The problem that exists is on my 2003 Toyota Tacoma. It will all of a sudden lose power and have no throttle response, almost as if it was hitting an engine governor. The rpms usually drop anywhere from 200-500 and then comes back up. The power would slowly come back after keeping my foot on the throttle. It consistently does it after accelerating out of an intersection (usually around 25 mph or while cruising (around both 45 mph or 75 mph) on the highway. This drop of power or lack thereof is a huge safety issue, especially when pulling into an intersection or needing quick acceleration to avoid an accident. I have read about many others with the same issues with their late model Tacomas. The parts to fix the issue are very costly and the problem seems to be widespread. [xxx] request research. While on a camping trip my 2007 Toyota Tacoma suffered a sudden unintended acceleration event. While applying the brakes and coming to a stop the Tacoma suddenly accelerated and flew over two good size boulders a cast iron fire pit and came to a rest after hitting a solid concrete picnic table. A report was filed with coho campground hosts acting as to go on file with the washington state forestry department. This even occurred at the wynoochee dam and reservoir located in the pacific northwest of washington state. The truck was remanded to Toyota of olympia washington and the insurance carrier was notified. The truck was due for the well documented Toyota floor mat, gas pedal and braking acceleration override modification. Now listen carefully here. . . The floor mats were heavy duty rubber non-Toyota brand mats. They were not impeding the gas pedal in any way shape or form. The truck accelerated instantly while braking and almost at a dead stop. Review of NHTSA findings on this issue are shocking. I did not hit the accelerator by mistake, there is a huge difference in the size, feel and consistency of these two incredibly different pedals. Many children and campers were present in this campground, the sheer luck that no one was killed is a matter of fate. The fact I am writing you from my living room and not a jail cell while being held for vehicular manslaughter is a miracle. This is not driver error, you have a bunch of 4 wheel time bombs out there traversing the nations highways. With over 30 years in technical electronic systems I assure you this truck accelerated from an almost dead stop while my right foot was on the gigantic break pedal, not the little tiny gas pedal. Hear me, believe me. . . . . End of story.

Vehicle loses power unexpectedly and is inconsistent. Has happened before to me and many, many times by others with the same vehicle. A poorly designed/engineered accelerator pedal position sensor appears to be the issue. Toyota has been notified by me multiple times but refuses to acknowledge this serious flaw in their vehicle. Most recently, I was nearly rear ended when on the freeway, the vehicle suddenly lost power. Fortunately the driver behind me was conscious and was able to make an emergency maneuver to the other lane. . Read more...
Tl- the contact owns a 1998 Toyota Tacoma. While stopped at a red light the contact smelled a strong fuel smell coming in through the vents. The dealer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics. The contact stated she had suffered various respiratory complications since the failure began and believed it may be caused by the fuel smell. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 180,000. Ds.

The check engine light came on as the car decelerated. I had to depress the gas peddle to the floor to accelerate the vehicle. Took it to the dealer and they told me the choke was sticking and I needed to have an upper engine cleaning. 10000 miles later the same thing happened. Now I need a new throttle body.
2nd time a gas pedal stuck on my 2005 Toyota Tacoma truck leading to a 2nd collision with property damage to my truck & the car in front of me. Coming up to a red light with plenty of room to stop on a flat rd. There where skid marks from my truck and I had both feet on the brake and the engine increased inspeed. The dealer still does not have the parts to repair this problem even after my first accident in June of last year and again in July of this year. Toyota said they would turn it over to there legal dept. And the truck was to be inspected by a engineering firm from the west. The inspection firm was in a hurry to inspect the truck and called in July now they won't return my calls. This firm was hired by Toyota. Also during the repair it was found that the air bag had shorted out and did not deploy. If you have one of Toyota's trucks on the recall list be very careful and don't expect any help from the dealer or Toyota fixing the problem. As I said it is the 2nd time for both items to fail.

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. Since the vehicle was purchased he smelled fuel inside of the vehicle after starting it. The dealer could not duplicate the failures. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer to repair the vehicle; however, the contact does not know what component was repaired. He also stated the driver's side seat belt sensor failed and the seat belt off warning light illuminated on the warning panel. The dealer confirmed that the sensor had failed. No repairs were made to the seat belt. The failure and current mileages were under 65,000.

The truck accelerated and would not stop I had both feet on the brakes they was as hard as a rock and the truck kept accelerating ,I was on a two lane road. I was coming quickly upon cars in front of me and I put the gear shift in 3rd out of drive and back in ,and truck engine came back under my control . Engine came down but ,a little later the brakes would not stop the truck. I managed to get it home and I am afraid to drive it. I called Toyota and they said I had to drive it to one of their dealers or they can not help me. I am afraid to drive it what should I do I do not want to hurt myself or some one else it has nothing to do with the floor mat. I ask the lady if she would promise me it would not happen on the way to the dealers she would not I ask her if they would tow it she said at my expense. I refused and she hung up the phone. She called me back on Dec 21 and said she had contacted Toyota lawyers and they can not help me. I need more information on what to do if you can help me .
I received a recall notification from Toyota in October of 2009 for accelerator pedals sticking to carpet. The letter from Toyota stated they would contact me on what to do next to get it fixed. Its February 12, 2010 and I have heard nothing from them about what to do on this issue.
Problem: throttle hung in a wide-open position while driving. No carpet problem was involved. This has happened twice to me in a two week span!!! I would like to report a serious problem with my 2006 Tacoma. On 10/29/09 while towing a trailer I experienced the first occurrence. I had two passengers with me that can attest to the truth of my situation. I depressed the throttle and the motor suddenly went to a wide-open position. Fortunately, I was not in heavy traffic. I attempted to slow the truck with brakes alone but they could not stop the acceleration of the truck. My only thought was to turn off the ignition. I did so and brought the truck and trailer to a safe stop although it was very difficult without the power brakes being active along with the fact that I was also towing a trailer. I checked the throttle and gas pedal connections and found no obvious problems. I then attempted to restart the truck to see if possibly the computer cleared itself. When I turned on the ignition, the motor started and instantly went into a full-open throttle mode. I shut it off before it reached a very high level. We then checked all the same things we already checked and I decided to try starting the truck again. This time, it started and ran like nothing ever was wrong. We drove the truck home with no other problems. I brought the truck to my local Toyota dealer where I had purchased it. They inspected both the throttle body, engine codes, and test drove it and told me that they could find nothing wrong. I was sent on my way with no charge to me. They gave me no paperwork as I normally get but I did confirm that this complaint was put into their computer system. This same problem happened to me once more on 11/02/09 which also happened to be my birthday. I feel extremely fortunate to not have been involved in any accident to date but I must tell you that I do not feel safe driving this vehicle at the present time. Ref. Toyota national headquarters file #0911125974.
2007 Toyota Tacoma throttle sticking while climbing above 5000 ft in mountains throttle stuck wile trying to shift in mountains engine raced until slowly let out clutch shifting in mountains when I came down to normal altitude problem went away. Think it is in computer not gas pedal.
My concern involves the vacuum braking system on my 2009 Toyota Tacoma double cab. The brakes are very inconsistent and at times the rpm's increase while braking. Sometimes they are very 'sticky' and more often it takes considerable force on the brake pedal to stop. I've informed kerry Toyota of florence, ky of my concerns multiple times with no resolution. This is an on-going problem that has not gotten better with time. Also, I've had several issues regarding hesitation when pressing on the accelerator. It was taken in to the dealer and I was told nothing was wrong.

Accelerator sticks when I let off the gas pedal. Pedal does not stay physically depressed, it just doesn't slow down. If I push in clutch, engine races and rpm stays high. Dealer told me this was engineered into the vehicle to "assist with shifting".
I was passing another vehicle in my 2007 Toyota Tacoma. The accelerator stuck while passing. I tapped it twice trying to release it and applied the brakes. The accelerator pedal would not release and the vehicle continued to accelerate. I quickly turned off the ignition and coasted to a stop. The pedal was still laying on the floor when I stopped so I opened the engine hood and looked to see if I could see the cable linkage and see what was causing the problem. I then went back to the cab to see if the floor mat was causing the problem (it was not). As I came to the cab door I heard a pop as the accelerator pedal snapped back up (about two minutes after coasting to a stop). I then started the vehicle and it drove normally. I took the vehicle to the dealer to have it checked out. They said they could find no error codes and that they could not find anything wrong with the accelerator.
In late may 2009 while on highway 50 in sacramento just east of the 50/80 interchange in good weather (dry and clear) my 2006 Toyota Tacoma's gas pedal buried itself to the floor and the vehicle went to maximum acceleration. Braking only had a slight initial effect and then overheated and faded. After a lucky 4 miles I shifted to neutral and the problem resolved. This began around 60mph and maxed around 107. During the 4 miles I activated and deactivated my cruise several times, tapped the brakes, reached down and pulled on the pedal and the mat, the recent Toyota explanations of sticking pedal and mat issues did not apply and I find them ludicrous. . It is an eerie feeling to have your accelerator leave your foot on its own. Truck had 36,500 miles, never in an accident, was in good repair with regular maintenance and was stock except for a shell. While owned the truck had experienced the at stop surge described by many others where it felt like someone tapped the back of the truck while waiting in an intersection. Loved the truck until that day, and respected Toyota. Had this happened on another road or with heavier traffic it would have had a different outcome. Traded the vehicle two weeks later at great loss of equity. Someone else now owns this vehicle.
Toyota Tacoma, 2003 acceleration drops to 25% inadvertently. This is a well documented issue on several of the Toyota Tacoma bulletin boards yet Toyota has done nothing to remedy this highly dangerous situation. The accelerator pedal position sensor fails and drops the acceleration to 25% without warning. This happened to me while doing 75 on the highway and I was nearly rear ended by a semi truck! I have complained to Toyota with no response. This is well documented and needs to be addressed!.
2008 Toyota Tacoma sport trd 4x4 truck. I was driving on the highway at about 65mph and went to change lanes to pass and the accelerator seemed to have stuck and keep accelerating even know I wasn't pushing the gas & the brake felt like a weight not a normal brake pedal. The truck also has higher idle at time of and has done this several times but not all the time. The garage claims they can't find an issue and they tell you not to worry about it. The consequences to this failure or action is vary dangerous as the vehicle seems uncontrollable and you couldn't slow it, even when down shifting it would wind out. It lasts about 1 mile or so (sometimes longer) and then seems to go back to normal. My main concern is that I have already filed for the Toyota dispute settlement program but have not heard anything to date, I filed because my brand new Tacoma has many, many other issues and nobody will help or fix it being certified Toyota dealership/garage or the California Toyota corp. They don't care 1 bit and claim it's under warranty but the garage needs to tell them what's wrong with it to fix it. A massive huge run around. I have also researched this myself and it seems to be a growing problem and have a reported 400+ cases of similar instances. Toyota does not stand behind their trucks anymore. Something needs to be done before people get seriously injured and or die from this issue. I don't feel safe driving this truck for several reasons and that being the most important 1. Also you can find many many more others that have this issue on consumeraffairs. Com under Toyota recalls or problems. Have a look. The trucks have major issues and nobody seems to care about it. I was a loyal Toyota owner until all this. I had a 2003 Tacoma with vary similar issues and should of never went back for more.

2006 Toyota Tacoma 2. 7 liter engine. Purchased and @ 42k miles fuel smell enters cabin. I does not happen all the time but suspect the air injected exhaust system a failure. The smell of fuel is so bad I have to stop and remove everyone from vehicle due to nausea, and light headed.
My engine light on my 2003 Toyota Tacoma keeps coming on. I sent $1000 to replace the oxygen sensor and then the evap connector assembly. The engine light is still on. The repair shop told me they've replaced many of these on Toyotas.
My 2003 Toyota Tacoma v6 sr5 double cab 4x4 has a condition where the throttle cuts out while accelerating. This is a very dangerous situation when pulling into traffic or while driving in traffic.
My 08 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 that I purchase on 3/5/08 has had a throttle and steering problem from the day I purchase it. My truck has been checked by freeman Toyota of hurst, TX several times and Toyota of irving. Toyota of irving called in a factory representative, who also checked and drove it. All telling me the truck was programmed to act the way it was performing. On 12/05/08 I filled a complaint with ncds, case# 6008198. The arbitration results between Toyota motor sales, u. S. A. , inc. , gulf states Toyota distributors, inc. Houston, TX and myself, was, "the vehicle is performing as designed. " my Toyota Tacoma still does not respond to the driver, but I have not seen any recalls on my 2008 Tacoma 4x4.
After driving for approximately 2 hours, on three separate occasions, the vehicle would intermittently lose significant power. It felt as though I had taken my foot off the throttle. After my own investigation, I learned that Toyota has a history of this problem, particularly with their 2003/2004 model Tacoma's. Evidently, their accelerator pedal position sensor (part of their throttle by wire design) fails. This created a few serious safety situations for me when the throttle failed to respond when needed. After reporting this to the dealer, they inspected the vehicle and did determine the apps was at fault. Numerous accounts of this happening with other owner's is readily available via the various bulletin boards on the web. Compounding the issue, is the fact that this sensor cannot be replaced without replacing the entire throttle body assembly at a cost of $1000 or so. Toyota initially responded that they've never heard of this issue yet others have reported to them prior to me which indicates either they have a very poor process for logging issues or are trying to avoid another recall.
I was driving my 2001 Toyota Tacoma extended cab when another vehicle hit me behind the drivers door and my truck exploded in to flames. I could not get out of the vehicle from the drivers side and had to go through the flames in the cab to get out the passenger side. I suffered burns and was hospitalized in the burn unit.

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Tacoma. The contact smelled asphyxiate gas fumes when cold starting the vehicle. The dealer was unable to diagnose or duplicate the failure. The current mileage is 8,000, and the failure mileage is unknown. There were no warning indicators. The consumer provided a copy of repair invoice. The dealer stated creak sound clutch pedal when depressed and difficulty putting into 4wd, but factory never able to duplicate the problem. Updated 07/06/07.
Intermittent check engine light and rough idle - 2003 Toyota Tacoma 2. 7l auto, double cab, 55k miles check engine light came on. Took vehicle to local chain shop who diagnosed error code po511 - idle air control valve (iacv). Toyota parts department prices this part at $226 and service manager indicated $249 for labor (not including tax). Vehicle currently has 55k miles on it and "engine" should be covered by 6 yr/60k mile powertrain warranty. Took vehicle to dealer (to have other recalls corrected) who indicated a $90 fee was required just to diagnose check engine light. Toyota customer service indicated the iacv was only covered to 3yr/36k and that I should pay dealer fee and seek "factory assistance" for any costs to repair. I contend that this type of a part - not serviceable/maintainable by the customer, should be guaranteed against failure for more than ~50k miles and repair should be covered by manufacturer.
I have a 1999 Toyota Tacoma and the gas pedal does stick. It has always 'corrected' itself causing the truck to lurch. Mechanics have said for years now that there is nothing wrong with it. In light of recent events maybe later models could be looked into.
