Toyota Tacoma owners have reported 27 problems related to horn assembly (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota Tacoma based on all problems reported for the Tacoma.
My vehicle failed va inspection due to the horn not working. I have to get the spiral cable replaced per the auto repair shop. This was a recall on Tacoma's up to 2009 (recall b1801) but not my year. My year should be part of the recall. I believe this also impacts the airbag deployment from the steering wheel.

Horn will not work with the steering wheel centered. If you turn the steering wheel 90% to the left or right the horn has worked sometimes. Toyota issued a recall for this problem on other Tacomas but not for the 2012. The Toyota dealership is saying that its most likely the clock spring.

Horn will not work with the steering wheel centered. If you turn the steering wheel to the left or right and pushing the horn it will work. Toyota issued a recall for this problem on 2005-2009 Tacoma but not for the 2012. Toyota has known that they have a problem with the clock spring that they won't address on the 2012s.
Toyota has know that the clock spring has been failing for years. They issued a recall for model years 2005-2009. Trucks in the model years 2010-2012 are also affected. Problems - loss of horn, loss of airbag. Optional if equipped - loss of cruise control and/or loss of radio controls. This is a major safety hazard! loss or horn and loss of air bags are a very, very dangerous situation!!! the clock spring fails randomly so you might not be aware until it is too late!!!.
Air bag light is on. Horn not working. Fuses good- wire harness recall completed 2012 Nov. Problem seems to be related to the same components. Now over 240k miles on the vehicle.

Horn not working . Was told it was in steering wheel.
My horn stopped working a month ago-replaced relay-now airbag light is on- after reaading complaints, seems the two are related and recalled on earlier versions.
The airbag light just turned on. Cruise control on steering wheel is not functioning, audio control on steering not working also and lastly the horn is not working also. Looks like a spiral cable problem based on the symptom and validation of discussion group online. Checked for recall here and seen my VIN number on the range for recall. Why did I not received any recall notice on this. Not sure if the vehicle is unsafe to drive considering the airbag deployed light is on or if this will affect the airbag deloyment if needed. This happened just recently and there are issues similar to my case. Hope it can be fixed by Toyota.

Issue was noticed while driving, attempted to activate horn when vehicle in oncoming lane crossed in to my lane. Horn would not activate. Thankfully other driver course corrected in time. Complaint is related to has been reported to me by Toyota as sudden failure of the clock spring or spiral cable. Horn failed approximately one week after vehicle had just passed an annual state inspection. Was informed that this is something "that happens" with time and forced to pay $700 to have repaired. Was warned that part that failed was also in control of airbags, cruise control and other electronics embedded in the steering column. This is an item which has previously been voluntarily recalled on other model years of Toyota Tacoma's and other models.

Horn quit working, only works when the wheel is turned to the left, fuses are good and so are the relays.
Horn stopped working at approximately 95000 miles. Spoke with technician and was told this problem was possibly related to the airbag.
Horn stopped working at approximately 48,000 miles. After troubleshooting the problem, I discovered that the issue was related to the spiral cable. About 2 months after the horn stopped working, the steering wheel controlled phone function began auto-activating intermittently with the words "talking" appearing on the radio display (this function is also related to the spiral cable). I am very concerned that the air bag may soon become inoperable if the air bag electrical contacts on the spiral cable fail. While my vehicle VIN was not included in a recall for this issue, I understand that Toyota did file a part 573 defect information report with NHTSA for selected 2009-2010 Tacoma vehicles. The vehicle horn is considered a safety device, and as a result of this failure, my vehicle horn became inoperable. More importantly, the air bag will not function as designed when the spiral cable contacts for the air bag fail. I would expect that this type of safety critical device be designed to last for the useful service life of the vehicle. Failure after less than 6 years (and 48,000 miles) is much sooner than should be expected for this type of vehicle. I would appreciate if NHTSA would consider this information along with other related information in your possession to determine if there is a basis for follow-up with Toyota motor corporation to provide a remedy for vehicle owners that have experienced premature spiral cable failure that affects multiple vehicle safety devices.
My 2012 Tacoma has a spiral wire issue that dealer refuses to fix even though this part is associated with the takata recall in previous year models wondering why the recall stopped at 2011 and does not cover the issue with my truck. Currently only affectin the use of my horn but as seen in previous recalls could affect more lthings later on.
My horn stopped working and when I took my truck to the dealer he said that it was the clock spring cable inside of the steering wheel. The service agent daniel arviza at north bakersfield Toyota in bakersfield California advised me that if I didn't get it fixed that the airbag could fail to deploy in the case of an accident. This seems like a important part of the truck to fail after only 3 years. I bought the truck new from the dealership and the warranty has expired. It's going to cost almost 500 dollars, but because it is a safety issue I have no choice but to have the part replaced.
While driving fuse panel under dash caught fire after using horn excessively. Fire was put out immediately but damage resulted in a melted fuse panel and wiring harness.
My horn stopped working and my airbag light stays on. I was told this was an sprial cable problem in the sterring wheel colum. Was told to check onrecalls for this has been a problem with this type truck.
The horn ceased to work in the straight ahead position of the steering wheel. Toyota charged me $530 to replace the spiral cable. I considered it a safety issue. Consider driving on a busy highway and the vehicle next to you tries to move into your lane. I wrote a letter of complaint to Toyota USA. They responded only that my vehicle was out of warranty.
The horn stopped working, spiral cable is bad, which also affects the airbag. This has been recalled on all previous models of this generation Tacoma and needs to be recalled for the 2011 as well.
The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Tacoma. While driving various speeds, the horn failed to work without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the spiral cable needed to be replaced. The dealer stated that the repair would cost $500. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer stated that there was no recall and could not assist. The failure mileage was 48,000.
Horn stopped working, so did the cruise control. Airbag light is on sometimes dealer said I need a new clock spring and air bag because the horn switch is inside the airbag.
Horn stopped working a couple of years ago. My research showed it was same problem with 2010 Tacoma's,and they were recalled! read there was a recall to replace a defective spiral cable in steering wheel. Called Toyota was told to take to dealer, but would have to pay,and maybe be reimbursed. Don't have the money been unemployed for 4 years.
The spiral cable failed. The spiral cable connects the horn button and driver's airbag to the rest of the car. When it fails, the airbag and horn won't work. Toyota already recalled the spiral cable on '05-'09 Tacoma's. The spiral cables are still failing, so they need to recall later years and fix them too.
A truck pulled out in front of me at intersection rt 46 on 07/31/13. I went to beep the horn and it didn't work. I wasn't able to confirm problem because very busy till 11/04/13. Confirmed problem caused by faulty spiral cable within the steering wheel. As per conversation with Toyota 1-800-331-4331 on 11/04/13 (case #1311040283) to have dealer confirm problem with as I understood would warranty part only, problem confirmed by dealer 12/09/13,Toyota, [xxx] called declined goodwill warranty. I replaced spiral cable at my expense, horn now works. The spiral cable also contain within it wires for steering radio controls, the air bag and the horn. As bad weather approached the lack of a working horn became a huge safety issue. Toyota recalled all 05 to 09 (495,000 ) Tacoma for the same part# spiral cable ( airbag ) information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

Airbag warning light on and horn does not work. After researching, learned this is an airbag clock spring (otherwise known as a spiral cable) issue that has a related recall for 2005-2009 Toyota Tacomas under campaign number 12v-092. That recall applies only to 7 channel circuit spiral cables and not the 16 channel ones. The 7 channel circuits are steering wheels without the audio controls, where the 16 channel circuits have steering wheel audio controls. Toyota dealer wants to charge $400 for part, plus labor. Absolutely ridiculous when this is an obvious problem that is occurring regardless of the channel circuit type. My daughter has a 2008 Toyota tundra with exact same problem.

Air bag light on, horn not working. Dealer said defective clock spring in steering column.
I was driving my 2006 Toyota Tacoma when airbag warning light went on. This was brought to the dealer immediately the next day and diagnosis is failed spiral cable. The spiral cable senses more than the airbag and includes the steering wheel, horn, and cruise control. Cost of replacement is $603. 31.
Without warning and at anytime the air bag light goes on and off, and the horn blows out on its own. He had to disconnect the battery because of the horn. Dealer said they would charge the caller for looking for the problem. Manufacturer has not been contacted yet.
