5 Transmission Failure problem of the 2008 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/22/2013

While driving on inter-stat I-10 west bound close to 183 marker, at 65 mph, the rpm shot to 7000 and car started to slow down. The car stopped with transmission failure. It was 2200 hours with my family of 4 kids and wife on board. To replace the transmission (used one 90000 miles) Toyota legacy charged me 3500$. Its a lot of money. Additionally, you cannot trust Toyota brand for such poor workmanship where power train is prone to failures on 5 years old vehicles.

6 Transmission Failure problem of the 2007 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 11/12/2011

I have had this van since new. Air conditioning stopped working after 4 years with less than 60000 miles. First transmission problem started at 68000 miles. The transmission problem first reared its ugly head when I was backing out of a parking spot one early morning in November 2011. It sounded as though I had run over something. After getting out of the van and looking around it appeared as though everything looked good. I got back in the van and started to drive and could hear a rubbing sound coming from the front of the van and noticed it would slow down quicker when taking my foot off of the accelerator, so much so that your body would lean forward. Also, I noticed the van would now slow down instead of picking up speed when coasting down a hill which is something it had never done before. I brought the van into my local Toyota dealership that week to have it looked at but they said that was the way it was supposed to run. I told them 68 000 miles of driving experience since it was new has told me otherwise. They persisted with their "everything was as it should be" story and that it could be the brakes sticking occasionally. I even told them that the rubbing sound goes away when shifted into neutral which would eliminate the brakes as the cause. The vans transmission finally failed in February of 2013 at 82 000 miles after I had brought the issue up 4 times with my Toyota dealership while getting other service completed, and yes they did change the transmission fluid before all of this happened. The transmission diagnosis and subsequent repair/rebuild quoted by the Toyota dealership was $4000. Mr. Transmission charged me $3100. Like me, you have either already purchased a Toyota product or are considering the purchase. All I can say is google transmission and problems and you'll find lots to read. Good luck.

7 Transmission Failure problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/28/2009

Transmission failed at speed on I-95. With van, cargo and 5 occupants at traffic speed in the right lane, the engine raced, the van dropped out of cruise control, and we drifted to a halt on the side of the road. While moving, I shifted to "4" and "3" then back to "d" with no acceleration. Had we been in any other lane, the transition would have been harder and more dangerous than it was. The engine and other van systems continued to operate normally. When we were stopped, no forward gear produced movement, though reverse worked. A check showed the transmission fluid at normal hot level, though it was darker than normal. It took an hour on the side of the road, traffic passing alongside the van very close and very fast, before a aaa tow truck got to us. After a tow to a Toyota dealership, the transmission was replaced under the powertrain warranty due to a reported failure of the forward sprag. The failed transmission was retained by the dealer.

8 Transmission Failure problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/01/2007

I bought a new 2006 Toyota Sienna van. From the beginning, the transmission drops into neutral as the vehicle slows for stops. Upon acceleration to move through a stop sign or light, the transmission hesitates in neutral, leaving those following about to rear end the vehicle. Or, if you accelerate, the vehicle lurches into gear throwing passengers forward. I have mentioned this problem every time I have had the vehicle serviced. The serviceman acknowledges the problem, and states that Toyota claims it is a means to save the transmission. The jerking on the transmission as the vehicle goes into gear after a stop cannot be good for the vehicle. The serviceman further stated that other car models made by Toyota had experienced the same problem, but that a "computer patch" had been made available that solved the problem. He said that no such patch has been made available for the Sienna vans. My concern is that I will end up rear-ended because of the hesitation or that the transmission will fail.

10 Transmission Failure problem of the 1998 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 06/17/2006

We have a 1998 Toyota Sienna le with about 88,000 miles on it. We do not drive the car too much and most of the time it sits in our garage. On the way up to nh from NJ at June 17 2006, the transmission started to have problems, which the transmission was sometimes unable to engage. We finally made it home and sent the car to the Toyota dealer. The dealer told us "this is a known issue. " that are known for transmission failures. We understand that the extended warranty covered up to 100,000 miles and 8 years. But our car just passed it by 5-6 weeks and is well under 100,000 miles. Dealer told us to contact Toyota as it just past the deadline and has low mileage. Toyota has given us a very hard time. They insisted that it is our problem now because we didn't discover it before the 8 years deadline. Here is what is listed about in the NHTSA. Gov website that lists technical service bulletins: make: Toyota model: Sienna year: 1998 type: passenger car service bulletin number: tc03014 NHTSA item number: 10003372 summary description: extended warranty coverage regarding a no movement or a slipping condition of the automatic transaxle.

14 Transmission Failure problem of the 2000 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 12/29/2000

Transmission failed while driving at 70 mph on florida turnpike. The van had to be towed to bev smith Toyota in ft. Pierce where it remains today. We were told that the transmission are on back order in California which means they must come from japan. In doing some research, I have found that several hundred Sienna owners have experienced the same problem. I was told that our replacement transmission will have a "fix" but no one will tell us what the problem was with the original transmission. In the meantime, we have incurred nearly $2,000 additional expenses to date, will be incurring additional expenses for renting a vehicle, have lost four days of work (three family members), and have no idea when our vehicle will be returned to us. It appears that Toyota motor sales is aware of problems with the 2000 Sienna transmissions, but isn't telling owners or potential buyers of the problem.

15 Transmission Failure problem of the 2000 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 12/22/2000

We wish to place this report as it is an unusual failure for this vehicle and the apparent back order of transmissions from Toyota shows failures must be overwhelming. It is a sudden failure and presents a tremendous danger to drivers. Ours failed while at high speed on the interstate. We were nearly rear ended and the crash would have been devasting. We certainly are interested in discovering how many other Sienna's or similarly equipped vehicles using the same transmission have failed.

16 Transmission Failure problem of the 2000 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/24/2000

The first transmission failed on an interstate highway going 65 miles per hour. The out of state Toyota dealer, Toyota west, in statesville, n. C. , completely replaced our transmission and converter assembly. Within two and a half months the entire assembly failed again. Our local dealer, koons Toyota, replaced the transmission and converter again. This time they did not put a new transmission in but a rebuilt one. We were told no new transmissions were in the united states!.
