2000 Toyota Tundra sr5 4door 4. 7 liter v8. Sunroof glass blew off on freeway at 65mph almost hit car behind me. No police report, no person injured. November 3, 2025.
Excessive frame rust that is quickly progressing despite efforts to remedy. There was a recall due to this issue but I was told a few years ago by Toyota that my VIN was not covered. All the 2000 Tundra's have this issue with the frame rust but I was told I am not in the north east and would not be covered.
Frame of the vehicle is starting to rust, clear coat paint is wearing off and is starting to chip with small spots of rust on the roof and hood, lower ball joint failure due to corrosion and degraded components. Unknown why the lower ball joint failed. Vehicle is not in the rust belt but definitely experiences corrosion and suspension issues.
Frame of truck rusting apart rust problem identified by independent dealer. I was told by repair shop that the frame could twist apart at any moment.
When I drive my vehicle it is difficult to apply the brakes on it and I feel like if I press too hard (which might be necessary if I need to suddenly stop) that the brakes might break or fail somehow. I have also noticed that underneath my truck, the frame is rotting out in certain areas and the leafs (steel long plates near the rear of the vehicle) is bending out of shape. There is a clanking noise near the front of the vehicle that concerns me as well when I pass through a small bump.
Frame rust really bad.
The frame is damaged and was told my manufacture was supposed to replace with a new one. The truck looks to be bent in between the middle. I took it to my local dealer and they are having me pay for other areas and not replacing the frame even though it's under recall.

The remedy for the recall stated that the in the cases that the frames were severly corroded, they would be replaced, and in the cases that replacement was not needed, the frames would be or undercoated in order to prevent corrosion. The truck is in awesome condition except the frame. Toyota has replaced the frames in other trucks in the past but are unwilling to take into consideration the one I own. I feel very unsafe driving it, and don't want to get rid of it because of its one negative thing . I'm going to include some photos so you can judge if you wish. If their is anything your company do to help me, it'll be greatly appreciated. I have reach out to Toyota in the past and all they've said was that their is no recall on the truck anymore. Its very sad because their is plenty of these trucks out there, and are very unsafe to the owner and pedestrians around us. They should recall certain ones like the one I own on account of its condition. Thank you very much for your time.

I has a lot corrosion in the chasis holes I can't place the spare tire because the corrosion it's everywhere.
This vehicle has two safety recalls but Toyota refuses to address the issue because they say its too old of a recall. And it not a new vehicle.
Previously recalled rusted cross member dropped spare tire on massachusetts 495 hitting the vehicle behind me. 8/18 Toyota inspected cross members and frame and told me they all needed to be replaced and since they already did it once during recall they have fulfilled obligation. Truck recieved vehicle undercoating per campaign has had one crossember replaced and fuel straps. Truck is one owner with 74k miles and garaged. Truck inspected in 2014 and in 2017 noted no corrosion at multi point inspections from Toyota. 8/14/18 dealership noted crossmembers had rot that must be welded at an outside shop. Toyota dealership would not quote repair and not work on truck. Have 2 children 3 and 5, wife and I need a safe resolution from Toyota. The recommendation is repair at an outside shop for safety reason and I unable to find a shop to preform Toyota's recommendation and they will not work on vehicle.
This vehicle was part of an earlier recall for corrosion of the frame and component parts. Toyota replaced the frame along with a corroded leaking gas tank. Approximately one week ago we noticed an oil leak from our rear differential. Upon inspection by our local mechanic he determined the rear differential housing is corroded this causing a leak. This vehicle is known for its severe corrosion of frame and component parts. We discussed out concernes over the wide spread corrosion with corporate Toyota when the frame was replaced. I contacted corporate Toyota yesterday to discuss the current issue and was told they would only consider our claim after the vehicle was inspected by a Toyota dealer at our cost. I was also informed that it was very unlikely that Toyota would repair the vehicle because of the age. This vehicle is mechanically sound and we intend to keep it, however the corrosion issue is prematurely ending the life of the vehicle. I contacted the local Toyota dealer and was told by the service manager that they have seen this issue and address it with spray on epoxy to stop the oil leak. They could not confirm that would work on our vehicle until they inspect it. We believe Toyota should inspect the damage free of charge due to the known issue they have with corrosion. The brake component attached to the rear differential are also showing excessive corrosion and we are concerned these components will fail causing an accident.
The contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tundra. Upon inspecting the vehicle, rust was noticed on the frame, cross member, and the fuel straps, which were extending to the fuel tank. The contact was concerned that the components could fracture. The dealer (cumberland Toyota, 1540 interstate dr, cookeville, TN 38501, (931) 520-4149) indicated that the statute expired to receive the recall remedy and refused to repair the vehicle per NHTSA campaign number: 09v444000 (structure). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was not available.
I have tried to get Toyota to replace my frame for about maybe six years. I have taken and had the treatment around the spare tire on the frame treated, and over a couple of year all of the black colored treatment just feel off on my driveway in charleston wv where I lived at the time. I went back to love Lexus and Toyota to have my frame checked to see if they could replace it according to the settlement of the 2000-2003 Tundra trucks. Loves said my frame looked ok to them and they could not do anything at that time. This was about a year and a half ago. Now my left front side of my frame has a hole in the under neath side of the frame and the strut bar is ripping away from the frame. . . I called and talked to alexus, and al , and a higher up man in the company named rob, they would not give me better I. D. Than that, I told him this story as I'm sure his underling al did, that is why rob called me on Aug 22nd and told me there were no avenues that he (rob) could see to help me. Then I said would he help me trade for a newer truck and he (rob) said that would be up to me to do. My Tundra is undriveable and I think Toyota should fix it in the deal that was made for the 2000 to 2003 toyoya Tundra trucks. What do I do to get some help. Walk to whre I want to go? I am on disability and I have very bad conditions, and I don't make enough money to go buy a vehicle. I think if my vehicle meets their specs for repair my truck should be fixed!!!! I tried to find out the lawyers who won or settled this case and could not find any help in doing this? help from tony of huntington wv. Thank you.
Tl the contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tundra. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 09v444000 (structure); however, the parts to do the repair were unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact called a local dealer (carter Toyota, 160 w 3rd Ave, colville, wa 99114) and was informed that he was responsible for any damage to the vehicle during the recall repairs. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified and did not assist. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

Vehicle was recalled due to holes in the frame. At 139080 miles Toyota junctions inspected it and plugged hole and also sprayed the frame as a cover up, instead of replacing it. After 1000s of dollars of work done to alot of rust. We are now at 152000 miles and it is a total rust and holes thru out.
Rear brake line and proportioning valve failed causing the braking of the vehicle to be unsafe while driving on a local interstate roadway. The corrosion of the rear cross member is a known recall (see attached) NHTSA campaign 09v444000 recall date: 2009-11-18 which I just found today while searching for a proportional valve replacement part! our VIN is showing 0 recalls, but this cannot be ignored due to a VIN! due to the corrosion, special steps will need to be taken by the repair shop to even fix this problem. Living in pennsylvania, driving on winding, steep hills is even more of a reason that this recall should not be VIN specific. I am asking that the repairs needed to my vehicle (brake linings and proportional valve must be replaced!) be covered by the manufacturer recall that is still in place until 2019. Component affected in this recall: structure: frame and members:underbody sheilds how can a specific VIN be excluded when it poses a risk factor and possibility of a fatal crash! please help us reach out to the manufacturer to include this VIN in the recall.
The contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tundra. After the vehicle struck a pothole, it made an abnormal noise and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the O2 sensor was defective. Upon further inspection, stated that the u-bolt deteriorated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the vehicle experienced severe corrosion and would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 124,604.
Recall for undercarriage, according to service personal my truck did not meet criteria to be replaced so all that was done was sand off rust and repaint. So now went for inspection and it will not pass it is unsafe to drive. So this was pure negligence on your part to not fix it properly so at this time I have the backing of my mechanic to pursue this issue to see that my truck get a new undercarriage which it should had from the start.
2000 Toyota Tundra fram rusted through in 3 areas. Toyota dealership would not help with this.
I sent a letter (attached) to the Toyota dealership and to Toyota motor corporation. This is Toyota corporate's response. It is unbelievable that a major car company able to sell and service cars in the u. S. Would respond in this fashion. There is a known issue. They didn't accept the required resultant action from the corrosion recall and remedy. They simply passed by treating the frame (path of least cost and effort) and did not act in good faith now they have a callous disregard for the safety and satisfaction of their patrons. The case manager did not see the vehicle himself or view the damage or have pictures prior to his response. Below is their response: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ thank you for contacting Toyota. Below is a summary of your most recent email message received and our response. We appreciate the continued opportunity to be of service to you. Tl-the contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that while driving the vehicle spare tire separated from the tire holder due to corrosion. The vehicle was taken to the dealer whom performed an inspection which also located the fuel tank straps and the subframe corroded. However, the dealer advised that the subframe repair was no longer available. The dealer replaced the fuel tank straps and the spare tire holder. The manufacture was not contacted. The failure mileage was 113,000. Li.
Purchased 2000 Tundra in 2005. Was made aware of a recall by Toyota corp regarding rust issues with vehicle frame, gas tank strap, and spare tire fastener. I brought the vehicle to a local dealer December of 2012 for the frame inspection (tank strap and spare tire issue repaired on a separate date). I was told that a full inspection took place to include disassembling the bed of the truck. I was told that no perferations were found in the frame. A spray foam kit was used to treat the frame. On 8/25/15, I was attempting to sell my truck when a prospective buyer noticed (2) significant holes in the frame located just in front of the driver side tire. The entire frame appears to have significant rust considering it is only 15 years old. Needless to say, a sale did not take place. I was fortunate to not be driving the truck with my family when a potentially catastrophic accident could have taken place. I contacted a local dealer (not the one that treated the frame). I spoke with the service manager. He stated that he would contact Toyota corp but also stated that they may not replace the frame as it is 15 years old. He contacted me 2 days later stating that Toyota would not replace the frame or buy the vehicle back. The frame recall I referred to was not a recall according to Toyota. Rather, it was a, "good will gesture" to consumers affected by the situation. The service manager did suggest to look into finding a welder to see if they could repair it. Really?? mechanically, the vehicle is sound. I am left with scrap and out at least $4500 because I cant sell it the way it is. The important thing is that my family is still alive. What a sham. This is not right and they should be held accountable.

The failure mileage was approximately 200,000. Kh.
