Automatic Emergency Braking Problems of Toyota Tundra

While driving approximately 10–15 mph approaching a green light, a truck in front of me suddenly slammed on its brakes. As soon as I saw the brake lights I immediately applied my brakes before any system alert activated. I stopped within approximately 3–5 feet of the vehicle in front of me. At the same time, a truck behind me was approaching quickly. To avoid being rear-ended I pressed the accelerator to move out of the way. However my vehicle would not respond. Despite pressing the gas pedal the truck remained in a braking or non-responsive state and would not accelerate. I attempted to switch between the brake and gas pedal but the vehicle still would not move. This condition lasted approximately 30–60 seconds leaving me stopped in active traffic and unable to take evasive action. This created a serious safety hazard as I was at high risk of being rear-ended due to the vehicle’s failure to respond to acceleration input. The delay was critical and could have resulted in a collision. There were no warning lights or messages prior to or during the incident. The issue occurred suddenly without any indication. This appears to be related to the pre-collision system (pcs) and/or the vehicle’s throttle/acceleration system. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The issue has not yet been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or service center and the vehicle has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer or other parties but I did call yesterday and haven’t received a response so I will be taking it to gulf coast Toyota today [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. The anti-collision system / automatic braking system engages, even when turned off. This is a major safety hazard and nearly got me into an accident. With the acs disengaged, poking the front end of the vehicle out into oncoming traffic while trying to merge, the vehicle locks up completely, disabling the vehicle, rendering it a sitting duck in oncoming traffic.

The truck “detected” a warning collision when there was no one in front of me which made the engine lag. There for causing me to come to an abrupt stop from 40 mph. I stepped on the gas to get back up to speed with traffic beside and behind me and there was no power almost causing an accident. This is the 3rd time this truck has done this in 6 months.

While driving forward at approximately 20mph, the automatic emergency brake system activated, causing the vehicle to come to a stop. There were no vehicles or other object in front of the vehicle that should have caused the automatic brake system to activate. This has been an ongoing problem with this vehicle. The system cannot be turned off or disabled by the driver. This system engaging on its own creates a major safety hazard, as vehicles behind have to stop to avoid hitting my stopped vehicle.

I was at a tea intersection and I needed to pull into traffic. This is the second time it’s happened by the way. And the traffic was pretty heavy, but if I really put on the grass, I’d be able to get into my lane no problem and as I was going to get into the lane and merge in the traffic, the gas shut off the brake warning went on because cars were coming at me to my left. I believe it’s the Toyota safety sense that stopped the gas into my car. The throttle was nonresponsive for a second or so, and it almost caused an accident the dealership has been made aware and the shop foreman says it’s a problem with Toyota safety sense and they told me they documented it when I brought my car in.

I have taken my vehicle in more than 3 times, regarding braking issues, the vehicle would brake automatically even when there is nothing in front of it, the pre collision sensor comes on in rain when there is no debris in front of it. Vwhicle was having throttle lag when come to a complete stop at a light. Now the panoramic roof is leaking, took it to the dealer more than 3 rimes for some these issues, regarding the roof leak, they said they were unable to duplicate it, I have videos showing it was leaking & pictures of all the malfunction from the dashboard.

I have so many problems with my truck and the surging engine as well as squealing brakes, lane assist is disabled but comes on and jerks the truck out of my lane and it's impossible to steer almost causing me to crash numeroys times. Every time I try to get the engine replaced which I've been waiting over a year and I was in phase 2 and every Toyota dealership tells me something different. I can't even sell this truck privately because it needs a new engine. I have 25,300 miles as of today and I've had it in the shop so many times and they say they can't find anything wrong with it. The headliner fell down onto my head and took it in for service and I got it back worse because they broke all the clips that hold the interior headliner in place and it's hanging down. Every time I bring it in for something they tell me the parts are not available but what they're doing is trying to make me run out of my warranty which is in 2 months. They're trying to sell me an extended warranty but they can't even fix anything that's under warranty right now. I really need your help here because there's so many other issues that I haven't even gone over. Everything is misaligned on this truck and they can't fix it my rear passenger door never latched correctly and they don't know what to do they just give it back to me the same way and I have small children that sit back there but they claim they don't know how to fix it.

Lta feature engaged out of nowhere and my dashboard lit up with red, green and yellow warnings all at once and made my truck swerve back and forth and prevented me from having any control and steered me directly into oncoming traffic almost causing me to have a head on collision. Also the brakes automatically come on out of nowhere for no reason and has almost given me whiplash. I just had major neck surgery with plates and screws put in my cervical spine and if this keeps happening I'm going to need another surgery.

Vehicle failed to accelerate after I attempted to merge onto 3 lane road from a driveway. No chimes, warning or emergency braking occurred but the vehicle had no response for a second or two. I captured the incident on my dash cam. . Read more...

There are many incidents, issues, and critical safety problems with my vehicle. I have had multiple repair attempts, with multiple Toyota car dealerships, and have continued to have the same amount of problems, and issues with this vehicle. Multiple leaks of fuel, smells of gas and burning, odometer reads brakes failing, and danger lights, transmission shifting issues, engine knocking while driving and at a complete stop, brake issues, by the grace of god my family and I have not been in an accident yet. I have taken my car in for repairs multiple times and to this day my vehicle is still being repaired at the dealership as we speak. My vehicle has cumulatively been at the dealership for almost 3 months. My family and I are under an assortment of insurmountable mental, and physical stress with the level of unsafe, unfit, and unreliable attempts to not only trust this vehicle to operate safely, but trust the service technicians to safely, and correctly diagnose the many unsafe issues with this vehicle. I have made several attempts in filing cases, complaints, and attempts of contact, to resolve these multiple issues with the manufacturer, and have had no such luck. Please, for the safety and daily life continuity of my family. Please help me resolve these issues with the manufacturer. My family, and I do not feel safe and do not feel like our issues are being acknowledged or resolved. Truck hesitates when acceleration from a dead stop, brakes has squealed since new 1) when pulling out in traffic, truck randomly hesitates and then jerks to go, very concerning and unknown if I will pull into traffic and the truck wont go 2) brakes have squealed since it had 3k miles, very concerning that they will not stop the truck in an emergency.

This is the second chrome hood bulge that I've put on it and it keep breaking with the wind and just flys off. Also the collision light will come on by itself.

This vehicle is dangerous. There are many more, complaint level issues, but there are at least three real safety issues. First, the automatic braking system has engaged multiple times for no reason. Traveling down a straight, flat road in good weather, the brakes suddenly went fully engaged. On one occasion my dog was thrown forcefully into the dash and was injured and then afraid to ride in the truck. It makes me afraid of the truck as well and could have easily caused an accident. Second, there is the known fuel line issue. This could, according to the manufacturer, be a fire risk. However, there's no remedy. So I'm driving around this truck that could catch fire, that likes to slam on the brakes for no reason. Third, there's something wrong with the windshields in these trucks. Mine recently was broken while the vehicle was parked. It just cracked. Just driving it home made the crack quadruple in size. It's unsafe to drive as is. I contacted Toyota and they aren't interested in considering that there's something wrong with the windshields, yet they can't replace it, because they're back ordered due to so many being broken. So I have a truck that slams on the brakes unpredictably, that might catch fire, that the windshield broke for no reason but can't be replaced. I've spoken several times with Toyota corporate about this and they have no answers and keep referring to the dealer who tells me there are no answers and to call Toyota. It's a classic runaround while my $70,000 truck is unsafe to drive. It's absolutely unsafe and the NHTSA needs to act to protect consumers from these vehicles.

When proceeding ahead from a stop with no one in front of me, after traveling ahead at a normal pace, the emergency braking system activated and the truck came to an abrupt stop. This occurred after traveling about 5 feet and luckily the person behind me did not rear end me. After this panic stop the truck then proceeded ahead as normal. This is the first time this has happened to me since purchased new. Currently has 3870 miles.

Twice it has felt like I was being rear ended. Something is making a slamming motion on the truck when it is stopped. First time was at a stop light, second time was backing up but stopped to put the truck in "drive". I have tried looking up to see if this truck was affected in a 2022 recall but the information is unavailable.

While driving off from a red light, we experienced a severe jolt from when the emergency braking system engaged on its own. There was no vehicle in front us at the time of the incident. The sudden stop was so severe, I thought we had gotten rear ended. This is the second time this incident has happened to us in this vehicle. The first time my wife and 3 small children were accelerating from a stop sign. The truck came to a violent sudden stop. My wife was terrified. We took the vehicle to the dealership. They could not tell us what had happened. They reset the computer and told us it would not happen again. This last incident happen on 6/13/2023. The 2022 Tundra limited edition has 8,508. Miles. I bought a new vehicle to make sure my family would feel safe. We are terrified of driving this truck, because it may cause us to get into an accident.

While pulling forward, at a green light, the autonomous braking system activated as the vehicle in front of me was moving away. The automatic braking system should not have activated at this time. This the third time this has happened with this vehicle.

While moving in traffic, the automatic emergency brake system activated as traffic was moving away from the vehicle. There was no reason this system should have activated at this particular time. This is the second time this has occurred in this vehicle.

Automatic breaking systems - I have had several problems with the breaking systems in this truck going off without anything around my truck. I had an injury due to the brake coming on without warning. I will upload reports turned into Toyota. They have had recalls on this that they stated they fixed. With in a week the truck was back to auto braking in parking lots and on the road with no vehicles or obstructions around. Throttle sticking on truck - also a recall and stated it was fixed but recall did not fix issue. The throttle will stick and keep revving even after letting of the gas. The vehicle during stop and go also sticks and causes throttle to jam. Items freezing on the led screens - also a recall stated fixed by dealership. Recall did not fix problems with this truck. Sensors on vehicle going off even when just cold or wet - also a recall and it did not fix the problems. The recall work was done on Feb 14, 2023 and my vehcile was back in the shop Mar 13, 2023 and is still at the dealership as of today Mar 22,2023. I have had 20 or more incidents with the auto braking going off, in intersections, on the freeway, in parking lots, with a trailer attached the throttle sticking at all times even after recalls this vehicle will kill someone with all of these issues going on.

2019 Tundra: for no reason or indication the vehicle displayed a “trailer break error” and “pre-collision system malfunction” warning asking me to pull over if towing anything (nothing was being towed) and to contact the dealership. Vehicle still operational however the menus can’t be seen as the warning is consistent.

This message keeps popping up randomly (parking support malfunction see your dealer) the infotainment keeps restarting its self randomly both of these have happened more than 20times in the last 2weeks took it to the dealership they said there’s nothing they can do if they can’t duplicate the problem my truck has 20,514 miles all recalls have been done I drive a lot so the 16,000 before my standard 36 month warranty will be up soon the truck was looked at on 01/25/2023 I have video of the radio but can’t upload it.

Was struck in front right corner of truck and air bags did not deploy or the automatic braking system did not respond causing me to be thrown in to rearview mirror and breaking the windshiled and causing body harm to my head and spine.

I was at a complete stop at a traffic light. When the light turned green, the one car in front made the turn and was a few car lengths ahead before I pressed the accelerator pedal. When I reached a speed of approx. 10+ mph and before I cleared the intersection, the automatic brakes engaged, warning flashed on the display, and engine was no longer idling. I placed truck in park, press ignition control button, then placed in drive and continued on my route. This is concerning because when the emergency brakes activate when you are not expecting it, it jerks your body and neck and the vehicle behind you could rear end you. This incident occurred on 8/22/22. I brought my vehicle in to the dealership on 8/31/22 due to the other existing recalls. I told them about this incident and they recorded it on my file. They looked at the engine data and said nothing was recorded regarding my occurrence. They stated that sometime the sensors act up and think a vehicle is in front of you when in fact there is not.

Automatic braking engaged with no vehicle or objects in front. I was starting to move after sitting at a red light, at approximately 20 mph the vehicle engaged the automatic emergency brakes bringing the vehicle to a stop in traffic. I had to depress the brake pedal hard in order to deactivate the automatic braking system.

I have been involved in two rear end accidents that I pressed the brake down with no response and ended up in a minor accident going less than 10 miles per hour each time. Also my running lights stop working and have had 4 wheel drive get stuck in that position until I had to look at the book to free it but no longer use it.

I could only select a certain amount of descriptions. 2021 tacoma had issues of a vibration in the left front or right front wheel/suspension and I have the same feeling in the 2022 Tundra, (2) airflow shutters code with engine light came on, (apparently they fixed it or reset the system) (3) brakes starting to squeak at 9k/10k miles (4) transmission slipping at 9k/10k miles (5) inop reverse camera and screen goes blank or white out for good period of time (6) heat from outside temperature throws codes for collision/brake codes light come on possibly turning them off (7) automatic emergency braking sensors or radar tech brakes hard at stoplights when a car is in front of me when green light is on to go, is too sensitive and it slams on the brakes jerking my neck/head forward and other passengers in vehicle not including the people behind me, slamming on their brakes.

Intermit message "trailer disconnect " message causing the trailer braking system to fail when attached to truck. Truck brakes are used to stop trailer at unsafe distances. Several trailers were used to verify. I have attached the fix but Toyota says its warranty issue. This is a "safety" issue. I had my 3 year old son in the truck when I had to apply the brakes and couldn't stop in enough time. The truck brakes could not handle the weight of the trailer hence why the trailer brakes were needed. Please prevent a death.
