As I drive on dry roads at speeds between 35 - 65mph, my car indicator lights and alarm sound off about vsc (vehicle stability control) and slippery road lights on my dashboard. My vehicle's steering and braking are affected by it. It starts to rattle the steering wheel and the braking pumps - causing a reduction in speed and control for the driver. It caused me to fear a possible vehicular accident so much that I pulled off the road. The problem then disappears and doesn't reappear until I encounter a similar driving condition. I fear that if this occurs on a crowded highway, it will cause me to get into a vehicular accident due to the abrupt loss of control. My minivan was purchased to keep my family 'safer' and this experience is causing me to fear using this vehicle. After conducting an internet search it appears to be happening to Toyota Sienna vehicles between model years 2004 - 2008. Mechanics don't seem to understand how to fix other than resetting the sensors; which doesn't fix the problem but just delays its reappearance. In all cases, I experienced this problem only while driving at speeds between 35mph and higher. It's occurred on dry and wet roads, usually while on a curved road.

I was driving on the freeway at approximately 70mph on dry asphalt on a sunny day when the stability control warning light came on along with rapid beeping. What was the most concerning was that the breaks activated twice causing me to have a near panic attack and I didn't think I had control of the vehicle. After a few seconds, the beeping stopped and I had full control of the vehicle again. There was no apparent cause for these safety features to have been engaged and no longer feel safe driving this vehicle. This is not the only time it has happened but it was the scariest. The other times have been at slower speeds and the brakes don't always engage. I have read numerous posts online describing the same issue with other Siennas and it doesn't seem like Toyota wants to do anything about this extremely hazardous issue.

Driving 35-55 mph and going around (usually) a left curve on the highway or interstate, van suddenly brakes, swerves, and traction control/vehicle stability control light pops on. Whole episode lasts a second or two, then its fine. It wont happen again for the duration of the trip. I only drive the van on weekends, and it has happened three times in the past two weeks. It has nearly caused a serious accident.

While driving the stability warning light comes on, starts beeping loudly and my brakes and steering wheel lock up. This has happened multiple times on the freeway, on freeway entrances with a slight turn and even while just driving straight. Each time, the weather was clear and the roads are dry. This happens whether I am driving at a slow speed entering a slight turn on the highway anywhere from 20 to 40 mph and has recently happened while driving about 50 mph on a dry highway just driving straight. The car has also began beeping and flashing the stability light without locking up the steering and brakes. I have almost cause a few accidents with cars almost rear ending my van and me almost sideswiping other cars while this is happening and I have no control of the car. This is frightening! I have had my struts replaced, right drive shaft, brakes, tires, alignment. The repair shops say they have not been able to duplicate this issue when they drive it. There does not appear to be a recall on anything to do with this which is shocking. I have a Sienna van so I can carry multiple people with me. I have my infant grandchild with me in this van each day as well as my teenage daughter. I have an appointment with maita Toyota tomorrow morning (1/25/18), we'll see what they say, but honestly, I feel Toyota needs to stand by their cars and fix this issue at no charge. There are complaints describing this exact issue all over the internet so it is not an isolated problem. This form asks for the date this happened below, I'll add todays date, but it has been going on for over a year.

While driving my 2006 Toyota Sienna minivan the vehicle stability control light and alarms come on when driving in non hazardous conditions (e. G. . No water on the highway). This happens occasionally on straight roads as well as curves and hills when driving at highway speeds. The steering wheel may "lockup" for a few seconds and the brakes seem to engage. The problem corrects itself and may go away or reappear in a few miles. This happened on our 2006 Sienna a few years ago but we replaced the defective tires and the problem went away until recently. I have read that other Sienna minivan owners have experienced this problem with their vehicles and some owners have had hit-or-miss success in getting the issue resolved when taking the car in for service from a Toyota dealership. My next step is to take my car into our local Toyota dealer to perform a diagnostic exam to try and determine the cause of the vehicle stability control issue. I have contacted Toyota customer care to let them know of this issue. I have read that several other makes of Toyota vehicles have experienced vehicle stability control issues in the past and have been recalled (such as the 2003 Toyota sequoia).
The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stability control off warning light illuminated and engine would surge, the rpms would decrease and the vehicle would jerk to the left. The contact indicated that the failure would occur for approximately 10 seconds. The cause of the failure was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 145,000.

While driving on freeway the stability control light came on, warning started beeping, and brakes were automatically applied. The vehicle had no power until it had slowed down, then had reduced power. The beeping continued and the dashboard warning light remained on for a few minutes. After the beeping and the light went out, drivability was normal. The car behind us nearly collided with us when this happened. Conditions: smooth, dry pavement. Nothing that should have caused this problem. This problem has occured a half dozen times over the last week or two.
When driving around 40-65 mph, the car begins to beep, the vsc light and stability control (slip indicator) lights come on, the brakes are applied, and the steering wheel seems to act on its own for a few seconds. It cannot always be replicated, but has occurred more than once on the same curve and about a dozen times over the past couple of years. This is a very frightening event, especially since it happens at higher speeds and on a curve. . Read more...
Summary: sensor in stability control failed and falsely reported crisis situation, causing computer to seize control to slow vehicle and change course. Long version: while driving straight on city street, suddenly vehicle slowed and pulled to side, stability control light and audio alarm activated, heard grinding noise that sounded like abs. Condition persisted if driving over 5-10 mph. Crawled to nearby non-dealer repair shop. Diagnosis/solution: steering angle sensor reporting wheels at 250 degrees when actually straight ahead, would not recalibrate, circuit integrity othewise good, sensor was replaced. No residual problems noted so far since then (one day). I have the failed sensor. This sensor problem was cause of a production change and TSB br008-04 in the first year. Obviously Toyota has known about this problem for years, but no recall. Other accounts exist on line of people who have had this happen. This is a major safety hazard. It's the mechanical equivalent of riding with a driver on lsd who is braking/swerving to avoid hallucinations. I was lucky to be going slowly on an uncrowded street, but at higher speed or crowded conditions this could be a disaster. Toyota has not been terribly helpful so far, but discussion will continue. . . .
