36 Wheel problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/16/2019

Bought truck new in 8/2001. Brought truck to dealer when it was recalled for rust in 2012 and was told rust wasn't bad enough to do anything. Brought truck back to dealer multiple times after 2012 (last in 11/18) and was told everything was fine on each occasion. In 8/2019 I heard a squeak from undercarriage and when I looked, the spare tire crossmember was hanging down and the right side upper shock mount was completely rusted through and the top of the shock was rubbing against the bottom of the truck bed (top shock mount was completely rusted away). Local service center told me to remove the shock and spare tire for safety. This rust is limited to the upper shock mount and the crossmember holding the spare tire. Other crossmembers and frame rails are all stable with only the amount of surface rust expected on a 18 year old vehicle. I do not believe that the dealer did a thorough exam of the truck in 2012, 2018 or other visits I made when I prompted them to check the rust as it related to the recall. I was told that since the campaign for rust was over they couldn't do anything. Based on the fact of only 2-3 areas of catastrophic rust on the frame and components while the rest of the frame and chassis is wearing appropriately I believe that this is a safety issue that should be re-instated - obvious factory defect - no corrosion inhibited applied. The vehicle is still mechanically perfect but the falling spare tire and broken suspension can cause an accident or injury that could be prevented with a recall. I believe that the Toyota dealer did not do a thorough inspection. I also question why I have seen multiple instances of individuals with similar problems who were given anti-corrosion treatment or other efforts made to stop the rust from getting worse - but nothing was done by Toyota to mitigate this problem before it got to this catastrophic level.

38 Wheel problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/22/2019

Front lower ball joint recall or lack thereof. There is a current recall for Toyota Tundras year 2002-2004 but does not include 2000-2001 that have lower ball joints of the same design. Mine failed and so have several others around the country. Many customers have reported that their respective dealerships will not cover the repairs due to a manufacturer failed lower ball joint. I have attached a photo of the result of what a failed ball joint looks like and when you combine that image with the hypothetical of traveling 65-70 mph the damage can then escalate to catastrophic or even death. Not only for passengers but for others traveling the same road. When the ball joint failed I was luckily traveling 25-30 mph to get on to the freeway, but it failed before I was at full highway speed. I spoke to the Toyota dealership here and they claim that the manufacturer did not include 2000-2001 year Tundra's, which is conclusive of the research I did previously. I also checked on the design of the ball joints and the design is identical between 2000-2002. Yet the dealer refuses to cover the cost of repair to the damage that has been caused by the faulty lower ball joint.

39 Wheel problem of the 2016 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/17/2019

At only 77,000 miles the axle bearings have failed. This is unbelievable since sealed bearings are supposed to last the lifetime of the vehicle. The Toyota dealership parts manager says these bearings fail frequently on the Tundras.

40 Wheel problem of the 2016 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/12/2018

Rear wheel bearings failed (but still functional) at 17000 miles. Wheels still rotate but there is a very loud droning noise at highway speeds with a slight squeal at lower speeds. Non-Toyota mechanics have expressed concerns about driving the vehicle as bearings can fail altogether and seize the wheels.

41 Wheel problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/09/2018

While driving, I had my spare tire fail off the car due to Tundra spare tire lift plate rot. I was unaware of this condition and could have resulted in a serious accident.

42 Wheel problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/06/2018

My tires were rotated by discount tires (3836 plaza dr. , ocnsd, CA). They did not tighten all the lugs on my right driver side tire and it flew off when I was driving and badly damaged my car. They are denying all responsibility and assume that the lugs are either tightened fully or not at all. I located all the lugs and only one sheared off the stuff. Also the safety stud was not tightened. Please investigate them to make sure they train they employees for proper and safe tire rotation. Also please let me know any other agency that oversees tire rotation businesses. Thank you.

43 Wheel problem of the 2012 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/20/2018

During inclement weather, the steel wheels retain water because of their design. As a result, there is corrosion/rust within the wheesl and at the base of the valve stems. This defect is now allowing air to leak from the bases of the valve stems. According to boch Toyota as well as Toyota customer service, this is a rare problem. Town fair tire and the internet indicate this is a common problem.

45 Wheel problem of the 2017 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/04/2017

The spare tire detached from its mount under the vehicle while we were driving at highway speed on I-76 in ne colorado. The tire fell to the pavement and was struck by the travel trailer we were towing, blowing out a trailer tire and damaging the trailer. The spare tire was struck a few minutes later by another vehicle, causing failure to 2 tires on their vehicle and near loss of vehicle control. The people in the second vehicle confirmed it was our spare tire. At the time of this incident, our Toyota Tundra was 10 months old, purchased in January 2017. The spare tire had never been used nor had it been lowered or removed from its factory-installed mounting device. It was fitted with a dealer-installed spare tire lock. The truck has not been in an accident or damaged in any way and has been maintained by the dealership where it was purchased. We have a dash-cam file of the incident but it only shows that nothing else was in the highway as the incident occurred. The rearview camera only shows the travel trailer rocking as it went over the spare tire.

46 Wheel problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/15/2017

As I was driving on the interstate(I-10) last week all of a sudden my truck began moving to the right then to the left. It went back and forth about 4 times. While it was doing this, I had no control of the truck. Good thing no cars were around me because I would have hit them.

48 Wheel problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/01/2017

I purchased 4 new tires from bf goodrich dealer in minnesota on12/9/2015 they mounted and balanced and installed the tires. Then on 9/01/2017 I had a rear passenger tire explode and come apart at highway speed. I brought the damaged tire back to the dealership which installed them and contacted the manufacture only to find out that the tires the dealer sold me as new tires had a manufactures date of 09/2000 that meant that the tires where over 15 years old that they sold me as new tires and I believe that is ultimately the issue of the tire exploding causing a very serious situation and I was wondering what type of action as a consumer I can take to rectify this situation. Thanks and have a great day.

57 Wheel problem of the 2011 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/25/2016

The Tundra is a 2011 and the rear driver side wheel has been the issue. I was on a city street about 2am when a loud crash and thundering made driving very hard. The rear wheel had sheared off and was passing me by as I slowed down sparks flying like the fourth of July!! I had been going 25 miles an hour in a residential setting. I had the truck towed to the dealer whom agreed this was an obscure occurrence, to which they warrantied and fixed it. This occurred at 250,000 miles so that seemed like a satisfactory ending! however, at 3500 miles later going 70mph down interstate 20 at 4 am a horrendous crash ( noise) and almost flipping the same tire sheared again passing me by!! I was lucky that I didnt flip! Toyotas explantion. . . They couldnt/wouldnt provide me one but did fix my problem as the friction sanded down into the rotor and shock absorber hanger!! not sure if other folks have had this experience?? I did encouter another fellow (my son) whom had the same experience at 250,000 miles on the driver side rear with a Toyota Tundra 2012 he owned. This is very dangerous and needs to be addressed as to what the root cause is!! I felt like Toyota took care of me repair wise but never got a straight answer from them on the cause!! I would appreciate your agency and its resources looking into what is causing this dangerous condtion.

58 Wheel problem of the 2013 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/01/2016

Took truck in at 14,000 miles with a distinct vibration to dealer where truck was leased. Truck was returned with tires rotated and tires rebalanced. This problem resurfaced again at 24,000 miles and truck again was taken back to dealer. I was notified by dealers rep. That I needed to buy 4 new tires to which I told dealer rep that this truck was a leased vehicle which I did not own and it was up to dealer to fix truck. I also got in tuch with the maker of the tire which was michilin tire who stated to me that the tire in question size p255/70r 18 had a 5 year 50,000 mile warrenty. Michilin asked me for the number to the dealer and said that they would get in touch with dealer to try to see what the problem was and work with dealer to fix the situation. I got in touch with dealer on the next business day and the service manager said that he had consulted michilin and Toyota and they had worked it out but also requested from me to give the truck a wheel alignment, which I agreed to. Wheni went to the dealer later that afternoon to pick up the truck I paid for the alignment on truck and talked with the service manager who eluded to me that he was telling me somthing that Toyota did not want the custerer to know and that was that Toyota was having truble with these trucks and that they were to heavy in the front end for the tires to sustain the weight but that my truck was ready and I assumed that 4 new tires had been put on the truck so I picked it up and drove opff. Now appoximately 3 weeks ago as I had just reached 34,000 miles on the vehicle the vibration started up again and again I consulted michilin and they asked me to go to an autherized michilin dealer to inspect the tire and truck suspension system. This was done and to my surprise I found out that the Toyota dealee had not replaced all 4 tires as indicated at 14,000 milles but only put on 2 tires.

Due to rust, O2 sensors are bad, exuast system bad, left rear tire ball joint defective, emergency brakes defective, body frame has holes at left side, majority of frame is rusting. Per mechanics all this is stemming from the rust. Truck has low mileage, frame is crumbling in some places and is a danger to drive safely. Just went through inspection. Truck needs its 3rd set of tires at 50k miles - always wear on outside most severely but across as well - bridgestone duelers (on new truck from dealer) - replaced by firestone set that wore the same - rotated, balanced and alignment checked on-schedule and no alignment problems noted - by 10k tires look like they need changed.

62 Wheel problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/30/2015

I was driving down a somewhat busy 2-lane road last week, going approximately 40mph on my way to work in the morning. I heard and felt a loud thud, and looked in my rearview mirror and saw a tire in the road behind me and the cars behind me were swerving to avoid it. I thought I might have driven over the tire, and wondered how I didn't notice it in the road. When I came to the stoplight at the next intersection a little ways down the road, the car that had been driving directly behind me pulled up beside me, and the driver told me it was my spare tire that had fallen down from the bottom of my truck that was now sitting in the road back there. Luckily, no one had been injured, and all the cars had been able to avoid hitting it. After retrieving my tire from the middle of the road, I noticed the metal part of the spare tire hoist that holds the tire to the lift cable sitting a few feet away in the road. That metal piece was covered in rust, and the middle part of it was completely gone, having given way when the tire fell off. I did a quick search online, and there are countless reports of other Tundra and tacoma owners experiencing the same problem. My Tundra used to be operated in the northeast by a previous owner, and was part of the frame recall earlier this year for higher than normal rust corrosion on the frame. It warranted a complete frame replacement that was completed in July 2015. Not sure why this part was not included in that replacement, since it was certainly corroded as well! thankfully, no one driving behind me when the tire fell off had been injured by hitting the tire, but imagine if one of those drivers had not been fully awake that morning!.

63 Wheel problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/11/2015

Vehicle driven: 2000 Toyota Tundra: on July 11, 2015 I was traveling at about 70 mph in the far left lane when the front driver side tire and wheel broke off the vehicle. The front side of the truck impacted the pavement, and the truck began swerving. I tried to stop the truck, but the brakes were not functioning. Consequently, I then had to use my strength to steer the truck to the shoulder and wait for the truck to lose momentum since the brakes were not functioning. I managed to steer the truck to the shoulder after about a mile of trying to control the vehicle and waiting for it to slow down. I suspect that the lower ball joint on this vehicle are defective and led to the accident. Newer models of this vehicle have been investigated by NHTSA for issues regarding the lower ball joints.

64 Wheel problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/10/2015

Took the truck in for recall inspection of rear as per recall notice #bxd ssc. Was told by sunnyside Toyota that the rear part was fine but the other part of frame is badly corroded. They/and the Toyota manufacturer said that this portion of frame is not covered under recall. Estimate of repair cost $15,000. Remarks on vehicle inspection report: 99 front section of frame has a large hole that we feel is getting to the point of being dangerous/not part of bxd campaign.

65 Wheel problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/19/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2007 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated while starting up the vehicle, the contact notice the tire warning light illuminates. The vehicle was taken to dealership several times where it was diagnosed that the tpms receiver needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 84,591. Ng.

66 Wheel problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/12/2015

I was driving down the street and the spare tire fell off. It actually caused the truck to bounce up slightly. Luckily the tire did not contact any other vehicles. Thing to note: my truck was part of the frame corrosion recall issued by Toyota. At the time, they did not replace the frame but only covered the rust with some coating. That did not stop nor slow the rust. The "band aid" they used was insufficient at solving the problem, it only covered it temporarily.

67 Wheel problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/02/2015

I left my driveway to do some errands and when I returned I thought someone had thrown an old tire on my property. To my dismay I quickly realized it was my spare tire with the rotted hoist still frozen to the inside of the rim. I had already taken my truck to a dealer for under carriage rotting recall. Thank god this didn't happen at any other time, it could have killed people. I do a lot of highway driving.

68 Wheel problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/22/2015

Truck started making a very loud roaring noise at speed 50 mph and over. The right wheel bearing and hub assembly needed replacement. Toyota has a technical service bulletin on both wheel bearings and there should be a recall for this problem. Vehicle had less then 30,000 miles on it.

69 Wheel problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/12/2015

I was leaving a parking lot when the right front ball joint failed. The wheel fell off, the suspension dropped down. I put the vehicle in park, turned off the engine and called for a tow truck.

70 Wheel problem of the 2014 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/09/2015

When backing out of gas station, passenger side tire fell off completely from rotor. On the rotor chrome like pieces of lug nut retained on. Remaining lug-nuts where inside tire well. When taking the vehicle back to original purchase dealership they did not claim no knowledge of the recall on lugnuts with our truck. Dealership refuses to pay for cost associated with defected item and refusing to fix or address.
