3 Instrument Panel problem of the 2006 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 12/19/2007

On all 2005 and 2006 Toyota Tacomas the fourwheel drive selector switch does not light up and is very difficult to find when driving at night. I needed to put the truck into fourwheel drive and had to feel around the dashboard for a few seconds before I could get it into fourwheel drive. I feel that this is a safety issue that could result in an accident and someone getting hurt because they can't get into fourwheel drive in a hurry if they need to. I contacted my local Toyota dealer but they said there was nothing they could do. I also contacted Toyota headquarters and told them about the problem but I don't think they will do anything based on their response. All other Toyota fourwheel drive models have fourwheel drive switches that do light up. All Tacoma models from atleast 2001 to 2004 have switches that light up. I don't know if they changed the switch on the 2007 or 2008 Tacomas. This is a very popular truck and there are thousands of them on the road. I am not the only person who is not happy about this. There are a number Tacoma forums on the internet where people are complaing about this problem.

There was a clunking noise when shifting occurred that became constant as the problem worsened. The vehicle was taken to a service dealer but the problem was not corrected. These problems happened shortly after the carpeting was replaced due to water leaking through the firewall. The manufacturer was notified. The consumer stated the vehicle jumped out of park and into reverse. On numerous occasions the truck stalled. Updated 12/18/06.

6 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 09/01/2006

I purchased a 2003 Toyota Tacoma. I have had a problem with the brake light coming on in the winter. When I press the brake the first time the light stays on until the truck warms up; then goes out. I took the truck to Toyota and they couldn't find a problem. Now the light is periodically coming up and staying on a couple of minutes in the warm weather. I again took it to Toyota and they again couldn't find a problem.

8 Instrument Panel problem of the 2006 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 06/20/2006

9 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 09/19/2005

While passing several radar signs, I noticed my trucks speedometer was reading about 8% above the actual speed I was traveling. A check at a "speedometer check" where they have mileage signs every mile for several miles also confirmed this. A trip with my gps also showed the speedometer was inaccurate. The dealership checked my truck on their smog dyno and said my speedometer was only 1 mph off at 40 mph. They inferred that satellites, police radar and my wrist watch are less accurate than their smog test dyno, not likely. I'm getting ripped off for 8% of my warranty!.
