1 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2008 Toyota Yaris

Failure Date: 05/01/2019

Bought car with 99k miles. Noted a clunk in suspension. Decided to fix by process of elimination. Turned out it was a broken bolt that holds the control arm inside the subframe which is not accessible from the exterior. Steering was very off and this was a very dangerous issue that is clearly a defect from the manufacturer: the front subframe was poorly designed and the inner bolt that holds the long horizontal control arm bolt was improperly welded or the inner sub frame was made so water could get in and rust said bold/weld.

2 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2007 Toyota Yaris

Failure Date: 09/22/2016

Broken bolt for control arm of suspension. Passenger side bolt head broken off, causing knocking during bumps/acceleration/breaking. Recommendation to replace bolt & control arm for suspension on both sides to mitigate issue. Research on this issue has shown that this is not uncommon for the Toyota Yaris control arm bolts. This is a serious hazard should the bolt break during use.

3 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2007 Toyota Yaris

Failure Date: 03/17/2016

Clunking noise heard during vehicle operation over roadway bumps or application of brakes. Inspected to find front lower control arm bolt corroded and cracked. This bolt is located at the rear of this control arm and passes through the subframe. Bolt head and portion of shank was missing due to corrosion and fatigue failure. Lower control arm was loose, posing an unsafe operation condition. Toyota has an existing TSB on this issue. I brought my vehicle to a certified mechanic and paid repair costs out of pocket. Subframe removed, portion of bolt extracted and replaced. This issue needs to be re-evaluated for a recall possibility.

4 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2008 Toyota Yaris

Failure Date: 12/01/2015

Broken bolt on lower control arm / only 90000 miles driven to work only / not abused.

5 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2009 Toyota Yaris

Failure Date: 05/22/2015

I have recently noticed some strange clunking, popping and squealing noises coming from my car. After having my mechanic look at it I have been informed that the passenger side lower control arm rear bolt was broken and part of it remains but is no longer connected to the control arm. My passenger side front wheel was moving in and out approximately 2inches. In my research I have found no recall notice for this issue and feel it is a large safety issue.

6 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2008 Toyota Yaris

Failure Date: 03/03/2014

The car started making a clucking sound on the pass side when the brake was applied . I inspected the vehicle and found the front r/s lower control arm vertical bolt had rotted out and snapped off. I went to Toyota and purchased two new updated bolts ( Toyota has a bulletin out for this defect ) I drilled out the old bolt and tried to remove it with an easy out ( I had already soaked the top of the bolt the day before with penetration oil ) the welded bolt in the sub frame broke off . I made a temp repair with washer and replaced the new bolt . I have checked out this issue and found out that there are a lot of Yaris owners out there with the same problem . I contacted Toyota c/s and ask them if they had a fix plate that I could buy to fix this proble correctly I also told them that some thing should be done before someone gets injured !.

7 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2008 Toyota Yaris

Failure Date: 11/21/2012

Heard a banging sound from the front passenger side, came to find one of 3 control arm bolts had rusted out. The dealership replaced both sides for preventative measures.

8 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2008 Toyota Yaris

Failure Date: 08/20/2012

My 4 year old 2008 Toyota Yaris with approximately 57,000 miles started making a clunking/banging sound when I would travel over small bumps or brake slowly. I took the car to my mechanic who looked at it and told me that I should take it to the Toyota dealer for repairs. He told me that a bolt holding the passenger lower suspension arm to the frame had corroded and sheared off. He said that if I continued driving it the entire passenger side suspension and wheel would likely break away from the car. He showed me a repair bulletin that Toyota had produced detailing the problem and stated that they should take care of it because it was an obvious manufacturing defect and since failure of that bolt could lead to a catastrophic accident. I took my car to the dealership and they looked up the bulletin and showed me that this problem was only covered as part of the basic 3 year warranty. I would be responsible for paying for the repair myself. When I picked up my car from the dealership they handed me what was left of the bolt they replaced and the other bolt that held the control arm in place. Both bolts were badly corroded and had been replaced with new bolts that the service manager told me were a different part number and were corrosion resistant. Toyota obviously knows that this is a problem because they are using different parts than the cars were shipped with from the factory. The Toyota service manager told me to keep my receipt because he expects this to be a recall issue and told me that I will be reimbursed when it is recalled. Please force Toyota to recall these vehicles before someone loses the front end of their car and their life because of a poorly constructed $5 bolt.

9 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2007 Toyota Yaris

Failure Date: 01/19/2012

I am experiencing a clunking noise coming from the front of the vehicle. The noise is most often heard under acceleration or deceleration. The bolts that secure the control arms to the sub frame are corroding and breaking off, causing separation of the control arm from the sub frame and loss of control of the car.

10 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2007 Toyota Yaris

Failure Date: 06/20/2011

The problem had been developing for about a week. There seemed to be some clunking in the front end. When I would stop, the vehicle would lurch forward a little. My first thought was that something like a break part or tire was loose from the front, passenger side. On Friday is seemed worse after pulling in to a driveway. I had the problem diagnosed at the dealer. They said the head of a bolt on the lower control arm had rusted/corroded/sheered off. Their estimated cost was about $650. The vehicle was out of the manufacture's warranty. My extended 120k mile/ 96 month warranty covers upper and lower control arms, but they refused to cover this repair. Having their refusal explained to me twice, I'm still not sure why. It seems that they make a practice of denying all claims regardless of what they are. (auto exam, houston, TX. ).

11 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2007 Toyota Yaris

Failure Date: 03/01/2011

Klunking noise heard during vehicle operation over roadway bumps or application of brakes. Inspected to find front lower control arm bolt missing from driverside subframe and evidence of corrosion. This bolt is located at the rear of this control arm and passes through the subframe. Bolt head and portion of shank was missing due to corrosion and fatique failure. Lower control arm was loose, posing an unsafe operation condition. Toyota has an existing TSB on this issue but dealer stated that TSB repair timeframe is past due so this repair was paid out of pocket. Subframe removed, portion of bolt extracted, and both lower control arms replaced due to resultant damages. Build up of water and salt in the bolt area looks to excellerate corrosion and lead to bolt failure on either side this car. This issue needs to be re-evaluated for a recall possibility.
