm was triggered) at that point, I powered down the vehicle after turning on the hazard indicator lights. After re-engaging the ignition, I then tried to move forward, and found the vehicle to be unresponsive. A tractor trailer was directly in back of me and was inching closer as to keep up with the rush-hour traffic. I was immovable at that moment and waived the truck around. After finding a break in traffic, I attempted to move out of the right-most lane, but with the transmission not responding to the drive function, found that my only course of action was to to engage reverse and move to the right shoulder of the highway. I then notified triple a and my vehicle was towed to a local garage for evaluation. Upon initial evaluation is was determined that it was either related to where the shift cable goes in to the transmission, or complete transmission failure. It is highly unusual for a Toyota transmission to fail at 71. 000 miles (odometer reading at the time of the incident). I currently have two other Toyota vehicles with odometer reading in excess of 140,000 miles. I am concerned for the safety of my family and myself, as this is the primary vehicle used for transport. A 3 year old car with less than 100,000 miles should not suffer from transmission failure. This is a major safety concern. What if this happened and I was not in stop and go traffic or already in the slow lane, on a major highway?.

65 Power Train problem of the 2010 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 11/01/2022

Massive oil leak and loss of oil pressure: oil line burst while driving on the hwy coming back home from a work. Loss nearly all of the oil, but there were no warning lights. Pulled over into gas station. Checked dip stick, completely dry! catastrophic oil leak without warning. Could have been stalled on the hwy and caused major accident. Tried to refill oil but it all leaked out as soon as I started engine. Research around the web and find out that this is a known issue to Toyota for using rubber vvti oil line - part # 15772-31030 now this part is made all metal!.

66 Power Train problem of the 2008 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/26/2022

The transmission shift cable broke during parking. Although the transmission shift lever was moved to the park position, the transmission was not placed in park. The first observation was the vehicle started to roll when the driver was loading the purchases at a store. The parking brake was then applied. Then the vehicle engine could not be started, regardless of where the shift lever was positioned. The vehicle was towed to an independent auto service provider. The provider identified the problem as the transmission still in the reverse position and replaced a $10 bushing on the transmission cable with a labor charge of $510.

67 Power Train problem of the 2007 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/26/2022

As a result of the transmission cooler being a part of the radiator system, the transmission cooler ruptured while driving causing immediate loss of power and the engine to overheat. This malfunction also caused coolant and transmission oil to contaminate the engine compartment as well as the transmission. This is a major iengineering flaw and safety issue as I was on the interstate when it happened and was stranded on the side of the highway until help could be obtained.

68 Power Train problem of the 2020 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 09/25/2022

For a month prior, there were intermittent incidents of the van shuddering and the rpm needle jumping upon ignition. Sometimes the van would have a hard time accelerating before jerking and driving normally. No issues before this started in late July and no indication when/where would occur. •September drove the van all day running errands. It drove normally. Filled up the gas tank (gulf gas station), then continued errands. About a half hour later, while at a stop sign, a notification appeared that the “traction control system has been turned off” and the check engine light came on. Tried to move through the stop sign, but the van would barely go. Applied the gas, but no results. Able to turn onto a side street and had to have it towed to Toyota of irving. The service advisor stated the issue was due due to bad gas and indicated the van needed to be flushed and the fuel injection system cleaned. Paid $725 for these repairs. •September started van in driveway. Shuddering and rpm needle jumping again. Drove normally. •September same as above. •September drove the van all day with no issues. Filled up with valero plus gas. As we pulled out of the gas station and sitting at the light, the traction control message and check engine light again appeared. The van would barely go to get us through the traffic light and into a nearby parking lot. Once we parked, the screen displayed the following message:"a malfunction in the electronic control of the engine, throttle, or automatic transmission has been detected. " had the vehicle towed to Toyota of irving. The service advisor called 2 days later to say they cannot detect any issues.

69 Power Train problem of the 2017 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 09/03/2022

The contact owns a 2017 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated while driving 60 mph with her four children in the rear seats, the vehicle started jerking and decelerated independently. Additionally, the transmission was slipping. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact continued driving; however, the transmission continuously slipped out of gear. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the failure was associated with Toyota ua80 transmission program. The dealer contacted the manufacturer who agreed to cover the repair of the vehicle. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.

70 Power Train problem of the 2013 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/07/2022

Anyone: in 2013 I bought a new Toyota Sienna from fiore Toyota in hollidaysburg, PA. It was advertised with a lifetime engine and powertrain warranty. I thought that I had made a wise purchased. Fast forward to 2022. In early June I noticed a loud humming from the rear differential area and since I had a family vacation planned with my son’s family I decided to take it in for diagnosis to my local dealer, colonial Toyota of indiana, PA. They said that it was the electromagnetic control unit but could not get me in for over a week and that it was not advisable to drive long distance. This resulted in my rented a replacement vehicle – an unanticipated expense. When I returned I took the vehicle into colonial on July 7th and asked if the part would be covered under the lifetime warranty. They said they would check it out. There were several slow responses between the garage and the warranty company. Requests for additional service records, VIN numbers and what not. Meanwhile I am without a vehicle. Colonial had said that the part should be covered under the contract. Also colonial’s lifetime warranty was a different company than fiore’s insurer. Who knew? I had assumed that it was all a Toyota thing. Meanwhile after 8 days of no vehicle and another trip to colorado approaching, (granddaughter living alone while her husband is deployed in poland. ), I pulled the trigger and said fix the vehicle as I needed it. My thoughts were that it was a Toyota vehicle, serviced by Toyota “certified” techs at a Toyota garage what else would I need? the day after repairs were initiated, the warranty company says that they will need a 3rd party inspection to verify the defect. Just reinstall the broken part so they can hear it and then reinstall the new part or no coverage. Also this was to take place after I should have been half way across the country. Needless to say I didn’t do it. What good is a warranty that doesn’t trust Toyota techs? out over $2500.
