Started hearing clunking noise in truck. Made appointment with ase certified mechanic and he asked us to come back to the shop. The structure of the frame that holds the rack and pinion steering and anti-sway bar mount was gone. Both of the tops of the frame of the cross member that goes under the engine was missing. The frame rail under the cab is separating. He advised that this condition was a massive safety issue and that I should contact Toyota and advise them. I called a dealership in zanesville and they advised they could not help because it was not a recall and Toyota gave me a case number and transferred me to someone else who told me they could not help me. He also got a second opinion from another individual who also said that this is a safety issue that should be addressed by the manufacturer. I have more photos and I now know I can not drive a truck that I spent $24,000 on June of 2019. I am glad I did not wreck my vehicle and hurt my family or anyone else because of this issue. Please help me repair my truck. When we purchased the vehicle the factory undercoating was still in tact and this was not visible underneath.

I was finished doing my oil change and noticed my rack and pinion boot had an oil leak on the passenger side, I wiped it off and it seems like a small leak for now. The truck on has 73. 2k miles on it and it's completely stock, no modifications at all. It's a daily driver and is strictly street driven, no off roading. The rack and pinion shouldn't leak at all with this low mileage and being stock.

Rack and pinion failed, making it very difficult to steer while I was driving. Fortunately I was in a residential neighborhood and was driving slow.
Entire frame has severe rust despite anti-rust/corrosion inhibitor applied in 2010-2012. Small holes are now present in frame and the vehicle only has 108k miles. Recently, the power steering rack and pinion had to be replaced, as it rusted out. The technician noticed rust on other suspension components, indicating that rust had made the system weak and brittle. Copious amounts of corrosion inhibitor has now made it almost impossible to obtain a correct alignment. The rusted frame will soon, if not already, diminish the vehicle's safety. Toyota instituted a frame recall circa 2010 for just this issue. Somehow this VIN was omitted. The corrosion inhibitor has proved ineffective. I am requesting that NHTSA demand Toyota institute another recall for the excluded vins. These omitted Tundras, in their current poor frame condition, present a hazard to drivers and other motorists and must be repaired.

Driving my 68000 mile 4 year old Tundra on back road about 45 mph and steering locked up, and started shuttering. Was able to slam on brakes and get off the road only to find power steering rack and pinion was blown out and fluid everywhere . This is no a issue of wear its an issue of defect parts in these Tundras , there are many many others online with the same issue . This needs to be address before someone gets severely injured from this. Waiting on pictures from the dealer and can send them to you. Toyota claims steering rack went bad due to dust boot being ripped and outside debris causing seal failure, but while attempting to figure out what was wrong with vehicle while on side of road my arm ripped the dust boot so the dust boot was never ripped until after vehicles was pulled over and already broken .

High pitch sound when I go to turn the steering wheel. Power steering fluid reservoir empty. Took to dealership and they said the rack and pinion is no good and has to be replaced at a cost of $1900. 00. The issue I have is, I have a CO-worker who bought the same truck I did, in the same month I did. His has 145,000 miles and his rack and pinion went out two weeks ago. Less than 10,000 miles between these incidents is quite a coincidence.
While driving my power steering began to fail. After inspection a power steering leak was discovered on the drivers side rack and pinion under the boot.
While starting from a stop, either in drive or reverse, I heard a squealing sound when turning the wheels to the left. I am also losing power steering fluid, and my right side rack & pinion boot appears to be filling with fluid. It appears that my power rack & pinion system is failing, and the vehicle has only 55,000 miles on it with no hard use (just transport, mostly local. ) I am worried that my steering system may fail while driving. Note: I am scheduling an inspection of the steering issue with a local Toyota dealership.

Vehicle inspected by dealer leak in rack and pinion. Very early at 72,500 miles. Loose lower ball joints. Lower ball joints replaced under recall 10/11/2005 at 28,000 miles. If they are going bad again at 72,500 miles, there is a major problem.

Took to the shop "meinke" and was listed as; replace the leaking power steering rack and pinion gear - $975. 00.
The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tundra. The contact noticed both front tires were wearing prematurely. The contact took the vehicle to a local mechanic where a diagnostic was performed and the mechanic informed the contact that the entire rack and pinion system needed to be replaced due to defective bushings. The contact did not have the rack and pinion replaced. The failure mileage was 61,393.

2002 Toyota Tundra rack and pinion replacement.
Looking at the complaints, this looks similar to odi id number : 10222095 date of failure: March 21, 2008. I was at a dead stop. I turned my steering to the left as possible. As I was rounding the turn slowly, the power steering was lost. I was unable to make the u-turn completely. I had to run off of the road. After driving straight to repair shop, the mechanic said the rack and pinion had to be replaced because the rods were bent to what looked like could have been service work related to the ball joint recall. I've only got 19800 miles on a 2006 Tundra crew cab. No way this should occur with this few many miles. I'm just glad I wasn't at a high rate of speed and trying to round a curve. I don't drive it much and not used on a farm. It's been very well cared for so it shouldn't have caused that much strain on the rack.
There is a steering problem on my 2008 Toyota Tundra sr5 double cab. When driving on a normally crowned( or sloped) road surface, the truck will pull to the right on the right lane, or to the left on the left lane. The local dealer has made multiple adjustments to the front end alignment, has rotated tires, even
swapped tires from another truck. The pulling problem persists. Toyota district parts & service manager insists that my truck "is operating normally". I have taken the truck to 2 local independent alignment shops run by long-time experienced mechanics. They both felt that there was a problem with the rack-and-pinion steering unit. I have tried repeatedly to get Toyota to replace the rack-and pinion, they have refused.

Well at 48,000 my master cylinder stopped working. Sept of 08 the rack and pinion steering rotted away and I also noticed my frame rotting back in 05. . And now I can peel metal of my frame. I just put 1800 dollars into a dyeing horse. . . I bought Toyota for a reason. They built some trucks on frames knowing they were no good in new england weather. . . . Please help . . .
The contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tundra. While approaching a stop at less than 5 mph, the contact lost control of the steering. He managed to pull the vehicle over and had it towed to the dealer. The dealer stated that the rack and pinion separated from the frame and was unable to be repaired because the frame was rusted. The contact believes that the frame should not be rusted out because the vehicle is only eight years old. The VIN and engine size were unknown. The current and failure mileages were 135,000.
The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tundra. Whenever the contact drove the vehicle at highway speeds the vehicle began to sway from the left and right unless the vehicle speed was reduced. The vehicle was taken to the dealership where the contact had the rack & pinion replaced 4 additional times prior to the recent failure. The contact noticed that prior to the failure, the steering wheel would not return to the normal position after making a left turn. The current and failure mileages were 35,000.
The front end steering rack let go, then the ball joints let go and the whole front end fell out causing 4,500. 00 in damage as well as injury to my back.
Rack and pinion steering failure, causing front tires to wear excessively. Front brakes would grab/vibrate when vehicle got hot, and brakes were applied. Vehicle been in dealer shop on several occasions, and informed consumer that nothing was wrong. Vehicle taken to an independent repair shop, and it informed consumer of rack and pinion steering problem. Please feel free to provide any further details on this matter.
