The bed of my 2000 Tundra is rusting out where the cross members are welded to the bed and where the bolts are connected to the frame. Toyota replaced the frame in may of 2011. I looked online and there are other Tundra owners with the same problems. I took the truck to a local Toyota dealership as requested by Toyota recall center and the service manager, head mechanic ,and customer service manager all looked at the truck and said it was in bad shape and had to do with inferior metal, poor workmanship,or inferior under coating. Lakewood Toyota said they couldn't address the problem because there's no recall for the bed. If the bed becomes unattached from the frame then there could be a major accident. I was hoping you could notify Toyota of this problem because the company doesn't want to take responsibility for their inferior quality and poor craftsmanship want to put this on record so your dept can address the issue and or point me in the right direction to further pursue this matter. Thank you for your time and understanding. Updated 08/18/14.
Frame of vehicle has rust perforation! vehicle has no rust elsewhere, but the frame alone is rotting away in certain places. Toyota's recall only cover the spare tire area of the frame, but frame fracture would cause loss of control and lack of occupant protection.

The VIN was not available.
Vehicle was taken to dealership to do safety recall inspection on 21 may 2013. On 22 may 2013 I was notified that the vehicle has a silver dollar hole in the front cross member, and that it would not be fixed as the limited recall notice has expired six months prior. I contacted Toyota of USA for more information, they said that the frame replacement would not be done due to the notice expiring. The dealership told me that the vehicle is not safe to operate. I have told Toyota that I do not feel safe in the vehicle any more and do not feel comfortable driving the vehicle. They've promptly apologized, without offering a fix to the issue they've identified as a safety concern and a hazard to occupants inside the vehicle. I do not know how they've been allowed to have something as important as this become a time sensitive issue. Safety recalls do not expire, but a manufacturer as big as Toyota has been deemed as too big to fail.
My 2000 Toyota Tundra frame perforated the size of my fist due to rust near the rear shackle mounts on both sides this is the main load support area. I took this to wilson Toyota of ames and the technician stated that I would have qualified for the recall but it expired. I had it inspected last summer in 2012 they said it was fine. Toyota stated that they only had to do a visual inspection for perforation. Now 3 months after the expiration I have a serious safety concern. I spoke with Toyota corporate care who denied progression with a claim on a case basis stating the date ended. I stated if I tried to load my truck to the recommended gross towing capacity I would be afraid that I could buckle my frame or compromise the integrity. I believe the quote was "and" or something non concerning. I confronted the statement then he proceeded to state if your vehicle is unsafe to drive you should not drive it. I'm writing this to make aware as there was a lack of accountability in the process and procedure in and when my inspection was conducted. Though I may be one I fear this may lead or continue to go on to others as the progression of rust to perforate a frame in less than a years time frame a 3000k miles driven is a concern. I do reside in iowa where we do receive just as much winter weather as IL or mn which should have been included in the list as well. Thank you.

Tl- the contact submitted an email and requested that the official ivoq be written verbatim to the email: I am the owner of a 2000 Toyota Tundra with severe frame rot. I can not get Toyota to replace my frame because the vehicle was a rebuilt vehicle. The only thing they could do was replace the rear cross member. The problem I have with this is that my truck is excellent condition with the exception of the frame. I bought it with 50,000 miles on it and it now has 189,000 miles on it. A local man had his replaced and the truck will pass an inspection. It is frustrating I sent a letter to Toyota a year ago and to no response. So I guess my question is are they pulling the wool over my eyes and to doing the replacement or am I just screwed. Assignees and notifications* updated 05/02/12 updated 05/04/12.
I had my vehicle inspected as part of the recall campaign involving excessive rust. However, the required work to replace the fuel tank straps and crc coating was not done. Now, dealer records indicate that the truck has been serviced under the recall, and I can't have the work done. While my truck is not now in a cold climate state, it was originally sold and owned in one.
2000 Toyota Tundra frame rails that go from front to back, back to front rusted nearly in half making the vehicle unsafe to drive. The rust is not just the issue with the crossmember. Vehicle cannot be driven, it it not safe.
Heavy rust and deterioration of the under carriage frame of Tundra truck 2000.
1. My 2000 Toyota Tundra srt has serious undercarriage rust, and large pieces of metal are beginning to fall from the frame. The main beams of the frame are beginning too deteriorate, also the brake lines are corroded and brake fluid is beginning to seep through the lines. 2. Rusted pieces of metal randomly fall from vehicle, and could cause damage or seriously injure other drivers on the road. The brake lines could rupture from the severe deterioration and lead to an accident. 3. Currently I am not driving the vehicle until I get new brake lines, but there is nothing that can be done to the frame of the vehicle except recalling the truck. Toyota needs to recall the Toyota Tundra before any major accidents occur and some one is fatally injured.
(1). I purchased a new 2000 Toyota Tundra extended cab limited at price Toyota in delaware. In February 2009 I observed rust through of bracket from bed to frame visible through rear wheel well. Requested that my wife report this to liberty Toyota in NJ during routine 5000 mile oil change. She was told that this was "not a problem". (2). In September 2009 truck was again taken to liberty Toyota for 5000 mile oil change, purchase of 5 new tires and alignment. Liberty Toyota service told my wife that the truck was rusted to the point where they could no longer align the vehicle and no service was performed. Liberty took photos of the underside of the truck and transmitted them to Toyota. Approximately two weeks later liberty told my wife that Toyota's position was that because of the age and mileage (9 years and 110,000 miles ) that they would do nothing to resolve this issue. (3). In late September 2009 I purchased a 2006 Toyota Tundra crew cab 4 door Tundra limited as a replacement vehicle for my wife a Toyota runnemead, NJ. On that same occasion the 2000 Tundra was put on lift and inspected with a powerful light. Observed various rust through of brackets and at least one fist sized hole through the frame. This was witnessed by the Toyota runnemeade sales person, general manager, sales manager, and service manager. All agreed that this was worst case of rust they had seen, and were of the opinion that the truck was not safe to operate. (4). In October 2009 I contacted Toyota customer service and received a case number. A few days later I again contacted Toyota customer service and was told that "Toyota is studying the problem". This sounded like a stall tactic and gave me little hope for any voluntary positive action from Toyota. As of today 11 November 2009 I have had no further contact from Toyota. (5). I have purchased or helped purchase 5 Toyota trucks for my family. Total expenditure approximately $150,000.
Driving down road and spare tire fell off underneath the truck and rolled down the middle of the road. Took truck to Toyota dealership because a neighbor (who is a service manager) looked at it and said it was unsafe and the whole bottom was rusted out. . Toyota claimed the vehicle was safe that it was just a rusted bolt. Two weeks later the muffler was loud so we took it to a midas dealership. The mechanic called me in and stated that the issue was not the muffler the bolts and clamps had rotted out and he needed to drill holes to attach new bolts. He told me that the bolts holding the joints on the bed of the truck was unsafe and he felt that I should not drive the vehicle and definitely not on the highway. So now I have had 2 people claim the vehicle is unsafe and the Toyota dealers claims it is safe. The whole underneath is a big pile of rust. Luckily no one was injured when the tire fell of while I was doing 50 miles an hour. I was allowing my teenage son to drive this vehicle, but now it spends most of its time sitting in the driveway because we are afraid of a safety concern.
Tl the contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that the entire frame underneath the vehicle was rusted. The rust was starting to fall off onto the floor of the contact's garage. The contact was worried about continuing to drive the vehicle. Larry h. Miller Toyota murray (5650 state st, murray, ut 84107, (801) 590-0640) stated ten years ago that the failure was not part of a recall and did not repair the vehicle. The manufacturer sent the contact a letter stating there was a rust issue with the frame and advised that the vehicle should be taken to a dealer. The failure mileage was 90,000.
The bed of my truck has roughly 8-10 rust holes that all formed on top of the cross member supports. One hole formed over the bed bolt which has now rendered this bolt useless in holding down the bed. All rust came from under the bed and eventually made its way through. There seems to be a serious factory defect in the seem sealer that they used around the cross members. The sealer broke down which allowed moisture and salt to enter and ruin my bed. Also the frame of my truck has a significant amount of rust for its age and condition. It is occurring around the rear shackles most weld seems and other areas. I have done my best to neutralize the rust with proper prep and paint but it only buys time for the inevitable. Toyota has had a problem with their tacoma trucks rusting through and I feel that they have the same problem with the Tundra trucks. The rust problems my truck faces will eventually make my truck inoperable. It may cause a great threat to the safety of myself and other motorists if there is a rust failure on my 2000 Toyota Tundra.
2000 Toyota Tundra pickup truck. Had the truck inspected in April of 2009 and found that the steel frame underneath the truck is rotting out the mechanic that we use said the frame may last another year.
Very concerned about the rust under my 2000 Toyota Tundra. It was inspected for the initial bed rust in Jan 08 by my local dealer after a local reputable body shop agreed with me that things were not right underneath. Dealer rep dismissed my concerns and did nothing. Now I'm reading about these things falling apart. The below incident date is the date of the inspection. I intend to have another inspection by the dealer I purchased the truck from in the near future.
I own a 2000 Toyota Tundra and a few years ago it began to shed its paint. It spots up like it is corroded with a chemical then begins to peel off. By this point the whole truck has either peeled off or is spotted. The running boards are also corroded and rusting with holes all over them. I contacted Toyota and a rep looked at the truck and preceded to accuse me of exposing my truck to a chemical and saying he had never seen this happen before. They refused to make it right. I know of another lady with the same year truck and color of mine who has experienced the same problem. I did not buy my truck new, but it was only 5 or 6 yrs. Old when this problem began to occur. I am thinking that I cannot be the only one out here who is experiencing this. Thank you for all the help you can offer.
A television bumped the left rear tire well(in bed of truck), putting a dent in it and causing it to split the area of the truck. The split was about 9 inches long. Driver was making a right turn, traveling about 7 mph when the incident happened.
